Hdv to web delivery

I have shot some footage with my sony Z1 and edited in fcp natively in hdv, and now I want to export the clips and post them on a site to download. I was wondering what kind of settings some of you were using to get good results, this compression thing is some kind of black art. I don't want to post the files as full fledged hd full-screen clips, but want them to be of a good quality. The clips are generally around 25 minutes each, and I would Ideally like to keep the file size to 300-350 mb per clip. I am not streaming, just offering as a download. I have a quad g5 for a fcs machine that will handle the compression. It does seem like going with h.264 will lead to some lengthy encoding times, but if that is what i neeed to do then that is that.

I would look for the threads in there that pertain to HDV downscaling to DVD or Mpeg2. There's a specific trick that worked for me:
http://www3.telus.net/bonsai/Step-by-Step.html
instead of choosing the mpeg2 compression in compressor, try a smaller size H.264 setting and see how it looks. It takes a long time to compress, but it's usually worth it.
also, I'd use the Frame controls and set everything to really high quality. It'll add hours onto your encodes, but they should come out much cleaner.

  • Best settings for 16:9 web deliveryI

    Hi all,
I would like to deliver 16:9 (small size) for web delivery directly out of FCP2. I have a bunch I made from DVD's through Handbreak which works and looks ok (see http://www.paparazzi-films.com/Site/Film-DVDs/Pages/Films-DVDs.html) but I now have material which is not in DVD format.
    setting advice is appreciated
    Michael

    You might also try H.264.
I just created a 15 minute 640 x 360 at 200K data rate size of 35 Meg using Compressor - that looks almost identical to the 800K data rate version.
The latest Flash 9 can play H.264 (as well as Quicktime Player) - so it is a platform agnostic solution.
This is a useful player for web display of H.264 using Flash 9.

  • 720 480 sequence with square pixels for web delivery only

i'm on fcp 5.0.4. i've done some text qt exports and all seems to be fine, just want to double-check here. i am editing a sequence of stills. i want my seq settings to be 720x480 square pixels (you can choose 'custom' for this but it will change back to ntsc dv 3:2) because i like the 1.5 (720x480) pixel aspect ratio.
usually when i do 720x480 projects i'm working with dv/non-square footage and when i export for web use i'll choose the 640x480 setting so that it displays correctly on computers.
so the question is: any foreseeable trouble with my using 720x480 with square pixels seq settings if i want to export a qt at those same specs, and it's NOT going to broadcast, just web delivery?
i'm also using compressor - jpeg as part of seq settings unless someone can tell me there's a better compressor to use. (yes i know tiffs would be better but am using jpegs here.)
    thanks.

Yes, there are foreseeable problems of applications assuming that your 720x480 video should have D1-sized pixels, as you've already experienced.
But once you finally end up with a 720x480 square pixel QuickTime movie that you are going to embed into a web page it should play properly.
Just make sure you host the video yourself so you can control its presentation. I bet if you upload it to Vimeo or YouTube those services would also reasonably assume that your video had non-square pixels.

  • When to resize 720x486 for QT web delivery?

    Hello,
    (*correction: disregard deinterlace question)
I cannot afford to purchase FCP to gain the new compressor engine - so I'm
re-rendering all my movies (in A.E.) to add a title and have a Copyright visible
    (QT uncompressed).
This work has to be done on a computer with Mac OS 9 (old software).
The movies will then be compressed in QT on another computer with QT 7.3.1 using
the H.264 codec for web delivery.
QUESTION: When should I resize (from 720x486 to 640x480).
In Adobe After Effects (OS 9), or over on the newer computer, as I compress with
    the H.264 Codec?
This might sound like a dumb question - but I'm trying to keep the quality as
high as possible - and was not sure if resizing one way, or another - might
    incur some artifacts or something.
Thank you for your help - from those who know.
    Luke Wonderly

