Headphone jack acting on the fritz

I just started noticing that the headphone jack does some strange stuff when I plug a set of headphones into it. When they are fully plugged in, no sound comes from the headphones, and it makes the laptop speakers quiet and tinny. If i plug it in halfway, the laptop speakers play, and headphones sound tinny. The mic jack works just fine. When I go to sound testing in the windows control panel, I get full audio from the test, but anything other than that does what is mentioned above.

Just had this problem.  Found this solution on another board:
1. Right click the volume control icon in the system tray
2. Select "Playback Devices"
3. Select "communication headphones" -> Properties
4. Switch to "Don't use this device (disable)"
Don't know why but it worked.

  • Is the headphone jack flush on the new iphone 3gs?

i was just curious if they left the headphone jack flush like the iphone 3g?

Yes .. big improvement over my 2G in that respect (and many others).
But choosing a case which does not interfere with some headphone plugs can still be an issue.

Took apart Macbook pro 13 to remove broken headphone tip in the jack. Had to remove battery to get to the headphone jack. Now the laptop won't start. The power button is just not responding. Battery indicator showed charge of 3 dots initially but now only the last dot is blinking. The power cable used to light up green initially but now the green light is gone. I have tried SMC reset, which didn't work. What are my options?

  • Headphone jack acting up?!

Lately my headphone jack in my iPhone has been acting up. Nearly all the time it doesn't recognise the fact that I have pulled out the headphone. The problem is, in this case, no sound at all is played through the speaker. So if I get a call, no sound is played, and I miss the call. Also no music is played through the speaker, or text sounds.
If I gently blow in the headphone slot, it fixes the problem, but if I leave my iphone alone, a few minutes later, it thinks the headphone is back in, and I'm back to square one.
Anyone else had similar problems? I'd like to send it back to get it fixed, because clearly this is a major problem, and it is really annoying, however my nearest Apple store is like 60 or so miles away, and being a student, I don't exactly have that much time to get to it. Is there another fix at all?

It's a much reported problem. The best fix is to unplug the earphones several times, sometimes many times, to resolve it. My guess is that it is caused by the deeper-than-usual bespoke Apple earphone recess, which causes dust and linto to be trapped there, so that when you disconnect the earphones, a contact is still being made. Hopefully this bit will be redesigned in future models. But for now, we have to live with it, or take it back for a replacement.

  • There is a problem with the left headphone or stereo  headphone jack connection in the ipod touch 2nd generation

I have had my ipod touch 2nd generation for 3 yrs. Now its been a year with this problem but i never seem to get it fixed because i lost my warranty and repair certificate a year ago. So  the problem is whenever I put in a headphone jack for some reason only the right head phone or right speaker works not the left, but when i place the ipod on the docking port both speakers on my stereo work.
Now I have taken great care of this thing. Never lost it. I assume that a connection inside the jack port is pushed in from debrie (forgot how to spell that word)  because, I always place my ipod into my pocket. The only way to get the left speaker or headphone to work is to push on the headphone jack so it tilts, then the left speaker works; but when i release it the left speaker or headphone turns off or stop making sound. So i know its not wiring problems its the connection for the headphone jack to the ipods jack's connection for the left speaker. Though microphones work.
My question is can this be a DIY or do i have to take it in to a local apple store. Problem i lost the warranty and protection repair form or license 2 years ago. I have had no problems with my ipod at all these years until this problem has consisted to happen since last year.
    Anything?
    Thanks,

    - If you want to replace the headphone jack yourself see:
    iPod Touch Repair - iFixit
    - Apple will only exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price, You get a new battery.  However, it may not be worth it for a 2G iPod.
Apple - Support - iPod - Repair pricing- A third-party place like this one is less expensive. Google from more places.

  • Headphone jack problem with the zen mi

Not even 2 months after sending it in to be fixed, and I can't move my head without the sound getting distorted. Why don't they fix the problem not just make it work for a month in a half. Is there anyway to fix this withut sending it in?

I gathered that a lot of people have experienced headphone jack problems with their players, but I thought that was with the Micros only. I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one. Or maybe I'm not. I dunno.
Anyway, I sent an e-mail to customer support. My wife bought the unit for me for a Christmas present last year, so it's only a couple of months out of warranty. If nothing else, hopefully Creative will tell me how to ship it back for repairs at my own expense (it's gotta be cheaper than buying a new one).

  • Zen Micro Headphone Jack problems-are the new ones

Gonna buy a Zen Micro Photo 8GB player-had one of the 5gb ones a year and a half ago and the headphone jack went on that-have the problems with the headphone jack been sorted out in the new ones?

I have not seen any reports of problems with the Zen MicroPhoto's headphone jack.

  • How do i get the sound to turn back onto my macbook? There's an unremovable headphone jack stuck inside the jack hole

A piece of a headphone jack broke off inside my macbook, and i am unable to remove it.  Since it is still in the laptop, my laptop is unable to play music from the internal speakers, is there anyway i can override this and get the speakers to work without removing the jack?

Get a USB headset or a USB to headphone jack adapter.

