HDV Print-to-Tape problems

About a half hour into a "print to tape" from an HDV sequence to a Sony M25U HDV tape deck, I get an error message that has something to do about a specified file being locked [first issue]. Since I could not determine which file it was having a problem with I decided to render a complete self contained Quicktime and then output that.
When I try to print that to tape it skips [second problem] and it appears to do that with any rendered quicktime. I would think that FCP should have no problems with files that it rendered. This happens with multiple tape decks and FCP workstations.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
Thanks

Cody,
I have a Z7 which should operate pretty much like the FX1. I did this about a month ago and remember struggling with it. Here are my notes, which may or may not help. It is only vague in my mind at the moment, sorry.
1. I am pretty sure when editing I had Render Control set to ProRes, as you do. When I did print to video, I copied my whole sequence, then put it into a new HDV sequence where the render was set to HDV. This took a long time--2:1 on my MacPro Dual 3GHz. I also have starred here--"When copy to HDV sequence, check titles/etc to make sure aspect ration still OK."
2. I have this part starred--"EACH TIME print to HDV tape on Z7U, go into Easy Set-up and choose HDV 1080i60. Defaults to custom which won't work."
3. Here are some more notes I took, which aren't particularly clear to me at the moment
PTV with the "Different settings" box checked and have this be HDV (1440x1080i60). That may have had to do with the fact I was using the MXO and monitoring with a second monitor. May not apply to you. I also see the note "Playback HAD been set to none".
4. Also this last note:
"Camera AV set to HDV, not 'auto' for this. Usually have on auto. Also FW out HDV-->DV is still ON, which is what need for timecode through AJA. Still seems to record into camera as HDV. Instruction book says to turn this 'off' when record HDV to tape, but seems to work either way."
Hope one of these notes helps you. If I had to pick one to try first, it would be #2. I had it starred the most

  • HDV Print to Video Problem

One of my clients is having a problem trying the Print to Video an HDV sequence.
The workflow is to capture their HDV clips as DVCPRO HD via an Aja Kona LHe, edit in DVCPRO HD, then send the project to another facility that has an HDCAM deck for mastering to tape. However, for their first edit, they've created the pilot show, and they want to use it to get more program sponsors. Their only option is to use their Sony HMV-M25U HDV deck and an HD monitor to show the pilot to prospective sponsors.
To do that, they now have to output the pilot show to HDV. They've copied the DVCPRO HD sequence into an HDV timeline and rendered and conformed it. But when they go to Print to Video, they get this error message:
"Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as
RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed
and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV print
    to video."
They have a Quad 3GHz MacPro with 4GB RAM, and the Scratch Disk is a 2-way RAID stripe using two of their four internal SATA drives striped together. The boot volume is on a separate drive.
They are using Mac OS X v10.4.8, QT 7.1.3, and FCP 5.1.4.
I don't have an HDV deck to try to duplicate their situation, so I need your help. If you've done HDV and experienced this error message, what is the solution?
They also have received these error messages:
"The sequence is not compatible w/HDV print to video."
"Incompatible settings. You may have attempted to
output a clip w/compression settings that do not match
the current output settings. Try nesting the clip in
    a sequence w/the correct settings."
Both those messages would seem to indicate their setting are messed up.
They are 1,000 miles from me, so I can't see their FCP and deck settings. They swear that the sequence is an HDV 1080i60 sequence and that the deck is set to record HDV.
    HELP.

OK, I have discovered the problem, and it's a doozy.
Her HDV sequence was set for 1280 X 1080, HDV 1080 Compressor, rather than 1440 X 1080. We have no clue how that happened, but it did.
Here's what I had her do last night when she was creating it: She changed the Easy Setup to HDV 1080i60, then created a new sequence. Then she went to the original DVCPRO HD sequence and did a Command-C to copy, then back to the new HDV 1080i60 sequence and Command-V to paste.
This morning, after I discovered the 1280 problem, I did the exact same steps and the new sequence was 1440 X 1080 HDV. I called her and had her do the exact same thing again, and now that new sequence is 1440 X 1080 HDV.
She is now rendering and conforming. I had her make sure ALL of the render bars were checked in Sequence > Render All, and that she chose Both audio and video. This should do it.
Now, the really tough part. I've got to re-read the thread and choose only two Helpful posts. Why can't we have as many as we need??????