Wow, thanks for more GOOD info!
    OK -
Yes, I knew about exporting, and QT ability to rescale in the page nicely,
but I have always been able to tell (on Independent artist - NOT studio videos)
when its been employed . . . . I need the very best display I can achieve.
(It also helps differentiate MY Work - from all the rest of the other junk thats
out there - and why I choose Quicktime.
These movies will also be the files which the customers will download, save and
keep on their own computer (to watch and practice with later) - so they need to
    keep the 640 physical size.
    Question:
Will the DV export codec AFFECT the rgb, yuv color space?
Movies were originally an older, QT 6.5.2 unsupported Avid Codec - so I had to open in OS 9, and (was cautioned by Ben Waggoner that IF compressing-use the
motion JPEG B - because it wouldn't effect the color space)
I export NOW uncompressed (then was for DVD delivery - on limited HD space).
If I am going to go through opening and re rendering 210 movies (to add titles
and copyright/logo) would it be the very best way to GO BACK to original (AVID
Codec) export in DV (highest quality) then import to A.E. - add titles, THEN
take it over to other computer and export H.264 to .mov?
    This is tough stuff, huh!
Or, since they are already in uncompressed state - (or was color spaced screwed
up then - when I exported uncompressed?) should I just import to A.E. do the
titles - and export to DV.
What is the HIGHEST quality, and safest way you guys think it should be done?
Man, looks like I really need some expert knowledge here -
Would you still be willing to offer any more help, or advice?
Thanks if you still got the patience!
    Luke

  • CS4: Best export settings for web delivery?

    Greetings, all!
I recently upgraded to working with HDV footage in CS4 from working with SD footage in Elements 3, and have been struggling a bit with getting the best quality export from CS4/AME for delivery over the web.
I'm most concerned with exporting a best quality master that I can then transcode to m4v, flv, etc.  So far, the best luck I've had is with a H.264 .mp4 export, but it's still not as clean as I'd like to see.  I've also read that exporting as a Quicktime animation provides excellent results, but I'm having issues with Quicktime on my new PC (error -43 file missing, for one thing) and I've read a bunch of posts here that advise staying away from QT whenever possible.  I'm working mostly with NTSC HDV 1440x1080 60i footage from a Canon XH-A1s, with some NTSC HD 1920x1080 30p and 24p footage from a Canon T2i thrown in sometimes.  I don't mind shrinking my export down to 1280x720, but for my master I really want the cleanest possible video.
Any tips would really be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Anybody have any tips???
Here are the specs I have been using so far.
    Format: H.264
    NTSC, 1280x720, 29.97 [fps], Progressive
    AAC, 128 [kbps], 44.1khz, Stero
VBR, 2 Pass, Target 6.00, Max 8.00 [mbps]
    Widescreen 16:9
    Profile: high
    Level: 5.1
What I get is a file that's about 250megs for a 5-minute video that looks pretty clean.  What I'm really looking for is more like a 2.5gig file that's super clean.  Back when I was shooting SD, I would export an .avi file as my master that would run about 1gig or so for a 5-minute file.  I'm looking for a similar workflow now that I'm working in HD.
    Any ideas?

  • Best way to export hdv to web???

I would like to export some clips from FCP HD to web for download. I hope to do some in 1080 and some in 720. I have never encoded HDV using FCP, compressor, or quicktime. I am mainly a PC guy with Premiere, so i am used to WMVHD.
Any help with settings for export would be great.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I think you might find this a thread to explore: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=635868
Once you choose a preset such as h.264, then double click on it in the batch monitor and you will see all the dimensions. Also, you can change the aspect ratio and overall dimensions by going to the custom setting.
I know it sounds vague...but check out that thread first and I think you'll see what I mean. I had trouble with aspect ratios and I'm checking now to see if that fix works...

