HDV on a non-intel PPC imac?

I have an HDV camcorder I've borrowed from someone to film a wedding. I figured since it recorded to miniDV, I'd be fine, since I have FCP5. Also, I've got Toast 9 with BluRay/HD support and iMovie 08. Since my iMac is not Intel, I'm having problems capturing from the camcorder. I've heard of Voltaire (or some name similar to that), but I've heard mixed reviews, plus it costs $40. Are there any workarounds for my current set-up so I wouldn't have to buy any new software? If not, what software would you recommend?

Look in your FCP Help menu bar item. You will find a guide there entitled "HD and Broadcast Formats".
The procedures for capturing, working and editing with HDV are covered in detail.
Interestingly enough, the illustration showing how to connect and set up a HDV camera shows a G5 iMac.

  • Firefox 4 Does Not Run on Non-Intel G5 iMac

I have a G5 iMac/Power PC/NON-Intel. I keep getting alerts to upgrade to Firefox version 4. Clearly, that's impossible because version 4 doesn't run on a non-Intel G5 iMac. Is Firefox going to leave people like me in the lurch, or is there an update in progress for iMacs that can't support Intel-associated software?

There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • Would PSE8 work with non-Intel G5 PPC Macs?

Just received the PSE8 package I ordered at school, and when ready to install on my Power PC (PPC) iMac G5 running under Mac OS 10.5.8, I decided to read the system requirements on the side of the box, and that's when I realized that only "Dual-Core Intel Mac" was listed.
I plan to buy a new iMac in the near future, but for the time being would like to know anything you may have to say about this compatibility problem I am facing. Do you know if PSE8 works with non-Intel Macs?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the answer to my question. I was afraid of that, but had to check to make sure. Will probably rush the purchase of a new iMac at an educational discount or something.
    Thanks again.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

  • Ipod Classic 160 6th g. doesn't sync w/Imac g5 non intel OS 10.4.11. This is a replacement for same ipod which was stolen recently. That pod worked fine with Itunes 9! Now this pod says it only works with Itunes 10.7. ***!!!! Why has Apple screwed up?

My ipod classic 160 6th gen. was recently stolen. It had 3000 tunes on it and it synced perfectly with Itunes 9 on my Imac G5 non intel OS 10.4.11. So I recently bought same model and guess what, it doesn't sync at all. Now message says it only works with Itunes 10.7 and up. I certainly cant afford to buy a new intel based Mac and I really dont need a new pc. It feels like Apple has dropped the ball on its long time users and tough luck to you and all the $$$$$$$ spent on downloading songs and buying ipods over the years! I AM SO ANGRY THAT I CANNOT BRING MY MUSIC WITH ME ANYMORE. I dont know if there is any solution to this except being extorted to upgrade to new tech! I have been trying to get answers to this issue but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a tech genius so extremely techy solutions will be in vane.

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Migration from PPC iMac 10.4.11 to Intel iMac OS 10.6.6 w/ Migration Assist

This migration has been far from straightforward and I wonder if someone can give me some tips to sort the remaining problems I am having out.
1 I can't delete old e-mails. The trash can on 10.6.6 is now compartmentalised into 4 trash cans, each one corresponding to one of my active e-mail accounts. In order to delete an e-mail, I have to use the Move to [Trash] command for each individual message in any of the mailboxes I have set up, other than the default Inbox. The delete command does not work!
2 Some calendars I tried to bring across from iCal in 10.4.11 have disappeared. Where are they or where might they have gone?
3 I cannot open my iPhoto library from the old PPC iMac 10.4.11. An error message tells me that I cannot use this version (9.1.1) to open my photos. This is a disaster.
    Thanks in advance.

