HDV Render: blocky sequence results!

I have a LONG project with two sequences. Both contain three video tracks: two HDV (regular 1440x1080 60i preset) and on DV (720x480 anamorphic). On both sequences, I've used opacity ramps as "cross fade" between the tracks and the three way color corrector to deal with some lighting uneveness.
When I render all Act 1, it says "Conforming HDV," it takes about 4 hours (one hour and twenty minutes in the sequence), and the result is just fine.
When I render Act 2, it says the same things, takes about the same time, but the results is VERY blocky looking, jittery, etc. in the sequence viewer. If I just look at a clip, it is fine; the render files viewed with Quicktime are blocky like the sequence, so it is a real problem.
I've tried forcing it to render again, but there is no change.
Any clues?

I solved this problem.
I had a slug at the beginning the the act 2 sequence, but not as part of the act 1 sequence. I guess this such a slug disrupts the HDV conforming process. The successful act 1 sequence had a DV clip at the start of the sequence, so apparently a generated video section is problematic.
Once I eliminated the slug by putting a short HDV clip in its place with opacity set to zero, the full render was successful and the clip is sharp and clear as expected.
I'm marking this question as answered; those editing in native HDV take note.

PS: there are many who wisely counsel against editing in HDV and advise transcoding to ProRes or other format. Since I don't use any chromakey techniques (yet), there seems to be no particular advantage for me; HDV edits smoothly enough on my G5 Quad, and conforming (I only do it once at the end of major editing) takes about as long as transcoding without a hardware assist on my machine. And I get by with 1/4 the disk space and can play back more streams with just a regular firewire (7200rpm FW800) drive.

  • I can't render my sequence anymore.  How can I fix this?

I'm used to Final Cut Pro, but my employer wants me to make a promotional video for them on their computers using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.  I've been using it for a few days now but now it won't let me render my sequence anymore.  I try going to "Sequence" and then click on "Render Effects in Work Area" or "Render Entire Work Area" but nothing happens; it just starts playing from the beginnign without rendering.  I'm pretty sure I haven't changed any settings, but is there a setting that could have changed?  It's becoming a problem since I'm not able to watch what I'm editing.  I've tried restarting the computer and closing any other programs, but that hasn't seemed to work.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for the help.

Have you got a Work Area Bar set other wise it will not render.

  • How to get sequence result using httpservice

I send 2 httpservice requests to server: requestA and
requestB in sequence, but sometime I get the response of responseB

    response from B.

use AsyncToken - assign it to your HTTPService like so....
    var tok:AsyncToken = myservice.send(params)
    tok.requestName = "myRequest"
Then in your resultHandler test for the token
    if(event.token['requestName']=='myRequest'){
    do something with the event.result

  • Do I have to render every sequence?

So here's the situation, and I am trying to obtain as close to HD as I can.
I import my ACVHD footage from my sony cameras into FCE. I then place these into my timeline which I name Sequence 1. I move them around and edit how I'd like. Then I create a new sequence which I call Sequence 2. I drag Sequence 1 down into my Sequence 2 time line so I have a nice clean work space on one track. I then add a few graphics here and there. For purpose of this question, I know my graphics should have been the correct sizes but they are what they are. Sequence now is entirely red barred for me to render, but I don't. I then create another new sequence which I will call Sequence 3. When I drage Sequence 2 from my browser into Sequence 3, that too is red barred. But I add some more graphics into Sequence 3. Now I render Sequence 3 so all is good. So I want to export Sequence 3 into a quicktime movie. Since Sequence 3 is fully rendered, do I need to have Sequence 2 rendered to obtain maximum quality? Or since Sequence 3 is comprised of Sequence 2 as long as I export Sequence 3 everythign is all good? Or do I need to render each sequence as I build the project?

If the underlying media (sequences and/or clips) need to be rendered but aren't, FCE will have to render them during export. Not the ideal time to be rendering, as it will at a minimum increase your export time. Plus if you export unrendered material to a QT reference file, the rendered material will be put in the reference file itself. Not what a reference file is intended for.
You should investigate why your second sequence needs to be rendered if the material in sequence 1 did not need to be rendered. Does sequence 2 have a different sequence setting (easy setup)? Did you apply filters to the items in sequence 2? You mentioned adding graphics - if they are non-standard size and you allowed FCE to autoconform the sequence (#2) when you inserted the graphics clips, that could be the cause of the need to render everything.
With FCE, it is best to have all media clips be the same codec (DV or AIC) and frame size - it minimizes problems. Also render as you go along, not at export time.

  • Does Compressor make FCP re-render the sequence?

It seems that when we have a sequence with lots of filters, it takes compressor a longer time to compress than when we have no filters. (same length of video)
Does compressor make FCP re-render the sequence? It takes SO long sometimes... even with a quad core.
I would think it would just use the render files. Or are they not good enough?
In order to save time, we have even exported the movie, then compressed it. It took 1/4 of the time.
    Is this normal?
    Thanks

You are correct. When you create a QT movie (self contained or reference) you have to create the media that is either contained or referenced. If anything requires rendering, then FCP will use the seqeunce settings to determine the codec for any non-native media. So, if your sequence is DV and you have animation clips within, when you create the QT movie they will all be rendered into DV upon export.
If, on the other hand, you export via compressor, the base layer will be handed off to compressor. Therefore, if you have any animation files (for example) they will be handed off to Compressor natively and not via the sequence settings.
The downside is that FCP is locked up for the duration of the encoding process.

  • Main Sequence Result

I need know the main sequence result (pass, fail, error) in the postuut sequence to control my test handler. How can I determine the main sequence result in the postuut sequence?

