HDV looks dark after capture

Hi, recently I came across the following problem:
when I caputure HDV footage (sony Z1) with FCP 6.0 the video looks good in the caputere preview window. But when i start working in FCP it suddenly looks really dark!
What is happening? When I import it in eg Motion it looks the same as in FCP. And when i try the movie player things get a bit weird: http://www.graniet.com/dump/snapniet.mov
Sometimes good and sometimes dark...
Captureing using Apple proress had the same result.
On my television which is connected to my Powermac, the picture looks dark too.
But ! ... but why does the capture-preview-window give such a nice, crispy image?
And how can I get that same image in the rest of my workflow.

Hi Jim,
I was using the lcd screen of the camera. I wasn't in the position to use my crt monitor.
But I compared my manual settings with the automatic camera lighting settings and the difference was only one stop. And I checked the image using the zebra-function. I hoped this would be enough to make a good exposure...
I forgot to mention that the flickering in the qtmovie I posted on the web, the flickering only occures when I actually move the qtmovie across the screen with my mouse. When I first open the movie it looks bright when I reposition the movie somewhere else on my screen it suddenly turns darker.

  • Video looks bad after capturing

    I've got a problem:
I filmed with a JVC GY-DV300E and now I'm capturing the video in FCP 5.1.4. On the camera, the image looks beautiful, sharp, but on my computer, the image looks like the ISO is much too high, grainy and ugly.
My audio/video-settings in FCP are DV PAL 48kHz, I think that's ok.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

I used to have a JVC GY-HD100 and the gain switch was right above the power switch so it was easy to reach down and knock the gain when you were switching it on and off. I accidentally knocked it once without realizing it, shot a scene, and it looked great on the LCD. I captured it and it looked terrible. The reason for this is that the LCD screen is far too small to for you to be able to notice issues like that. You'd need an external monitor to see them. A poor man's external monitor can be made from a Windows laptop running Adobe's DV Rack software. I used this once and it was pretty good.
As for fixing the existing footage, you can purchase / download de-grain plugins (I tend to do this stuff in Shake so someone else is probably better equipped to tell you which FCP plugins are best for this) but don't put too much faith in them. They will reduce the grain but introduce softness to the image. The trick is to find a balance between too much grain and too much blur.

  • Glitch-y footage has more glitches after capture.  HDV.  Of course.

I've been all over here & can't find an answer . . . switched a trashed JVC deck for a JVC Gy-HD100, which I've used succesfully with my spankin' new FCP 5.1.2 update to capture HDV 720p24. There are some digital blips/dropout in the raw footage, which you can see in the LCD screen on the camera, but there is considerably more when I playback in FCP. I used the 720p24 Easy Setup and the clip info looks good. Any idea why I've got more digital crap after capture? It's all kinds, too: lines, warping, pixels, ect, every few secs or so. I even made a dvd of a clip just to check, and it outputs crappy as well. Did I do something wrong? Any advice?
    hdv i hate you so.

My first instinct would be to clean the heads as well.
I don't have much experience with HDV, but I do know dropouts tend to be even more problematic with the GOP (I believe its 15 frame GOP, which would mean half second dropouts). I'm wondering if perhaps whatever compression/decompression FCP uses to playback HDV is just going to make issues like that worse. Just a guess, I could be wrong.

  • DVD burned looks darker than FCP video on ntsc monitor

I use a broadcast ntsc monitor to color correct video from FCP via a cinewave capture/output card. My footage was shot mini-dv. Everything looks great on ntsc monitor. I finished the show, color-corrected rendered and all is good. I export mpeg 2 using the mpeg-2 export option from FCP, playback on computer, looks good. I used dvdsp 4, simulator looks good. I burn dvd and view it on same monitor as I was color correcting on. NOW, the dvd looks darker, the contrast is a little heavier, overal levels are muddier and darker. I try another dvd player, same thing. Different monitor - still dark. I take it home, and try it on 2 other dvd players, and it looks perfect on my tv at home.
I've been doing some research, and I thought this might be one of those IRE setup issues, but from what I've read, it looks like if it were an IRE issue, my video on the dvd would appear washed out and brighter, not darker. Again, it looks great on 2 set top dvd players I've tried, as well as the built in apple dvd player on the powerbook screen. On two other set-top boxes, it appears dark and muddy.
Anybody have any experience with this problem?
    IRE, or something different?
    Thanks

It sounds like it may be DVD Player or television set-up related. If it behaved the same way on each player/tv then it could have been related to encoding settings, gamma etc. - did you double check the set-ups to make sure?

