Headless xServe G5 ethernet ports broken?

Hi there,
after an attached DSL router imploded, the server stopped being seen on the network. It cannot be accessed via terminal, cannot be pinged, etc.
However, it seems to boot normally in various modes (from DVD, harddisk, target disk). In target disk mode I can access the harddrives and the DVD drive. I can even boot from them. The lights don't seem to indicate any fault. Since it's headless, I'm just not sure what works and what doesn't.
So it looks like the ethernet ports don't work anymore. I tried setting up TCP/IP over Firewire but that doesn't work either.
I sent it to support and the only thing they came up with is exchanging the mother board for € 1.400,-- i.e. not really worth it. They said they tried a PCI Ethernet card and that didn't work either.
Before I sell its parts on ebay: is there anything else I can try?
I really appreciate any help.
-chris.

Yeah, the lightning (or such) hypothesis has something for it.
Well, I did exchange the NVRAM battery, reset the PMU, reset NVRAM, started from harddisc 10.3 and 10.5, from DVD 10.3 and 10.5 - nothing, nothing at all.
I started the xServe in diagnostic mode and ran diagnostic tools from my laptop,s terminal - nothing.
I am about to give up. If this **** thing only had a graphics card. But I also not really willing to hunt down a hopefully functioning card for 200 Euros just to find out it's really the mainboard.

  • Is my right Ethernet Port Broken?

    05Apr2014
I bought a new Mac Pro with all the features.  There are two Ethernet ports on the bottom of the periferal ports.
I am able to connect with an Airport Extreme (Generation 3) wiht the left port.  The connection does not work on the right ethernet port.
Is the right ethernet port broken?  I only had the computer for a few weeks.
Also, I can not see the Airport Extreme (Gen 3, March 2009) when I use the Airport Utility.   Is that model of Airport Extreme compatible wiht the new late 2013 Mac Pros?
I prior to getting the new Mac Pro, I had a 2007 Imac connected to a mac laptop.   I had both computers connected to the Airport Extreme using ethernet cables.
Now  I use the Imac connected wirelessly to the Airport Extreme and the same laptop plus the mac pro are connected using ethernet cable.  However, I can connect the Imac and laptop like before, but I can not connect any computer wiht the Mac Pro.
I also installed McAfee Internet Security sotware which maybe causing my connection problems.
I configured the network years ago and forgot how to connect computers together.
Does the right side ethernet port need to be repaired?   Is the Airport Uthility software compataible with new Mac Pro?
I'd appreciate any help wth these issues.

    RE:  The two ethernet ports:
I only need one port.  It is connected to an Airport Extreme (which has a laptop connected with an ethernet cable).
The port on the right is closer to the Airport Extreme, but it does not work.   This is meerly a frustration that a port to a brand new machine (Mac Pro).
I get the internet.  I have a cable modem connected via ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme.    I have a Imac connected by WYFI and the laptop and Mac Pro conneced to two of the ethernet ports of the Airport Extreme.
My next goal is to network the three computers, which I used to be able to do.  I have a Airport Dock, connected to a DVD player and two Tivo boxes.  I lost  the connctivity of the Airport Dock, so my Tivoes are not working right.
Yesterday was a frustrating  day!  I am certainly not a trained network manager.   I don't know what I did to loose the connections and I compleltly forgotten how to get the connectivity back.
Thank you for your help!   I want my brand new Mac Pro to work perfectly!   I forgot how furstraiting it was years ago to confiigure computers.

  • Ethernet port broken?

I came home today to find my Powermac G5 disconnected from the internet. My first reaction was to try another computer, which worked fine (note, it was on the same router however the computer I was using was wireless). I then went to another computer in the house, this one wired and it worked fine.
Next, I enabled the wireless card in my G5 and it worked fine. I finally tried another ethernet cable and that failed too.
In network preferences it is showing it has an ip address but it is unable to connect to the internet. How can I tell if my port is broken?

