Headphone Jack Not Recognizing Devices

Just stepped up from an old G4 iMac 17" to an slightly newer intel iMac 17" and I'm missing my old
clear plastic "ball" speakers. There is a different type of jack on these than the 1/8" input on my new (older) iMac so I can't use them. The built in speakers just don't do it for me on this current machine.
So to get to my point, I tried plugging a pair of powered speakers into the headphone jack and they were not recognized in the sound control panel. Tried with headphones and same thing. Only "internal speakers" appears in the control panel. I asked someone at an Apple store about this and he told me to look for a red light inside the headphone jack. If I saw red then this most likely would mean the jack is fried. I checked and did NOT see any red light.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance !

Hi moJo
Sounds like a hardware problem with the Output jack, the sound card or that section of the logic board.
If you are stuck with that iMac for whatever reason, then your best bet might be to pick up a Griffin USB Audio Interface. > http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/

  • Satellite P75-A7200 headphone jack not recognized at all

    model number PSPLNU-00H004
i've tried updating all drivers etc, still will not pick up headphones when i plug them in. scanned for new devices in device manager and it just sees microphone and speakers, nothing else.
    any help would be appreciated

I am having a different headset related problem. the headset I am using is a turtle beach X12. the headset works like its supposed on every system I plug it into EXCEPT my new P75-A7200 with windows 8. the problem being very very low volume. this is a powered headset and even with the system volume at 100% and the headset volume at 100% all sounds are slightly above normal speaking volume. and if there is any backround noise at all I cant hear my game or movie at all.
I have gone through the system settings and made sure all volume setting were at thier max and still the volume is too low.
if I plug my headset in to any other system I own, be it my xbox 360 or my wifes laptop or even my desktop. I have to turn the system volume down. a LOT or risk having my ears blown out.
I'm hoping its just a software/driver issue and that its not because of a low cost cheaply made sound card.....

  • Headphone jack not working properly for Zen Mi

I wrote to tech support and I my only response from tech supports was to just do a recovery of the Zen Micro. The thing is, this problem isn't a software issue but an actual physical issue. Could it have been damaged because I constantly swap my headphones when I'm out walking or the FM receiver while I'm in my car. This is like the first time I've ever had a problem with the headphone jack for any device, whether it be a cassette walkman, CD player, Game Boy. The situation is like this, if I plug something in to the jack, sometimes the sound output is fine, but just a slight touch or jiggle and the sound gets distorted. This is rather annoying if the player is in my pocket and the sound will constant distort because its in my pocket. Is there a way to fix this? It seems so minute but if I can't listen to my songs properly what good is the player?

I know your new but I thought I would remind you to do a serach about the topic you did. Like my oleder post (still on this page) will tell you some fixes. Try http://forums.creative.com/creativel...ssage.id=34355 and that should work for you if you just put the headphones in the spot it works and hot glue around the hole it should work or you can use a gel super glue which seems to work just as well as the hot glue BUT do not use liquid superglue that could really mess up your device with a liquid.~Derek

  • My headphones are not recognized by the headphone jack.

This is an extremely chronic problem that I am getting very furstrated with and I would like it to be resolved soon.
    Problem:
My speakers work perfectly fine, the problem is when my headphones are plugged in.
What happens when I plug my headphones in:
No sound comes out of them.
The little speaker icon on the top of the screen next to the battery charge and the internet signal turns grey.
When I press the volume buttons (F11 and F12), the speaker icon comes up on the screen, but the volume does not change and there is a small circle icon with a side slash through it.
In system /preferences/sound it doesn't say headphones, but it says digital out.
I have tried to resolve the issue multiple times by calling AppleCare and going into the Genius Bar.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME. I WILL BE ETERNALLY INDEBTED TO YOU.
This is what has been done:
First time: The Genius plugged his headphones into the computer and it miraculously started working, then it stopped working when I got home.
Second time: A new logic board was put in the computer, three weeks later it stopped working.
I called AppleCare yesterday, the technician had me delete two files that started with com.apple... then reset the PRAM, it worked for half an hour, then it stopped.
I called AppleCare again today, but I was  told to just plug the headphones in and out to toggle the switch in the headphone jack. It didn't do anything. Also, what is the purpose of that switch in the headphone jack?
The only time I have seen that red light being emitted was when it stopped working after the new logic board was installed. A red light was emitted from the jack when the headphones were removed for about an hour. Then it started working for 20 minutes, then it stopped, and no red light was being emitted anymore.