I have iPhoto 9.1.1. Is there any reason I should get iPhoto '11? I can't see any reason, at the moment, to buy iLife 11.
You're not reading what I posted. You already have iPhoto '11. version 9.1.1 is iPhoto '11. You shouldn't buy iLife '11 as it came preinstalled on your Mac.
Sorry. I had misunderstood, and not realised that iPhoto '11 IS iPhoto 9.1.1 My apologies.
In Library/Events, I have a series of small windows, each of which bears the title of, corresponds to and holds the photographs of each old Album. These windows are NOT in alphabetical order. It would be helpful if I could get them into this order!
An Event is like a Roll in the old iPhoto. It is a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time. You can name events and split them up, also.
OK. Each Event (in new iPhoto) is thus effectively a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time AND appears to be named identically to each Album on the old iPhoto.
In Library/Photos, there seem to be two views:
1 Each old Album title with a downward pointing arrow next to it displays all the pictures in that album.
That sounds like you are talking about Events. If you have Events selected in the Library, then you are looking at Events, not Albums. You can still create Albums and move photos into the Albums. Do you have your old Albums in the Album list?
See above ie each (new) Event seems to correspond to an (old) Album. I do not have my old Albums in the new Album list (or indeed any Albums at all).
It also sometimes displays the WRONG information for the dates on which the photographs within that album were taken. For example, there are 78 photographs in one album that were taken over the course of a week (by me and other friends) and yet the date next to the album title implies the photographs were taken over the course of 4 years. Why?
If what you are looking at are Events, and not your original Albums, then the Events have extra photos in them since they are based on time of import and not your Albums.
Yes, I take your point about the dates.
Or, the dates on some of the photos may be wrong. If the image file does not contain the exif data for the date, it will try to use something else. My guess would be that some of the photos don't have the correct data in the exif data. If you find the ones that are wrong, you can Adjust the Date and Time from the Photos menu. You can also make Batch Changes to multiple photos. Check the help for that.
Some of the dates on the photos may indeed be wrong. I'll see what I can do about this later.
Library/Faces seems pretty straightforward. With 1,511 unnamed faces, it is going to be quite a job to name them all, but at least it is an optional task.
Library/Places has two pictures in it, although I have absolutely why those 2 specific pictures are there, and not others.
Those are the only two photos that had a geo-location tied to the photo (again, in the exif data). Some newer cameras have GPS location data. If your smartphone has location information (likely) it will embed location info in the photos it takes.
Neither my camera nor smartphone provides GPS location data BUT these photographs were taken by someone else using his smartphone which apparently does. Thanks for solving this mystery.
Recent/Last import shows the same views as Library/Photos above.
Yes, that would be the most recent import for this Library.
Recent/Flagged has no photos in it.
You didn't flag any photos, so none are in there.
Trash has no photos in it.
    I hope that's a good thing.
Yes, that's fine. I haven't deleted any of the imported photos yet.
So I think I just need help with how to get the Albums, whether in Library/Events or Library Photos, or in Recent/Last import into
View menu, Sort command. Note that each selection in the Library has its own sort options.
In Library/Events, I used View/Sort Events 'By Title' and this has alphabetised the Events perfectly. Brilliant. Thanks again.
However, each (new) Event ie group of photos imported at any one time, is still named with, and corresponds to the title of an (old) Album.
I have created a single (new) Album while having a single (new) Event open. This magically transferred all the photographs from that Event to the Album. Problem solved easily.
The latter solution b) would be particularly useful as I find pictures most easily in their correctly named and alphabetised albums and not by date. I have not yet discovered any way to drag the imported old albums into alphabetical order, perhaps because they appear to have been imported as a single, for some intents and purposes but not others, block.
    View>Sort Events>Manually.
PS I have started to read around this subject on the forums...there seems to be a lot of frustration on the general issue of migration of iPhoto from 10.4.11 to 10.6.6...but at least I was lucky enough to have a complete back up of ALL my pictures from the old PPC iMac.
A lot has changed since 10.4 and the version of iPhoto you used. You missed all the incremental changes as they occurred, so you are now trying to make sense of a lot of changes.
    Right.
I think I like the Event structure better than using Albums; however, you can still use Albums like you did before, you'll just need to recreate them if you want to use that method. I'm sure there are reasons for using Albums, but I haven't played with it enough to know when/why.
I see now that Events are indeed almost alternatives to Albums and I will also just have to get used to using one or the other or both. But in any case, this seems solved now, thanks again to your tips.
Printing is a bit different. You might want to play with that a little before you need to print something in a hurry.
    I'll get there.
I am still having some problems with iCal and Mail but will post them again in separate forums so as to be able to mark this iPhoto topic as solved.

  • How do I transfer contents of hard drive on PPC iMac G4 to a new quad-core Intel Core i5

Although my PPC iMac G4 still works OK, I am beginning to realise the time has probably come to get a current model in order to keep up with all the advances that have happened since I bought it about 8 years ago: I will probably get the new quad-core Intel Core i5.
As this will only be my second computer, I am wondering how I can transfer all the stuff on my hard drive onto a new computer and how easy it will be,given the apparently outdated connections on my G4 like USB 1,and possibly other things I don't know about.I am running 10.4.11.
              Any tips gratefully received.

As Allen indicates, Setup Assistant appears automatically, since you do have firewire, the transfer should be speedy, depending on how much data are on the G4.  The firewire on your G4 is FW400, your new Mac has FW800, but you can get an inexensive adaptor that will allow the connection, since the ports are different.
You don't need an external now, but I strongly advise getting one, with a drive as large or larger than your new Mac, you should clone/back up frequently, I use SuperDuper!  which will allow automatic backups.