    Hey Jimbo50,
I assume when you are talking about the MainSequence result, you are referring to whether the MainSequence passed, failed, terminated, etc.  The PostUUT callback in the default NI Sequential Process Model already tests for these different results.  They can be accessed from RunState.Sequence.Main["MainSequence Callback"].Result.Status.
Again I would highly recommend looking at the default PostUUT callback because I believe it is testing exactly what you are looking for.  Hope this helps!

  • Why do I have to render all of my HDV 1080i60 MultiCam Sequence

I have two HDV camra angle's in my multicam sequence.
I did realtime cuts between them but why do i need to render the whole sequence. I have half an hour of HDV, that takes along time. It also take's hours to render a portion of the video that i sent to motion for titling. This is really slowing me down.
Do you always have to render a multicam sequence?

No it wouldn't have to render except for effects that aren't real time.
The problem with HDV is it's not an all "i" frame format. Only 1 in 15 frames is a whole frame, the rest of the frames only contain the difference between the frames before and after (sort of)... but if you don't edit on an i frame, the video has to be rewritten in effect, creating a new GOP structure. (Group of pictures with an i frame every 15... in long gop anyway... there's short gop too.)
Most all other codecs are all i frame codecs.. every frame's information is there... so it's easier for the computer to deal with it.
DVCPROHD will create files about 4 times larger than HDV, but they're still small enough to play from a firewire drive... no need for a fast array.

  • HDV - Render Time = Export Time... what gives?

As we all should know if you are working a timeline, and all your stuff is rendered it should take far less time to EXPORT a self contained movie then if the same timeline is NOT rendered.
do this experiment and tell me if you get the same results.
Make a 1 minute HDV timeline. add filters so that the ENTIRE minute needs rendering. - RENDER IT... put a stopwatch on it so you know exactly how long it took to render.
    NOW...
EXPORT that same minute of timeline. Make it a self contained movie. Again, put a stop watch on it so you know how long it takes to export.
I will take the same amount of time. In otherwords... there is no benefit to RENDERING your timeline before you EXPORT it.
It is as if FCP doesn't recognize that your timeline has been rendered.
Am I alone in this observation.
IF indeed this is a programing SNAFU... can we get it fixed in an update?
    Thanks.

EXPORT that same minute of timeline. Make it a self contained movie. Again, put a stop watch on it so you know how long it takes to export.
I will take the same amount of time. In otherwords... there is no benefit to RENDERING your timeline before you EXPORT it.

Hiya Chris, I haven't noticed your byline before today so welcome to the forum.
This is a weird thing that FCP does; it creates new media for many export functions. We've been discussing the benefits and hassles of this for a couple of years on the DVDSP forum. No one can explain what's going on in terms we all understand.
We seem to agree that the creation of new media makes sure all renders are up to date and at the correct rez.
    The mystery continues.

  • HDV render before edit?

Just started editing HDV. I captured clips via firewire from Sony Z1U. Clips are fine. But is it typical to have the "unrendered" screen pop up when they are dragged into the timeline? Do HDV clips have to be rendered first before they can be edited or did I miss a setting somewhere?

I suspect you made the classic New Project error. You probably created a new project BEFORE changing the Easy Setup to HDV.
When you do that, the new project auto-creates a new sequence that has the properties in effect at that moment. That means the sequence is NOT HDV.
Try changing the Easy Setup to HDV 1080 FIRST, then create a new project. Then capture your HDV clips and when you edit them into the sequence, you will not have to render.
For now, though, make sure you've changed the Easy Setup to HDV 1080, create a new sequence and edit your clips into THAT sequence.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 won't render my sequences

Everytime I send a sequence to Media Encoder, it just sits there. And sits and sits, etc. At the bottom it just says "Loading "Gleaner_Shoot.prproj".
I'm using a 2008 Mac with 8 cores with 16 gigs of ram.
My footage came from the Canon HV20. I have clips at both 24p and 1080i.
I'm setting up my sequences to match the clips I'm placing in them.
One thing of note is I'm really only using 3 looong clips. Since CS4 doesn't do scene detection well. I opted to instead make subclips from the long clips and use those. 2 of them are about 30 minutes long and one is nearly an hour. Could this be the problem?
Thing is, this happens even when I do a 1-minute sequence test.
It even happens when I try to use a test sequence which contains only audio.
I've tried outputting to quicktime and MPEG 2. I was careful to set the export settings to match the sources.
After a long wait, Media Encoder gives up and I get a warning icon in the status column.  It says this:

  • Render tiff sequence starting with comp frame# in adobe media encoder?

    Hi
Does anybody know how to render out a tiff sequence with AME using an after fx comp where the tiff frame numbering generated by AME reflects the same frame numbering in an After fx comp? so if my work area bar in AE comp starts at frame 73 then the first tiff frame rendered out of AME starts at frame 73. at present it seems to always start at 0 which is no good because i then have to renumber all the frames to ensure they replace the correct frames in the image sequence. i already know how to do this rendering directly out of AE. however its nice using AME because you can continue to work in AE while AME runs in the background.
    cheers!

Unfortunately you cannot specify a start file number.
That would make a good feature request.

    Hey Todd,
I had two active projects that suddenly could not render/export.  One is quite massive and has RG Colorista quite a bit throughout it, however I could not export a timeline without any plugins on it.  The other project is also clean of plugins.  Then I started a new project and it went out just fine until I put the RG plugin on it.  But here is my newest glitch.  I just made a change to an old show and all of my titles done in Title Tool were resized and positioned.  Blown up and shifted to the right.  If I take the same file and put it on my laptop which still has not got 10.9.3, they are just fine.  Scaled properly and centered between title safe.  But now on 10.9.3 they are blown up and going off the screen.
