HDV playback in viewer causes FCE to quit

I don't know what I did, but I managed to get one successful capture without artifacts. When I try to look at them in the viewer, FCE quits. When I view them in Quicktime, it quits. Capture looked great, but playback is full of junk.
I tried everything you kind folks have suggested, but to no avail. I loaded the latest version of Quicktime, I've re-installed FCE. I've tried every concievable connection. I've trashed my prefs. I'm baffled as to why it worked once but subsequent attempts fail. Any other suggestions?

Hi (Bonjour)!
Happy new year!.
As I remember, iMovie 5 can handles HD content, and you cannot see nor capture in iMovie.
iMovie can easily "see" camcorders in general (more than FCE).
So I think your problem is more related to your camcorder settings, firewire cable or hardware configuration. Not software one.
Can you test another firewire cable ?
Please give us items properties for your captured HDV clip in FCE.
Can you open you clip file in Quicktime player and use "command-i" and "command-j" too seek for video an audio properties too ?

  • Capture worked perfectly before, but now causes FCE to quit.

Suddenly now, using the "Capture" command causes FCE to quit completely, without even the message "The application..." appearing.
Up until now, my setup worked fine, and I was able to capture perfectly with this setup:
    OS X 10.3.4
    QuickTime 6.?
    Final Cut Express 2.0.3
Sony DV camera in one FireWire port,
External HD in other port (turned off)
For two years, the above setup worked perfectly and I was able to capture DV from the camera with no trouble.
I recently upgraded the system software and now I am using:
    OS X 10.3.9
    QuickTime 7.1.3
    Final Cut Express 2.0.3
Sony DV camera in one FireWire port,
External HD in other port (turned off)
I also recently added AT&T/Yahoo DSL service, but that is on the Ethernet port so I don't see how that could affect the FireWire port or Final Cut Express. The camera and hard drive have not changed. All that has changed is upgrading to OSX 10.3.9 and upgrading QuickTime to 7.1.3. Now, when I attempt to capture, Final Cut Express simply quits without any messages at all. Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

I think you may have lost the ability to capture because of updating your software. Try what the above link instructs, then report back.

  • Choppy HDV Playback

    Hi,
When editing HDV in FCP 6, I often run into stuttering, choppy HDV playback when there are only a couple of video streams, a few audio streams, and occasionally some still images being layered in the time line, is this normal - especially on a brand new Mac Pro? This is all without rendering anything - but even sometimes after I render it continues to playback choppy.
I am not running any other programs in the background, and when I check istat pro as the HDV plays in FCP, the processors are barely being used. The strangest thing is if I momentarily switch to another program or the dashboard, then come back to FCP, the stuttering issues seem to go away - only to crop up again later.
Is this just how HDV is? I find it hard to believe that simple video playback like this could cause my system to slow down. Any suggestions or advice is welcome.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm up to date on all the software.
My scratch disk is a Western Digital SE16 750 Gb drive. FCP and the project files are on another 320 Gb drive.
Playback was actually on safe, I'll switch it to unlimited and see if that helps.
    Thanks.

  • IWeb widget causes Safari to quit.

I've had my own iWeb site for quite some time now and decided to add a widget to the home page. A simple music player created on Project Playlist. Now whenever I attempt to navigate away from the home page of my site Safari quits unexpectedly. I'm fairly sure that the widget is the cause of this because after removing it Safari behaves as it normally would. Is there anyone else that has this problem and is there a fix?
    Any help/comments is greatly appreciated.

Without seeing a Safari crash report it's difficult to say exactly what's causing Safari to quit.
Try troubleshooting third party add ons >  Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If you haven't done so, run Disk Utillity in case the startup disk needs repairing > Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Keep in mind a Mac running Panther has a much older version of Safari which may have problems accessing certain features on the web.