  • Can video chat with Imac non-intel but not with Powerbooks

    Hi,
I have a Linksys WRT54G firmware v. 1.0.6 connected to a Comcast Cable modem. My IMac Intel Duo (OS 10.4.6) is connected via ethernet cable to the router. I am set to DHCP on router and IMac. My Quicktime settings is at 1.5mb, I have tried with firewall off and on with the appropriate ports open. I have tried upnp on and off.
I can connect to other Imacs (non-intel) but not to powerbook G4's. With the Powerbooks I can text chat, but sometimes they can see my text, but I can't see theirs. And every video chat is a fail to respond with the powerbook, but they can connect with others.
Is there anything else I can do?
    Please help. Thanks.

    Hi cmbell,
Do you know how to access your modem ?
This should give you somewhere to turn off DHCP.
Then you go to System Preferences > Network and select the connection method you are using.
    Then select the TCP/IP tab.
In the drop down that says Using DHCP change it to Manually. (or Manual with DHCP if doing James' way)
Type the IP you wish to use in the next entry field.
Copy the subnet mask form the Using DHCP
    Copy any DNS servers listed.
Copy the router IP address which will be the modem or router in question.
    Hit Apply.
    Done.

  • Transferring from old non intel iMac to new intel iMac

I have a non intel iMac with 10.5.8 and no 800 Firewire. I have just purchased a new iMac with Snow Leopard and of course, no 400 firewire. The wrong adapter (400 to 800) was sent with the machine. The setup instructions said I could use ethernet after installing a "Setup Program" on the old Mac that was included on the new Mac's disk. When I tried to install the program, it wouldn't install as I did not have 10.6 on the old computer.
Please tell me the best way to set up this new computer: using the ethernet cable and migration assistant, or wait and get the correct adapter and use a firewire cable to transfer. I have not set up the new computer; it is just sitting right now.
    Many thanks.

You're probably referring to the section of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231
in the first point under *Starting your migration:*
"Always ensure that the computer you are migrating from is updated with the latest releases of Apple Software. Determine if your computer is up-to-date by going to the Apple menu and selecting Software Update. Apply all the latest updates, including the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update, before you start your migration."
The Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update link is to this: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Migrationand_DVD_and_CD_SharingUpdate
Which also refers to this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3174
As I read that, it seems to indicate that it's only needed on 10.5.5, so it may not apply to your 10.5.8 Mac.
Try using +Setup Assistant+ anyway -- it may work.
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum, for more info and step-by-step instructions.
If you've already set up a user account on the new Mac, you'd have to erase the internal HD and reinstall OSX to use Setup Assistant.
Or, use the similar +Migration Assistant+ per the pink box in the link above. Just note that you can't be logged on to the new Mac with an account that has the same name as any on the old one -- see the last window there.

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

ok thanks, that's what I tought, looks like apple machines are only good for two - three years, the software developers are ahead of the hardware to a certain point, love macs but this is forcing us to buy new macs just to keep  up with development. There was a time it was the opposite.
By the time we get up on new stuff it's time to change again. Gotta be rich to deal with macs ...LOL

  • Convert an iMac G5 PPC to Intel Based iMac early 2006?

I have been working with Macs for some time and I know how annoying their hardware will only work for one series of computers and that's it. I was given an iMac G5 2004 for free and when looking to replace the motherboard I realized that it only uses DDR memory, terrible. I know they have 17" Intel based iMac G4 computers and figured with an iMac there are few parts you need to worry about. I would need to change out the LCD screen or connector and rewire it, I have hard drives that will work, I will need an Intel Core Duo processor (can pick a working one up real cheap), Motherboard will cost me $100, and I assume the DVD/CD drive is universal and will work with the Intel board. Now my concern is the power supply and the LCD inverter. That is pretty much all there is to these machines.
Now why don't I just buy a 2006 iMac? Because where is the challenge in that? Has anyone ever attempted this conversion? Money is not a problem, I enjoy moding and having little projects like this. I have a flat screen eMac with an LED LCD screen, I have a G4 with Mac Mini guts, I have a Gen 1 Apple TV running 10.5... you get the idea. I am tearing the machine apart now I just need to find the proper information, Google has failed me. I assume the 2006 MOBO should be a direct fit because the form factor is almost identical. USB and other slots look to be the same, if not I can bust out the plastic fill and Dremel. Anyone have any thoughts besides that this is a dumb idea?
If I go ahead with this I plan on doing a write-up. In theory, these seems like a very simple conversion just because everything is based around the MOBO and the parts that would need to be replaced I have or are inexpensive. I figure the project would cost me around $300. I run a tech shop and get parts dirt cheap. Any ideas or information would be great as I typically don't work on 2004 models, thanks!
Please no flaming, if you intend to flame just go bother someone else thanks!

