HDV to iPod

I have a 1 min HDV movie that I'd like to encode for the ipod. How?
Thanks

Sorry, let me explain what I mean by metadata. Metadata (data about data) is written by the 'Convert to iPod' function so that iPods (in particular) and iTunes know that the file is compatible.
This is important because you can - via other methods, like Export to MPEG-4 - produce files that meet the iPod video spec (320x240, up to 700kbps, H.264 codec, etc) but in order for them to actually be played on (and thus transfered to) an iPod, users will need to make use of the Convert Selection for iPod function in iTunes. (and really, what's the point of doing all the work to make it iPod compatible if the user has to convert it anyway)
Now, back in QT 7 Pro, the Movie to iPod (320x240) setting produces an .m4v file (linked to iTunes) by default. Simply altering the file extension to .mov helps when it comes to web downloads - because more browsers & anti-virus programs recognize the .mov extension - but it does not change anything about the file other than program it's linked with (.mov is linked to QuickTime Player). When you import your .mov into iTunes, it can be transfered to an iPod without adjustment.

  • CS3 Adobe Media Encoder: HDV to PSP 720x480 ?

Using the factory setting 'Sony PSP Widescreen High Quality' I am able to encode this material at 368x208 29.97fps, but I am losing way too much quality at this setting.
I cannot seem to encode to a playable Sony PSP (3000) video at 720x480. I have tried numerous various 'levels', and VBR/CBR settings. Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Has anyone had success at this?
The clips I am trying to encode are in HDV format (generated via TMPGenc):
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 1.0 GB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 1440
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.333

    Jim,
Thanks for the info. I verified that 480x272 spec. When I have used consumer encoders for PSP, they have a 720x480 setting, and in fact, the PSP itself reports the file as being 720x480, so it is very misleading.
I'll try to encode at 480x272.
Of course I realize media on smaller screens doesn't look as good, but there are many other reasons for putting video on devices like PSP, iPOD, cell phones, etc...

  • *** What video output quality can I do from iPod video onto a tv?

I have HDV footage. Wondering if I have to squish it to mpeg-4 to get it onto my iPod or could I load it as full quality onto my iPod video (about 1.3 gb) and then connect it to a tv and show it full quality on the tv? Would that work? What kind of output connectors does the iPod video have?

You do have to convert it to mp4. And the resolution is only 320 X 240, so you'll be pretty disappointed in the picture quality on a tv. Video on the iPod is primarilly for viewing on the pod itself. I was however surprised how good some dvd material I have looked considering that small resolution. I had considered loading tons of movies onto mine for camping trips and travel, but I think I'll just continue to pack up a bunch of DVDs and a player for that considering how much better it looks. 320 x 240 is pretty tiny. But it is pretty novel to play movies and tv from such a compact player. Oh yeah, you'll also need an iPod-specific video cord to attach to a tv or monitor. A regular A/V mini plug won't work.
    Good luck and have fun.

  • Problem syncing itunes 12 with ipod classic on a PC

Hi I just purchased a new Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 and installed the latest itunes 12 on it, but it won't sync with my ipod classic.  The itunes detects my ipod classic, but won't sync the music files and just ejects the ipod instead.  I have tried installing an older version of itunes onto my computer (version 11) but version 11 won't work on this laptop.  Please help!

Unfortunately I cannot get the movies to play through Quicktime at all on the PC - the movie seems to play (timer runs and the little triagle moves), but all I get is a blank screen... The first time I tried to play one of the files, QT told me I may need to download additional codecs (although it did not indicate which one) - and directed me to the third-party codec download site. However, after downloading several of the different codecs, the .mov files still won't play through QT on the PC.
Rule of Thumb: never download codec components arbitrarily. Since the files load into the QT Player, what you should have done was open the "Inspector" window and check the "Format:" entry to see which codec was used to compressed the video and then download the "correct" QT codec component and only the needed one.
Is it not possible to get these files to play on a PC since they were imported and made on an iMac with iMovie?
I would tend to suspect that you may be using an HDD or DVD camcorder here. Basically, the MOV file container is generic and can hold any valid combination of audio and video compression formats. DV would have imported as DV content. AVCHD or HDV would have imported as AIC/AIFF content which is normally supported intrinsically by QT. On the other hand, the content from MPEG2/AC3 based camcorders employs a special iMovie '08 import/conversion module which converts the AC3 to AIFF and the MPEG-2 "P-frames" and "B-frames" to "I-frames" which effectively turns the video into an M-JPEG track but leaves it labeled as MPEG-2 content which would likely confuse the QT Player. Further, if iLife '08 itself installs the playback component for this compression combination, you may not be able to locate/install a Windows version of this playback codec at all and may end up having to convert your DVD stored MOV files on an iLife '08 equipped Mac.

