Headphone jack broken in socket - problem solved.

HI
I've recently removed a broken headphone  jack from an ipod touch and as there appears to be a number of people to whom this has happened i thought i'd share how i did it.
Firstly the more of the plug you can see the better.
Secondly  can you see any plastic ? Yes ....then great.
Next find a thin needle and a pair of pliers
what i did was heat the needle until it was red hot  over a gas ring
then push the end of the  hot needle   into the plastic of the plug  about 1-2 mm
hold it steady and blow to cool it down. Hopefully the plug will now be attached to the needle.
Then lifted the plug out          as you can see there was precious little left so the more plastic you can seee the better.
I have never heard of this method  being used  so you heard it here first ....

After trying a load of other methods (I dare not try superglue) - I followed vespuccio's advice to the letter and it worked a treat - just when I was on the point of giving up - Bingo!
You do have to take care when using the hot needle, but I couldn't believe it when it worked on my second attempt.
What a brilliant solution!  Thank you so much for posting this you made mine and my daughter's Christmas so much better.

  • Headphone jack broken off inside Macbook--HELP!

My dad recently gave me his MacBook Pro, only problem is the audio is completely broken. This occurred when the computer was on the bed with headphones were plugged into the headphone port, and the dog jumped on the headphone jack, breaking it off inside of the computer.... The piece is totally irretrievable; it's broken off far inside of the headphone port. My father contacted the Apple store and I contacted Mac Mall, and they both said the same thing--it will have to be taken apart, and could cost up to $900 to fix!!!
This is a huge expense that I would like to avoid if possible..... my question is, is there any way to get around this problem? Is there any way I can get audio without having the computer taken apart to get the broken headphone piece out? Are there perhaps external speakers that work through the USB port? Or is there a way to change the settings so the computer doesn't acknowledge that there is something plugged in the headphone port? I really don't know! I'm totally desperate. Anything helps. Thanks!

    Yes, easy way around it.
look up a JEWELRY REPAIR place, usually they charge $30 or $40
they drill into the back of the jack, then insert a mini jewelers screw and yank it out.   Ive done it myself for a customer long ago.
Many jewelry repair people do such things.

  • Headphone jack BROKEN

    Hey all,
I have one question, one major problem,
i Have a 5th generation video Ipod (late 2006), with a broken headphone jack. its broken because only my music comes out of the left headphone/speaker. i know its not my headphones because i have pluged it to my come speakers, and various headphones that all work. i can get sound to come out of the right head phone speak some times if i push and hold back the headphones jack while its plugged in. other than that i can't get any sound out at all. If someone could point me in the direction to contact Apple directly or could offer up solutions or any help that would be great.
    Thank you

  • Pavilion g6 headphone jack broken?

I have recently had the headphone port of my Pavilion g6 mess up and play only one side sometimes and one day I got really frustrated and broke the 3.5mm plug off in it but managed to get it out. It now only ditributes right side music or right channel. Is it broken or what? If so, where can I buy a replacement jack and get it installed or do I have to send it to HP to have them relplace it? Does this require the purchase of a new motherboard, or maybe even a new computer? Thanks ahead of time and any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi WyredPg6, welcome to the HP Forums. It appears as though the headphone jack is actually part of the system board. To replace the jack, is to replace the entire system board.
I referred to page 18 on this : HP Pavilion G6 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
It shows the replaceable parts, and #10 is the system board, you will notice the connectors are not denoted with replacement parts.
It might be more inexpensive for you to purchase a USB Sound Card. You could disable the onboard sound, and use external headphones/speakers.
If that isn't an option for you, you can find compatible system board part numbers starting on Page 71. These can be used on: HP Part Surfer
    I hope this helps.

  • All headphones give distorted, crackly sound. Sometimes no sound. Headphone jack broken? Apple expresslane support giving a "generic error" message whenever I try to send in for service...

As in the title. For a while the headphone jack is occasionally crackly when the jack moves around in the port. It finally died today when I plugged it in and all the audio is heavily distorted and sometimes cuts out completely. Whenever I try to set up a service with Apple I keep getting this error message:
We're sorry, but we are unable to complete your request at this time.
Please try again in a few minutes or start over now.
I can't get through to the Irish support phone number either, it keeps saying number not recognised. Is there any other way I can send my iphone in for service (closest genius bar is 500km away...)

