Headphone Jack Light + Internal Speakers Gone?

When I took out the cable to my speakers from my PowerBook's headphone jack I noticed a red light inside the socket. I plugged the cable back in and the light turned off but came back on about half a second after I took it out again. There is a small LED inside the hole and I have never seen it before. The computer also stopped playing sound out of it's internal speakers completely and in the System Preferences sound menu there is only a line-out option, no internal speaker one. It seems like the light is telling me that I have to plug in speakers to hear sound, but why? The laptop has always worked fine until now so what has made it suddenly do this and how can I get the internal speakers working again?

The light is a fiber optic fiber. Your jack has a dual use. You can use a fober optical cable to get a digital line-out. Your problem may be related, but that's what the light is so don't go sticking anything in there (such as a paper clip) as so many people tend to do for some reason.

  • How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers?

How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers at the same time ? I have a splitter for my audio jack so that when i connect up my second monitor I can have it so it also plays audio as well as anything else i have connected into the jack but how do i let the internal speakers emit sound at the same time?

    Hello,
If you mean the internal speakers in your Mac, you can't play audio through them at the same time you have anything plugged into the headphone jack. When you plug something into the headphone jack, it disconnects the internal speakers.

  • No Sound From Headphone Jack, Only Internal Speakers working in Macbook Pro A1278

Hello, the internal speakers of Macbook Pro A1278 OSX 10.7.5 are working perfectly, but no sound from headphones or external speakers when plugged in. Headphones/speakers recognized when plugged in, shown by System Preferences/Sound, and since the sound stops from internal speakers when headphones/speakers are plugged in. No red light seen coming from headphone jack, as I read in other posts. The problem began after a cable was connected between computer and stereo system. Maybe overloaded the sound card and burned out a connection? Wondering if you think that the sound card needs to be replaced or is there another solution possible? Thank you.

    Hello JohnBoarkman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you hear no sound from your accessory when you connect to your headphone jack. My first troubleshooting suggestion for this situation would be resetting the NVRAM on your Mac. Please use the instructions in the attached article to complete this process and let me know if the issue continues.

  • Headphone Jack Light Up?

In my unibody Macbook, when I run Windows 7, the headphone jack light up in a orange color. It doesn't bother me but I do want to know if its a problem or a future one.

I have had the same issue, when I bootcamp with Win7 the red light is always there. But when I boot up to Snow Leopard the red light is gone.

  • Headphone jack light

occaisionaly a red light comes from my headphone jack and no sound will come from the speakers. the longer i stay on my computer the less the red light comes on and stops whatever it is i'm listening to at the time. i assume it's a setting problem, but i'm computer illiterate and i don't know what to change. i've talked to a few friends with macs about it and they've all never had a problem like this. what should i do to fix it?

Your Macbook has the ability to do optical audio out, so that is what the red light you are seeing is. Normally, an adapter is used for optical audio, but something must have happened to the headphone jack on your Macbook is it is showing without that adapter. Whenever that light is showing, you won't be able to use the headphone jack when that light is showing because it is not sending out that type of audio signal. I would suggest getting it fixed by either calling AppleCare, or making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

  • Switch between headset jack and internal speakers?

How can I switch from "Rear Panel 3.5 mm Jack" to the internal speakers, "ATAPI Internal ATAPI Jack" without unplugging the 3.5mm headset?  Does anyone know?
I have a Windtop 2400 and it has Realtek HD audio ACL888S.  I looked at the specs on Realtek's website and as far as I could see this is possible in the hardware, but can the software trigger this?

    Great, you fixed it!
It looks like the msi gaming control center should be bundled with WMIHookBtnFn, but it's not. This "utility" by now it's almost useless, only the Wifi and camera switch worked.
A detailed explanation of what I did here if someone has the same issue:
-> I looked in msi support-downloads http://www.msi.com/support, selected my  and went to "Exclusive downloads"
-> http://event.msi.com/aio/sw/ In there I just downloaded the msi gaming control center
-> But! when I wanted to install it, he told me that it would update WMIHookBtnFn and when he tried he'd say it's already updated.
-> Solution: Uninstall WMIHookBtnFn and re-run the installation program. Then it says to install the gaming control center.
    -> Reboot the computer
-> And that's it, it should work. You can change the display's configuration, "share internet connection", change microphone/speakers volume and switch wifi, camera and supercharger on off and.. switch between speakers and headphones! *yay!*
-> I tried installing the last version of WMIHookBtnFn again, and it says that it will upgrade the Gaming Control Center. And then tries to execute a "Gaming Control Center.msi" that should be found in the extraction folder of WMIHookBtnFn but it's not.
Thank you very much again, Mog!