You can try filling in the DHCP client ID field in the TCP/IP configuration window with the address of the DHCP server, usually the same as your router. It usually is not required because the computer should broadcast a request for service that the DHCP server should answer. However, it never hurts to be specific about things, so try filling in that field, then click the renew DHCP lease button.
Also try setting the TCP/IP configurations using the Manual method. Select an IP outside of the range of IPs served by your DHCP server. Most consumer routers only serve the lower 100 (and usually less) IPs from the routers base IP. So if your router is at 192.168.1.1 then choose an IP of 192.168.1.101 and it shouldn't interfere with the DHCP assignments. Use the same subnet mask, usually 255.255.255.0 and fill in the Router IP and your DNS Servers IP manually. If you are then able to make the connection to your LAN or the Internet, then the Ethernet port is working fine and tracking down the problem may be a bit more difficult.
If it does connect using manual, you could of course just leave it set that way. I have a home network with about 12 computers on the same LAN and all but 2 are configured manually. The two laptops use DHCP so that they are easily used between the home and office networks without having to reconfigure them.
If you can't get the Ethernet port to work, you can install an Ethernet card to replace the lost functionality of the built in port. There are plenty of manufacturers to choose from. You can probably do a search here to find some suggestion for manufacturers to use.
    Hope that helps a bit.

  • Ethernet port broken (pins twisted)

My Ethernet port is shot - is there a device, possibly via USB through which I might connect the internet ethernet wire?? I have a Toshiba Satellite e205 s1904 and was thinking about the Trendnet TU2-ET100 high speed USB network adapter.  thanks in advance for any assistance/feedback - p.s.  wireless works fine.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I haven't used such a device personally, but I do know they work well. However, I don't have a recommendation of a particular adaptor.

  • Slow networking, programs wont open, broken ethernet port - so many probs!

WE've got some 3 year old power macs in the office - 2 x g5's and one g4. there are a number of problems:
    1) the g4 ethernet port has broken - i've been quoted £500 to get it fixed (thoughi may find it cheaper elsewhere) - but basically i need a cheaper option. someone tripped over the wire and completely dislodged the bit where it plugs in. if anyone knows of an alternative that would be great. tried an ethernet/usb adaptor but there werent any drivers to make it work.
    2) the second problem is the networking - one of the g5's connects to the internet fine but when i try to network to or from it with any computer inc my laptop it is so slow - what normally takes 20 seconds to transfer takes 3 hours with this one. i have no idea why it's suddenly started doing this - sometimes it just freezes and i have to restart all the computers.
    3) photoshop wont open on one computer - it just says 'unexpectedly quit - do you want to send a bug report' - but it never even opens!
    4) quark wont open on some user accounts - it says 'it wont open on a locked volume' - but i havent locked anything!

Belkin has stated they intend to release new drivers for the F5D5005 that will support 10.4x. However, as of the present they have not done so. Given that Belkin is taking longer then I would expect them to take, and that the card has been backordered for sometime, I would agree that one of the other compatible gigabit cards is a better choice at this time.
It's funny that you bring this up, as I was just researching a new gigabit card for one of our G4 Quicksilver servers after an old Asante card finally died after many years of abuse (It's been in about a dozen machines at one time or another).
I'm looking at the Netgear, or Hawking, both work natively under 10.4, though the Hawking has had reports of problems with iPv6, though I would think the problem would include the Netgear as they both use the same realtek chips. However as iPv6 is not an issue with our network, I can just disable iPv6 support on the server.

  • Xserve ethernet ports shows connected though no physical connection

    Hi all...
We have a very strange issue in the 3 latest xserves (with Nehalem processors)that is purchsed couple of days back. The issue is, in the Network, System preference, both the ethernet ports shows green and displays as "Connected" even though there is no physical connectivity. This active state of the eth ports is visible only in the network system preference and the port state shows as inactive if we check through CLI and the server monitor. Both the ports functions normally except for these wrong info in the system preference.
Have anyone faced any issue with the latest Nehalem processor Xserves or is this be a bug in the OS X. The installed OS version is 10.5.7 and the firmware is up to date.
    Please help !!

Call Apple Support for assistance; this looks to be a nasty error with multiple new Xserve boxes and given these are likely covered under their initial warranty, which implies there's something seriously weird with 10.5.6 or 10.5.7, or with the Xserve early 2009 boxes, or firmware, or with what the configuration tools allow.
It appears that [threadID=2021235|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021235] and [threadID=2021817|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021817&tst art=0] are the same case?

