HDV problems

Hi all,
I've done this before, but suddenly it won't work....
Am trying to capture footage from my PAL Sony HDV-A1E (using the HDV/DV firewire output) into FCP 5.1.4 using the following settings:
However, after selecting 'File' then 'Log & Capture...' the word 'File' remains blue (selected) and the capture window says "CUEING TAPE" and nothing is captured.
The tape moves, and seems to be being controlled by FCP.
As I say, I'm sure I've done it this way before...
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks.

Thanks Tom,
I tried that and every other setting and finally realised... I had the camera output set to convert HDV to DV.
Doh!

  • The cliche HDV problem on FCP 5.1.4 with sony HC7

having the pain in the butt problem i have been seeing everyone run into lately. MacBook Pro runnin FCP 5.1.4 & the Sony HDR-HC7 & i cannot get a Sequence, Capture & Device Control preset that wil consistantly work. The HDV-1080i50 Easy Setup Preset and a few little adjustmentsto the Preset worked for me till i upgraded from 5.1.2 After just getting the camera & the MacBook and having it worka amazingly & now i can't get nothing sure is depressing, i have tried man different ideas i have read over a handful of forums; but still no solution. Thanks.

I am currently running the same exact setup. The key was to make sure the camera was in play/edit, "iLink" showing HDV or DV appropriately, Firewire drive connected (scratch disk), and then starting the computer and finally booting FCP. I couldn't get it to consistently recognize the camera (device control) without this process. It works for me every time.
    Thanks!

I have a new Macbook Pro 2,4Ghz with 4GB RAM and Leopard 10.5.4
So also I have Final Cut Studio 1 updated on 5.1.4.
My problem: As i captured HDV Material i saw in Quicktime, that there are many fragments, more terrible then hdv compression. In Final Cut 5 the same. So i was looking for an other Mac, so i've found an G5 also with Final Cut 5.1.4 and Tiger OS. But there i saw nothing, no fragments, all good(same material).
So i think its a problem with between macbook pro, leopard, hdv and final cut 5.1.4
Can anyone help me, im also able to give you a screenshot with the fragmets. There are very strong to see in the grey colors.

  • Premiere CS3- HDV problems¡¡ Help¡¡¡

    Hi
I have been working in a movie since 2009, in Premiere Pro CS3. Project settings: HDV 1080i. I have been having a lot of problems with the render process, new timelines, and saving the project. Sometimes when i make renders, save the project, close and open again, It doesnt save the render, so I have to start from the begginning. But that´s not the big problem. 2 weeks ago, I capture 4 hours of hd video and aded to the project. Since then, all my other sequences have dissapear. I only have the main sequence with the movie, and the rest of the sequences are still ther, but only as video clips, not as sequences. So, I´m just working in one sequence, one timeline. The size of this only sequence is about 7 hours in full hd. Since then, Premiere have been crashing every 5 or 6 minutes. Sometimes when I´m working and I want to save, it pops up a message and say that it cant save the project becouse of an unknown problem, so I try to save it in a different location, but it doesnt work, so simply, I cant save my project.
This is the machine Im working on:
PC Microsoft xp Profesional, Version 2002, AMD ATHLON 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+, 2.61GHz, 3 gigs RAM..
Hard disk memory: I have like 130 gygabites available. The size of the project with all the captured videos, autosaves etc is about 200 gygabites.
I really cant understand the problem, I have uninstall and install two times Adobe Premiere cs3 and every time I have the same problems. Somebody tell me that Premiere only works fine with less than 4 hours of video in the timeline so, is this my problem? Is it the computer? I really cant undersatand.
    I really need some help.

  • Capturing from JVC 100 in HDV problem

I can capture from this camera in SD - no problem.
I set it up for HDV and in Log and Capture have full control of the playback etc but no video in the window. It says VTR OK.
Pressing capture now gives message: no data from device, capture was aborted due to lack of incoming data. Check connections and that the deck is playing.
I am using the same firewire connection as for the successful SD.
I am still running on 5.04 as I did not realise that the upgrade time was limitted. I hope this is not the problem as I do not want to buy the big upgrade soon to be on offer. However I will shortly be getting a Framestore, the JVC DR HD100 and also hope that the upgrade will not be necessary for that.
Or is there a way to get up to 5.1?
Since writing this message I have returned to SD and am now having similar trouble but it did work before.
    Thanks
    Pete Snowdon

Wait for FSC2 next month to upgrade. If you have had sucess using this camera before then see what has changed since. Have you updated anything like OSX or Quicktime? If you have some and not all updates this may be your problem. Also try resetting the camera to HDV with the firewire disconnected and setup a new project in HDV. Make a new capture scratch folder to an internal drive, and make suree you don't have any other firewire devices pluged in before resetting the computer.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Capturing HDV problem

I'm trying to capture 720p30 HDV into FCP. Logging works fine, but when I try to batch, or just capture clips "now", I get this error message: CAPTURE WAS STOPPED DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH THE INCOMING STREAM. THIS MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE TAPE.
It creates a clip up to the point it cuts out. Any suggestions?