  • Audio and video out of sync after capture from Canon

Help for a newbie please?  I have a Canon XHA1S and have a problem after capturing HD video.  After capturing a 40 minute clip, the  audio and video are out of sync.  Seems like there is about a 3 second difference.  The entire clip is like that in the source window; I made a couple of quick edits and have the same problem in the program window.  Tried exiting and re-opening PP, but that didn't help.  I'm running PP in CS6 on an iMac 3.4 GHz i7 with 8G of ram.  Thanks!

I have NOT used it, but many say to try this for HDV capture http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

I'm looking for a capture device that is compatible with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. I bought elgato but it is not compatible. Anyone know?

This is just a shot in the dark....
Do you have all your devices hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE?  For example -- your camera or digitizer?  When FMLE launches it will try to launch with the last known settings... including input devices.  If it can't find these devices (they're not hooked up and on) it can crash, although in most situations it will simply show a default screen with default settings.
If you do have your equipment hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE, try unplugging them and then launching FMLE so that it opens up in default configuration mode (no input devices selected; all default settings).  Then uncheck the "preview" boxes for both your input and output preview windows.  Close FMLE and then plug in your equipment (and turn it on) and relaunch FMLE.  I offer this suggestion as FMLE can sometimes act funny when the preview windows are open with certain types of input devices.  Don't worry -- you don't have to keep the preview windows off forever.  If you can get FMLE to successfully launch with the preview windows off, then you can set your settings however you like and save the profile.  Then quit and relaunch FMLE and then turn the preview windows back on and see if it works.  If it does, great.  Just be aware that making any settings changes while the preview windows are open could result in FMLE crashing.   Again -- this only happens with some capture devices, such as certain Dazzle capture boxes.
If none of this works, you could always try to upgrade to FMLE 3.2 and see if that solves your problem.

  • Looping audio after capture

I'm capturing into CS3 premiere pro - Cannon Vixia HV30 and HV40 cameras, HDV 1080i30 (i60) project settings.
When playing the video in the timeline after capture, the audio in many spots loops and repeats on itself.  The raw captured video when played via a media player works fine.  Any suggestions on audio settings or a fix for this problem.  Attached is a screen capture of my project settings.
    Thank you!

What do you mean by "What setting are on the media"
My media is mini dv tape with 16 bit audio.
What setting are you using in Final Cut Express 3.5?
Under Easy Setup I have used DV NTSC

  • Ken Burns Effects Look Darker On Preview

Not sure why, but effect previews on deinterlaced movie stills look darker and "better" than after the effect is applied and played back. Why?

Do you notice this mostly on slow moving text? Photographs can get away with more, but lines or text will have more noticeable artifacts. What you're seeing is the ever changing anti-aliasing of the lines or words as they are drawn to match the few lines in a TV picture. You may have seen similar ripply effects on home made credits. There's almost a science to getting the speed just right to avoid the issue.
If possible try a different movement speed. Ideally you want the image to be moving across the screen, or if it's up or down the screen then it would need to move at exactly a multiple of two scan lines per frame to avoid all artifacts. Thicker lines or larger text would reduce the effect too, because it's only at the edges of shapes that the effect would be really noticeable.

  • Video looks darker in iMovie.

I've been working with iMovie for some years already. I have never been able to figure out why the videos look darker in iMovie than they look in the camcorder.
I use a Sony HandycamDCR-PC101-NTSC (DV). The difference between the LCD on the camcorder and what I'm getting while/after the movie is imported is pretty obvious. Then, when the final movie comes out of iDVD looks darker specially in those already dark-low light scenes. Is there anything that I can do. Please. Thanks

    Hi G
    1. The LCD-screen on my Camera can be set brigth <-> dark with buttons
I set it in middle value (setting)
    2. On the menu in my Camera I can set extra bright LCD-screen (for out doors
    and in Sun)
    3. iMovie: Brightnes & Contrast - are very crude. Nearly useless.
If Your movie is of importance - looking into/testing or even buying
FinalCut Express (or Pro) gives very much better tools to adjust the image
    - BUT - To a cost and a rather steap learning curve.
(I use it - mainly when I need to Contrast/Brightness, Color correct and
when the image is in need of slight rotation (can do any angel).

  • Trouble with photos looking different after exporting to LR5

I am new to lightroom 5.  My photos do not look the same after exporting to CD or to a photo lab for printing.  I am exporting to my hard drive before burning to CD.  Can someone help?  I am starting with RAW or CR2 files before editing.

What export settings are you using. For jpegs I always choose color space as sRGB (unless the printer requests Argb) and then I set print  size, with resolution between 240 and 300 ppi. For glossy paper I choose a high sharpening setting.
It’s also possible to print a whole batch to jpeg files using the Print Module (see image below). You can then set an output value for brightening and contrast.
This can be useful as many people using uncalibrated monitors often find prints look darker than shown on their PC. When using for the first time it’s well worthwhile doing a test batch using different settings to see which gives you the best results.

