Header Damages Can't be Repaired

I keep seeing log reports during Disk Utilities or DiskWarrior repairs saying that PrintOption.rsrc and Localized.rsrc have header damages that cannot be repaired. First, what's this mean to me? Second, is there another way to eliminate the problem: delete some unimportant file that will regenerate once I attempt to use the printer or ???

The files in question are system resource related ones, and as such, the easiest
approach if a repair is not happening and you have no third-party utility capable
of the repair, is to do an Archive & Install, then upgrade the System using the
Combo upgrade file; and then apply the latest Security Updates, Java, QuickTime,
and other bits you may be accustomed to using if they were added to the System.
{The resource file .rsrc has underpinnings in the root OS X, data and resource files.}
Your Applications folder and other drive contents should remain intact; and in order
to save your user account settings and move them into the new System the A&I
creates, there is a checkbox to be sure these user preferences, etc, are transferred.
There may be a better way; not sure if a different third party disk utility can fix
damaged system resource files in OS X. Some of the .rsrc may be used to
access and store system themes, so that may explain a visual issue in the
damaged headers as mentioned earlier. These files, in other circumstances,
can be edited by someone familiar with their purpose and content. Some of
them probably should not be edited if the path to fix other corruptions or un-
determined damages elsewhere is best covered by the blanket Archive/Install.
Perhaps someone with a better grasp of this resources file damage issue
may see this thread and offer another perspective. Some people would
suggest making a full content clone of the computer's hard disk drive and
then have that (bootable clone copy) to fall back on should some other
course of action fail to be viable. That would save everything, if done to a
correct level and tested before proceeding further with a system repair.
The Archive and Install process isn't all that complex; but adding the new
parts (and repairing disk permissions between update/upgrade steps) is
a path that will take some time and a level of attention to detail. If you get
the Combo update file for the system, and install that after the A&I, that
would make it easier to get correct update files from the Software Update
utility online. After several items are installed, the Software Update can
find more applicable updates. There are some it may not find, so you are
going to have to check for Flash player, & other stuff which may be needed.
Not sure if TechTool Pro 4 (or other) can fix damaged resource files; there
are some third party disk utilities that an do more than rebuild directories
or attempt to fix low-level corruption on a disk. A standard home-fix to an
odd issue such as you've experienced, would be to do the Archive & Install
and then update. The old system folder then gets named "previous" so it
can serve as a reference; some items may be possibly moved from it, but
the former system cannot boot the computer and should be removed at
some date when it appears to be no longer needed. (And to gain the space
on the hard disk drive otherwise wasted should it remain.)
Be sure there is an adequate amount of unused hard disk drive space in
the computer's hard disk drive before attempting to perform an A&H. This
is where a clone also comes in handy; to facilitate going ahead with repairs.
Well, I'm looking to find some food...
Good luck & happy computing!

diskwarrior, in the past I may have deleted files

    Can it be fixed?

    Hi h,
First, it is possible that the HD has mechanical issues that SMART cannot detect, and which could in turn cause software/OS issues. If that's the case, it's time for a new HD, but first I would install a fresh OS (see below).
in the past I may have deleted files that have caused this instability. Could it?
Deleting any one of thousands of OS files can wreak all kinds of havoc, most of it unpredictable. Some have names that you would never consider to be part of the OS, like "unknown."
    Can it be fixed?
Odds are, if DW can't do, no. But I would still at least try Repair Disk while booted from your install disc. It's free and will take only a few minutes (though I wouldn't put much hope in it, no reason not to try).
If no success, in your situation, I would back up my data files, erase/zero the HD, and install a new squeaky clean OS. Then I would have confidence that things should be back to normal, but I'd still run Repair Disk regularly for a few weeks to make sure nothing becomes corrupted again.

  • How do I backup to my external hd on 10.6.8 if the disk is damaged and can't be repaired?

Hi! So, I'll get straight to the point. I'm running 10.6.8 on my mac, which is about 5 years old. I attempted to install OSX Mavericks last night, so I could update some of my software. Anyways, the computer restarts and opens up the installer for OSX Mavericks, but after about a minute of installing, it shows that the Mavericks install failed. The upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.
Could someone tell me (step by step) how to back up all of my data, erase the disk, and install again? I have an external HD by the way.
    Help would be much appreciated!

So, essentially you're saying that I need to download one of these programs to my external hd. But, how do I boot it from my mac if I can't get past the installation screen of Mavericks? I'm running on my other mac right now, if that helps. I've tried to use disk utility to repair, but it's greyed out. I honestly just want to retrieve all of my data, wipe the drive, and then install a new one. I just want to know how to do that.

