HDV Monitor Out?

How does CS5 handle HD preview on an external monitor?
Say one has the GTX 285 with two jacks...would you use a "y" adapter for two computer monitors and the other jack for HDTV?
Will CS5 know to send the signal out to the HDTV?

I vary my "previews in a few ways.
I have 2x PC monitors running the NLE. (plus I have 2 additional external HD monitors online also)
I preview using the tilde option
I preview to the second monitor
I preview to my externals via f/w and a DV device.  note: This of course is DV but displays as 16:9
There are minor synch issues with displaying to externals this way and they need little workarounds.
I also have a Black Magic Card but rarely use it. Too many issues.

  • HDV monitor playback

I have a BlackMagic Intensity which allows me HDMI monitoring. I can also monitor using firewire downconversion or using the different desktop options. What is needed to use the grayed out options for HDV monitoring?

Matrox MXO is the least expensive output only solution for HD monitoring. Better would be a capture card like an AJA LH or Kona or Io HD.

  • Equium A100-306 Is the monitor out on the side the same as a DVI out?

Hello i was wondering is the monitor out on the side of my laptop the same as a DVI output? I am looking to connect my laptop to my hd tv, what is the best way? Can i use some sort of HDMI cable? Like a DVI to HDMI cable? Or is there a special cable for this?
When i try to use the svhs cable the screen is in black and white. Do i need to change any settings to rectify this?
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks in advance.

Why to HDMI? Why is this HDMI port so important to you? Your notebook has S-Video port and this port is for Video transfer to external device like the TV. The same situation is on my Tecra notebook
You have three possibilities to connect your notebook to the TV:
    - using S-Video cable
    - using chinch adapter http://www.nikomp.com.pl/opisy/AY000/AYVCW12N.jpg
    - or using SCART adaptor http://www.lenexpo-electronics.com/e_italy/i/AdattatoreScartSVHS.jpg
It is important to enable the right port on the TV. Please note that on this way only the picture will be sent to your TV. If you want to send the sound you must use adaptor like http://ecommerce.intermediae.it/images/07628G.jpg and connect sound cable to the TV. Because of that I recommend you to use SCART adaptor and you can connect all cables there (video and audio).
I have tested it with my BRAVIA LCD TV and it works well.

  • Monitor Out - Qosmio X300-12S

I have a Qosmio X300-12S and I want to use my monitor out and use it into my TV.
I don't have an HDMI TV, so can't use that output.
I have bought a Monitor out to Composite/Scart but can't get it to work. I have tried going into the NVidia Control Panel and forcing rigorous detection, but with no luck.
Can anyone give me any clues?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for your replies - my laptop only has a DVI / Monitor Out and a HDMI out.
Not sure what you mean by enabling the right port on my TV. I have plugged the composite cable into the sockets, and I tried a S-Video cable, but had no luck with either of them.
I don't really want to buy a HDTV so that I can watch things (although I'd like one, just don't want to pay for it!!!), but I feel like I'm having less choice as the time ticks on.
    Thanks again...

Any chance for e90 TV or monitor out?

To the best of my knowledge there's no option per se.
You could try a program called Phonescreen. Though I don't know if it will work with the E90. This program allows the screen to be sent via BT to a PC.

  • HDV timeline out to PAL monitor squished flat, please help

This from a 16:9 hdv timeline in final cut, out from a component on a black magic intensity pro to an SD Pal broadcast monitor. how can i stop the image from being squished flat?
    These are the settings:
And this is an anamorphic PAL timeline out via component to same monitor. which is correct.

Looks to me that the problem lies with the settings for the control panel of the intensity. That's likely where you need to dig around I'd think.