For HDV firewire should be fine. Are you sure you are
using the correct capture preset? Try choosing the
Easy Setup for HDV 720p30 and then creating a new
    project.
    rh
I'm using the correct capture preset. I tried making an HDV copy of the tape and logging the copy, but still got the same error message: "Capture stopped because of a problem with the incoming stream." I changed the firewire connection from the back of the monitor to the back of the computer....that seemed to help on some clips, but didn't solve the problem. I wonder if the external drive just can't handle the data rate from the HDV deck? The only way I can capture is using the "now" button, and it usually stops after 10 seconds.

  • Sony Z1 Print to video HDV problems

I researched several post on this topic and still can't get this to work. Here's my situation. I have imported and edited my HDV footage in the HDV easy set up in FCP 5. I now want to record this HDV sequence (in HDV format) back to a Sony Master tape using my Z1. I am working in a PAL environment and have dbl checked all my settings on the camera and within FCP and I still can't get the video to output. I just get a blue screen on my camera monitor. Can the Sony Z1 even record back to tape in HDV format? When I have the IN/OUT Rec setting set to HDV, REC MODE is greyed out. Only when I have this set to DV or Auto is the REC MODE open to changes. I have my camera set to VCR and the settings are these on the camera:
IN/OUT Rec: VCR HDV/DV is set to HDV (Thats what I want to record in, yes?)
    REC MODE: Greyed out
    Component is 1080i (Pal)
    iLink is set to off
A/V to D/V Out is off
Final Cut Pro settings: (Audio Video Settings)
Summary Tab: Sequence Preset is: HDV-1080i50
    Capture Preset is HDV
    Device Control: Sony Firewire
    AV Device Tab:
    Playback Output Video: NONE
    Audio: Default
"Different Output for Edit to tape/print to video" Certain settings are greyed out. On this it depends on what my camera is set to in the IN/OUT Rec setting.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Been trying to get this to work for days.

  • Premiere Pro 2.0 HDV problem

I have installed the free version announced for Pr PRO 2.0, using the license number given.
Works well for DV clips, but for HDV clips they can't be viewed.
Is there a limit on this free version, as it is for the new one's (like CS5 for exemple) where HDV video was
not available (only DV) for editing ?
Fortunately, my Premiere Elements 9 and 11 licensed versions accept these 2 formats, so I can work. This almost 8 years
old version of CS2 could be given complete on this free offer !

  • Print to tape HDV problems

I' m trying to print to tape an HDV sequence... Im printing to a Canon XHA1 camcorder but no luck...FCP see the camcorder fine but while trying to print I get a "check connection" on the camcorder monitor..any clues to what I'm doing wrong??..Thanks

Check the print to tape dialogue box and make sure you are not adding any tail leader. For some reason, this makes hdv choke-- probably because it would have to condform on the fly.
    I really dislike hdv!

  • HDV Nightmare!!!