  • Output to 16:9 for iPod

When I use Convert using Quicktime, I have difficulty getting it to preserve the 16:9 HDV 1080i format for output.
Basically I want to create a .MOV file with the correct apsect ratio for download from the web. I also want to generate another .MOV file for the corresponding PodCast.
When I use the converter in FCP, it compresses the image into 4:3.
In the Sequence Settings the 16:9 ratio is displayed but Anamorphic is NOT checked. Do I need to check that and if so, will I need to do this with each new 16:9 project?

Bob -- try this workflow on a small piece and see if it doesn't work for you...
File - Export - Quicktime Conversion - make sure it's set for Quicktime Movie export.
Change compression method to BROADBAND HIGH. THEN click OPTION and then SIZE... change size to 480x270 and click out to save.
    Let it run.
Then, open THAT in iTunes and using iTunes, select the video file and right click (control-click) and choose 'convert for iPod.'
    That's always worked for me.
When you are done, do another right click on the video file in iTunes and do a SHOW FILE IN FINDER (or something like that.) Look for the .m4v file... that's the iPod video one. Open it up and see if it isn't 16:9.
    Good luck,

  • HDV exports have new sound sync problem in Quick Time

    Hi
I'm on FCP 5.1.4. Prior to a few weeks ago, I've had no issue with exporting HDV files and playing on QuickTime. Now, regardless of the Quicktime Conversion I use, the exported video lags the sound. I went back to old projects and exported. Same thing. All the clips play fine in FCP. QuickTime is 7.5. I've read elsewhere people have had to downgrade to prior versions of QT. Anyone have a similar problem or have an idea what the root cause might be?
Specs of captured footage (pretty normal)
    Capture video: 1440x1080
    Copressor: HDV108060i
    Video Rate: 29.97
    Audeo: 48hz
Hope we can get some help here because I know others have the problem--and like me--are dead in the water on projects.
    Thanks,
    Phil

Figured out a solution. For those of you who have equipment/software similar to mine, FCP 5.4.1, IMAC G5 and QT 7.5. My project had multiple layered soundtracks. Sending to QT with any kind of compression didn't work. I wanted to ultimately get to an IPOD format. Here's what I did:
    Export project as self-contained movie.
Open QT (don't just click on the file - it'll launch FCP).
Open the reference file you just made.
It'll open, but probably stutter because size of raw file; doesn't matter.
    Stop QT from playing.
Choose Export; then any file type you want that's smaller.
    I chose IPOD.
    Works flawlessly.

  • Exporting a .mp4 at 640x360 and having it be able to play on the iPod

I have put together a video in Final Cut Express that was in HDV from my video camera. I want it to be able to play in Quicktime and through iTunes in case someone wants to put it on their iPod or iPhone. It works great when played using Quicktime but if I try and send it to my iPhone I get an error that reads ("myvideo" was not copied to the iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone).
I'm guessing that I have something minor wrong on my export settings. I have a similar video that someone else did that is 640x360, H.264 & 29.97 fps and it works fine in both iTunes and Quicktime. If I double-click on it on the desktop of my MacBook Pro it runs in Quicktime, If I drag it into iTunes I can sync and play it on my iPhone. I looked at the movie properties in Quicktime and they seem to have the same settings but obviously something is not completely correct. Please help!

I tried exporting with the iPhone preset and I get an m4v instead of the mp4. Yes it works with the iPhone but then it appears to play only with iTunes and not Quicktime.

  • Converting a 16:9 video for iPod

I exported from FCP a 16:9 video using Compressor for use on an iPod. When I play it though it looks squished horizontally and the people look thinner. Is there something else I need to do to get this to look right?

You've probably discovered this by now, but if you're exporting to iPod, there are certain things that you must do differently (especially in comparison to exporting for DVD):
Do not export directly to Compressor from FCP. While this produces the best quality with MPEG-2 files, Compressor doesn't read chapter markers (at all) or the aspect ratio correctly (in most cases) for .m4v files.
Manually resize your QT movie. If you're using anamorphic video (DV, 8-bit) or a video format where the display size is different from the codec's frame size (HDV, DVCProHD), export a reference movie from FCP. Then, in QuickTime Pro, alter your movie's dimensions to suit the display size (ie, adjust anamorphic NTSC DV to 720x404). Then drop your QT ref movie into Compressor and select the iPod setting.
But, being that some time has passed since you've asked this question, I'm guessing you've learned these lessons (like me) the hard way...

  • What is the best compression for HDV 1080i60 video to be played on iTunes?

    Hello guys,
I would like to make an HDV video podcast for iTunes and possibly for other podcasting sites. My source format is HVD 1080i60, each episode would be about 10 minutes long. So I am wondering what format, compression and settings work best while keeping reasonable quality.
Thank you for any tip or advise.