  • Newbie FCP HDV monitoring and RAID questions

    Hello forum gods.
First off, I must confess - I am a defector seeking assylum in the the Mac camp. I am a born-and-bred Windows person, and a longtime Avid editor who just made the jump and purchased the Mac-Pro with all the bells and whistles, and FCP Studio. I did this to accompany my JVC ProHD cam and deck.
I have no idea what I am going to do with the time I used to spend scanning for viruses and trojans. I am thinking I may write a novel, or build a house by hand - but that is another topic.
Now that the confession is out of the way - we can move on to the actual questions.
    <big breath>
Ok - so I have this new fancy shiny computer, deck, camera, and monitors - one of which is the Sony 23" that is comparable to the Apple 23. I do not have a Kona or Blackmagic card because I was told that I did not need one right away - though I do plan on getting one later. For monitoring, I was going to use the firewire in/out of the JVC deck and convert the signal via the component outs to another HD monitor. This would bring the total monitors on the system to 3 - a 19" for the edit screen, the 23" for the video playback in FCP and the braodacast HD for monitoring the final signal.
    Is this workable?
Now for the second question - storage and RAID.
Most of my footage will be either SD or HDV. Eventually I'll be going to XDCam, but that's a bit down the road. I have the internal 250 gigger that came in the Mac, and I purchased additional 500gb SATA II drives that I was going to use to set up a RAID. Should I do this internal or external? Will it work? What else do I need? What is the meaning of life?
Thanks for your replies. My credit card is anxiously awaiting your suggestions
    G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Some question back atcha:
    1) When you say you'll be working in SD, what do you
mean? Typically, SD refers to uncompressed 601, 720 X
    486. Or are you referring to DV NTSC?
DV NTSC and/or the myriad formats that the JVC100 can do.
    2) Your Profile says you have a Quad G5, but your
post says it's a MacPro. Which is it?
Sorry - Consider that my first public gaffe in the new Mac world. I bought the Mac Pro. Time to change my profile. I bought it last week - it isn't even here yet. Supposed to be delivered today...
    3) Are you wanting to see your HDV sequence on a
external video monitor while you're editing? If so,
you'll need the Kona card (or the Blackmagic card,
but I don't do BMD, only Aja, so I don't know about
    the Blackmagic offerings.)
I've read about the Cinema Preview function and although I know that this isn't the best idea for monitoring, wouldn't it work? On the JVC deck, it has the firewire output/input and component outs (among others) so in E-to-E mode, couldn't the deck act as my converter for monitoring on the broadcast monitor? If not - I have a line on a Kona-2 with the BOB for about $1400. Deal or no deal?
Now as for your RAID question, you can do either
internal or external. Just don't include the drive
that contains your system folder in the RAID.
I was planning on using the 250 for all my system files and the 2-500 giggers as my edit drives. Sound good?
EDIT: As for the meaning of life, go ask your father.
Gaah... He handed me "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and told me to get to reading....
Thanks for the help. Lord knows I need it.

  • AJA for HDV monitoring?

    Massive Mac...check
    2 apple monitors...check
    FCP S2...check
    Sony HDV cameras...check
    Sony HVR M25U HDV deck...check
    Sony Bravia HDTV...check
    Log and Capture HDV...check
No playback via firewire to the M25U?!?!?
Then, Check the forms and see that I can't do this with HDV?
My question now is will the Kona K3Box help me to see footage on the Bravia?
Will I be able to go out to the tape deck as HDV when I print to video?
Wow, I never thought I would love DVCam. But I am loving it now!

Thanks again for your help. I was not confused with editing until HD-HDV came around. I feel like I am learning all over again.
There are 14,328.3 formats of HD floating around, none of it compatible with the others; this is not the last time you'll be confused.
The Aja products and the Blackmagic products will be keen. I will also jump on the above bandwagen and tell you to get out of the wretched hdv codec upon capture as fast as possible. There is one common denominator that you may want to find in this mess. You mentioned your Bravia and your camera. Do they both have HDMI spigots? If I were you, I'd look for a capturing solution incorporating the HDMI protocol as well as the normal bnc composite/component, sdi, hd-sdi ins and outs.
As of now, I don't believe any of the Kona products utilize HDMI which would mean the purchase of an Aja HD-SDI to HDMI adaptor. Much the same with the Decklink cards but I think the new Blackmagic multibridge product may have all the aforementioned connections.
As with anything, figure out what ya wanna do and what ya wanna do it with and look at your budget and go from there.
I have a Kona LHe that I'm using for monitoring purposes at the moment and I love it. Love it!
    Good luck.

  • Print To Video HDV dropping out

When I try to print to video from the computer to a Sony HDV 1080i deck it goes and conforms all the video then I start the process and it works fine until a certain spot and will go to black then back on again etc.
I've tried this a few times and at the same spot will get the problem so I checked to make sure it wasn't the tape, I threw away the rendered files and re-rendered them again. I even saved the project to a quicktime movie which played back looks fine. I tried to use the quicktime file and it stops at the same place everytime.
    Any suggestions?
I even went and rendered all of my sequences, mixed down the audio etc.
    thanks in advance!
Just recently went from FCP 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 I did another project last week and the print to video worked out fine I was wondering if this was a bug in 5.1.4?
    Using FCP 5.1.4