  • HDV: Printing to Tape

I'm trying to print to tape from a HDV sequence and I get this error:
"The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application"
No other applications are open. I have rendered everything. No other clips or sequences are open. I have closed and re-opened FCP. I have trashed Preferences and restarted my computer. It seems everytime I try to Print to Video this error comes up at different percentage's of conforming video.
I have seen on other forums that people have had this error w/ trying to render. But I haven't found this error associated w/ any Printing to Video w/ HDV.
    Any Insight?
    Thanks,
    -B

In my search of this matter, I found this! (I have made this change and I'm trying to print to tape once more. I'll let ya know if it works)
    Error Message:
File Error: The specified file is open and in use by this or another application. (Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Final Cut Pro)
    Translation:
If you are using Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Final Cut Pro, this error message may pop up from time to time. Mac OS X has a feature called Spotlight that runs in the background, indexing the files on your system to improve file searches at a later time. This error message can occur if Spotlight is indexing a folder that contains files Final Cut Pro is rendering. When Final Cut Pro renders files, it caches (the process of temporarily storing data, often in a computer’s CPU, in a location other than the hard drive so you can access it much faster) data, which can cause the error message if Spotlight is indexing in the same location.
    Solution:
According to Apple, simply clicking OK solves the problem, but you can configure Spotlight so the error message doesn’t recur. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences. From the View menu, choose Spotlight and click the Privacy tab. Next, use the finder to open your Final Cut Pro Documents folder and drag the Render Files folder into Spotlight’s Prevent Spotlight From Searching These Locations area.

  • HDV print to tape? Help.

I can't seem to get my HDV sequence to print to tape. I am new to the whole HDV thing so bear with me. I am using a sony HVR-V1U.
    Sequence Settings:
    Frame size: 1440x1080
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 x 1080
Editing Time Base: 29.97 (can't Change)
    QT video Settings
    Compressor: HDV 1080p24
When I go to print to video it says: This sequence is not compatible with print to video.
    Thank you.

Well, all I can think of is, are you trying to print a whole sequence from your time line? If so, make sure the timeline window is activated, but nothing in the time line should be selected.
If you are trying to print just a portion of the time line, you can mark in and out points on the time line itself. Either way, the time line window should be the active one.
You shouldn't have to hit record on the camera; check the 'Start Recording Automatically' box in the Print to Video window.
Also, with the V1U in VCR mode, go in to the REC menu and see if the DV/HDV record in setting is set to AUTO. If it is, set it to HDV only.
Back in the Print to Video window, what happens for me is, I set everything up, and click OK. Then, the render/conform progress bar comes up for a minute; at the end of that, my Mac's screen goes black, and a dialog comes up saying everything is ready to go, and I should click OK to allow the Mac to start playing, and the camera to start recording. When I do that, the green dot and pause bars come up on the camera, which goes into standby mode; a couple of seconds later, the red record dot comes up, and it begins to record.
I don't know if I mentioned this before, but all other firewire cables should be disconnected from your Mac when you're doing this.
It sounds like you have the connection established, if you can see the color bars and slate on the camera LCD; maybe there is an issue with what you have selected in the timeline to play back.

  • Print to Tape problems

Keep getting the prompt "Check HDV/DV Input" when attempting to Print to Tape. My AV Devices are set to HDV(1440x1080)30p. I'm using the Canon XLH1 as a deck. Have changed firewires and rebooted. The item property of the sequence I'm trying to print is HDV 1080p30. The camera is on Mode Set HD and Frame Rate at F1, which is 30F.

I get the desktop image when I play and record to the deck.<<</div>
What are you playing? If you simply play the timeline in FCP you should get what's in your timeline recorded to your deck, not the desktop.
Any way, glad the other option worked.

  • Minimum Mac G5 for HDV print to tape

    Hi all,
I've been trying to print to tape my first HDV timeline. The error message reads, "Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV Print to Video".
So my questions are, is there any way to turn off RT Extreme? Is my iMac G5 2.0 ghz, 512mb ram insufficient for this operation? Perhaps boosting the ram could eleviate this issue? Does anyone know the minimum Mac requirement for outputting from FCP5.
On a side note, I was able to export the clip, the reimport it into iMovie HD, but I am having an issue with a black bar on the left of the screen in iMovie which I have also posted on that board looking for answers....

