HDV Sony Z1 25p cine-mode workflow

Hi Ladies and Gents,
Just wanted to check the proper capture settings for capturing Sony 25p cine-mode. I've checked all the usual spots i.e. here, creative cow etc but just wanted some your thoughts.
Thanks,
Jimmy

Tom,
I don't think that your issue is with the Z1. I think that it is with HDV footage in general (nasty format and all) but you don't want to hear that so let's work on getting you going.
1) You do need some sort of external monitor. YOu have several options, Cheapest is to buy a Matrox MXO and an Apple or Dell 24" monitor. Other options include cards from AJA or Blackmagic. If you are doing everything in HDV I would recommend something from AJA or BM that way you can capture to a more easily editable format like DVCProHD. Do a search for Kona, Blackmagic or capture cards aadn you will find a wealth of info.
2) for this footage you need to look at the original tapes on an HD tv and see if you are seeing the same thing. This will determine if it is a compressor issue.
3) How low did you set your bit rate? Max should be below 7 or some DVD players will have issues.
4) in DVDSP you should be able to bring in your QT ref file and it will encode it for you. If it won't import it makes me wonder if it is being exported properly. Are you going out of FCP by FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME>with current settings, and check Make Movie Self-contained?
One more thing, in this process you are not working with film, others here may be more harsh about this but you are using video so let's call it what it is.

  • HDV/ sony ZIU workflow for editing & mastering

I'm new to this forum so first off thanks for having me.
I'm trying to develope a successful workflow that will carry this studio throught the upcoming year of producion.
We wil be shooting HDV w/ the Z1U and editing in FCP 5.0...
We need to edit webisodes weekely as well as log and master the HDV footage for stock footage, broadcast use and other future applications.
Here is my initial game plan:
I was planning to work in SD by capturing the footage with the downconvert option (HDV-DV) strait off the camera. I'm doing this to keep my logging speed and disc space low. Also, I'm assuming that for exporting QTs for the web the quality will still look great.
Then later for my HDV masters I will open a new project in FCP, compile all my clips and re-capture the footage in HDV.
At this point I would be running all my FCP setups for native HD, 1080i60, etc. Then, Print to Video from my FCP project back to the Sony Z1U camera.
Does this make sense to other out there, considering we can't afford and HDcam deck or AJA Kona at this juncture?
Has anyone had issues re-capturing footage in HDV and/or printing back to tape?
    Thanks and Aloha,

    Welcome!
I can't comment on you workflow,
however since you are looking towards the future, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your OS X to 10.4.8, and purchase the FInal Cut Studio 5.1 crossgrade for $50.00 (before offer expires sometime in Dec I believe).

FInal Cut Pro 5 was last updated to 5.0.4, there will be no more updates.

  • HV30 - 24p HDV CINE MODE - but DV output

    Hi,
I just bought a HV30 and I did some footage on 24p (I know it is not recognize with iMovie) cine HDV mode.
    2 questions :
    - I do my editing and then when it is time to export the final movie I can't do it in HD. The max rez is 960*540 ? Any ideas, would it be the consequences of shooting 24p?
    - During that editing after few clips have been chosen I can't add any transition anymore. It just don't take it. Any ideas again?
Thank you in advance for your help. That is totally new to me. I understand that iMovie is a little bit short if you want to do serious editing but still it's far from bad. Though I am really impressed by Final Cut... So powerful.

thanks for The Big Green One
.. I'm an Apple User for ~22y, and all that time, Apple had that 'no reading needed'-attitude - imagine my surprise, when I found a 'manual' for iMovie08!
and, to defend Apple: it's called Expert Option (was called..). and it found 'somehow' its way into a consumer app.. which, another Apple attitude, usually has NO options. (Apple= easy, but limited, Windows=zillion of options, getting lost..). the average Daddy-does-movies doesn't need all that stuff.. 24p IS exotic.. in a 20$-app.
FCE includes a ~1400 pgs 'manual' - as pdf (.. me went to a copyshop.. they made me a real 'book'/two out of it..). Only the FCsuite comes with half-a-ton of dead-tree manuals..

