HDV import in iMovie '09? i have to import DV then export HD?

i'm an FCP editor who's having an issue importing in FCP for some reason. i thought as a workaround i could use iMovie to capture and just bring that mov into FCP. I have a Canon HV30. when i capture it imports in DV. Is this how it's supposed to be? There's no way to import in HD? Am i right to understand that i have to import in DV then export in 720p to take advantage of the HD quality of my recorded tape? (if so, kind of ridiculous if you ask me)

The copying is for security reasons, I want to be able to keep email comm on an internal server that can't be accessed through internet.
The error message I get is: "Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator."
It worked some days ago so I don't understand what's different now.

A complete newbie to printing. I prepared layouts in my database (filemaker pro), exported as pdf. They look great when opened in Acrobat Pro, and print nicely. Now I find out most companies want pdf from In Design or a similar program. If I open pdf's in In design, can I then export them like the printing company wants without any loss of quality? This would all be grayscale, but has a numver of images (it's a book from a specialty dog show).. The layouts are just what I want, with tables that were finicky to get right, and data straight from my database. I would HATE to start over! Any help / ideas would be deeply appreciated!
BTW - there is no way to mimic pdf''s from In Design in Acrobat Pro?

Interesting question, there's two elements to it, firstly what you assume 'most companies' want and secondly what can Indesign do to help you.
Firstly, all companies are different and have different workflows and requirements. The simplest thing to do is to send 'the company' your PDFs as you have them now and ask them to make sure they are suitable. If not, or if this won't work for you move on to the second question...
Secondly, yes, Indesign can do that, and I for one frequently use Indesign for just that purpose, refrying PDFs from multiple sources to a more consistent standard. It depends on what you are using the PDFs for as to what export settings you use but Indesign is very good at this, with the exception of the greyscale part you mentioned. Others could offer more detailed advice but you have to use Acrobat Pro to make sure this is working properly and apply fixes as necessary. Personally if greyscale id needed I use the 'TouchUp Object' tool and a plugin called Pitstop but there are other methods too, let us know your specific problems, if any.
One very useful tool when putting PDFs through Indesign like this is Scott Zanelli's MultiPageImporter, highly recommended for placing more than one page, and sometimes even when placing only one page too!

HDV import iMovie vs FinalCut

I have a quick question regarding the HDV import in iMovie. I read on the apple webpage the Final Cut is the only (Apple) video editing software that has native HDV support for editing and that iMovie converts to another apple format.
When using iMovie: what are the effects of the converting:
(1) does the conversion makes the import slower (so do I have to wait after the import for the conversion to happen?
(2) does the conversion have any undesired effect on the quality of the video or is it as good as the original HDV
--> so the basic question is: will I feel or see any difference because of that conversion?
For the equipment that I'm using (/planing to use):
- 20" Intel iMac with 2GB of Memory
- latest iMovie HD 6
- I'm planing to get a Sony HDR-HC7
- I have 100GB free on the internal Harddrive and tons free on external USB2 drives.
thanks for any advise here ... this will help me to figure out if I go ahead to get a HDV camcorder or not (since for now I don't want to spend another 1k for new software since the camcorder is already 1k)

How does the import work than: does it read from the tape in HDV and than converts it or does it slow down the import as needed (don't know if that is possible)?
I guess there is no good answer for this one: but how much longer do you guess it is (I have an Intel iMac ... maybe someone here as experiance with iMac)

I'm well aware that the contents of the video might have an impact on the converstion time and the diskspace (I read somewhere that HDV video compared to DV video needs anything between 2 and 5 times as much diskspace)

You are probably looking in the wrong place - all photos in Photo view and in event too unless you have a corrupted library
most common cause of your not finding them is bad sort - view menu ==> sort events
Nest most common cause is a bad data/time on the camera - this can be corrected using a smart album to find the photos from that camera and then using using the adjust time/date command to fix the bad ones
YOu can alwasy find the event a Photo is in by selecting it and selecting show event

Problems with sound sync for HDV import (MPEG file)