Try turning on Safe in the RT settings in the top left corner of the Timeline Window.
    And render everything.

  • I also have print to tape problems

When I try to print footage to tape, It only captures the audio.
I"m capturing onto my Sony HDR cam, on the DV setting.
I did suspect it might be that final cut pro is set for NSCT, and the camera is set for PAL ( want to print to PAL)
So I did change all the settings on Final cut to PAL, but still nothing.
I know I'm missing something, but I can't put my finger on it
    Mac Pro

    Hi Shane
I have upgraded my old system to the newest (new Mac Pro + lastest fcp)
As the fcp programe came from the USA, and I'm in Ireland, all the default settings was on NSTC.
So I went and changed them all to PAL.
Then when I tried to print to tape, and the problem occurred, I went back to the settings, and found that I Left 1 setting on NSTC. I then chaned it - that's why I thought it may be the source of my headache.
The footage was filmed in PAL, and I checked, captured in PAL aswell.
Even when I do a playback, with my camera (Sony HDR-FX1E) connected via firewire, it will only show the first frame of the sequence, and every frame I stop on..... audio plays 100% fine.

  • Print to tape problems-Get the audio but no video

I'm going from a QT file I brought into FCS and rendered, et al to tape. I'm able to get the audio track output but no video!
The QT original of my film was 720x486 NTSC 4:3 H.264 and is a .mov file format. Bringing this into FCS, FCS asks whether I want to automatically convert the thing to fit the specs offered in tape output - which, when I actually look in the dropdown for output settings, don't have a 720x486 but does have the usual 720 x 480. FCS chooses the 720 x 480. Ok, so fine. It converts the clip to 720 x 480 and playing back the rendered clip t 720 x 480 looks fine and saves to a QT file fine but when trying to get onto DV tape, the video won't print. I do know it's possible to get a print to tape of my film since a week or so ago, someone made a digibeta output of my film for me using FCS and it came out just fine (I didn't pay attention to what they were doing exactly and perhaps they did some magic that someone else here might be able to fill me in on...).
Anyway, I'm stuck - canNOT get the video track to output to tape. Any clues appreciated. I've been through the output setting module a million times, tried creating a new QT file original to work from, and have confirmed that the recorder works fine because other QT files we created worked fine - though they were 720x480. But shouldn't the conversion FCS does from 720x486 to 720x480 suffice????
    Help!

H.264 isn't supported as an editing format in FCP... convert the files to a supported format. If it seems to be OK in playback in the Canvas, I'd suggest you export it as a QuickTime Conversion movie and choose DV as the format... reimport that and print to a DV deck/camera.
H.264 is a delivery format, not an editing format... resizing it probably hurt the picture too BTW... If it's really critical, then you should do the above to the source clips and re-edit, but choose ProRes as the codec, and keep it 720X486... no resize that way. Re edit in a ProRes sequence matching the frame rate and size. FCP will set it up for you when you drag to it just as it did before, but it will not resize in that case.

  • Final cut pro print to tape problem

So i needed to print this news package on a tape, when i go to do it, all seems well until i play it back. all i see is black screen. We use firewire to a jvc mini dv tapedeck and mac book pro with fcp 7.03. Need help greatly.

Make sure your camera is getting a signal...
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Timecode problems when Printing to tape HDV sequence

I have a project fully edited in HDV format and I want to make a master on tape to archive. I have done this before with no problems but now I have an odd issue. After FCP has printed to tape and I review the footage on the deck (camera is the recording device). The picture is on tape and looks fine but the timecode is not function properly. Instead of running continuously it freezes and then will skip forward some. Again the picture is there and looks fine. I have switched out the decks and the tapes and tried it 5 times but with the same results. What makes this more odd is the first hour of footage runs properly and then after that the problem starts.
I played back other projects like this that I did the same way and the timecode runs correctly. This is a very odd issue and hoping someone else has seen this before and can help. Thanks!

Try exporting the sequence as a self contained movie, then try recording that. My guts say the HDV you're working with is just not allowing your CPU to keep up with it all, and TC might be where this is showing up. But a single file playing back would make things easier on your system all round, and it's lossless. File/Export/QT movie... then check on make self contained, and leave off recompress all frames. This is lossless quality wise.
Sure it's not just dirty heads or something on your recording devices? LIkely not, but it's a shot in the dark from here.