  • HDV 25p Final Cut Workflow Question

    Hello,
After reading a lot of material I'm trying to come to some conclusion about which workflow to use, to balance between: the lower spec system I've got, getting fine graphic elements, being able to take the project through Color, and to end with an HD(V) master project file.
It would be great if others with experience with these issues could comment on the workflow I'm proposing.
I'm running an iMac with the latest Final Cut Studio programs and one 500GB firewire drive for video and render files.
    Workflow:
    1 - Camera aquisition is with Canon's HV20 - HDV 25p
2 - Capture over firewire to a 25p HDV sequence
3 - Edit in HDV (with the Render Codec as ProRes 422 - in User Preferences)
4 - Add any Motion files, Titles, LiveType or whatever else needs to go in the timeline
5 - When complete, duplicate the sequence and change the settings in the new sequence to ProRes 422
6 - Render Timeline as full ProRes 422
7 - Export to Color, render Color files out and place in a new ProRes 422 timeline
8 - Export self-contained Quicktime with current settings as the Master
Comments please. I'm no expert, but I'm trying to settle on a decent workflow.
If I'm right, this should make one conversion from HDV to ProRes 422 before going through Color (while also taking advantage of ProRes for the rendering of all the Motion graphics and Title clips). Then one further render coming out of Color.
It seems pretty clean and not to extanious for my system, although I'm still working on the theory.
    Any workflow experts, please advise!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    No one?
The main part I'm wondering about is:
HDV timeline, but render settings to ProRes and then moving the whole thing to render out as a ProRes file (possibly going through Color at that point - and if so, coming back to a ProRes timeline and doing a self-contained Quicktime export).
I basically said it all in the first post. If someone's tried it, or has a better work flow for HDV it would be great to hear.

  • Print to video HDV Sony Z1

    Hi
I am having a problem printing to video. I have my finished sequence and my camera in VCR mode - I have checked with log and capture for communication and I can control the camera fine. The camera acknowledges HDV/DV in and I don't have any playback selected. In the print to video it is set up for HDV1080 50i as is the camera so off we go, ticking the box for automatic starting - I print to video and it says conforming HDV video for about 18 minutes (5 minute sequence). When it gets to having done this (it seems to go through this twice) and all there is to do is press OK, it plays back full screen on the mac but nothing happens on the deck. A fresh tape is in there and the tab is out - what have I done wrong?
    Any suggestions appreciated
    Matt

    Tim Kuhlman-
Have you tested the camera with non-HDV just to make sure the camera works?

  • Best Sony EX-3 XDCAM EX workflow (SxS into FCPro)

    Hey
I am doing a documentary project shot
with the Sony EX-3 tapeless camera
and I have the correct plug-ins and have
successfully Logged and Transferred some test files
    into Final Cut Pro 6
My question is that I have over 7 different production days'
worth of footage (200+ gigs on a Firewire 800 external drive)
and some of it was data-wrangled it different ways
(e.g. some was Logged & Transferred on-location, the majority
was dragged and dropped directly from the tapeless card)
I don't know how to correctly "consolidate" all these files
so they're not all living in BPAV and CLPR nested folders
and can simply be in one central Capture Scratch folder
and all be organized in sub-folders there according to production days
I know this is more of a Sony-esque question, but does
anyone have experiencing with this workflow in Final Cut
and how to best make the job run smoothly, especially for a
long-form feature that will have lots of more SxS files coming in down the road
    thank you

If you have mixed BPAV folders together or removed any of the files from these folders you may be in trouble. The proper way of managing the BPAV folder is to make a new folder for each cards BPAV folder and never mixing BPAV folders together. I have heard that orphan mp4 files can be fixed using the latest Sony Clip Browser program, but I haven't tried this.