I've imported a one hour tape from my Sony HDR-HC3 (HDV import), and within a few minutes the sound and video get out of sync when I play it. I have elements v4 and also tried version 8 (trial) which was better but still a second out of sync vs 4-5 seconds for v4. The imported files for both versions both play perfectly in Windows Media player with no sync problems.
I'm running on Windows 7 64 bit with 4GB ram and a 4 core AMD processor which isn't struggling. In searching the web I've seen some old workaround solutions for similar problems which involved deinstalling quicktime, installing streamclip and a quicktime alternative and then converting the files imported by Elements. I am hoping there is a more straightforward solution within Elements which avoids having to go through this workaround.
Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Thanks for the pointer Neale. I tried converting the file with Streamclip (quite slow - about 1/3 play speed) and noticed there were some errors reported near the beginning. I reimported the HDV into Premiere Elements 4 but this time in a number of smaller sections. I think it may have been related to those errors because when I cut to a later section the sound was in back in sync where it previously had been out of sync. This seems to have solved it for me. If I get some time to have a play with the converting solution I'll post the results back here, but for now I can catch up with the video editing which has fallen behind a bit.

Trying to import video files. Clock on files and hit import. Imovie says generating thumbnails and importing. Then after loading, no movies there. help?

My 14 year old son is trying to import videos into iMovie. He's done this a dozen times before with no problem. Here is what he's doing "I went to import movies, clicked on the idv files and hit import. On iMovie it said "generating thumbnails, and importing". Then it gave the loading sign. When it was done, none of the movies/videos were in Imovie. He needs to have this done as a xmas gift for a friend by Thursday .

After much research and troubleshooting, GoToMeeting replied with the final answer: We do not support the uploading of recordings to editing software. If you are having issues uploading a recording, unfortunately, we do not have tools or steps to resolve this. It is not a supported feature. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The no longer plan to support editing of recordings made with their software. So, we are planning to find a new meeting provider.

Does iMovie for iOS have support for 60fps video?

I Have an iPhone 6 and love the new 60fps video Capability. But when I merged several into one video using iMovie, it reduced the fps to 30. WHY? Apple, if you're reading this, please update iMovie to support 60fps videos. Why put an awesome product out without backing it up with existing products?

Sorry to say that I, too, am having trouble with my camera and iMovie. I have an Olympus Stylus-9000, and it doesn't pick up when I try to import to iMovie. I checked the list of iMovie-supported cameras online, and not one Olympus model was there. I guess we're just unlucky...

Hello, not certain, but turn the Camera onto Play if it has such a setting, does it show up in iMovie then?

Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.

I'm sorry you are having issues with the iMovie app you purchased for your iPhone5.
The first thing I would suggest is to log out of your iTunes Account on your iPhone, turn the iPhone off and then on again, and see if app finishes downloading/updating.
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Tap on your Apple ID account > Tap Sign Out
If the issues persists, the article below will give you a few more troubleshooting steps:

Try the following steps to resolve your issue, testing the app after each step.
1. Update your device software
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
2. Check for app updates

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

It is also posible to go back to the imovie you had before, it is still on your computer - you go to Finder and it is in a folder in your programs. Many others have gone back to the old program, and perhaps I am also going to do that too.
In the new imovie it does not come up the question "do you want to download these videos ...."
You shall in imovie open your iphotolibrary in top on the left side,( it is standing under libraries) and you can see all the events you have in iphoto, then you can open the event, you shall use and drag the movies and pictures from the events in iphoto to an events in imovie. If you can,t see your libraries, you can click on a show button on top of the left side.
On the picture you see here iphoto is market on the top of the left side and the pictures to the left is my iphoto-events - and there I can open the one I shall use, and find my movies.

HDV imported from After Effect not playing smooth

I work with HDV footage from Sony V1E in FCP. For some reason, i need to do a few things in AE. I then export it there, work it out and rexport it from AE. There I use the HDV 1080/25fps quicktime compression. When I bring it back to FCp, it even shows as no need to be rendered on my TimeLine. But it doesn't play correctly at all. Like if it was to big or... i don't know... I can;t even render it since it appears as not needing it...
What can I do? Help would be very much appreciated...

If it looks good in AE then the aspect will be correct already (tends to get set incorrectly when using capture cards like decklink etc), have you tried forcing FCP to render the AE footage on the timeline (tick full in render all then press Option+R)? The HDV codec is really harsh, it could be the multi converting is introducing the error you are seeing. I tend to export using the animation codec, then re-render everything in FCP, not ideal when you have time constraints.
One last thought, have you checked the AE output setting has field rendering enabled or not, this is independent of the timeline setting.
