Headache with 16:9 aspect ratio

Hi to all. hoping someone can help me with my problem. I am currently using iDVD to author my dvds from projects which have been created in Final cut express HD. The footage is 16:9, - the project is 16:9 and I am assuming the final output is 16:9, because the image looks correct on a widescreen tv. However the image is squeezed on a 4:3 set. It dosent letterbox which is what I really want it to do for those who will be watching the DVDs on a 4:3 set. It was suggested to me to use a program called "anamorphicizor". So I downloaded it and it worked , which is great. however the downside to it is that it adds another step in my allready time comsuming task of creating a finished DVD.
So, my question is this. If I move up to DVDstudio pro, will I be able to bypass this added step and be able to burn proper 16:9 projects which will also letterbox properly on a 4:3 set?. I believe the program costs about $450.00 Australian dollars, which is where I live. - Not chicken feed. Its obviously a much better program than iDVD so I am hoping that I will be able to do these things. If I can - then I will probably buy it. Thankyou in advance, Matty.

Yes, you can. One point is to Export your movies from FCE using File > Export > Quicktime movie, not Using QT compression.
The following is a list of steps to take in DVD SP (version 3 in my case)to set it up for 16:9 My experience is confined to PAL. Image sizes for NTSC are different.
On the display settings, for movies in widescreen (16:9), I set the display options in the following places:
1. DVD SP > Preferences > Encoding Set "Aspect Ratio" to 16:9
2. DVD SP > Preferences > Simulator Set "Aspect" to 16:9
3. In the Menu Inspector for each menu, Menu Tab, set "Aspect Ratio" to 16:9, and do this before setting the Menu Background image and its Overlay file (otherwise the Overlay file will not register accurately with the Menu Background image, at least that is the case with my outfit - DVD SP 3.0
4. Set each Video Track to 16:9 To do that, activate the Graphical Tab in the window at top left of the screen, select the track, and in the now-visible Track Inspector (General Tab) I set "Mode" to "16:9 (Letterbox)" because my TV is 4:3. (It is tempting to assume that if the TV is widescreen, you would set it to "16:9", but with my setting of "16:9 (Letterbox)" the DVD also displayed correctly on two widescreen TVs available to me (ie., it filled the whole screen). I don't know what display setting the owners had on their DVD players.
5. Finally, the display device (eg., TV) needs to be set to 16:9 (if the TV is physically 16:9), or to 4:3L if the TV is 4:3 (at least, that works for me).
So there is quite a lot of setting to do to get the correct display. I am surprised that Apple did not offer a single setting in Preferences to cover all this. Perhaps DVD SP 4 or 5 does.

  • Exporting Custom Resolution Quicktime Movie with Custom Pixel Aspect Ratio

I want to export some 16x9 sequences (and others) at different resolutions with different pixel aspect ratios.
I have tried exporting as a Quicktime movie, but I get a codec error (with my required H.264 & AAC audio).
I have tried exporting using Quicktime conversion, but there is nowhere to enter a custom pixel aspect ratio (if they added that as an option in “preserve aspect ratio”, that would be nice).
I have tried exporting using Compressor, but it doesn't seem to accept my setting of pixel aspect ratio (HDV 1080i 16:9)—at least when I play back the video it is not using wide pixels.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I would like to have arbitrary control of the pixel frame size on export as well as arbitrary control of the pixel aspect ratio. However, in this case I specificially want to export some video in a 4:3 pixel arrangement (such as 360x270) but have its display be 16:9 via non-square (i.e. 4:3) pixel aspect ratio.
In that sense, yes, I want to have something play back at 16:9, but at least some of my attempts to export video are squished at 4:3.
While it may be possible to adjust the display in the Quicktime Player, the AVC video syntax as specified by ISO and MPEG standards bodies allow the specification of the pixel aspect ratio (actually sample aspect ratio in the standard) within the bitstream, and when it is there, the latest versions of Quicktime will (from my experience) render the video with the correct aspect ratio.

  • Cropping with 4:3 aspect ratio

I have a 1920x1080 video that I want to crop to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
    I'm working with compressor 3.
When I set "crop original" to "4x3 1,33:1", I cannot manipulate the cropping. It is fixed to left=240, right=240, top=0 and bottom=0.
This results in 1440x1080 4x3, that's correct. But what I'd like to do is crop the top and bottom, too, while keeping the 4:3 aspect ratio.
    How do i do that?
When I set "crop original" to "custom" (I hope I translated that correctly), cropping left, top, right and bottom is possible. I manipulate the red rectangle in the preview window  and the cropping changes accordingly. Now how do I tell compressor to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio while manipulating/zooming with the red rectangle? I don't want to calculate the cropping, this is way too cumbersome.