  • AD PasswordSync - Direct mode workflow setup

Is there any information out there pertaining to setting up passwordSync in AD with IDM that goes into detail of how the process flows through each component? I'm looking for a more detailed explaination of IDM to gateway to AD to passSync back to IDM. Specifically:
    - When passSync send the password back to IDM in direct mode, does IDM send it back to the AD resource? Why or Why not?
    - If a load-balancer is in front of 2 gateways, what adverse effects will it have on IDM and AD? Why?
    Thanks,

    - When passSync send the password back to IDM in direct mode, does IDM send it back to the AD resource? Why or Why not?
Answer : NO, this is default behavior of pass sync workflow
    - If a load-balancer is in front of 2 gateways, what adverse effects will it have on IDM and AD? Why?
Answer : Gateways are not involved in Pass Sync Process itself, only if you have resources OTHER than AD, which are being managed via gateway.
BY the way - gateways can not work in active-active mode, this is not supported architecture. (only failover mode Active - Passive)

  • Ingesting HDV and AVCHD in same project - workflow?

Whats the workflow with ingesting HDV and AVCHD into same project? Im guessing convert both to 'Apple intermediate codec' i think this is straightforward for avchd as is in prefs pane of log and transfer, but how do i do this for hdv?
Also set the avchd to record at 1080i or does it not make much difference once captured / pro ressed up.?

Bring both in as ProRes. Much more processor efficient.

  • I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. Every time I'm importing vedeo using MiniDV HDV Sony camera, FCP X is importing normally, with 2.5 GB of RAM free. Then, after 10 or 15 min of importing, FCP is frozen, and free RAM is close to zero. What happens?

I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. When I turn FCP X, I usually have 2.5 RAM free and the program works normally when I edit. The issue is importing video. I use a Sony HDV camera to import from miniDV tapes, and Apple says Sony HDVs are supported. Yet every time I'm importing, it works normally for 10-15 min, then the amount of free RAM quickly (yet gradually) is reduced to almost zero (I used Memory Clean to dicover it) and then FCP X got frozen and I need to force quit it and start all over again, to work for another 15 min. Horrible! What is it?

Are using 10.0.7 (the latest version)?
Memory problems seem to have been alleviated with 10.0.6 and 10.0.7.
Please post the screenshots of Activity Monitor, as Tom asked. This will at least let us see if it is FCP X itself gobbling a lot of RAM or if you are suffering from the problem of OS X not releasing "Inactive Memory" in a timely manner - an issue that has been there for a long time :-(
You didn't mention whether you have the 27" or 21.5" iMac. Unfortunately, in the 21.5" adding RAM is a big hassle. But if you have the 27", then seriously consider upping the RAM. It is quite inexpensive, from the likes of Crucial or other reputable third parties.

  • Cannot pair BH202 with Sony K510i in handsfree mod...

Hi, I am trying to pair my recently bought Nokia BH202 headset with my Sony Ericsson K510i. The pairing works fine and so does the headset but I can use only the headset profile and not the handsfree profile. I can therefore receive and make calls etc., but cannot use the voice dialing and other voice control features via the BH202 headset. I do know that both BH202 and K510i support the bluetooth handsfree profile.
Are the handsfree modes of BH202 and K510i incompatible in some way (version mismatch perhaps)? Or do I need to do something special while pairing or later?
    Any help will be appreciated.

Well, interoperability is the whole point of defining standards.
What good would BT be if devices from different vendors did not
    interoperate?
In this specific instance, I do know that both devices (BH202 and K510i) support the hands-free profile, so the combination should work in theory. Can someone educate me on what might be going wrong in practice and whether it is at all possible to work around or fix the problem?
    Thanks.

Dose sleep mode with selecting picture consume batt energy more than without showing one?
    Thank you verymuch
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for your question - actually it really shouldn't make any difference.  Battery power is consumed when an E ink display changes but not during the time the page itself is displayed, so matter what you have on the screen the power consumption should stay the same.