I recently filmed my first event (a wedding) in HDV with a pair of Sony Z1U cameras. I wanted to downconvert the video on capture, but ended up capturing native HDV. I am running a Power Mac G5, 2.3 gig dual processor, 2.5 gigs RAM, FCP 5.0.4, several external firedrives from LaCie, Other World Computing and an internal separate media drive. Anyhow here is what I encountered.
    (1) When I captured the HDV footage (via log and capture method), FCP referenced everytime I hit the start/stop button on my camera and made a new clip automatically in the browser bin even though I didn't have my inpoints and outpoints set like that. I now have about 300 or so clips that need to be renamed between the two cameras. I checked out Apple's website and apparently from reading the posts, this is normal with FCP version 5.0.4. Apparently, this "bug" was fixed in a later update.
    (2) I tried capturing the same tapes again, but this time as downconverted DV footage. I set my camera's VCR for HDV to DV capture, Ilink conversion on and my FCP preferences for DV NTSC anamorphic capture and sequence. I see the camera has a submenu for downconvert giving the option of squeeze, letterbox and crop edges. I want my footage downconverted as DV anamorphic, none of these three options.
FCP gave me some warnings that it was unable to locate capture device, audio might be used by another application and my VCR gave me a warning to change my VCR settings. I tried every imaginable setting between FCP and the ZIu and unplugged and replugged my firewire cable when changing settings.
Is anyone familiar with the Z1U? If so, what should my settings be for the camera and FCP?
    I don't want 4x3 DV,; I want 16x9 DV.
    (3) I don't want to edit in HDV after seeing the outrageous render times for a 20 minute multiclip sequence (the computer said three hours) b/c it had the orange needs render bar on top of the video. The same sequence as DV (with a green status bar on top) would take me on average 7 minutes or less. I'm delivering in SD for now, so I'd perfer not to mess with HDV.
    (4) If later I want for some reason to output an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray when the technology allows (in the future of course) if I capture in DV will my FCP reference project allow me to just recapture my tapes without having to re edit if I want the same DV footage but then as HDV or HD?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi Andy,
I selected squeeze, but still cannot downconvert the video on capture. The preview window says okay and when I play the tape, no picture comes up, only the preview disabled window. I have gone back and forth in my audio/video settings in FCP 5.0.4. I've tried DV NTSC, DV NTSC anamorphic, etc. I have checked my sequence settings too. I just don't understand why I can't downconvert.
My computer is now busy trying to "confrom HDV" of a 20 minute multiclip edit which I haven't even edited only synced up on the timeline. I was given the three hour approximate render time...it's just crazy. The orange render bar is above my video...normally in DV, I get the green bar, which I can work in realtime and it takes a few minutes to render. At this rate it will take me all week day and night to finish this project!
There must be a solution to this HDV problems I'm having!

  • Any Way Of Removing Bad Panning Judder When Burning HDV to DVD ?

I have tested this many times and haven't found a cure using iDVD.
When I make a DVD from HDV footage I get very bad judder on vertical lines (lamp-posts, window frames etc.) whenever the camera pans, even extremely slowly.
I also get judder from people walking slowly across the frame.
This happens whenever I Export>QT Movie in FCP and burn in iDVD (using any of the 3 quality settings).
The only cure I have found is to Export>Using Compressor and then burn the DVD in either DVDSP or Toast.
Unfortunately the MPEG2 files can't be used in iDVD.
For various reasons I would, if possible, prefer to use iDVD.
Has anyone come across this HDV problem and found a way of eradicating it in iDVD ?
It would appear that the QT Movie is the weak link causing the problem.

The problem only occurs in iDVD (and Toast) when the encoding is to DV-PAL, HDV
Keep in mind I don't work with PAL at all nor do I own an HD camcorder yet.
But I've seen this same situation before on this forum when working with PAL only.....
I'm wondering if JES deinterlacer will help here or not?

@F Shippey ..... any thoughts here Fred?

  • RT - could someone explain why this happens

    Hi,
If I'm editing hdv and it begins to stutter during playback. Why when I change the RT setting from safe to unlimited and back to safe again, does the timeline now play without the stutter?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hey Max,
Thanks again. And sorry to continue a conversation that was solved, but...
With ProRes being a much higher bit rate than HDV I would've expected it to be even worse. Are you transcoding to some other format to edit HDV?
If that is making the problem go away, then that's cool, but would that mean that the HDV problem is in the processing power?
The strange thing is that when my system starts to stutter and not be able to cope - even with things like Motion, but also with HDV in the timline - my CPU is only sitting at around 60%, there's lots of free RAM, but still the timeline stutters with one track of HDV often.
Anyway, if I'm boring you don't worry, but this is the main issue I'm having on my system and I'd love to understand it better.
Could it be that the RAM in the graphics card is maxed out, or some cache in the graphics card - and if so, how can you empty that?
    Just some thoughts.
    Cool,
    Matt