To elaborate on my answer this morning (I was running late to a meeting):
Once you know the cropped height, you could let the app do some of the math by choosing Custom 4:3 in Dimensions and entering the new number. t will calculate the width for you.  Then in the Crop section you need to enter the difference between your source frame width (1920) and the width that Compressor calculated and then divide the difference by two to get the other padding value.
There is, unfortunately, no completely automatic way that I know of to do it.

  • Trouble with DVCProHD 16x9 aspect ratio in iDVD

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I've scoured the discussion boards and read thru the manuals and I just cannot figure out what the problem is or find the right answers. Okay...
I shot a short with the Panasonic HVX200 in 720p24PN. I cut the film in FCP 5.0.4 and would like to export it to make a DVD with iDVD 5.0.1. (Note: this is not the final version of the film I'm going to be making. I simply need to make a copy of my rough cut to give to my composer). I exported a Quicktime movie using the "current settings" and unchecked the "make movie self contained" box. I created a project in iDVD, dragged the QT movie in and burned it. When played on my computer and my DVD player displayed on my 32" HD widescreen TV, I get small bars on the right and left and the image is squeezed giving it a squashed from the sides picture. So my first question is, can iDVD 5 create a DVD from this source material and maintain the proper aspect ratio (16x9) or is the software too old? In other words, would I have to upgrade to iDVD 8? Or am I missing a step in the process that fixes this? Or is it a case of a plain QT movie not being the proper tool? Do I need to export it using QT Conversion or Compressor and make the aspect ratio custom? I have messed around with this and I don't seem to be getting the magic numbers here. I have a feeling I have the right applications, but I'm mixing and matching the wrong ones to achieve my goal. I know the people I'll be giving the rough cut to will view them on widescreen TV's so I'd love for it to play in full 16x9 for them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I didn't really feel it was a specific iDVD question since so much of the work begins and involves what you do in FCP first. I posted the question in that forum as well, but I'm just wondering if this is a common situation or rare. Doesn't seem like it would be a rare situation, but that's why I'm asking. Is what I'm trying to do too advanced for a "consumer" grade program like iDVD. And that's not meant as a slam on the program. Anyway, enough about me. What about me?

  • How to properly import footage with a different aspect ratio?

My main composition has the following specs:
    Dimensions: 1280x720
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels
    Frame Rate: 29.97
The footage I'm trying to import has these specs:
    Dimensions: 720x576
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV PAL (1.09)
    Frame Rate: 25
Right now, when I place the footage in the comp, the edges are fairly jagged. I assume there's some weird pixel aspect ratio thing that's going on, but just not sure how to get it right.

You have more than the aspect ratio problem going on.  There is a frame rate mismatch.  There is a very big problem of scale as well.
You can't expect to have as sharp an image as the original if you scale the layer to fit inside the comp side-to-side.  There is a third-party plugin called Instant HD from Red Giant software that can HELP -- it won't CURE the problem of too few pixels.
You also need to change the frame rate of the footage to 29.97.  AE's Time Warp can help with that.  If your need to have an extremely good-looking frame rate conversion is critical, you'd again have to get third-party frame rate conversion software like Magic Bullet or Twixtor.

  • Problem with 16:9 aspect ratio!

I recently shot a film in 16:9 using a Canon XL2, DV NTSC, 720x480, 23.98 fps. Now, after editing my whole project in FCP I am ready to make a DVD. So, I export it using compressor and when I go to view the video file it is all stretched sideways.
The ONLY way I have come up with of making it not look stretched is by compressing it in 4:3. This, of course, does not help me in making a DVD because the moment I put it in DVD pro it is stretched out again to be 16:9.
    This is baffling me.
Somebody please help me. I have a deadline to finish this film TOMORROW and I'm at a complete loss. I'm sure it's something very simple that I just haven't thought of yet, but I've spent hours on this problem and I'm tearing my hair out!