You also have to consider to port locations, and if the ventilation is enough for the logicboard.
Furthermore a Mac mini uses a SATA bus that is more geared towards powering 2.5" drives, not 3.5" drives.  Though I've seen some who hacked an eSATA on a Mac Mini on the net.  Don't forget a CoreSolo or CoreDuo Mac Mini won't give you much of an advantage over the G5.  Core2Duo 2.2 Ghz or higher is better unless you still depend on numerous non-Universal applications.

  • Using a PPC backup for an intel based iMac

I used my external hard drive with my PowerBook TM backup to migrate my data to my new intel based iMac. Afterwards I formated the external hard drive to the GUID scheme and initialed a TM backup. But somehow in the midway TM stopped backing up and produced this error message:
    +Starting standard backup+
    +Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb+
+Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD+
+Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Medien+
    +No pre-backup thinning needed: 71.14 GB requested (including padding), 285.93 GB available+
Is it not possible to use a PPC based TM backup to restore it on an intel based machine?

Well, that's not what the error means. There's a problem with the UUIDs of the volumes involved. However, that said, no you cannot put a PPC version of OS X on an Intel Mac. However, you can restore your data from any TM backup. But if you did a full system restore from your PPC system backup to the new machine, then you have a problem for which the only solution is to erase the internal drive and reinstall OS X using the original discs that came with the new computer.
I'm not really sure what you are trying to do, but if you actually formatted the external drive and re-partitioned it using GUID and are now trying to initiate a TM backup of your new Intel Mac, then I recommend you simply reformat the external backup drive Mac OS Extended, Journaled (and check to be sure the drive is partitioned as GUID,) and then reconfigure TM preferences and start a new backup.

  • 10.4.11 issues also, PPC iMac this time

I have a PPC iMac G5 (non-iSight) and have encountered problems similar to (it seems like) a heck of a lot of others on Intel machines. I was running 10.4.10 and tried Software Update to upgrade to 10.4.11. Before too much happened, I got an error saying there the update could not be installed, and from then on Safari stopped working (it would launch but without an active window; when I tried to open a window, it would crash).
So I downloaded the combo update (PPC) and installed that. This time it installed more completely, but finished by saying there was an error. Upon relaunch, the machine would hang at the blue startup screen with the Apple logo, and status bar that went nowhere.
I have an external Firewire with 10.3 on it, and have booted from that. I can't re-install the combo update because the installer says that it can't be installed on this machine.
My issue is similar to others but I haven't found anyone in the discussions with exactly the same config and errors. So that's why I'm posting.
Any help would be rewarded with heaps of good karma.

I have the same problem (s) and using the same setup iMac G5 no iSight. I did not install the combo version after the error message. I went back to software update and noticed that there were no new updates. I checked system profilier and noticed that 10.4.11 was listed. Obviously something is wrong because Safari crashes frequently. Disk Utility will not launch so verified permissions using 10.4 install disk. Everything is dreadfully slow. Startup takes forever, apps open at a snails pace, some aps don't open at all. I switched to iCab browser and it works but Safari doesn't. 10.4.10 was working great on both computers. I installed Leopard on my PBG4 and it's been **** ever since. Now I have a bogus iMac G5 using 10.4.11. I'm not trusting Apple as much as I used to. AppleCare has not been helpful. Things have changed at Apple. Now that they are rich and powerful the care has gone from AppleCare.
Not sure what to do next. Hate to have to go back to the beginning and rebuild but it may be the only way out of this mess. Any ideas appreciated!

  • Intel-based iMacs and Shockwave player

I'm having big problems with Shockwave on new iMac with intel processor. After installing, uninstalling, reinstalling Shockwave, I still get an error message when trying to view a particular, subscription based website that uses shockwave. The message says an Xtra is missing (Shockwave Audio). I cannnot find this Xtra anywhere to install it.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks!

Adobe has slacked off a bit and their Shoockwave player has not been updated to be Universal.
So, if you want to use Shockwave, find the browser you are using (Safari, Firefox, or whaever) in /Applications. Click once on the icon, and select "Get Info" from the "File" menu. In the menu pane, look about 1/2-way down and find a check box marked "Open using Rosetta", and check it. Close your browser, and then open it again.
This will run the browser using Rosetta, meaning that it's pretending to be a PowerPC processor. This has two consequences: first, non-Universal PPC-only plugins will now work in the browser and, second, the browser will run slower and use more memory because it's running in emulation mode.
Another approach might also be to make a copy of you browser application and give it a name like "Safari in PPC Mode", and set the "Open using Rosetta" flag on it. That way, you can use that for your Shockwave site, and use the leaner and meaner version for other sites.
