  • Loss of HDV support after latest Adobe patches...

I recently applied the latest patches that were released for AE, PPRo and a few of the other applications in the master suite and after the patches were applied I lost the abilty to edit HDV in PPRo and in AE.  In PPro, it actually grayed out the option to deactivate the product, which makes it seem like it has somehow deactivated my product, but in AE the deactivate option is still there. I have read that if you are running the trial version HDV is not supported, so I am thinking it somehow deactivated my products.  Anyone else experience this problem?

    Skeeze:
Your problem may be related to this issue, mentioned in Todd Kopriva's blog, Region of Interest.
If you downloaded the After Effects 9.0 trial, then updated to After Effects 9.0.1, and then activated the application with a serial number after purchasing a license (all in exactly that order), then the After Effects 9.0.2 update will fail to update your third-party content, like the Cycore (CC) effect plug-ins. It appears that uninstalling the third-party content and then restarting the application will cause the updated third-party content to be installed correctly.
Please note that support for HDV, AVCHD and other MPEG-based formarts relies on technologies licensed from third party developers, and which are installed as part of the third party content package. So I would definitely start by trying this.

  • HDV support in Encore 2.0?

I have searched the "What's new" online documantation and I see nothing about support for HDV. Can anyone say for sure if Encore 2.0 supports HDV video formats?

I don't work for Adobe so know only what I read here and at other forums
Adobe Premiere Elements contains PARTS of Premiere Pro and PARTS of Encore all in one product... so you may edit the video and author a DVD from one product... but with fewer options than either Premiere Pro or Encore DVD
Premire Pro for editing and Encore DVD for authoring both have more options than Premiere Elements
If you want an all-in-one product, and do not need more options than are available, Premiere Elements may be the product for you... but you would have to read at the PE forum to find out if it will accept any type of HiDef input file or not (the output to DVD is, of course, going to be a "regular" video stream for the DVD specification)
The simple fact of Encore is that it is not an editing product, and therefore does not do what Premiere Pro will do... and that is by the decision of the Adobe product managers
Asking for video editing features in Encore is not, as far as I know from anything that has ever been said in this forum, going to result in those features being added to Encore... that is why there is a Premiere Pro product

  • HDV Support disappears after latest patch installed

I have the master collection and when the latest set of patches is applied PPRo no longer recognizes HDV (DV is the only choice).  AFter effects also stops supporting m2t files, but the fix for it is to uninstall the 3rd party components and let AE reinstall them upon launching.  Unfortunately that does not work for PPRO...anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

This solution has been offered before, but unfortunately, that only comes up if your installation of CS4 is faulty to begin with. If your installation is OK, your won't find that option in the Control Panel. If you only have this option because the installation is faulty, my preference would be to uninstall and reinstall, otherwise who knows what other problems you run into.

  • Which versions of Final Cut Pro support HD video?

Which versions of Final Cut Pro support HD video? (Other than 6)

Uncompressed HD...that can be done with FCP 4.5 or higher. But as said, you need a capture card, no matter what version you use.
DVCPRO HD support started in FCP 4.5. P2 DVCPRO HD support started with 5.0.4. HDV support started with FCP 5.0, and is much better in FCP 5.1. XDCAM started in FCP 5.0, better in 5.1. AVCHD requires 5.1, and AVCIntra requires FCP 6.

  • HDV capture card

I'm looking for a capture card that support HDV camcorders, for G5.
But it seems that doesn't exist any card: I found only HD or SD capture cards.
The only HDV capture card that is able to native editing hdv video in realtime from hdv camcorders is the canopus EDIUS NX (and canopus velxus 300 in Japan); but the problem is that canopus hdv card is only for PC.
I called canopus and they said me that these cards will be for MAC when Apple will release the new powermac intel-based.
So I read in the apple FCP 5 HD page this:
    "Native HDV Support
Final Cut Pro 5 supports native long-GOP MPEG-2 editing for working with camera-original HDV video. Unlike other solutions, Final Cut Pro 5 acquires HDV media via FireWire and keeps it in the original format, transferring it into the system without any generation loss. Output via FireWire back to an HDV camera or deck, or transfer your native HDV to DVD Studio Pro 4 for an end-to-end native HDV workflow."
I know that it is not possible capture a video by firewire from a camcorder without further compressing it. I know that it is for this reason that pro use capture cards (that have dedicated processors for this).
So I think that there aren't HDV capture cards for mac because the hardware companies don't make new cards for only few months, so they're waiting the new intel-based macs. If so, this firewire technology of final cut pro 5 is a compromise for these last times, or is it really like the capture-card processing? and if so, how is it possible capturing a hdv video by firewire without further compressing it?
Do you know about a HDV card for MAC or is it really good using Final Cut Pro HD 5 with firewire ?
    Thank you.