In the worst case, it's still under warranty (all 7th gen nanos are still under one year from purchase).
So, you disconnect it from power, and it almost immediately goes dead?  You can try a Restore... but it doesn't sound like the type of problem a Restore will fix.
You should probably have it looked by Apple Tech Support.  If there's an Apple Store nearby, you can take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To avoid waiting, you can make a reservation at the store's web page

  • Lower 3rd (in Animation Codec mills +) is darker after exporting to QT?

    Hello
My After Effects lower 3rd (Animation Codec mills +) is darker over video after exporting to QT movie? It only looks darker in the areas where the lower 3rds are layered over the video on the final exported QT. But, this doesn't show up in FCP; it looks perfect in the canvas during playback. So I'm not sure what's happening.
Any help would be lovely. Thanks.

Can anyone spot the error in what I'm doing? It's got to be something simple. I've created a time-lapse using these steps (I think) before, so I don't think there's a bug in the program anywhere. Any help appreciated.
Not exactly an error, but I do have a question. If you are sourcing JPEG images to an image sequence file which creates a QT Photo JPEG compression file which is already import/edit compatible with iMovie and currently plays in the QT 7 Player correctly without a "black screen" problem, why are you exporting the data to the AIC compression format instead of simply saving the Photo JPEG sequence file and importing it directly to iMovie?

  • Premiere Freezes After Capture

After capturing footage on an HDV miniDV from my camera the screen pretty much goes white.  It's right after the "Save Captured Clip" box comes up and I name the clip.  It seems to have a problem closing the capture window and loading the new clip into the project box.
Also, after capture and after clicking OK in the "Save Captured Clip" box a window pops up telling me there was a problem with video playback.  But since I was able to hit cancel after the first time it pops up after capturing and continue on to the "Save Captured Clip" box, I figured it wasn't too big of a deal that I not be able to see the footage in the capture screen.
A completely usable clip is successfully saved to my scratch that I can edit.  But I don't want this happening every time I want to capture.
    My Workflow:
    Turn my computer on.
    Connect my camcorder through firewire.
    Turn camcorder to VCR mode.
    Open Premiere.
    Open or start a project.
    Open the capture window.
    Click the record button.
Click the stop button. (a window comes up telling me there was a problem with video playback but it keeps going anyway)
The "Save Captured Clip" box comes up and I name it and click OK (the window telling me there was a problem with video playback comes up again)
    Thanks!

    Try this for HD capture

  • When importing rendered clips from davinci into premiere they look darker and more contrasty.

After importing the graded and rendered clips from davinci into premiere pro cc they look darker and more contrasty. I've checked the exported files from DaVinci and they look totally fine if you play them with any media player, but when I import them in Premiere Pro CC, they appear darker and way more contrasty than I've graded them in Resolve. Anyone have a solution for that?
    Thanks!
    Andrew

This is a long-standing and complicated issue.  To start with, different media players interpret footage differently.  You can hope for the best, but there can be no expectation that footage in one player will look the same in another.  Ridiculous, but true.  The situation is further aggravated by different display cards and different monitors, and no prevailing standards of how color and levels are interpreted.
In your specific case, you need to look at the waveforms, in Resolve and in PPro.  It sounds as if the blacks are being crushed in PPro, which could mean you're monitoring them at 64 in Resolve, but they're being output at 0 or remapped to 0 in PP.   This may also relate to whether you've monitoring with data or video levels in Resolve.
Is there a setting in PPro which covers how values are mapped, as data or video?  I think so, but just can't recall....  Anybody?  Staff?

  • Zero timecode after capture

I'm having issues with sporadic zeroing out of timecode after capture. I have two identical systems running FCP 5.1.2 and capturing with AJA Kona 3 cards running version 3.2. All of the capture presets are identical.
The process that I've been using on both systems have been as follows:
    Creating a new project
Importing an XML into the project
Batch capture from the Kona card as 1080psf 23.98 DVCPro HD
The odd thing is that one system (only one of the two) sporadically zeros out the preset captured timecode for the entire XML, thusly changing a logged clip that was set to start at 13:21:14:05 and forcing it to start at 00:00:00:00. The duration of the clip remains a constant. A usual fix for this is making the captured clips offline, trashing the FCP preferences, restarting FCP and rebatching. That usually fixes it for a few days, but inevitably returns to the same old problem. I've also tried reinstalling FCP, but that hasn’t resolved it. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

So, is there a way to get FCP to display Zero-Based
timecode for an individual clip? Or to get After
Effects to read the timecode embedded with the clip?
    No and no.