  • Solutions for Broken Ethernet Port

The ethernet connector is broken and I'm unable to connect to the ethernet using an ethernet cable. Is there any solution other than replacing the whole motherboard??
I can't set up any internet connectivity without using the ethernet port...or can I?

With a wireless modem and/or router and an original AirPort Card, you could enjoy wireless internet.
It would be easier and cheaper than replacing the logic board.
    The iBook is AirPort-ready.
Instructions for installing the card can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

The AirPort Extreme Card is NOT compatible with an iBook G3, and can further damage the logic board if it is installed.
    Good luck.

  • XServe G5 - hardware indicates both ethernet ports are working; software only sees one

    XServe G5
System Profiler only sees one ethernet port: en0
Server Monitor (Tiger) also only sees en0
But when cables are plugged into both ports, both green link lights come on, and both show blue activity lights.
Whichever switch (Cisco catalyst 2960) is connected to en0 (lower port) works fine; whichever is connected to the second (upper) port does not actually deliver any data to computers attached to that switch, they cannot see the server even though the switch indicates that something (the server) is attached to it.
I know the bottom ethernet port has to be connected first, and then the upper, and I did that. I have restarted the server.
Only the bottom port has ever been used on this server and I'm trying to use the upper one for the first time, do I need to configure it somehow? The manual is extremely minimal and doesn't mention anything about needing to manually configure it.
    Thanks.

To start with the basics did you go into System Preferences > Networking and activate and assign a static IP to the second interface or did you do some other set-up?

  • Broken ethernet port

I purchased a Office jet Pro L7680 about 7 months ago. All of the sudden ethernet port stopped working, when it connected to my router no light on the port, no activity. Tried different router port, connect with crossover directly to PC but with still no activity or ethernet connection light. It appears the ethernet port on the printer is damaged because anything plugged into my router ports all work. How do I replace the ethernet port under warranty?

Here is how to contact HP.

  • How to specify one ethernet port for network home directories (other for normal filesharing)?

So I'm trying to get Home Directories up and running on a 10.6.8 Xserve (waiting until I get my NFS sharepoints migrated to a Linux server [for other reasons] before moving up to 10.7 Server). But posting here since that will be happening in the next few weeks, and it might be applicable now (so I can at least get that resolved ahead of time).
I have a different DNS entry for each ethernet port: server.office.domain.com at 192.168.0.11 for the first, and homes.services.internal at 192.168.0.10 for the second. DNS lookups for both resolve correctly (as does the reverse lookup).
If I use the Server Admin to pick a sharepoint as an automount for Home Directories, everything is fine, but it picks the server.office.domain.com hostname. Picking that works just fine, but that is also the connection that feeds the filesharing. I'd prefer to split that home directory traffic out onto the second ethernet port. So I tried just duplicating the initial connection (since it can't be edited directly in Workgroup Manager) and changing the hostname to the internal one, but I get an error when attempting to log in (the client login screen gives a very helpful "Couldn't login because of an error" error message) and don't see anything in the server logs.
The client machine shows the following line:
    Code:
    10/20/12 5:27:42.688 PM authorizationhost: ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dirPath:username:] |
         PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication( url=afp://homes.services.internal/Users,
         homedir=/Network/Servers/homes.services.internal/Volumes/HomeDirectories/Users/ user123, name=user123 ) returned 45
(added line breaks so it didn't extend off the page)
So it looks like this is failing because the automount isn't in place, but I'm not sure how to work that out either (i.e. how do I add that making sure it uses the internal hostname?).
Any suggestions on getting this to work?
I realize one solution is just to LACP the two ports, but that is a different ball of wax (I may do that later if I get a 4 port ethernet card and performance limitations demand it).