It all depends on what type of work you are doing...
Capture Cards are for use with other formats that cannot be captured via firewire: BetaSP, Digibeta, HDCAM, D5. They are also require for outputting to these formats.
Not many broadcast facilities will take a DVCAM master...some will, but most won't. And depending on your client, they may or may not take an HDV master. They may want an HDCAM or D5 master if they are producing HD content. For that you need a capture card and high speed drive RAIDS.
Why do other pricier systems come with capture cards? Because they are sold that way. FCP, out of the box, is ready to edit DV, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD and HDV...FULL RESOLUTION...no compression. Any need to do higher end requires a capture card.

  • HDV import iMovie vs FinalCut

I have a quick question regarding the HDV import in iMovie. I read on the apple webpage the Final Cut is the only (Apple) video editing software that has native HDV support for editing and that iMovie converts to another apple format.
When using iMovie: what are the effects of the converting:
    (1) does the conversion makes the import slower (so do I have to wait after the import for the conversion to happen?
    (2) does the conversion have any undesired effect on the quality of the video or is it as good as the original HDV
--> so the basic question is: will I feel or see any difference because of that conversion?
For the equipment that I'm using (/planing to use):
    - 20" Intel iMac with 2GB of Memory
    - latest iMovie HD 6
    - I'm planing to get a Sony HDR-HC7
    - I have 100GB free on the internal Harddrive and tons free on external USB2 drives.
thanks for any advise here ... this will help me to figure out if I go ahead to get a HDV camcorder or not (since for now I don't want to spend another 1k for new software since the camcorder is already 1k)
    thanks
    -Uwe

    thanks for the quick reply.
How does the import work than: does it read from the tape in HDV and than converts it or does it slow down the import as needed (don't know if that is possible)?
I guess there is no good answer for this one: but how much longer do you guess it is (I have an Intel iMac ... maybe someone here as experiance with iMac)
    [ ] almost realtime
    [ ] 2x
    [ ] 3x
    [ ] better don't do it
I'm well aware that the contents of the video might have an impact on the converstion time and the diskspace (I read somewhere that HDV video compared to DV video needs anything between 2 and 5 times as much diskspace)
    thanks again

  • Is Sony HDVFX7 compatible with FCP...Can it capture HDV footage?

I have been trying to capture video from the sony FX7 but FCP doesn,t seem to recognize the camera.

You will need FC 5.0.4 or better to have HDV support. Before connecting any firewire cables make sure your camera is setup to ouput HDV by turning it in VTR mode and find the Menu, Rec In/Out, ilink conv, and set to off. In FC use an HDV easy setup to match your camera and set your scratch disk. Shut down your computer connect the firewire cable to computer and camera then re-boot.
Open FC from the project you used to setup the HDV project and verify the easy HDV setup, turn on the camera in VTR mode, open log and capture and play the tape from within the deck controls, capture as needed.

  • Upgrade to FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9 stops DV

    Hi all,
Have upgraded to from OSX 10.3.9 to OSX 10.4 to allow me to upgrade FCP from 4.5 to 5.1 in order to add HDV support.
First use after upgrading and FCP is no longer recognising DV camera through Firewire. Subsequently upgraded to OSX 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 but still have the same problem.
Can control the camera from log and capture, but preview disabled and capturing insists that no device is selected. Capture presets state that Video Device DV Video is missing
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem?
    TIA