  • PrintScreen() Function Causes EXE to QUIT

    Hi -
We've been using the PrintScreen() function in a CALC icon to give the participant the ability to print a report that is displayed on the screen.
We've been able to successfully use it on a number of computers, with the challenge being that an 800x600 screen size prints small on an 8.5x11 inch piece of paper.  In most cases, by changing the page settings on the printer, we can get it to fill the page (depending on the printer and available print setting options).
    Here's the challenge:
At one site, clicking on the Print Screen button (which contains the CALC and the PrintScreen() funtion) brings up printer settings and in this case it appears the printer may not be set up correctly....the user changes to select a new default printer...and when returning to the Authorware file they click on the Print Screen button again and it quits the Authorware program.
It's my understanding that the PrintScreen() function will print to the default printer with the default settings.
In cases where we had no printers at all installed, we get an Authorware warning...but can continue fine and the program does not quit. (It just doesn't print which makes sense.)
Apparently, they were running the EXE file over a network, so I suggested they put it directly on the hard drive.  They say that the program still quits even if it is run from the hard drive.
Any suggestions as to what would cause it to quit?
Here are my thoughts so far:
    1.  Could there be any virus protection software that is considering the attempt to 'PrintScreen' as something 'suspicious' and it's closing the file?
    2. Does the default printer get stored in Authorware's memory somehow while it's running, and the process of trying to change the printer causes it to quit?
    3.  Is there a better way to try to provide a printed report from Authorware than the PrintScreen function?
    Thanks -
    Scott

I use this feature to jump to an HTML file that is provided with the course.
When it's time to print, I read in the HTML file with ReadExtFile.
In the HTML I have already embedded some text that is to be replaced at runtime, with some simple tagging, e.g.
Congratulations , you have completed the course with a passing score of %
In Authorware I use replace functions to replace the text with the actual values stored in Authorware, for e.g.
    Html:=Replace("", userName)
Then I write the HTML file to the user's profile folder, and use JumpPrintReturn to print it.
    The erase the HTML file.

  • Lion update causes Safari two "quit unexpectedly"

Most recent Lion update causes Safari two "quit unexpectedly" on 2 of my iMac's and my Macbook.  Has anyone else had the same problem, and/or can anyone help with this?  Firefox is working fine.

  • Viewing Sent Mail Causes Mail to Quit Unexpectedly

I am on an iMac, OS X 10.6.8 using Mail 4.5.  I have two different email accounts that I use.  No problems with sending messages, but I can not view the copy in the Sent folder for either mailbox.  When I try to open a Sent message, Mail crashes with a message 'Mail has quit unexpectedly' and no other information. I really need to access copies of my Sent messages!  This happens with both email accts.

I have this too and it's driving me crazy. Wish some expert could address it, 'cause I'm not finding solutions anywhere.
Bit since you posted about this a long time ago, did you figure a fix? Do you remember what it was?

  • Playback in Viewer (NOT CANVAS!) halts every second or so...

This is annoying. I have been using FCE for a couple of years, and have never seen this to be an issue. I just updated to Universal, and it is broken.
While waiting for a Universal version of FCE, I went back to using the latest iMovie to do some small video projects, knowing that FCE had in the past had no difficulty opening and importing iMovie projects. Well, this seems no longer to be the case. Although the import works flawlessly, there is a serious problem with playback of iMovie captured video in the Viewer window. It pauses ever second or two, with the audio continuing. I have experimented with choosing different video playback qualities, to no avail. The weird thing is that once this stuff is put into the timeline and played back in the canvas, it plays just fine...
I am wondering if this is related to the audio portion of the iMovie video, as it seems that when audio is rendered or is missing in the Canvas, the video plays back just fine.
I am a bit disturbed that this problem seems to have been encountered back in January or February of this year, and yet I purchase the software six months later and the problem is still there. Any solutions to this?

    Hi Tom:
Thanks for your continued help and patience with this. Searching back in the archives, others are reporting the same thing, including the SAME data rate numbers that I am getting, There is something strange going on....
Ok, I just drilled into the iMovie package, found a media file, and opened it in QuickTime. From QuickTime, I see that the format is DV 720x480 (640 x 480) Millions, DV, Stereo 48.000 kHz and 29.97 fps. The Data rate is 57.55 mbits / second.
When I open an iMovie file in FCE, and select the SAME clip, everything is the same, except the data rate is shown to be 6.9 MBYTES per second. I am not sure why this is the value... multiplying it out by 8 bits/byte I don't get what QuickTime reports the data rate as being.
Everything else is the same... Although I am a bit confused as to the sample size of the audio being 32 bit here...

  • FCE HD Quits instead of Exporting

When I attempt to "Print to Video" FCE HD instantly quits. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this?