  • Looking for best practices for web delivery of Captivate tutorials

I have a set of ~50 Adobe Captivate projects that are a mix of UI tour, business process overviews, and how-tos for configuring those processes. These "tutorials" as we call them, vary in length, ~1-3 minutes for the UI tours and overviews, and 4-10 minutes for the how-tos. We use narration, which we recorded in Audacity on Windows and imported as MP3s into Captivate. We are not using menus or interactivity, and are not integrated with an LMS.
The goal is to deliver these tutorials in-context in the UI of our web-based enterprise application. Our customers typically have several thousand users and when they kick of a new cycle of a business process, have hundreds of simultaneous users logged in, many of whom may view our tutorials when they first log in. This means optimal network performance is critical.
We initially output the Captivate projects to SWF format and used the standard HTML page as a means for a simple, progressive download. Users said it took too long to download before the tutorials could start playing. We tried converting the SWFs to FLV and delivered them via a streaming server. Even after optimizing the data rate and codec's compression settings, users reported that the volume of data being streamed to simultaneous users is too great and is adversely affecting their networks. As an example of the file sizes I'm talking, we have a five about are 6 MB for a SWF and 8.7 MB for an FLV.
Can anyone suggest strategies for optimizing delivery of the SWF files, the FLVs, or another format all together? I would like to stay with Captivate because of our investment in training and the fact it is included with our licenses for the Technical Communications 2 Suite. We are using Captivate 4.0.1 build 1658 on Windows XP, and Sorenson Squeeze 6 for compressing the FLVs with the On2 VP6 codec.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alan

The tutorial I mention in my example below is five minutes in length.

  • Compressing HDV for web distribution

My source material is 1080i HDV captured on Sony HD1000 (PAL) camera.
This I've imported into FCP to make a 3 min movie with additional music.
My aim - good quality movie with a small file size
My best result after countless attempts is 22MB, up to 800kbps, with 640 x 360 dimensions following suggestions (below) to get me into the general ballpark.
    http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/bkcompresshdv.html
This I did from Final Cut: File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion - the only thing I changed from suggestions in link was to increase data rate, 300 kbps produced poor results for me.
I've tried the different presets (and with numerous adjustments) in Compressor 3.5 but so far I've not managed satisfactory results. (From Download, QT7 Folder)
So wondered if anybody had any suggestions to produce good quality movies with a small file size from HDV 1080i source?

    Thanks for reply
    I edited in HDV 1080/50
I've tried sending directly to Compressor but when I submit any H.264 preset I get a 'failed' message.
I've tried sample editing with a Quicktime Movie of around 600MB in Compressor - it works with this - but with unsatisfactory results (so far)
As I said my best result was to bypass compressor and go with QuickTime Conversion.
I suppose by 'small' I'm wondering if 22MB/800kbps/640x360 (3 mins) is still quite large if, for eg, the movie is delivered to a client web site - I haven't got that far yet.
I didn't actually use the term 'good looking' but not surprisingly I'm concerned with retaining as much quality as possible with such file size reduction - not sure how else to define this. I'm relatively happy with the quality at 22MB - I've just done a series of test shots so far but in future will use a tripod, manual focus and limited or no transitions to hopefully aid the compression process.

  • Export from HDV to Web-Plausible Wide-Screen DVD Size?

I'd like to let some friends view some video I've shot in HDV (1440x1080i anamorphic wide-screen, camcorder is Sony HDR-FX1) and am editing with Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.4. I'd therefore like to export this video into a web-usable format, preferably at DVD resolution. Since this is wide-screen video, that works out to 853x480.
I'm at a lack to find an export format that can do that. Almost every pre-defined export format produces a 4:3 anamorphic print. When I use "Custom..." to explicitly ask for 853x480, it changes those settings to 848x477, but the final video comes out as 1131x477 (i.e., 16:9 x 4:3).
Anybody have any ideas how to do this? Thanks everybody!

Aha! The trick appears to be to set "Pixel Aspect Ratio" to "square" in the "Custom..." dialog. Apparently the fact that it was still set for anamorphic caused my 848x477 attempt come out to 1131x477.
By the way, I don't think HDV (or at least my HDR-FX1, which says it's HDV) has square pixels. Its images are 1440x1080 resolution, which is a 4:3 ratio, but it produces a 16:9 image, so it's got to be anamorphic.

  • Advice re HDV to Web HD

I have just got FCP and my task is to import HDV footage and then present the edited result to a web designer who has asked for the following:
1/The programme in HD 16:9 for downloading
2/A streamed trailer of the above, I presume also in 16:9 (Undownloadable)
I'm confused by the myriad of codecs available, can anyone suggest some codecs for input and output to achieve the best quality for the above tasks?
I premume that I'd have to submit the material burnt on a dvd, for the web designer to access it.
PS I'm mucking around at present with the Pro Res 422 codec for importing.