  • Left Audio Only From Headphones Jack With External Speakers

Yes, the balance is set properly under the sound system preferences.
So here's the problem, I have JBL Encounter speakers connected via the headphone jack and since yesterday only the left speaker produces sound.
I've plugged my ipod into the JBL speakers and they work fine. I've also used headphones with my computer and again, left audio only.
I've even switched the right and left satellite speakers and again only left audio is produced... though on the right (side) satellite.
Any thoughts on how to correct this? The nearest apple store is 2 and 1/2 hours away so I'd prefer not to go if there is another fix.
My three month phone service is up but I'm still covered under the apple care for a few more months.
    Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if your headphone jack is either defective or has been damaged by having a cord yanked at some stage, Kanji
It is either a trip to your nearest AASP or a mailing box from Apple to get it resolved. Applecare will cover it if the problem isn't due to accidental damage (though a cat tripping on the cord can be enough to produce such results and the price could accordingly be substantial as the port is mounted on the logicboard on recent MBPs as I understand it) .
You might want to try a regular pair of headphones in the socket to make sure the problem also occurs with them, too, though.
    Cheers

  • Audio jack and internal speakers not working!

So my internal speakers no onger work and when I put in my Apple iPhone earphones there is a high pitched sound and they become very hot to the touch. This happened when they were in my ear, not cool. I love my computer and I would hate to give it up for a German keyboard (I bought my computer in NYC and now I live in Switzerland) or not having it for an extended period of time. Comments? Suggestions? Help? Scheisse!

    hi neuroanatomist,
    thx for your suggestion
I read about it, but it doesn't really work for me (or maybe I wasn't able to have it work)
So there is no actual fix to this?

  • Headphone Jack Glowing Red, Internal Speakers Not Working...

Hey, I have a 2.0GHz White MacBook (almost a week old), and I just recently came across this problem (this morning, actually). I usually have my MacBook connected to some external speakers through the headphone jack, the internal speakers are pretty terrible. Anyway, last night I left the computer on playing music as I fell asleep, this morning I woke up and the computer must have some how come unplugged from the AC power, as it was dead. I plugged it back in and everything was fine (I mean, it had to charge up, and the battery 'health' in iStat Pro was down to 93%, also not sure what this means... But everything else was fine). Then, I unplugged my external speakers and the jack was glowing red, I believe there's an LED inside. The internal speakers would then not work.
I did a quick Google search and discovered that this problem had been experienced on MacBook Pros. Someone recommended plugging in a set of headphones, I did so and then unplugged them and the internal speakers worked for a moment. I plugged in the external speakers again, and they worked (and work) fine. The problem is with the internals, they don't work, and plugging in my headphones again has not solved the problem, and the light is still on when the jack is not occupied.
    Any ideas?
[edit] As of this writing, they are currently working, after plugging in the headphones again and unplugging them, however, the light still blinks when I do this, and there is a bit of a hesitation between the headphone being unplugged and the internal speakers kicking in... (longer than normal, I know there was always a slight delay, but this is a few seconds of blinking light and no sound).

you can fix this by "cleaning" the audio jack. the computer thinks that a digital output is connected. if you go to sound under system preferences, and it says digital output rather than internal speakers, then this is the problem.
I used a tightly rolled up piece of toilet paper to clean the jack. I twisted it up, stuck it in the jack, and then moved it around for a while. the red light went off and my internal speakers started working. someone else used a toothpick.
also, before i fixed this, i couldn't turn the volume up or down (unless i was using headphones) and the volume level screen that shows up on the screen had a circle with a line thru it...like the no smoking signs, but small and just under the volume bars.

  • Dv6 - StarCraft II on Internal Speaker & Music Playlist on Headphone Jack at the same time?

Sound Device 2 (Default Communications Device): Communications Headphones (IDT High Definition
    Driver: stwrt64 6.10.6345.0000
I am playing music from Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome - music comes out nice on internal speakers OR headphone jack (connected to speakers or headphones).
I am also playing Starcraft II, the Audio is also awesome on eather headphone jack or internal speakers.
So far I can get Starcraft II to play on headphone output only and my music on the internal speakers, but not the other way around.
For this instance I'd like the in game Audio to play on my Laptop Speakers Only and my Music to play on Headphone (external analog speaker) Output only.
    Please advise.
Also, I must  figure out how to play both Headphone output and Internal Speakers to play together.
My ASUS Notebook PC has an Audio Console that allows me to designate which programs play with headphone output and/or internal speaker but my HP notebook does not have that.
    Please help! :/

it seems that m1r3k found a very good workaround, at least for the Mid 2010 Mac mini models (that I'm using right now). I don't know if it works also with more recent Mac mini models.
Re: After upgrading to lion, cant select HDMI sound setting
Open Audio MIDI Setup.app in /Applications/Utility, click the + (plus) button in the bottom left corner of the window and choose "Create Multi-Output Device". In the new device settings tick the HDMI "Use" checkbox and you're done. Simply go to the usual System Preferences Audio panel and choose the newly created device, without the need to unplug the audio cable from the back of the Mac mini. You can also name the new audio device as you want.
    NOTE:
This is only a workaround for a deliberate choice made by Apple on OS X Lion 10.7.2 and beyond:
Mac mini: About HDMI audio and headphones
Please let Apple know (here or here) how this has made things unnecessary awkward for users and needs to be fixed (these forums don't count, they are not read by Apple's employees)!