A possible solution might be this.
On ADSLBOX and CABLEBOX configure different subnets for the LAN, e.g.
    ADSLBOX:    192.168.1.0/24
    CABLEBOX: 192.168.2.0/24
The MEDIABOX gets these static IPs:
    ADSL-LAN: 192.168.1.2
    CABLE-LAN: 192.168.2.2
On the MEDIABOX, configure the two network interfaces using two routing tables.
    The ADSL-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip route add default via 192.168.1.1 table 1
    The CABLE-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2 table 2
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1 table 2
    The main routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2
    # use the CABLE-LAN gateway as default, so general internet traffic from MEDIABOX runs over CABLEBOX
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1
    define the lookup rules
ip rule add from 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip rule add from 192.168.2.2 table 2
    To test the setup:
    ip route show
    ip route show table 1
    ip route show table 2
I don't know how to persist something like this in ArchLinux using netctl. Might require to write a special systemd unit for it. Above is a working example from a RedHat box at my company.

  • How can I get on the internet with my newly purchased used G5 Power Mac if my ethernet port failed?

We just bought our son a used G5 Power Mac, but when we got it home and tried to hook it up to the internet, no luck. We changed ethernet calbes, tried plugging directly into wall cable (by-passing router), even tried to do manual config, but no luck. I took it to the Genius Bar today and they said the ethernet plug was broken, and they did not have anything for a "vintage" machine like this.
The Genius Bar tech told me to buy a USB Network Adaptor, however no one (Best Buy, Radio Shack, even searched the internet) seems to have them for Mac. What can I do to get this puppy connected to the internet and how much would it cost? Did we get screwed?

  • Can I convert a PB 1400's PC card port to a ethernet port for file sharing?

My plan here is to connect a PowerBook 1400cs/133 running OS 8.6 to an iBook G4 running OS 10.4 by means of an ethernet crossover cable, and move my important files (ClarisWorks 4.0 docs and games mostly) to the new computer. But the PB 1400 has no ethernet port! Is there something I can put in the PC card slot that will convert it to an ethernet port?

    jpl, Denis, here's my setup:
The PB 1400 is connected to the iBook via a Farallon EtherWave/EtherMac Ethernet PC Card (with a blue arrow, PCMCIA 2.1, PC Card Standard). I have the Farallon software installed and the Farallon extension turned on. A "Farallon EN Card" icon appears on my desktop, and the little light on the cord where it connects to the card is green. I used to use the card to connect to the internet back in the day when the 1400 was my primary computer, so I'm confident it works.
The PB 1400 (name: Ben's PowerBook 1400): AppleTalk, configured to connect via alternate ethernet. File sharing, on. TCP/IP, connected via AppleTalk (Mac IP). I've tried configuring that both "Using Mac IP server" and manually by entering in the iBook's IP address and router address (the 1400 is not connected to the internet). As far as I can tell, Users/Groups is configured; it has "Ben" as "user" and "Guest" as "guest user."
The iBook (name: Ben's iBook G4) is set up basically identical to the way jpl describes his iMac above. Like his, the services panel of sharing on the iBook says "Other Macintosh users can access your computer at afp://x.x.x.6." I also manually entered the iBook's IP address, subnet mask, and router. Under my shared location, under Built-in Ethernet, TCP/IP is configured and AppleTalk is active.
Still, file sharing is not working. When I try to access the iBook from the 1400, I go to the Chooser, click the AppleShare icon, and "Ben's iBook G4" in the file server window. When I select it and click OK, I go to a screen to enter my name (Ben) and password as a registered user. I'm not sure if the password it wants is the file sharing password I set up for the 1400 or the administrator password for the iBook, so I tried them both. I also tried connecting as a "guest." In all cases, after I hit the "Connect" button, I got the error message "The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken."
No luck going the opposite direction either. When I go to Go: Connect to Server: Browse on the iBook, "Ben's PowerBook 1400" appears in the Network area, but when I select it and hit the "connect" button, I get this error message: "The file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it."

  • The ethernet port on the thunderbolt display is not working

The ethernet is working when the cable is connected directly to my mac laptop but when connected the thunderbolt display there is no connection.  Is there some type of set up for the ethernet connection or can this port just be broken?
    Thanks for the help!