One thing I forgot to mention: the Apple TV setting H.264 file won't play on an iPod. If you did need an iPod/iPhone compatible version, then the export setting to use would be Movie to iPod. This will make a 640x360 file. The full explanation of the differences between iPod and Apple TV formats is at http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html#formattingvideo

  • What compression to use for HDV video? Is Flash supported?

    Hello folks,
I want to produce a HDV videopodcast. My webserver only has 500MB of space available, so I will need to compress this video files. But what videofiles are allowed in iTunes? The most ideal would be to convert my .mov files into Flash .flv files. But is Flash supperted in iTunes? Or what other options I have to end up with a maximum of 40 MB of video? (the original file is about 1GB)
Thank you so much for any input or advise.
    Cheers

iTunes and QuickTime do not use Flash. If you want to create something in HD, your file size will likely be much larger. More on recommended podcast video formats for iTunes, Apple TV, and iPods:

  • Hey guys/gals! for some reason I can't get the ipod on iphone to work.

I touch the ipod icon, and the screen turns blank for a few seconds and then reverts to the home screen...any ideas?
    Thanks.

Yeah, you're in the wrong forum. But when you get this posted on the right forum, I expect they wlll suggest the problem is with either the camera's port or its settings – since capture works with other cameras and presumably the same cable. So doublecheck to ensure your camera is set to hdv if captuiring hdv and so forth.

  • HDV "Stream Problem" while digitizing.

I am trying to digitize some HDV footage shot in 720p30. I get deck control I can play the footage in the capture window but when I try to capture now it will capture only a few seconds and then stop and give me this message.
    "Stream Problem"
"Capture was stopped due to a problem with the incoming stream. This might be a problem with the tape. All media up to this point has been preserved."
Does anyone know what is going on here or how to fix it?

    Greetings everyone,
Just want to add my two cents and testify that this is a real problem regardless of what JVC or Apple want to disavow. My comrade and I shoot with two JVC GY-HD100U's with the HDV 720p30 codec. We purchased the Firestore DR-HD100's (God bless their soul - I don't care what all the reviewers say about this product - they need a visit from the iPod development team) with the cameras and use those for majority of jobs. No problems with TC breaks. However take that backup tape that was simultaneously recording with the Firestore and perform long captures from tape, we encounter stream breaks. Both cameras have had this problem out of the box. We don't have a dedicated deck since we figured most work will come off the Firestores so when we capture from tape its from the camera. However the Firestores are limited by battery life and for long continuous shoots we fall back on tape. Hence the frustration of TC breaks. Could someone from JVC or Apple take some initiative and find the flaw? Thanks.

  • Which Imports Faster HDV or AVCHD in FCE and iMovie?

I'm planning on getting my first HD camcorder and I'm leaning towards the HV-20 or HG-10. I'm leaning towards the HV-20 HDV. Tapes are cheap and a good archive medium and I'm leery of small hard drives being robust. Do AVCHD camcorders use similar drives as the iPod?
I've read AVCHD takes some time to import. Does HDV import faster to AIC?
Does FCE 4 import faster than iMovie 8 for both formats?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Kelvin

Import speed depends on your computer, but I think the the AVCHD and the HDV transcoding is about the same. It's all being done by QuickTime. AVCHD transfer gives you more options in terms of selecting clips and portions of clip, which is more difficult to do manually off tape. But, as you said, tape is cheap and a good archive medium.

  • Converting dvd to h.264 nero digital ipod

im using the new nero to convert my dvd's the correct ipod format, but everytime i convert the video the movie comes out blocky and blurry during certain scenes. i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this little problem?

Thanks for the reply, however, unless I am missing something there would be no advantage over simply retaining the original imported HDV files and avoiding the additional time taken to create the archive?
The H.264 route preserves the quality whilst dramatically reducing the file size and will probably be a more universally accepted format than HDV.
Luckily I can live without the metadata and timecode but it would be nice to be able to preserve it.
Naturally I have written details but as they are not integral with the video, there is always the strong possibility of them being lost after my demise.
I intend to keep the HDV tapes and camera of course, but I don't know how long the camera (even when unused) will survive.
My original Canon Video 8 camcorder, bought in 1992 packed in after 8 years leaving me with 25 unplayable tapes until last year, when by a minor miracle I was able to borrow a Video 8 tape deck.
Similarly, my first mini-DV camera purchased in 2000, packed in recently but luckily I have another DV camera together with my HDV one which can still play them.
From the research I have done it seem quite general that many cameras, even when little used, bite the dust after a decade, probably due to electronic deterioration/malfunction. They work perfectly but the next time you use them the transport mechanism refuses to function  even though there is obviously no mechanical wear.