  • Windows 7, Gateway ZX4971 All in 1 (factory OE components, never opened) Internal speakers no longer work after Windows Update

I have a Gateway ZX4971 that came from factory with Windows 7 installed, all specs and windows component info is below.
Everything worked fine for over a year then windows applied an update and I no longer have sound coming from my headphone jack or internal speakers.
I have tried restoring the system back to before the update and it didn't make a difference. I have also reinstalled windows and still no sound.
Audio troubleshooter does not discover any connection issues.
There are no errors in device manager, speaker properties, or Audio Properties.
Volume Mixer shows audio is being played with sound indicator.
I must use a USB audio dongle and external speaker to have sound

    Hi,
According to your description, since system reinstallation is not helpful, it's probably a hardware problem, it would be better to check if it is the device itself problem.

  • After using external speakers headphone jack no longer works

Hi, i plugged in some external speakers yesterday, the type that have two channel inputs (red and white) from my headphone jack.  the speakers didnt seem to work, i thought it was the speakers that were broken, but now nothing will work from the headphone jack.  the computer recognises they are there but there is no sound at all apart from slight fuzziness.  it is nothing to do with the red light connection as ive had this problem before and its not that this time.  i have reset vram and done the SMC reset too, but none of this has worked.  the internal speakers work fine.  nothing is muted, nothing is unbalanced.  i have read everything single thread about similar problems and tried all the solutions i can find.  can anyone help!!??  :'.(

Replacing a faceplate on an 83xx device is not a simple operation.  It is not meant to be disassembled by the consumer.  This is a risk you take of disassembling a working device.  You may be able to disassemble and fix but there is no way for us to know whether you can fix it or not.

  • Sound output, comes out headphones AND internal speakers

I've had my refurbished PBG4 1.33 GHz for a few months and when I plug in headphones, the sound comes out the headphones AND the internal speakers of the laptop. I've tried messing w/ the System Prefs/Output with no luck whatsoever. Any suggestions, or anybody else have this problem at all? I've read threads here that have been similar but not quite this particular problem. I need the sound to ONLY come through the headphones when they are plugged in. Kinda defeats the purpose if sound still comes out the laptop internal speakers w/ headphones plugged in.

GO to System Preferences and open "sound".
In "Output" make sure you have selected "headphones" as the source.
In "Input" make sure you have selected "line in"
Also make sure your headphones are plugged into the correct socket. There are two. The one you should be using is the one nearest the front of the computer.

  • No sound with either headphones or internal speakers

I have no sound suddenly, with Itunes or CDs. Nothing from the headphones or the internal speakers. Mute is not on and Internal Speakers is selected for use of internal speakers. Has anyone else had this problem?

    Hi Nancy-
I have a 17" G4 1.5MHz aluminum PowerBook, 10.4.8, with no audio, too. Volume = max, System Prefs sound-in = internal mic, out = internal spkrs. Microphone shows no input. Connecting an iMic (w/external microphone) via USB causes sound-in pane to recognize the USB device, and both line-in and internal mic show a very regular pulse (about 1-2 per second) but no sign of any real audio from mic. Disconnecting the USB device, closing then reopening System Prefs sound pane, causes pulse to disappear.
Tried all the usual suspects: Zap PRAM, reset PMU, different login, even tried the Garage Band classical piano trick (play a few notes, audio might return), but nothing worked.
Machine was purchased in '04, well out of warranty. I found the sound board's flex cable had somehow popped loose; reseating that flex cable (next to hard drive) solved all audio issues since the sound card was essentially disconnected. (Taping it down might be a good idea.) Of course, this requires opening the machine.....
Connector might have been jarred loose from rough handling, I dunno. Might be worth checking.

  • Mac Pro Sleep/Headphone Jack Problem

    Hello!
Just finished setting up a shiny new Mac Pro 2,66 Ghz (stock config).
Reinstalled all my stuff and it is working fine, except for two things:
    1. If I put it to sleep, either via the Apple-Menu or the front button, the machine sleeps (light pulses on and off), but if I wake it up using the keyboard or the front button, I hear the startup chime and the machine starts up from scratch again. I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, but to no avail.
    2. I can not get the Headphone jack to work, it does not show up in the sound preferences, I only get to choose between internal speaker, Digital Out or LineOut.
    Any Tips for me?
    Bye, Frido.

    2. I can not get the Headphone jack to work, it does
not show up in the sound preferences, I only get to
choose between internal speaker, Digital Out or
    LineOut.
when you plug a headphone into the headphone jack,
the internal speaker turns off and you get sound
in the headphone instead. No need to change the choice.