conforming and decoding the mpeg2 HDV stream seems to be the hardest thing for the computer to do. Enough RAM, and a beefy video card will help. I think it's a miracle every time I can get a batch of HDV clips to sucessfully capture. Cutting doesn't go too bad, but I have found outputting native HDV to be nearly impossible.
We had about 3 hours worth of 10-15 minute segments to output, and it took close to 3 weeks of constant effort, outputting one sequence at a time. It would black out, stop playing back, freeze up, put all kind of breaks in the timecode even if you pre-stripe the tape. And all the while it would never, ever alert or abort on dropped frames, timcode breaks, etc.
One of the big problems was rendered material. I used a page peel transition (I know, I know, it was a video cookbook, gimme a break) in the HDV segments. I took the time to set up each one with an image for the "back" of the page from the context of the segment. Rendered playback from the timeline looked fine, but as soon as I went to tape, the background of each peel would display whatever image I had most recently applied - all of them - but only on output. I wound up having to replace the backgound of each one one at a time, export each transition as a self-contained movie, bring it back in as clips and re-sync it with the surrounding media. Luckily there were only about 150 of them to do. All this I started doing after the first solid week of failed output attempts. Even then, any rendered material in my sequences would trigger the dreaded dropouts, freeze frames, skips, and substituted rendered material. So after another couple days of attempts, I wound up exporting self-contained movies of every minute of my output, re-editing them back into sequences, and so finally I was able to output to tape in 10-minute chunks, and it only took 5 or 10 tries for each one. The only reason I really needed to go to tape in the first place was because I found impossible to transcode the HDV to SD mpeg for DVD without field artifacts, and abysmally unacceptible quality. So I recaptured the HDV as DV using the deck's downconvert, which seemed to be the only thing it could do well.
I believe that a faster computer with more RAM and a better video card would have made a big difference. Newer versions of FCP have probably solved a lot of the issues I had with the rendered material. Even so, there are aspects of the long-GOP, mpeg-2 stream aspects of HDV and the way that it negatively affects timecode, deck control, and capture and output, that make the format my last choice for professional editing.
For your situation, I'd recommend exporting a self-contained movie, maybe even try AIC, although it'll have to reconform back down to HDV for FW HDV output. Try all your various Mac voodoo steps before starting output - trash prefs, repair permissions, power-cycle everything. You can borrow my feathered headdress and tortoise-shell rattle if you want.
Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer for you...

  • Monitor out of range

Brand new Mac Mini out of the box.   Hooking HDMI to a Westinghouse L2610NW.  Showing "out of range".  No way to hook up VGA with what is out of box because there is only a DVI-D adaptor. Tried powering on with no HDMI connected.  Tried connecting another computer to the monitor and that works. No DVI connection on the monitor.  No other monitor available to connect to.  Can you set to 1024x768 out of the box just to get through the set up?

The native resolution for your L2610NW is 1920 x 1200 and the Mac Mini supports that using the HDMI port.
With the monitor connected, reset the PRAM as per > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • Monitor out of range problem

I have a G5 dual 2.3 with a Sony monitor (analog) connected to the DVI port by the converter that came with the Mac. I have a problem in that certain games set the default resolution to a setting that is out of range of the monitor. Specifically, the refresh rate is out of range for it. This same problem occurs with any VGA monitor I use. Is there any way around this? I just bought the Cars game for my kids, for example, and I can't use it (Cars does not have a windowed mode).

as a wild guess, some monitors come with software drivers that allow to get more options for setting parameters.
you can check Sony site for any drivers for your monitor model, and also check what video card you have in G5 and check on card manufacturer site for driver updates for Mac OS.

  • Live Install - Monitor "Out of Range"

Brand new to Solaris, and fairly new to *nix.
Tried installing from the Live CD, and my monitor goes "out of range" when the GUI boots. Likewise, did the text installer, installed "slim_install" and enabled gdm and the same same thing occurred. I am able to boot from the Live CD with the VESA driver, but curious how to troubleshoot and resolve the issue without using VESA.
    Video is Intel i915.
What would be the best avenue to t/s? Is there a config file I can use to specify the default video settings? Or is this a driver issue?

Just adding 1 to the kernel boot line is enough to boot in single user mode.
Try removing kdm from rc.conf and instead edit /etc/inittab where you can change the default run level from 3 to 5
    id:5:initdefault:
and run kdm rather than xdm
    x:5:respawn:/opt/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon
If you get stuck in future, add 3 to the end of your boot line - you'll be in multi-user text mode but with network running so you can download packages, browse the forum with links. I recommend downloading the (text mode) mc file manager which also provides mcedit.

  • VGA monitor out of range error

    Hello all,
I'm putting together a new computer with an oldish VGA only monitor. I used the latest installation disk. Installation went fine. I then did pacman -Syu of course. After that, whenever I boot my computer, it boots the kernel and shortly afterwards (before the login prompt) cause the monitor to go "out of range". I've tested the monitor with a Windows laptop and it seems fine. My question is: why did the VGA mode change during boot? How do I avoid that? If I can get a prompt and install X it'll be one step anyway. Thanks,

    Any ideas?