If I get what you're asking, I convert the whole mess to H.264/16x9, HD settings. Do it in compressor. As far as mucking, I'd also do the same - convert HDV to 422 ProRes timeline. Whatever you do, avoid trying to edit in HDV timeline. The web designer can do the tweeking on the aspect etc Compressor has settings for streaming.

  • Exporting HDV to web

I've got a video I made using footage of model airplanes from an Canon HDV camera and some graphics in AE that I made using source settings of Premiere sequence.  According to the "Match Sequence Settings" in the Export dialog I get:
    Source:  1440x1080 (1.3333), 29.97 fps, Upper, 48000 Hz, stereo
    Output: 1440x1080 (1.3333), 29.97 fps, Upper, Quality 50
... and it wants to save it as .mpeg.  I've exported using these stock settings and I can only view the video in VLC, but not Quicktime on my Mac.  No biggie.  The video looks good but there is some ghosting (double wings) on the edges of fast moving parts of the video, not as clean as the original inside Premiere.
So I tried exporting to .H264.  Got worse results there.  I get similar results when exporting to FLV/FL4.  Ghosting on edges on fast moving parts of video.  For example when a wing is spinning around I see two wings).  Slower looks better.  Is it HDV that's the issue, my Adobe Media Encoder or the settings of it?
My goal is to get as close to the original that I can get, just smaller, say width around 500 or so.  Which encoding technique and settings should I be using to get the best video, with sharp edges on the motion.  Also when do you export as 29.97 and when do you export as 30 fps?
    Thanks so much.

I believe that option is only available on the Win version correct?  I'm on a Mac.  I do have WMV conversion tools though and have tried converting the H264 and MPEG-2 outputted files but they still have the ghosting or double-imaging going on.

  • Web delivery inconsistencies /Closing browser windows

I have a huge piece being web-delivered. Sometimes everything
works perfectly, but occasionally we get a "Error reading segment
file" or "file is damaged or not an Authorware file" message. Is
there a solution for this problem?
Also, is there a function or a way to close a browser window
when you are ready to quit a web-based Authorware piece. If so,
does it work if your piece is playing "onTop" rather than "in
    place"?
    Thanks!

We have solved this by having the Authorware file call
another HTML file that has a javascript:window.close() in it in the
onLoad behavior (works for PC and Macintosh)
We also have our Authorware pieces onTop and it works great!
I have included the entire HTML code we are using. Just know,
that if this is the only Browser window open, that It will come up
with a window box something like ("..This windows is trying to
    close. Close the window YES/NO?")
    Hope this helps.

  • Crystal for Eclipse intermittent problem when viewing CR in .pdf over Web

*(I also have no idea why I'm not getting carriage returns/line feeds when I press the Enter key so that this message is readable.)*
My developer is telling me that the below error is causing one of our Crystal reports to not populate with data, and has asked if there is a way to turn on tracing.  This is an intermittent issue and we've not been able to determine the cause, nor can I find out where I can create a support ticket for it with SAP.  It doesn't do it all the time and it doesn't do it with the same users.  We're a large enterprise user (US Army).
Does anyone have any ideas?  I'm unfortunately not technical enough with Java or web delivery of Crystal.  The report runs fine nearly all the time and of course in the report designer it doesn't have this issue.  Our web developer is trying to find out why this is happening.
Does anyone have any ideas at all what the culprit might be?

    Hello, Phan Nguyen Binh;
I would like to confirm what products you are using now.
Are you running your reports on Crystal Reports Server XI (11.0) or Crystal Reports Server XI R2 (11.5)?
What Service Pack do you have installed on your Crystal Reports Server?
On your Development machine, what version of Visual Studio .NET are you using?
What is referenced under Help|About Visual Studio .NET on the Crystal Reports line?
On the server where you have installed the runtime. what version do you see for the following files? Right Click and go to Properties 'Version" tab for the full version number:
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine (11.5.3700.0)
    CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework (11.5.3300.0)
    CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.InfoStore (11.5.3300.0)
    CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc (11.5.3300.0)
    CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Controllers (11.5.3300.0)
    CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel (11.5.3300.0)
    CrystalDecisions.Shared (11.5.3700.0)
What .msi did you use to create your Click Once deployment?