The resolution of the output file is definitely 720x480. Also, as far as it not being true Anamorphic 16:9, that was the first thing that crossed my mind. As I had remembered, the XL2 does indeed shoot in Anamorphic 16:9 rather than just letterboxing a 4:3 image.
One interesting thing that I noticed is that if I go into the Sequence settings and check the box that says anamorphic 16:9 then it will do the exact same thing in the canvas as it does when I export (it stretches it out).
Here are all of my settings, if that will help you folks out:
    Capture preset:
    Using DV for video input
    DCR-TRV900 using NTSC
    23.98 frames per second
DV - NTSC at Best quality
    24 bits per pixel
    720 by 480
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Aspect Ratio: NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601 / DV(720x480)
    Field Dominance: Lower (Even)
    Editing Timebase: 23.98
    Quicktime Video Settings:
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Clip settings:
    Format:
    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Data Rate: 3.6 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect: NTSC CCIR 601
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Alpha: None/Ignore
    Composite: Normal
I've tried multiple different settings in Compressor and no matter what I change it gives me the same unfavorable result. At this point, I'm not sure where the problem lies (Compressor? DVDSP? FCP?). I've done the same with DVDSP, switching settings around and nothing has helped.
Any more input you folks can give me will be very much appreciated. If you need any more specs from me I'm more than happy to provide them. Thanks!

  • How do I play my 16/9 QT file  with the right Aspect Ratio in QT?

My Quicktime file is 16/9 NTSC but when i play ti like in QT or on the web it is squeezed to 4/3.

When you export you need to adjust for the aspect ratio. For example, export 640x360...for that is 16:9. 640x480 is 4:3.

  • How can I properly export an image with corrected pixel aspect ratio?

Hi, I have a bunch of .png screenshots from old MS-DOS era software that I wish to convert to a 0,8 pixel aspect ratio to simulate the stretch from old CRT monitors.
I can easily preview it by enabling the pixel aspect ratio correction under the "View" menu, and it looks great. But if I try to "save as" the file as a .png or .gif, it looks blurry and horrible:
Any hints on how to do this?

Ok, thanks letting me know. Only last thought is a screen cap of image 2 (that I believe you want) saved to png.
There's a program called Greenshot that would use the Print screen key and allow you to marquee select and save the shot as a png file. Greenshot - a free and open source screenshot tool for productivity
That's for Windows, Cmd-Shift-4 on a Mac does the same thing.
I know it is a pain if you have a hundred of these, but I suppose if you are not in a big hurry you can get it all fixed up.

  • Media Encoder Greater that 7.0 does not recongnise SD footage with correct pixel aspect ratio

    Hello,
I logged this bug with Adobe last year but even through the latest releases the bug still remains and is a real issue for anyone editing in SD via Premiere Pro CC.
Effectvely when you create a PAL sequence within Premiere Pro CC using SD 720x576 pixels (4:3) you have 2 options to export, either Queue or Export. If you export the footage directly from the PP application to MPEG2 SD then the resulting files are perfect, however if you use the queue option and send it to Media Encoder then the resulting files are incorrectly interpreted and the resulting file looks squashed. I suspect the Media Encoder is defaulting to Square pixels and not 1.09xx which is the default for PAL SD 4:3
The issue only started on Media Encoder version 7.1 but I also checked 7.2 and this still has the bug.
I can't believe this is not effecting a lot of people and its taking so long to resolve. Adobe at the time acknowledged the issue but did not provide a time scale to fix.
If anyone has any words of wisdom I would love to hear from you. Maybe I am missing a simple workaround ?? Which could be to just export and NOT queue, however because I use the batch function a lot this is not always viable.
    thanks
    Steve

    Hi Tom,
thanks for the quick response. I'll attach two screenshots -- one from PP and one from AME, both showing the same test chart, but distorted in AME.
    Basically the given parameters are:
    Sequence is D1/DV PAL, 720x576, PAR 1.0940, framerate 25
Export settings are: MXF OP1a, resolution + framerate same as sequence, IMX 50 PAL.
If you still require the preset file, I'll send that separately.
    all the best

  • Help with 720x480 video aspect ratio problem

With the latest update to QuickTime 7.1.3 I've noticed that video captured with FCP 5.1.2 presets, namely DV NTSC 48 kHz, video will be captured and QuickTime will say the frame size is 720x480, but when you view the video in QuickTime it looks more like 640x480. The point is that when you edit this in FCP and view on an external monitor or export to DVD for that mater, it looks like the pixels don’t match up. This is the case on 5 machines and I’ve attached a link to download a still frame. Please advise. It also should be noted that this problem is most noticeable in b&w and sepia. http://www.livingcinema.net/upload/pixel_problem.jpg.zip