  • Print to tape HDV problems

I' m trying to print to tape an HDV sequence... Im printing to a Canon XHA1 camcorder but no luck...FCP see the camcorder fine but while trying to print I get a "check connection" on the camcorder monitor..any clues to what I'm doing wrong??..Thanks

Check the print to tape dialogue box and make sure you are not adding any tail leader. For some reason, this makes hdv choke-- probably because it would have to condform on the fly.
    I really dislike hdv!

  • Problems Printing Nested HDV sequences to Tape

I have edited a program with each segment in its own sequence. I now want to assemble all of my sequences together into a main sequence and print my finished program back to tape.
I am working with HDV 1080i60 from a Sony HDR-FX1. After I get everything put together in my master sequence I choose "File > Print To Video" and FCP begins "Conforming HDV"
When the conforming finishes, it starts over for a second run... Is this normal?
Also when the second "Conforming HDV" finishes and I start printing to tape, parts of the video will jump back a few frames a little ways into a clip, play smoothly, then jump forward a few frames towards the end of the clip. This happens on sections that have speed changes applied to the clips in the original sequence.
If I print to tape from the original sequences this does not happen....
Does anybody know why the video is jumping back and forth when I nest? Is the double conforming normal? Thanks!
    PowerMac G5 2.7GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The double conforming might be normal... depends on if you've rendered every effect... full RT or not. If not fully rendered, you get to render (first conform), then conform the edits which now reference render files...
I'd not nest the separate sequences - might pick up some time. Just copy and paste the clips between the sequences and the master.
I"ve an article about to be published about aquiring in HDV, but not really editing in the format... you'll save a LOT of time if you work in DVCPROHD instead of HDV.
Here's a link to the free magazine that will contain the article... it goes to the printers tomorrow I think.

  • URGENT! Problem printing to tape

I have a Sony HDV-A1U video camera. I edited a video in FCP and I want to print the footage back to a tape. My camera is not being recognized by the computer. All my camera shows is a blue screen. My sequence is setup for HDV and my easy setup is configured for HDV. Any ideas?

You'll know some of this already but it's a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
Don't use iMovie for capturing (or printing to tape) - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
If none of the above works, then I suggest you trash our preferences. FCP gets it’s knickers in a twist from time to time and if you trash your preferences it will often sort things out (with no harm done to your project etc etc) . . .
    Download FCP Rescue :
    http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
Once it’s downloaded, hit Backup first, then hit Trash. If the Trash does no good, hit Restore and everything's as it was. (Easy-Peasy)
FCP Rescue is freeware but there’s provision to make a donation if you wish – (it’s well worth it)
If you need reassurance about trashing your prefs, go to this Apple page:

  • Problems with capturing and printing-to-tape using FCP4

Having trouble logging footage and printing to video using FCP4.
    1) When we log-in footage (capture) it constantly stops and says, "dropped frames". This usually happens after 10-15 minutes of logging-in footage. Why is this happening??
    2) When we Print-To-Tape, it will suddenly stop! Sometimes it will continue Printing-To-Tape, but without audio!
Is this a common problem? Should we re-install FCP4?
We've done all the software updates, but we're still experiencing these problems. We've also cleared up our computer by deleting old FCP4 projects.
We have a G4 with three internal Hard Drives with approx 180GB each. We're using the Sony DSR-11 as our Mini-DV deck.
    Help!!!!

We don't have Virex or Norton software in the machine. We have Disk Warrior which was helpful in the past with other problems. Should I run another check using Disk Warrior?
We only have one machine which has three internal drives. We've experienced the same problems using each of the drives.
We do have some video stored in the system drive, but normally we don't use that drive. The system drive currently has 70GB availble, as do each of the other internal drives.
We have updated our FCP to 4.5, but should we trying re-installing it?

    DP 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Visit colorsstudios.com

Honestly, a great looking image can only br achieved by outputting certain areas, then going back in to FCP and making changes. I'm sure a decent output will be achieved with a straight print to tape (that's what one would start with anyway). If you tweak it now based on what other people have found you're playing with fire. Just print it and go from there. If you have time to make changes and reconfrom and reprint, that's great, but if you start fiddling, you may get a complete failure, for which you don't have time.
As for the 95% conformed, don't trust it completely - until it is finished conforming.