  • Grading Broadcast vs. Web

Trying to find a work flow. When I grade a video, the final product differs greatly when viewed on a TV versus on website. That's to be expected. But it is a huge difference. Do people grade grade twice, once for broadcast and then once for web? I come from a photo/print world which I can utilize printer and monitor profiles which is great for photos. I can do my color in Photoshop, and then apply the profiles to the file depending on where it will go and the color will more or less be very similar to what I saw on my monitor. Is there anything similar for video? Most of my video stuff that I do is viewed on the web so I usually just grade stuff on my regular computer monitor. But sometimes I like to view my projects on my TV and soon I will have projects that will be broadcast and the files look like **** compared to my computer monitor. So then I have to grade them a second time for a broadcast signal. I got a Matrox Mini box hooked up to an HDMI monitor (just a regular HDMI TV but it works pretty good) so I can see what my color looks like. I'm hoping/looking to see if there is anything like a profile that can be applied to files so that I can grade once and then pick the final destination and have all the color being magically good. Anyone have any ideas?

If you're using COLOR, the operating assumption under which the application was developed was that its users were delivering content for Broadcast. It has a fixed "profile", to jump off with your vocabulary, (broadcasters don't use that term at all) specified by CCIR Recommendation 709 for High Definition and CCIR Rec601 for Standard Def (good old NTSC and PAL). There is an associated contrast index (called "gamma") associated with each, and if you are aware of the numbers, it is 2.2 (sometimes 2.4) for HD. Up to OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard), so-called "linear" video, RGB for GPU output over DVI connectors, and I'm assuming you're simply converting that into HDMI, is gamma 1.8. That's only one difference. COLOR also does all of its internal computations in RGB, while Final Cut operates in Y'CbCr, and its an imperfect conversion. We know that.
Snow Leopard attempted to "unify" its whole contrast standard to 2.2, and after a few versions, it finally seems like its starting to work out. Otherwise, this issue is very well known and has been explored, dissected and kvetched about for quite some time in innumerable forums, ever since Apple released this application into the wild with no explanations or recommendations. You know, other than what's in the manual.
I cannot say whether or not this particular factor is wholly or partly to blame for your material looking like "tiot", but it has also been discussed to death that both graphics displays and consumer TVs are wholly inadequate and inappropriate for use as critical judgement monitors, for a host of reasons. If one were to spend a lot of time looking at a lot of monitors in many facilities, it would be more apparent as to exactly how enormous this problem is.
Something you could otherwise possibly explore is the concept of a "LUT", which is a global "correction" usually employed to manage differences between output media -- they started coming into widespread use to migrate digital cinema values to film-printing gamut in the "DI" process, and is more similar to your "profile". COLOR has this facility -- you can develop a LUT inside the application. Its essentially a Primary Correction stored in a special location and can be loaded to affect the downstream preview of your work and then can either be "rendered in" to your final grade media or subtracted. It might be a way for you to achieve two versions simultaneously, although you would need to do some quantitative analysis (real numbers, as opposed to "pretty good") of how the final image is diverging between your broadcast and web delivery.
The other alternative is to render for Broadcast, and simply re-compress using a different gamma characteristic. This is an option in Compressor.
In OSX 5 (Leopard) (under Quicktime preferences) try to defeat ColorSync within the computer: you should find a checkbox which enables "Final Cut compatibility" with Quicktime. Snow Leopard does not have this option.

  • API - XML - Web service searching

I'm looking at Final Cut Server to integrate into our broadcast workflow and manage the whole process from creation to final file output within Final Cut Server. To effectively manage the workflow after content creation e.g. playout for broadcast and web delivery. We are going to need to interrogate the metadata catalogue, both live queries and through companion XML to the Compressor automation.
I have looked through the administration and user guides for any reference to the external querying or export of data but it doesn't cover this.
We are able to code custom interfaces and XML processing given an API or even applescript automation, but we need some developer documentation to proceed.
    Thanks,

    Simon,
Developers of product or content for Pro applications tend to congregate here:
    http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/pro-apps-dev
I think it is a good place for a question like yours. I am sure somebody here on the Final Cut Server forum will come up with an idea sooner or later, but the referenced page may bring results faster.