ATA bus error means that data corruption occurred during transmission over ATA bus (SATA or PATA). This type of errors can be indicated by
ICRC or ABRT error as described in the section called “ATA/ATAPI device error (non-NCQ / non-CHECK CONDITION)”.
Controller-specific error completion with error information indicating transmission error.
On some controllers, command timeout. In this case, there may be a mechanism to determine that the timeout is due to transmission error.
Unknown/random errors, timeouts and all sorts of weirdities.
As described above, transmission errors can cause wide variety of symptoms ranging from device ICRC error to random device lockup, and, for many cases, there is no way to tell if an error condition is due to transmission error or not; therefore, it's necessary to employ some kind of heuristic when dealing with errors and timeouts. For example, encountering repetitive ABRT errors for known supported command is likely to indicate ATA bus error.
Once it's determined that ATA bus errors have possibly occurred, lowering ATA bus transmission speed is one of actions which may alleviate the problem.
I'd also add; make sure you have good backups when ATA errors are frequent

  • Headphone jack broken, using dock connector instead?

So after dropping my iPod the other day the headphone jack is acting a little funky, I have to twist and fiddle with the headphones a little bit to get the sound to play in both ears nicely (It's not the headphones as I've tried with several pairs).
Since my warranty has expired I was hoping to use a dock connector I believe its called then connected to my headphones.
    My questions are
    1) Will this avoid the sound issue I'm having since I ASSUME it's an issue with just the headphone jack.
2)I'm looking at these two products
    http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-35508-iPod-Compatible-Connector/dp/B000J022G6
    http://www.yourusbcable.com/product/Ipod%20Dock%20Connector
which will then need another thing to connect to my headphones, can anyone think of a better way of or product for doing this?

I am also having problems with my headphone jack. if i can get best buy to validate my 2 yr warranty i can exchange, but in the meantime i ordered some bluetooth headphones. i bought these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/595037-REG/SonyDRBT100CX_BLU_DR_BT100CX_Bluetooth_WirelessStereo.html

  • Headphone jack/hookup to stereo problem with existing jack??

Is it just me, or is the jack port different for the iPhone? Went to use it in my boat today where no less than 3 other ipods have been plugged in..... the jack won't go all the way into the hole. The iphone jack requires a skinny little plug to slip past the phone case.
Let me guess... have to buy a special iPhone headphone out to RCA cable?

I noticed the same problem, and bought a Belkin adapter. Unfortunately, the Belkin adapter is long and sticks out of the jack like a huge grey antenna. However, I discovered another solution to the problem from another forum. If you buy an Apple iPod shuffle sport case, it comes with an adapter that deals with this issue. It's more of an extension cord design that was made because the case design prevented headphones from seating all the way into the headphone jack on the shuffle. Here's a link with a pic and further explanation: http://www.penmachine.com/2007/07/this-adapter-from-sport-case-for
The case that includes the adapter costs $29 at the apple store. However, I was able to get one on eBay for $4, including shipping. There seemed to be quite a few available too. Finally, Griffin has created an adapter that looks like the same design, but it isn't available for purchase yet. Unlike the sport case adapter, which comes only in white, Griffin's will be available in black or white.

  • Headphone jack broken in port; no sound

I own a 13" MBP (May 2010) running Mac OSX [Snow Leopard, updated regularly - two clean installs since issue occurred]. In December, I was trying to capture audio for a presentation through a dated/borrowed microphone. The microphone's jack broke off inside of my Macbook. Since then, I have no longer been able to output audio through my port.
    CheatSheet of facts
40% Of the port is blocked by the tip of a headphone/microphone/3.5mm cable.
    Blockage is not removable
Tweezers, Toothpick with rubber cement, superglue, dentist pick
Performed by myself AND day supervisor at a Apple Store
    Applecare is expired
Mac OSX doesn't produce sound - in fact all controls are disabled. Audio options are greyed out on my toolbar, no controls available in Applications/Audio MIDI Configuration.
I have reinstalled Mac OS 2 times
Hard drive crashed, physical defect recognized and rectified by a AppleCare Tech
Windows 7 Ultimate (64) installed through Bootcamp - sound is produced when in Windows
Willing to write some AppleScript to disable the port, if someone can give me some help
TL;DR - Broke a 3.5mm jack in my headphone port on my MBP; Sound is no longer produced under MacOSX, but does occur in Windows 7, loaded through Bootcamp.