  • A question of resources

    Hi, all -
I work for a school district and we have a lab in each building filled with eMacs. At each campus, we're running the latest version of iLife, but at one campus, the eMacs are a year older than the other. They're 700 MHz machines with a gig of RAM.
iMovie, for some reason, has always crashed a LOT in this lab. More than in the other school, which has eMacs a year newer (but, owing to upgrade cycles, is occasionally a year behind the other lab in terms of OS & application upgrades).
Anyway, my boss asked me today to find out if iMovie HD really is more of a resource hog than the previous version of iMovie. That is, does it - simply due to its HDV support - really require more system resources to run? (He wants to know if we should downgrade back to the earlier version to prevent all the crashing.)*
My gut-level response is that it does not, unless you really are using HDV footage. Seems to me, if it's only dealing with straight DV material, it won't even bother loading or using the HDV codec, and should play nice with the system.
I feel that if I suddenly hook up my personal HDV camera to it and ingest some footage, the program should then slow down on our eMacs simply because it now has to crunch more compressed video and a higher pixel count.
Am I right about this? Is there any real data to support it? Or am I just plain wrong?
If anyone knows, please feel free to chime in... especially any real Apple tech people lurking out there. One way or another, I'd like to have some technical-level input on this.
*(As to the question of downgrading, I feel that while it's possible the older version bogarts fewer system resources, it also doesn't benefit from bug fixes introduced in the newer version... I suspect it's workflow and the files that students try to bring into the program which are causing the crashing, more than the software itself.)
    - Mike

... especially any real Apple tech people lurking out there. ...
I dare to say: neverever... this is a user2user board, never saw in THIS section of a board a host nor employee..
    a) min. requirements..
see my specs: I'm running iMHD5 smoothly on a system, clearly under min.specs... (esp. iDVD)
    b) what I've read here so far - avoid a "mixture" of apps and QT components...:
    10.3.x. + QT 6.x + iLife 5
    or...
    10.4.x + QT 7.x + iLIfe 6
we read lots of trouble, people using a mix; makes apps unstable, crashing, misbehaving...
    c) MacOsX needs RAM, lotsof... when upgrading my Cube from 512 to 1GB RAM - woooshsh!! less RAM >> lots of hd activity >> slow/if hd crowded >> unstable
    d) video needs harddrive space, MacOsX needs hd space.. make sure, you have ALLWAYS 5 - 15GB free on internal (external don't matter in this issue) drive... that makes system and apps stable&smooth ...
    e) no HiDef video in use here, but what I've read so far: HDcontent needs a fast/powerful system for importing, 'cause it has to convert first into Apple Intermediate Codec; HiDef needs 4 - 5x more harrddrive space compared to .dv; ... as long as you stay .dv .. should work ...
    f) iLife 4 >> 5 made a quantum leap in file-management, mainly the "non distructive editing" feature - means: be careful/wise with import. import just parts of tape, you need for editing; avoid laaaaarge, single clips, try to import small segments...
    g) iLife 5 >> 6 made a quantum leap in grafic card resources.. read the specs Matthew linked to ... in a school, I don't see any need for fancy "themes" ... you shoud learn, to do movie editing manually ;-)))
... any letters left, I could fill... ?
    hope, you found something helpful....................

  • Need help importing HD footage from external hard drive

I have an external hard drive with some footage from a friend. I cannot view the footage either in QT or through importing to FCP. I have version 4.5 of FCP HD. The audio works on the clips, but the video does not. Im guessing it might be a format issue, as the footage is HD footage shot at 24P. I've tried opening a separate timeline and changing the settings there, but that didnt seem to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that the footage is HDV, and FCP 4.5 cannot work with HDV. That format came out over a year after FCP 4.5 was released. FCP 4.5 was dubbed FCP HD because it worked with DVCPRO HD footage natively. HDV support didn't hit FCP until 5.0.
You have options. Because HDV came out when FCP 4.5 was in use and didn't work with it, a couple companies made solutions to import this footage. www.lumierehd.com and www.hdvxdv.com.
BUT...that will get you the HDV footage at 29.97...60i. HDV 24p support didn't arrive until FCP 5.1.2. So you can try those solutions and see what happens, but most likely you'll have to upgrade to the latest version of FCP...6.0.2

  • Help with FCP and long project editing - Thanks!

