Headphone jack causes play/pause

It appears that if I flex the headphones jack (not the wire, the solid jack part in the phone) it causes the iPhone to play and pause, hang up calls, or trigger voice control. I tried this with the headphones that came with the iPhone and a pair of the Apple In-Ear headphones I bough a while ago. Neither of the headphones cause any problems on my iPad, so I can only really assume that it is being caused by some part of the actual iPhone. Has anyone else had problems with this? It ends up happening to me a lot, as causing any tension on the jack will cause things to happen.

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions,
It should be pretty hard to flex the solid jack inside the iPhone. And I bet any device would behave unusually if you stress it in a way that isn't normal.
You can see the rings in the headphone jack that allow the controls on the headset to adjust volume, skip tracks, and end calls. So, if you were to hit those controls in abnormal ways they would behave abnormally.
Is anything happening when you use the iPhone normally? Try shooting some compressed air in the headphone jack to remove any lint or dirt that you might not be able to see.
WTH.

  • No Sound Through Headphone Jack When playing Video

    Hi All
I got a strange problem. My MINI stopped playing audio from videos through the headphone jack.
This includes iTunes, QuickTime, and Youtube. Audio files in iTunes work fine. If I unplug the headphones all is OK. I have tried the Audio MIDI setup, starting and stopping Garage Band, but no help. I know it used to work but I am not sure when it stopped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Had the same problem. My sound was fine until it suddenly went stumm from one day to the next. This fixed it in 3 seconds:
    1. open /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup
    2. check the properties for Built In Output.
    3. It might be set to 96Hz. Change it to 44.1KHz
No idea what caused it to be set to 96HZ though.

  • Inserting/removing headphone jack causes Application and/or Finder to crash

Whenever (and every time) I insert or remove any headphones from the headphone jack in my PowerBook, the current Application and sometimes the Finder immediately crashes. I'm not sure if this started after either the 10.4.2 or 10.4.3 updates, but I suspect that the updates are unrelated. Is this something others have experienced? Is it a hardward problem or a sound driver problem? I suspect that I need to send it in for repair -- but wanted to see if this is a know problem. Thanks.

Eric, welcome to the discussions, as you say, (Send it in)
Inserting or removing headphones should not cause these issues, and I haven't seen anything on this, It sounds like an issolated case...Cheers...Don

  • Can I override the headphone jack to play through speakers?

Macbook pro 15" early 2011, running mavericks 10.9.5
Some cabling broke off in the headphone jack and I can't play sound through my speakers since it's still identifying headphones. I read that this is a mechanical switch and can't be fixed by software, but that was like a year ago.
    Is this still the case?

how can I pan the left side to play through both speakers (in mono)?
you can not, you'll need to create a mono version of the left channel:

  • Cord unplugged from headphone jack causes Mac OSX to fail and shutdown.

I have a sound system running through my iMac. When I unplug the sound system, my iMac desktop turns gray & a message tells me that Mac OSX has quit. This has happened multiple times & I would like to know why.

Obviously, this should not happen. Mac OS X does make a software setting change when it senses the headphones mini-jack being removed. The System Preferences Sound pane Output tab setting gets changed to +built-in speakers+ and the speaker output volume is set to the previously set value for the +built-in speakers+ (which is stored separately from the headphones volume). It is not just a hardware speaker on/off switch like in most PCs.
So with that in mind, my first suggestion is to reset the PRAM.

Some sound parameters are stored in PRAM.

  • Headphone jack only plays through Right

I'm trying to listen to music and the left earbud is way weaker than my right. I tried different headphones and they are not the problem. I'm sure it's the Mac, but I don't know if there is an eas fix or if I need to send it in. What should I do?

Have you made certain that the balance in System Preferences>Sound is set in the middle?

    Hi @chadhogan121
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I saw your post regarding the problems with sound only coming out on one side of the headphones. I will be happy to help you with that. Have you tried a different set of headphones to see if the same thing happens? This HP document No Sound from Speaker will show you how to use the built-in Windows troubleshooter. Give that a try.

  • Play/pause button problem on

So sometimes the button just doesnt work. I finally figured out when and why. It only happens when I have my Belkin FM tunecast 2 transmitter plugged into it. Once I take that out and put the headphones back in, the play/button works just fine. Why that happens you ask? I have no idea!!!