  • The file is damaged and it can not be repaired (PDF Printing in Z-program)

I am opening this thread on behalf of my colleague Merja regarding a problem while trying to print using the Integrated ITS 6.40.
The problem happens when using webgui directly. Support Package level is 21 and kernel 640 patch 196. Note 771683 regarding printer with access
method 'F' and device type 'PDF1' is already in place. 'Output immediately' opens the preview. Error still exists when using "print preview" button.
The issue occurs when trying to review the Employment Contract within the portal UI. The actual print is finished correctly but the "Print Review" function returns HTTP 500 error, "The file is damaged and it can not be repaired".
When we perform the same activity in system R/3 within the transaction SE38, with our Z-program everything works correctly and no problems occur.
Could you please help solving this issue?
    Thanks and regards,
    Merja

Not sure if the flollowing will be of use, but worth a try?…
Try changing the .ai to .eps or .pdf to see if anything happens to see if it makes a difference to importing or exporting as a pdf?
If you have Indesign, try importing the file into Indesign then saving that file as a pdf or/and export as a Indesign eps file.
Sorry I cannot be of any more assistance.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks failed - disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

    Hello,
I'm afraid the answer is exactly what I don't want.  But here is my situation.
I've been trying to download and install Mavericks - I was running Snow Leopard.  My system was working fine - I wanted to upgrade so that I could run a game on it - but it required Mavericks.
Finally, it looked like Mavericks was installing.  Once I restarted my computer, I got the following message:
"Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer (there's a big scary yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it below this). The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
Every time I restart, I get the same message, I can't back up my data and erase my disk like it wants me to; it won't let me. I can't get back to my normal computer. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it doesn't work - it just keeps restarting over and over again. If my computer is really this determined to not let me have Mavericks, fine, but I at least want my old computer back. As it is now, I can't do anything on it besides restart it.
If I could just get to Finder, I could save some files and just reformat it - if the hard disk can be repaired.  Even if it can't, I just need my documents.  Here is the Installer Log:

Thank you for any help you can give me.

You are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu  you will have access to Disk Utility.
From  here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key.  Either way, that takes a few minutes.

  • Failed install of OSX Mavericks and my iMac is now saying the Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired! Help!

I need help getting my iMac working again.
Last night I tried to install OSX Mavericks, my previous/current OS is 10.6.8
After restarting the Mavericks install screen appears and then stops and give me this error message:
    "Install Failed
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
The OS x upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Mackintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data , erase your disk and try installing again.
Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
I tried restarting numerous time but to no avail.
    Please help!

Have you got back to restore from if all else fails?
Try booting from the grey restore disk that came with the Mac: disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. Hopefully it'll boot, albeit slowly. At the first screen select your language and from the menu bar of the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD>Repair Disk. Hopefully DU wil repair the errors. Click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try to restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired

    Hi,
The other day i decided to purchase and download Mac OS X Lion off from the AppStore for my iMac 21"inch, however after i sucsessfully downloaded the OS it began to Installing, then when it passes 5 minutes of installing the window displays a word saying "Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired" I AM PANICKING, it told me to restart the iMac so i follow the instruction then when i do restart the my iMac the apple logo goes flashing crazy with a some sort of "Your hard disk is screwed" sign. What should i do?! im thinking of re-installing the mac os x snow leopard again. But i dont no im going crazy this is a $1000 or more computer that im dealing here with . PLEASE IF SOMEBODY HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM LETS FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS! :'(

Hei guys thanks for the fast replies and tips, it finally worked! i decided to clean everything up by wiping all of my data which means 'start fresh' and re-install OS X Leopard. yes the OS X Lion works superb on my iMac, guess this is not an HDD failure or 'physic' damage. So much thanks!
NOTE: Oh for those of you who are having this same problem as i do, keep in mind dont panic to much and act crazy with your Apple imac's or macbook's, ease up and do as i say:
when it tells you,  "Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired" do as it say, restart your device, once it is restarted quickly insert your Snow Leopard Installation Disc and it will take you to the 'installation screen' once your there you will see 'utility' up in the bar click that and click disc utility, once there click on your Macintosh HD and click on 'Verify Disc' & 'Repair Disk'. Then finally, restart your device again, If it runs smoothly then re-install OS X Lion off from the App Store (Again, and yes im not joking). If it doesnt run smoothly, re-install your Snow Leopard OS then install OS X Lion from the App Store.
Cheers everybody! Thanks for the fast and very Helpful replies!

  • I tried to instal lion but my iMac says "install fail because hard drive is damaged and can't be repaired" and my only option is to restart and it immediately tries to download it again, won't let me back to any other screen.  Is there anything I can do?

I am trying to install Lion and I keep getting a fail message that says "Mac OS X could not be installed because the disk Hard Drive is damaged and can't be repaired". It only gives me the option to restart to try again but fails every time, an no other option.   Is there anything I can do?

I'll guess that you're upgrading from Snow Leopard? You should be able to start using your original install dvd by inserting the disc and restarting while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility from your install disc  and try to repair the drive. Then try the upgrade again.