So open or have someone open the Macbook and remove the broken piece from the headphone jack. > Mac Repair - iFixit
In all of my 5 years here, I have never seen a script or hack around that part of OS X

  • Quick fixes for a snapped headphone jack in the socket...

    Hi all!
I have a snapped jack stuck in the headphone socket and was wondering what the options are! New phone/repair is impractical as Ill be buying a new phone when I get back from the hols but just need something to hold me over for a month or so.
So far I've come to the conclusion that trying to remove the jack may make matters worse so im considering either using a Bluetooth headset or just buying a really cheap payg and call forwarding to that. The intention there is that I would carry both phones at all times.
I'd prefer the Bluetooth option but not too sure if it would override the headphone jack??
    HELP!!
    (thanks in advance people!)

    Well,
Exactly 9 days after my 3-month parts & labor warranty expired, my headphone jack failed. 9 days! I hoped it wouldn't happen, and believe me -- I babied this player. Heck, I only ever took it on the train to commute to work and on my way home.
There are absolutely no warning signs. One day it was fine, the next I got intermittent sound out of one of the phones. That's all.
Regardless, I still love this player, and hope that Creative will still honor the 3-month warranty as it just recently expired. And no, I'm not screaming class-action lawsuit, as I have faith in Creative -- they've done well by me in the past.
    Keep ya posted!
I think Creative said it's a full year warranty for the headphone jack, not 3 months. But contact support first to confirm.

  • Iphone4s headphone jack broken, is there an adapter to listen to music through charger port?

My IPhone 4S headphone jack no longer works. It's one month out of warranty. It's the second phone that this has happened with. Is there an adapter available to let me use charger jack to listen to music?

  • Is my headphone jack broken?

I was just listening to music when I dropped my iphone 4s on to my floor. (It has an otterbox on it). After I picked it up, nothing would play through the headphones. I tried rebooting it, cleaning the headphone jack and I'm going to try to restore it. If this doesnt work any suggestions?

I just restored my iphone and nothing changed. And I forgot to mention that it's still under warranty by verizon. So anyway, is my only option now to just get a new phone?

  • Ipod classic headphone jack broken

    Hi all,
Right, basically I am pretty sure my headphone jack is buggered. It only plays out of one ear on 3 different working sets of headphones. If i lift it up at a certain point I can get sound in both ears but thats it. Anyway, I am aware this needs replacing, however should I go with the apple store or go to a local independant place to get it fixed. I've researched it and it is not a big job to do, and relatively cheap. I'm just concerned that apple will grossly overcharge me for a simple repair. Anyone know a rough price for it?
    Thanks!

it could be just a bad contact
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk

i have an ipod touch 4th gen ... love it .. but only one problem... the headphone jack is giving trouble.... help me plz!!

Have you verified that it is the headphone jack that is the problem by trying opther sets of headphones?
Have you tried cleaning the jack by using a QTip or similar ite?
If you confirmed that the headphone jack is the problem Apple will ony exchange the iPod for $99, $149 or $1999 depending upon the capacity.

  • Headphone jack iMac 2012

I have a 21" 2012 iMac, and have experiencing problems with the headphone jack ever since the second week of buying it ( about 1.5 months ago).
When I insert a headphone jack into the socket, the head phones, for the most part, will not pay sound. The speaker icon in the top right, changes from a black feature to grey, as if the headphones are not connected.
Sometimes sound will play, but only briefly; mostly the icon will apear as disconnected.
The inbuilt computer speakers do work.
It is not a problem with the headphones, I have tried a number of pairs and all experience this problem.
It is not that I am not inserting the jack fully, I am and I hear the click.
I have been to System preferences and in the output box, it says that the selected device has no output controls.
Is this a software problem, or hardware?
It did work for the first week, and does occasionally work, but only temporally.
Any advice would be graftuly recieved!

Hello, I hear that jack is prone to problems, but...
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back