  • Problem Capturing from Sony HVR-A1U to FCP 5 using HDV preset

    Hi,
i just got a Sony HVR-A1U and am new to HDV. I am a professional editor so i have a full understanding of FCP. Here are my problems and questions.
Specs of system : Power Mac Dual 2Ghz G5, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200 64mb (Do i need a better GFX card?)
    1) When i setup the project settings at the start I selected HDV 1080i/60, it automatically states "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware card." I am quite sure that i have all the codecs i could have without having a hardware card, since i don't have a hardware card. Does this mean that i need a blackmagic HD card or a Kona card just to process the HD into FCP as HDV 1060i/60 even though it is through firewire?
    2) I advanced to the Log & Capture mode with the HDV settings, set properly across the board. I can not see picture, can hear audio and can log clips. When i capture it captures black for video but captures the audio just fine. I figure this is because of the missing codec which encodes HDV for FCP from Sony's HDV encoding?
    3) I can capture on the fly with the Apple Intermediate Codec, no Log and Capture screen comes up, just a dialogue box that asks me to name the clip. I understand what this codec is and find that i am stuck at the moment using this until I find a way to capture the other way. Is there anyway to have the Log and Capture screen launch using this codec?
    4) I can not have pre-logged clips using other methods and then batch capture them using the Apple Intermediate Codec, it just reverts to capturing on the fly. Anyway to Batch Capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec?
Funny thing is that i can digitize fine in iMovie HD although i don't know what codec it is using. This totally baffles me that it works in a certain manner, i can get the job done, but not the way i should be able to. I've been using FCP since '99 and have never encountered something in this manner. And since this is my first experience with FCP and HDV i have nowhere to go from here except get some help or settle for what i can do and change my normal post-production workflow.
A question i really want to know about is whether i need an extra hardware compnent, i know i asked that question above, and i could understand if i did. (i.e GFX card or Capture card - even though i am going through firewire)?
I appreciate any help, i might not respond over the next couple of weeks because i am shooting in Europe and will be back stateside at the start of February, so i will not be active on this post until then. Any input would be great and when i get back i will have loads of footage that i will need to digitize, so i will be very open to help with troubleshooting as well.
    Thanks again!!!
    Gabe
    PowerMac G5 DP 2Ghz, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200, 20" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4)

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.
Are you guys actually reading my post??? I have given all the information that i can, settings are proper, so the post so far are completely redundant.

  • HDV Capture Problems in FCP 5.1.1

We are using a Sony M10U HDV deck to capture footage in Final Cut Pro. Recently, on all 3 of our systems, the tapes seem to be coming in with a TON of time code breaks - and at each FCP creates a new clip. In a single 60-minute tape I will end up with 40+ clips. Not very convenient for multi-cam editing. We've been using the deck since FCP 5.0 came out over a year ago and have not had this issue in the past.
I can't seem to recall any particular software update that we might have done on the Powermacs at the same time that could have caused this. (For awhile, two systems were on 5.1 while the other was still on 5.04 and all had the same issue). I've tried skipping the Sony deck and digitizing straight from a camera with the same problems. I've tried different firewire cables too.
Also, if I play the tape straight to an HD monitor from the deck or a camera there doesn't appear to be any time code breaks or drop-outs. If I downconvert and capture as DV, everything captures fine with no timecode breaks reported. It only seems to be HDV related.
Short of clearing off and re-formatting my hard drives, (I currently have 4Tb of data and I'm not sure where to go with it all) I'm running out of ideas on what else to try.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    I'm running:
    FCP 5.1.1
    Mac OS 10.4.6
    Quicktime 7.1.1
    Dual 2.7Ghz G5
    8Gb RAM
    GeForce 6800 GT
    Xserve RAID 5.6Tb
    Thank you.

Perhaps you have updated Quicktime recently?
If so, try a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Log and capture problems for HDV using FCP 5.0.1

I cant seem to get a picture in my log and capture browser when using HDV. The screen says my camera is connected, I see timecode correctly rolling in sync with my cameras timecode, I can use the controls, but no picture on the screen?
When I hit capture now, the capture screen pops up and gives a message "waiting for data from device".
we shot at 720p at 25fps, there is no capture preset for this in my version of FCP. Could this be the problem? Please help!!

    Thanks for responding.
It's a mac osx 10.4.11 and a 2 ghz intel core duo. I'm using easy set up in final cut pro, but there is no option for hd fire wire basic (which apple support told me to look for). The only hd options are 1080i50, i60 and 720 p30. The other hd options are for the apple intermediate codec. When I use the easy set up for hd 1080i60, then go to log and capture, it doesn't give me the preview window to set in's out, batch capture etc. It only lets me capture straight from the camera and I have to manually stop it and start it which is a major pain. Plus the clips need to be rendered once I put them in a timeline. I've shot and edited on mini dv with final cut for nearly 7 years, but now that i've tried to upgrade and shoot hd mini dv, all of these problems have arrived in capturing. I'm starting to think my version of final cut pro (5.0.1) just doesn't work with hd, unless it's very time consuming. Any ideas?