  • Mavericks install failed, says disk is damaged and can't be repaired. Help.

My install failed early in the setup process, and said that my HD is damaged and can't be repaired.  It reboots in install mode, I go to disk utility, and can't run repair.  I've tried to boot to safe mode, but the progress bar goes about a third of the way and it just powers off, so no way to get in to backup or do anything on this machine.  My time machine backup is old, but mostly I just have music that I can redownload from iTunes or re-rip from cd, so not worried about data loss.  So do I reformat?  How would I get an OS on there again, since there would be no way to boot up or get an OS Download onto that machine?  This is the first time I miss the old cd/dvd disk distribution.   I'm stumped, any help and guidance is appreciated.  It's a MacBook Pro if that matters.

You should always have a backup of your HD no matter what.
You are saying you ran  the Disk Utility from the installer disk- Repair Disk and it failed?
Disk Warrior a lot of times can repair what Disk Utility can not.
Check the SMART status of your drive will in DiskUtility

  • When installing mountain lion on my computer, why does it say "OSX Mountain Lion couldn't be installed, because the disk \ is damaged and can't be repaired."

I'm unable install mountain lion on my computer. Every time it says "OSX Mountain Lion couldn't be installed, because the disk \ is damaged and can't be repaired. Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again." So I press the only button listed as an option, it restarts, and the same screen comes up again. I can't make mountain lion go away...I've tried many times. What is wrong with my computer? It's stuck like this and I can't even get snow leopard back on there if I wanted to because I can't get away from the same screen. Please help : (

Insert your OS installer disk in the optical drive. Power the Mac down by holding down the power button. Then power back up and hold down the 'c' key so the MBP boots to the installer disk. From Disk Utility you should do a Repair Disk. If DU successfully repairs the disk quit the installer and reboot your Mac. You should update to 10.6.8 prior to upgrading to ML.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then do your ML upgrade install.

  • The OSX upgrade couldn't be started because the disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

I'm getting the above error message after trying many different "fixes" described on message boards.  Here's the issue: I have a Macbook Pro that developed a problem with an endless boot cycle.  The solution ended up being to wipe the drive using Disk Utility.  I then reinstalled OSX from a Snow Leopard disk, and the computer appeared to be working normally.  Then, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from the App Store, I get this message when the computer tries to reboot and install the OS.  I have tried verifying and repairing the disk, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, resetting the SMC...but always I get the following error message:
    Install Failed
OSX could not be installed on your computer
The OSX upgrade couldn't be started because the dis Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired
Curious if anyone has experienced this problem or has a possible fix.  Thanks for your help

I did not verify/repair from Snow Leopard...simply reinstalled then attempted to download/install Mavericks from the App Store.  Having seen this suggestion, I've now rebooted into recovery mode, and when I try to verify/repair, it aborts both processes and I get the respective errors:  "The volume couldnot be verified completely" and "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

  • File is damaged and can't be repaired error

I was at the IRS forms page, downloaded and printed some forms, but when I tried to download and print the instruction and tax chart pages, I began getting 'file is damaged and can't be repaired' error. I upgraded my free Reader to version 9, rebooted the computer, and tried again with the same results. I also deleted my internet (Windows XP) history and temp files (but not the cookies), and that didn't help either. I contacted live help from IRS but agent said he was having no problem getting the files to show up so it's something to do with my system. I tried downloading the files to my computer, but again when I tried to open them, got the same error. What could be wrong?
I did have a window pop up from Adobe during the last print out stating that that page was not going to display properly, but in fact it did, and the very next .pdf file and every one since then has now given an error message so I'm unable to get any more of the .pdf files I need.
Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated...

I think I resolved the problem....I had version 5 installed prior to getting the update of version 9 without realizing that both being installed at the same time would interfere with each other. I had assumed the new version would 'overwrite' the old one. I uninstalled everything (both versions) and saw that version 9 indicated AIR in the Add-Remove Programs list. When I rebooted after uninstalling both, I opened the folder on my desktop that version 9 put in there, opened another folder called 'Reader' and installed ONLY the version 9 which now shows in Add-Remove Programs as Adobe Reader 9 instead of AIR and rebooted again. Went back to the IRS site, and am now printing just fine the documents I needed.
I am going to assume that the older version 5 was not able to view and print some of the documents there since the IRS site probably uses updated versions and that it was the source of my problem since even with the newer version 9, I was experiencing the same problem, and not the AIR file I noticed in Add-Remove Programs.
Although no one was responding to me (not your fault since it was only a short time ago that I posted this problem), I am posting my results so anyone else with this problem will know how I resolved it.

What installed iPhoto there in the first place?  Was it the same version of iPhoto that came with the Mac?  Was iLife added at a later time from a Mac Box Set?   You can selectively install iPhoto, and then apply the appropriate iLife update without taking it to the shop, after removing the application, or recover it from your backup.