Afterthought on an older post: it isn't immediately clear that the Ethernet port on the Thunderbolt Display works through the "Display Ethernet" interface, rather than through the "Thunderbolt Ethernet" interface. The latter was already present in the list of network interfaces in Network Preferences, while the former had to be added via the + button --- at least that was the case when I installed the TB display to work with my 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina this week.
The AppleCare rep didn't know the difference either and agreed with me that it was puzzling that using the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter on the Thunderbolt port of the display did work, wheras using the Ethernet port directly didn't (even though there were lights flashing on the Ethernet port of that other computer I tried to connect to in Internet Sharing mode). Close reading of the above posts made me go look for that mysterious "Display Ethernet" interface...  thank you Clinton!

  • Cisco 3548 xl and ports broken

Hello could you please help me.
we have several ports broken in cat 3548 xl ( fast 35,37,38,39) when we are trying to connect new workstations to them, ports do not work.
there is over 80 procent packet loss.
    all other ports work ok.
Do you konw if there is a known problem in cat 3548xl's. ( could not find anything in bug toolkit)
    our version is flash:c3500XL-c3h2s-mz-120-5.3.WC.1.bin
    Model number: WS-C3548-XL-EN
    System serial number: FAB0534M322
    i thank you in advance,
    best regards,
    Susanna

Hello all and thank you for the replies !
i can now open the referred cisco-page. I will check the page
Here are anwers to all questions. we will boot the switch as soon as possible and see what happens.
do you know a good debug command what to use to see if port is acting wrong ?
i know it is not a duplex problem, since we have had a lot of duplex problems ( and this is a different case). All the other ports seem to work fine ( except for 35,37,38, 38)
laptop had only 10/100 nic and it works fine with another 3548 ( next to the 'faulty switch).
both the printer and laptop had same kind of problem.
    Here are the tests
    1) first the switch port and printer had auto config ( auto speed/auto duplex) in ports/ nic.
    --> only 20 % of pings succeeded.
sometimes ping succeeded 10 times and then there was 30 fialed ping-packets.
    2) then printers configuration was changed to 100/FD. the link started to work ( ping succeeded 100%) the switch had still auto speed and duplex, and therefore switch had only 100/HD.
when i changed switch port to 100/full, printer lost its network connection and did not answer at all to pings.
3 ) when i changed the switch port back to auto ( autospeed/auto duplex) the printer did not start to work again.
when swicth and laptop/printer were configure to auto, switch saw the port as 100/FD, negotiation was ok. as soon as data was going to the port, connection stopped working.
here is the show int . it is down, since we cant use the port at the moment. but as you can see there are no errors
BTW the printer and laptop work fine in the same switch in port 41.
    best regards TIA ! Susanna

I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light. My research has led me to a dead-end so far. Running 10.3.9 on my server. XServe Dual 2.3
I want to have File services and the various other duties pushed through one ethernet port, and print services on the other. I know there is probably a config file to make one simple edit, but I can not find it, or perhaps a "defaults" type command.
Also, where is this "command-line administration guide" that I keep running across on Apple's support?
    Thanks in advance.

Similar issue here too. Is it the subnet? Basically, I'm having a problem printing to an AirportExpress-served printer. Our network looks like this:
    (From Outside...>>>...to Inside)
    (Public IP) DSL Modem
    ...(10.0.0.x) Airport Express -- HP DesignJet 100 USB -- Airtunes/stereo
    ...(10.0.0.x) NetGear Wireless Router
    ...(10.0.0.x nic 0) Mac OS X Server (192.168.0.x nic1)
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
The printer driver does not appear to be able to do IP printing, it assumes a direct USB connection. We can setup the OS X Server with the printer served by the Airport Express, as it is found via Bonjour, and then we share its queue via Server Admin. The problem is that the LAN clients cannot print to this server queue. The printer gets stopped at the server.
If we turn OFF the OS X Server's firewall, printing works from both the clients and obviously from the Server. I think my question is this: what ports or services need to be turned on in order for the clients to print? There is no clear checkbox for "Bonjour Printer Sharing", and I'm curious what ports this would open, and if it would be safe. I thought it would work because we're pushing the print job up through the firewall, but apparently some response needs to come back through the firewall, and that's what's not happening.
And to tack onto this, how could we also push iTunes to the Airport Express from the Clients? Assuming the music goes over different ports than the print jobs. ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