I have posted several questions in this discussion group and in the iMovie group to no avail. I get a lot of answers, but not from anyone who has actually done any of the editing I am seeking. So if anyone has actually done the editing I am describing below -- I appreciate your help. Yes, I have searched the archives -- but again, I see a lot of confusing feedback. I have been working on this for three days now and it's driving me crazy! I have discovered that iMoive is $#@% -- and does not work with a long project, (40 minutes) so I am thinking about switching to FCP-HD. Thanks.
    Here goes:
1: I need to transfer original master footage, 1080i HDV from a Sony HDR-FX1 to an editing program, edit the tapes (over 5 hours total) into a 50 minute "program". I then need to "share" or export the footage back to a new tape, using the Sony HDR-FX1 as the receiving camera. Simple enough.
2: I need to make sure the outgoing footage is of equal quality as the original footage taken from the camera. I am guessing here, that the footage can be edited in FCP-5 as "native" -- then transferred back to the Sony?
3: I am assuming that the native footage is just that -- and will not require the long process of converting to another format, e.g., ASI that takes hours to
    render. (as in iMovie).
4: I am assuming I can edit and view HDV as native footage in FCP in real time, like iMovie, via firewire from the camera?
    I really appreciate any assistance.
    Chance

Welcome to the family, you'll be joining us soon.
The FCP product page says: > It features powerful new multicamera editing, native HDV support, ... edit everything from DV and SD to DVCPRO HD and fully uncompressed 10-bit high-definition video. Or work with new formats like native HDV (long-GOP MPEG2) and 50Mbps IMX... HD editing requires a 1GHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 and 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended).<
You seem to have the hardware including the Flux-o-pator, but, really, you want to talk to an Apple reseller who handles FCP and understands HDV via Sony. I don't like the way you're using "I am assuming..." You can't assume anything. Give them a chance to sell you FCP or Studio and go demo your camera on their system. You will have concrete evidence of the minimum machine specs and how well you can get your files in and out of the application.
Call you local Mac user group and try to locate other FCP users.
Try also the creativecow.net forums for Sony HD products.
Google your camera model for support groups.

  • 1080i in Final Cut HD 4.5

This really driving me nuts! I just bought a Sony HCR-HCS HDV camera. It records full 1080i and 720 DV. I thought since I have a DVCPRO HD 1080i60 setting I could record to my HDV cam. It will recognizes it at 720X480 4:3 and anamorphic. But wont at 1080i. Is there a firewire update for this? I have read that in new versions of FC. There is a Sony DV setting? Can I get this into my FCP HD 4.5?

FCP 4.5 does not support HDV, as that format was introduced two years after FCP 4.5 was released. You need to get FCP 6 to work with HDV (support for HDV came with FCP 5.0, which is no longer available).
And if you want to capture HDV as DVCPRO HD, then you'll need an HD capture card. HDV and DVCPRO HD are different flavors of HD, and FCP 4.5 does support DVCPRO HD...just not HDV.
    Gotta upgrade.

  • How to ingest Canon MXF files into FCP 7

All afternoon I've been trying to figure out how to get Final Cut Pro 7 to recognize .mxf files generated by a Canon FS-CV hard drive, without much luck. This device has 3 options of format: .m2t, .mxf and Quicktime. I've found that the Quicktime files are not openable by Quicktime Pro 7.7 and gives me the bewildering error
"An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie."
Okay, so that's not working, let's try Plan B. Since I have a P2 camera, .mxf is a familiar sight so I tried that one. L&T doesn't recognize anything about it, so that's a no-go. The only reliable workflow I've found so far is to transcode the .m2t files to ProRes using Mpeg Streamclip. Okay, that works, but is that the only one of these that'll work with FCP? Quicktime format seemed like a no-brainer. Why won't it open and/or play? I've Googled and Googled and have found plenty of people asking this question but no useful answers so far. And why doesn't FCP Log & Transfer recognize these .mxf files? If Canon has a special plugin for this, I haven't been able to find it through the byzantine maze they call a web site.
    Any suggestions are welcomed.

You're searching for the wrong device. It's a recorder made by Focus Enhancements, not Canon. Try