I also have a TuneCast II and have no issues with it. That is unless I unplug it. Then I get the same result as unplugging the headphones.
Here is what I posted a couple days ago in a topic titled.
[Micro] Back Button Only Works w/ Headphones Attached
OK. Here is what I have noticed as of late regarding this issue.
. If I turn on the Micro WITHOUT anything plugged into the headphone jack I get this. All buttons are NON responsi've for a couple of seconds. Then All but the Play/Pause button become responsi've but at a lesser level than my prefs are set for. The Play/Pause button WILL not do anything. It is not recognized.
    2. If I plug something into the headphone jack all buttons then become fully responsi've at the level I have set in the prefs. Play/Pause functions normally.
    3. If I then remove the cable from the headphone jack the Play/Pause button once again becomes NON responsi've and the other buttons return to a less responsi've state.
    4. Reinserting a cable results in full responsi'veness again.
Is this intentional in the firmware? It seems to make sense that if nothing is connected to the headphone jack then there realy is NO reason for the Play/Pause button to function or any button for that matter. Is this possibly a measure to preserve battery life incase of accidental power on?
Oh. I have done similar tests while connected to my PC via only USB and had similar results. It seems that the Micro is only fully responsi've when a cable of some sort is connected to it.
Anyone have any ideas? I would especially like to hear from Jeremy or Cat.Message Edited by MicroZealot on 04-2-2005 :5 PMMessage Edited by MicroZealot on 04-2-2005 :53 PM

  • Sound Output - Internal Speaker and Headphone Jack?

I just installed my new iMac, which replaced my Mac Mini. I hook my Mac to my stereo via the headphone jack for playing iTunes. But most of the time I don't have the stereo on.
is there a way to keep the headphone jack plugged in and still have audio come out the internal speaker? Basically send audio output to both the internal speaker and the headphone jack at the same time?
On the Mac Mini this wasn't an issue because I had a splitter that ran from the mini to my monitor speakers and to my stereo.
    Thanks!

Hi, you can get the internals to give notice of emails & actions..externals for any other sound..
Sadly your wishes on this matter will not come to fruition...L

  • IPhone 5 question about Bluetooth headsets and headphone jack audio out.

I have an iPhone 5. When I'm connected to a bluetooth headset, can I still use the headphone jack to play audio through my stereo between calls without having to disconnect the headphone jack for calls or shut off the headset for tunes?

when one connects a wires headset it it mutes the internal speaker
when one connects a bluetooth headset it mutes the internal speaker and any wired connected headsets

  • Anyone got an idea how much replacing headphone jack costs at Apple Store

My 1st Gen - (actually a replacement for a dodgy one) is out of warranty and the headphone jack is playing up. Anyone got a guide price for what they would charge me at Apple Store - Im not happy this had happened, but I know the realities of warranties. I own a Dyson!

Luvlabs is correct; Apple charges a flat price for out-of-warranty repair (actually it will be a replacement, probably with a refurbished unit) regardless of the problem with the iPod. Apple's repair pricing can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
There are independent service providers that may be able to offer a lower price for the repair. I can't make any recommendations, but if you search the web for "ipod repair" you should find a number of options, and someone else here may be able to recommend a service provider.
    Regards.

  • Music through headphone jack, calls through bluetooth

Can I connect the iPhone to my car through the headphone jack to play music through my car stero, while at the same time having a bluetooth headset connected to send/receive calls?

i've had my phone connected to my car stereo via the dock connector, and have been able to answer calls via bluetooth. so i would imagine it works the same way with the headphone jack.

  • Headphones causing random Play/Pause, skipping

When I workout I use my apple headphones to listen to music on my iPhone 4 and in the last couple of weeks my headphones were causing the songs to randomly skip to the next song or pause the song, etc. I figured my headphones were old and the sweat finally got to it, but I tried new ones and they are doing the same thing. I also heard something like this was happening on monster headphones that had ControlTalk. Is this related?

not sure about the pausing. it could be sweat in the contacts. Do you have shake to shuffle turned on in the ipod settings? this might be the reason for skipping songs

    Michael,
Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &
    Best regards,
    David