Ta for that. Helps a lot.
I'm on a naff mobile internet connection at the mo so I'll be brief:
    - 99% likely that getting your camera to recognise FCE will stop it quitting when you go to print to vid (How have you imported footage by the way?)
    - See here for tips on getting your camera recognised:

I think in there there is a link to an Apple support document
-QT7 has given a few people probs. There are various solutions (see above)
-Canon cameras on the same bus as firewire drives isn't usually good. Search here. Usually people have to capture to internal and transfer to external

  • Dropped Frames During Playback in Viewer

    Hi All,
I'm new to Final Cut, and I'm having a problem playing back my footage in the viewer and timeline. I shoot on a Sony HDR-AX2000. I have Final Cut Pro 7. In my Audio/Video Settings, I put my sequence preset to Apple ProRes 1440x1080 24p 48 kHz and my capture preset is HDV-Apple ProRes 422. My footage is stored on Lacie 2TB d2 Quadra, which is hooked up to iMac through a USB 2.0 connection. Every time I try to play my footage, I receive a message saying: RT Extreme has determined these dropped frames were caused by slow disks." What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

    Hi Themightydro,
    Welcome to the forums,
if you look at the right hand side of this pages there is a search tool that allows you to
look for answers to thousands of posts. You'll find out that editing with a drive connected through
USB is a bad choice, ProRes require much more speed than the weaker and intermittent one provided by USB connection. You'd need at the very least a FW (i.e 800) connection or better RAID and eSata for multiple streams.
Try to use a FW connection to start with to see if you get the same problem.

  • Playback in viewer and canvass broken since QT update

I have a Macbook (OS10.5.8) 4 GB RAM, running FCP 7.0.3 that I use to capture video when I'm on a dive trip. I am working with HDV 1080 captured from a Sony DC9 camera.  Everything worked fine until I updated QT to 7.6.9.  Now playback in the canvass and viewer is messed up.  It looks grainy amd and almost like some channels(?) are missing.  I tried trashing preferences but that didn't help.  When I log and capture, the capture window plays normally.  If I put the clips in iMovie, they play normally.  If I put the clips in the QT player itself, they play normally.  View in FCP is sent to RGB.  When will I learn not to update things when everything is working OK.  I can't believe my stupidity!
    Steve

First, download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager  (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/) and delete your fcp preferences.  May help.  If that doesn't work, you could try converting your material to prores using compressor.  Do a short test first to see if it solves the problem.  It will take a while and use up a fair amount of drive space, but prores is a much better format to work with.
Then, once you have a stable, working OS and Application combo, make a bootable clone of your startup drive using something like carboncopycloner.  Once you've done this, you can update OS and Apps with impunity.  If things go south, you can simply clone back to your startup drive and be back at work in an hour or two.  I've got a clone on a second internal drive so I can simply change my startup disk and be back at work in a couple of minutes.

  • Which HDV Camcorders are compatible with FCE HD?

Where can I find a list of HDV Camcorders (preferrably Sony camcorders) whose video files are compatible and be edited by Final Cut Express HD? I have a MacBook Pro with FCE HD and now I am trying to decide on which camcorder to purchase.
Someone told me that tapeless (ie. Hard Disk Drive) camcorders are not compatible with FCE HD. Is this true?
So which camcorders are a) whose video footage could be edited by FCE HD and b) recommended by most?
    Thanks for all your help!!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Currently, iDVD do not support HD on HD-DVD.
Toast does support it in his most recent version BUNDLED with HD DVD burner.
As I know, there are only 3 company who sell HD-DVD burner.
They are very expensive, same thing for HD-DVD blank media.
The "war" between HD Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is not over and the industry (cinema, computers makers, consumers) dont know what technology will win the market.
You can shoot in HDV, convert directly from your camcorder (with sony models, see specifications of your model), and capture in SD in FCE HD. (the result on the DVD is better than shooting in SD and the process is easy)
You can capture HDV footage in ... HDV project with FCE HD set for this format (with the help of Apple intermediate Codec), edit in HDV and print to tape on your camcorder to keep and view the edited HDV content on a HD tv set.
Once the burners will be avalaible at a reasonnable cost, you will recapture your edited movie from your saved tape, and burn the movie in High definition DVD. IMovie HD or FCE HD will do this job well.
Your MacBook does'nt have a HD DVD burner (like any mac sold currently), so think about an external one.