The point is that when you edit this in FCP and view on an external monitor or export to DVD for that mater, it looks like the pixels don’t match up.
Not sure what you are referring to here by "don't match up." Basically, what you describe is normal. Your editor is displaying the rectangular pixel reprsentation of video using square pixels which makes its display look wider than "normal." QT, on the other hand, displays the video in square pixels which representats the way your video should look on a rectangular pixel device like a TV.
This is the case on 5 machines and I’ve attached a link to download a still frame.
Looks normal to me for a video to be played on TV. If your edited output is not destined to be viewed on a rectangular pixel device, then set explicit screen dimensions as part of your output conversion routine if other than DV. As you noted in your question, the QT player is adaptive. So when it recognizes the DV "720 x 480 (640 x 480)" parameters, will correctly display the file automatically.

  • How can I import .mov footage with original pixel aspect ratio?

So the footage is 720x480 Square Pixels (1.0), 29.97 fps, progressive .mov but when I import it into Premiere Pro, they come up compressed as D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) automatically. When I try to Interpret Footage, it simply adds black bars. Why can't it just import correctly? When I preview the original footage, it plays back correctly but the preview inside Premiere Pro shows the distorted version... Please and thank you!!!

The suggestion about "new item" above was short. Here's the "full" version. In the Project Panel, go to the lower right corner ... click on the "New Item" Icon ... as shown here:
The first item on the pop-up menu that will appear should be "Sequence" ... click on it and just say ok at the next screen without even reading it. It's irrelevant, really.
Then going back to your project panel (we assume you've already imported your footage into it) click & drag a clip from the proj. panel to the timeline, or move one from the "Source monitor" to the timeline ... you should get a pop-up asking if you want the timeline changed to your footage, or your footage changed to the timeline. Take the timeline/sequence settings changed to match footage, and go.
That SHOULD take care of the problem in the vast majority of cases. It is such a simple fix, and so often the easiest and "correctist", that it's worth a try. Navigating the choices of setting up sequences is best left for those people who say, study GPU algorithms for a couple hours before going to bed for the sheer exhilaration of it ... unless, of course, PrPro actuall does a face-plant with your footage. But it mostly works good at it ... once you just let it ... so you might give that a try, takes what ... 20 seconds to see if it works?

  • Help with Video Effect (Aspect Ratio)

    I have a 4:3 Video, but I don't want to stetch it to fit 16:9 widescreen;
How do I achieve this effect?
Sorry I'm a bit new to Premier Pro but would like if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Welcome to the Forum.
Create a 16:9 sequence.  Stack duplicate copies of your 4:3 clip on tracks 1 and 2.  Use the Motion>Scale effect to enlarge the copy in track 1 to fill the frame and then give it a 30% to 50% Gaussian blur.

  • Aspect ratio of iPad mirror is not 4:3 when mirrored with Apple TV

Hi Everyone - I have just bought an Apple TV 3 and installed the device yesterday. I am using an LG HDTV and an iPad3. Everything works fine except one thing: When I mirror my iPad in landscape on the TV it appears with a wrong aspect ratio. This means I am NOT seeing a 4:3 picture of my iPad content on the screen, it rather looks like a 1:1 ratio. So the picture is "pressed together" from the left and the right. Any ideas how to solve the problem?
Before you answer - I am not talking about the black bars that appear when you mirror the 4:3 iPad on a 16:9 TV screen. This is not my problem and I know that black bars will appear eventually. I just do not get the proper aspect ratio of the iPad 4:3 on the TV screen - it rather appears as a square on the screen. This is only when I select mirroring - using airplay to see movies, youtube etc work perfectly fine.
Thanks very much for the help.

I have now reset my TV but unfortunately the problem remains. I also do not have the possibility to set the horizontal / vertical stretch of the TV when the input signal is via HDMI - so also no option.
I could actually live with the wrong ratio presentation when mirroring the iPad.
What I find really annoying is that my photos do not scale properly. When I start a slideshow on Aple TV from the iPad, the photos, which have been taken in a 2:3 aspect ratio, do not come up properly on the TV screen. They are pressed together from the sides, so people are too thin (well - some may like it but that is a different topic ).
Apple TV works totally fine with all other applications, ie YouTube videos. These are presented perfectly! This is why I think it has something to do with how photos are sent to Apple TV - this must be different from videos and maybe somewhere there is the reason.
If you have any other ideas I would appreciate your help. Thanks