  • Headphone jack acting really wierd

So i've had my ipod since christmas and for the past month or so whenever i plug and headphones into it only the left earpiece works. I've tried various headphone and the same thing happens. I've tried to blow any dirt or anything that might be in there but not came out. both earpieces work only when that head phones are put into the jack half way. that is pointless for me since i skateboard and there's alot of movement so it falls out. Can some one help me? i was thinking on sending it back to apple or go back to BestBuy where i got it.

    Well, I don't know BestBuy's policies.
But if it is a hardware defect they either have to give you a new one or repair the one you have.
If BestBuy isn't cooperative, you can just send it to Apple: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod.

  • How do I disable the headphone jack on a iMac?

Hey my headphone broke of when it was in the headphone jack on the iMac. I've been unsing a USB sound bar that works great but I'd like to use the iMac speakers. I know there's a way of disabling the headphone jack as the OS controls the hardware. I'm running Mac OS X 10.9.3. Could you guys please give me any suggestions? Thanks

You need to get the busted plug out of the headphone jack. Because there is a micro switch in-side the headphone jack that tells the MIDI setup to only send the sound out to the headphone jack.
Go to > Removing a broken headphone plug - Google Search or take it to your local AASP for service.

  • How do I flip screen so the headphone jack is on top?

I recently upgraded from the iPhone 4s to the iPhone 5s.  I hate the iPhone 5s for one reason only: the headphone jack is on the bottom of the phone.  I realize I should not care so much, this phone makes me irrationally angry each and every time I try to use headphones with it. If I am working out, I have to set the phone upside down on the machine as I run. If the phone is in my pocket, I am constantly flipping it over every time I take it out of my pocket. That is annoying in and of itself, but it also causes the headphone cord to get tangled and shorten when I put it back into my pocket. Also, it makes it difficult to work on the phone while listening to my headphones. The cord sticking out from the bottom prevents me from using my pinky to stabilize the phone in my hand. I almost never dropped my iPhone 4s in over two years that I had it. I drop the iPhone 5s once a week because it won't let me hold it securely.  I would not buy an iPhone 5s if I had it to do over again.
Anyway, since I am stuck with this stupid phone, is there any way to flip the screen 180 degrees so that the button, headphone jack, and speakers would all be on the top.  I am tired of cursing my phone and Apple every time I use it.

The LG Tones are, in my opinion comparable or better in quality to yurbuds (though I can't say I think yurbuds are that great). I also have a pair of Jabras that are designed especially for sports use. They take a bit of getting used to putting on but they are very good. Not having a cord rubbing against my shirt while I run is a great thing.
I haven't seen one in a while but there used to be adapters (on a lanyard, I think) you could plug a headset into which then connect to your device over BT. You could therefore use a headset of your choice. If I recall, Motorola used to make one.

  • Why is the headphone jack on the bottom?

I was really excited for the iPhone 5 but now I don't think I'll be getting one.  For me, changing the location of the headphone jack is entirely unnecessary.  I've been reading up on this, and the only reason I can find for it is because people say it's more "natural" to put their phone in their pocket upside down; this doesn't make any sense to me!  Is it really that hard to move your arm straight down to your pocket with your wrist straight instead of only rotating your elbow?  I find it irritating that I would have to store the phone upside down in my pocket, and that would just make it harder to adjust the volume or flick the vibrate on without taking it out of my pocket.  That's something I do all the time: walk into a classroom or theater, and need to make sure my phone is on silent without pulling it out and drawing attention to myself.
I also get that you can lay the phone flat on a desk and have the headphone cord hang off the edge.  But what about when I have the phone propped up?  I guess I can't do that anymore.  I also can't leave it upright in a cupholder while I drive.
I've been an iPhone user because I like how professional and uniform Apple products look.  But storing and displaying my phone upside down destroys that asthetic for me.  I know some people will say that orientation is a stupid thing to quibble about, but Steve Jobs was known to obsess over far smaller things (I'm not saying this was one of them), and that's what makes Apple products so well thought-out.
So what is the point of putting the headphone jack on the bottom?  Can anyone give me a real reason that I can support?  I really want to be able to get excited about this phone, but at this point I think it's unfortunately a deal-breaker for me.

Goldplatedrock, i agree with you. This is not an over reaction. Steve Jobs was meticulous with design and usability - and i am sure he would NOT have accepted the headphone jack going to the bottom. He was known to scrap designs 6 weeks before the first iphone was about to hit the market.
It really is a a terrible move but i think they had to move it for engineering reasons.
It has even been moved on the new ipod touch.
Think of all the car holders and desk docking stations that will not be able to be used when wanting to keep the headphones connected. Plus upside down in your pocket? - that really *****.
I also wonder how the new lightining connector will hold up the whole phone with accessories like speakers - it will not be able to hold it up.
    Steve come back..............

  • Did the headphone jack location shift on the 4s?

I just bought an Otterbox Defender case for my new iPhone 4s (Verizon model).  The case fits well except that the hole for the headphones is a few mm to the right of the jack.  Did the location of the headphone jack shift from the 4 to the 4s?

No, I think it is in the same area, but the mute switch has moved a few mm down.