  • Stuttery HDV Playback

    Hello,
I'm editing a 720p60 piece that consists of a continuous, very smooth motion dolly (on tracks) pan. However, on QuickTime playback the video exhibits occasional stutters. These stutters are not consistent temporally (i.e. stutters aren't always in same place). These stutters appear similar to dropped frames (i.e. the video jumps ahead a small amount). However, the system is keeping up as tested by FCP's dropped frames detection, and QuickTime's Playing FPS Info window reports a consistent frame rate.
On playback from tape to an HDTV there are no stutters. Also, tape printed from FCP (this footage which is sttutery in FCP and QT) also exhibits smooth playback on the HDTV. Clearly, this is some software playback issue. Thinking that the complex MPEG-2 data was being misinterpreted by QT, I downconverted to Apple Intermediate Codec, ProRes 4:2:2 and various low data rate SD files always with the same sttutery result. At this point, I am approaching being stumped. This work is intended for QuickTime SD downconverted playback (as well as HD ProRes 4:2:2 archiving) so I cannot avoid the issue. Help ...
    Specs:
    HDV 720p60
    JVC GY-HD200U camera
QT 7.3.1 (and also tried QT 7.4)
    Leopard 10.5.1
    FCP 6.0.2
    Easy Setup 720p60
    iMac 2.4GHz Duo
    chimpybits

    - FCP 6.0.2
    - HDV 720p60
I do think the capture is fine as printing back to tape and playing that onto HDTV is fine.
Studio X I do think you are onto something as the best looking playback I had was with a G5 and a 23" display set as the video playback. However, there were still some stutters. Note that there wasn't a 2nd display so this was an either/or setup (either windows including FCP or video playback). I don't know if this setup creates playback performance issue (~stutters). This same setup I can do with my 24" iMac and the result is similar.
Now, do I really need a Matrox MXO, Kona LHe, or Blackmagic HDLink? I know that they provide the advantage of pixel-by-pixel representation, but I expected an HD LCD via DVI (i.e. 23" Cinema Display hooked up to a Mac Pro or current iMac) to playback the video without stutters.
Also, why would the issue persist through transcodes to countless other QT codecs (some quite low data-rates).
Currently, my next testing steps involve using a 2 monitor setup with one being the video playback and a Mac Pro with an internal SATA RAID. My hard-drive setup is good (I would expect adequate), but not great and my monitor setup needs to be improved. Also, I may be able to test on a Mac Pro with a Kona 3. So, my weak points to be tested are hard-drive, 2nd display, and 2nd display with a Kona 3 card.

  • HDV playback on Final Cut Studio (5.1.2)

Does anybody know how to get an external preview using FCP Studio with a HDV cam (Sony HVR-A1E 1080i)...When I set the easy set-up to the appropriate format, it shows me "video playback: none"...and in the view option I get my camera recognised (HDV 1480/1080) but can t select it (light grey). I even downloaded FCP 5.1 s update (it mentioned fixing critical buggs and device compatibility probs) but nothing changed!
Still I can capture and print to tape, but no ways to get an external preview.....Does anyone have a clue about this hair pulling problem??

  • Keyboard viewer causing lock ups

Keyboard viewer is causing me some headaches. I have a handicapped user who can better use a mouse than a keyboard, and needs to use keyboard viewer. However, after enabling keyboard viewer, if they user logs out of the computer, and logs in again later he gets constant pinwheels. The keyboard viewer does not show up, but if I look at the international menu it gives me the "hide keyboard viewer" option.
If I open up a terminal and run top, I see that every time I click on something, move a window, or interact with anything the kernal_task jumps from 1% cpu to 8% for 15-30 seconds, and beachballs. Then kernal_task will drop back down to normal levels and the system begins responding again until something else is done.
If I go to the international menu and hide the keyboard viewer before logging out, and then log back in, I am able to turn it on and use it just fine. The problem only occurs when keyboard viewer is left showing, and the user logs out. So there is a work around, but sometimes he'll forget to hide it and logs out, causing problems next time he logs in.
This only occurs when using mobile accounts. If set up a local account on the computer, it isn't a problem. If I remove the computer/account from all management and synchronization it still happens. It will occur on any computer the user logs into if they enable keyboard viewer.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for that BDAqua,
I will take a look at that software. I am little reluctant to go third party in that I am a student and can't dictate which Apple mac I am using at my college. They frown on installing third party software. So I am really looking for a solution that is already on the OSX. I tried sticky keys but I can't seem to make it work on the Keyboard Viewer. (I am also surprised that the caps lock does not work normally on Keyboard viewer). I can't believe I am the only one that has only mouse input of text!
So my question remains, will modifier keys be operable with a single click on Keyboard Viewer, and will a macro key be operable /definable for specifically modifier keys in keyboard viewer?
    TIA