Try restart your iPhone before connecting. It can solve many problems.

  • Audio jack not recognizing head phones

Just bought a new satellite, model C55-B5200. Long story short, the audio jack is not recognizing when headphones are plugged into it.
I have checked to make sure the speakers are enabled; they work fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled the realtek driver from the toshiba model page (2014-04-07 | Version: 6.0.1.7195 ) and am at a loss as where to go next.
    Any suggestions are appreciated!

When you run the Windows Sound applet (enter 'sound' from the Start screen and select 'Settings') does the 'Playback' tab show any indication of headphones?
If you can select a Headphones device from the Playback tab, click the Properties button and check to make sure 'Device usage' is set to 'Use this device (enable)'.

  • IPhone 4 headphone jack not working right.

So the headphone jack in my iPhone 4 i don't think is working properly. The right headphone does not put as much sound out as the left. I'm not sure why it was working perfectly just yesterday. I haven't dropped it or got water in it or anything. I tried plugging it in and unplugging it a few times, i reset my phone, turned it off then on and nothing seems to be working. Its not on silent and the volume thing is centered. Idk what could e happening. Help!!!

I would test the headset in another device such as a computer
and test another 3.5mm minijack headset in the phone to tell if it's the phone or headset

  • Headphone jack not working on new Macbook Pro what is causing this?

My 17 inch Macbook Pro is less than two weeks old. The headphone jack does not recognize the headphones about half the time. This occurs with several pairs of headphones and yes, they are ther right size. This is really frustrating on a brand new 3500 dollar machine. What is causing this? It almost seems as if the headphones cannot make contact due to the fact that the connection is too far recessed. I don't live near an Apple store so dealing with this is going to be a P.I.T.A. Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this issue? Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I didn't have a red light emitting from the jack. I had already checked in the sound preferences to make sure the settings were correct. The headphones were not being recognized. This was not working with several differing sets of headphones. I made a phone appt. with Applecare. The laptop PRAM was reset and it works. There is still a bit of a delay when I plug in the headphones before they are recognized and I do feel the port is just a bit "off" as the no headphones plug all the way in. They seem to just sit almost flush but, not quite. However, resetting it resolved the issue to a satifactory level. Applecare said the issue was that not enough power was getting to that function on my laptop. They gave me the case number and I can use it if I have any further problem when I take the laptop in with me to any Apple service center. I was quite satisfied with how this was handled by Apple and if I have anymore issues will follow up.
I love  this laptop but, even though this is working now I do feel that port is somewhat recessed a bit much.
I also want to add that this is my first Mac and despite having had this issue I was extremely impressed with the Applecare call that I got to help resolve this. One of the reasons I went with a Mac was the reputation for service Apple has. I was fed up with Sony to the hilt. I was glad I went with this Mac despite the headphone issue because had I still been with Sony, I'd have been give a major run around to deal with this issue. So far, Apple has tried everything possible to help me with this and assured me should I have any further issue they will immediately resolve it or give me a new machine. WAY better than dealing with Sony! I do not regret going with this MAC headphone issue or not!

  • Headphone jack not working

Have had external speakers connected to headphone jack for over a year now, worked flawlessly.
Upgraded to Lion one month ago.
Unplugged cord going to external speakers to plug in some headphones.  Headphones worked fine.  Unplugged headphones, plugged in external speakers (back to orignal setup.)
There is no signal to external speakers now.  I've tested them with an iPod, the cord and speakers work fine when connected to any other device.  The speakers will not work when connected to my iMac.
I've checked the Audio Out in Settings.  When I connect the speakers, it switches from internal speakers to digital out.
Any ideas or does anyone know about how much will this cost me to fix?  My warranty expired in Sept.
    Thanks.

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset, it's possible you may need to do each reset 2x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Headphone jack not working iMac 10.5.8

While playing to the headphones the plug was pulled out of the headphone jack.
Sound plays through the external speakers but when the headphones are plugged in they are not recognized.
Tried a different pair of headphones and they did not work.
Both sets of headphones do work on another computer.
Reset the PRAM but still no recognition of headphones.
Plugged headphones in and opened the sound preferences.
The only choice is internal speakers and there is not a place to change the setting to audio output.
Restarted the machine with the headphones plugged in but still no recognition.
Any other ideas before I decide it's just a bad jack?

Sounds like the headphone port is damaged. Some USB audio solutions exist for the Mac.  You may want to research those over trying to fix the soundboard.

  • External headphone jack not working correctly

I bought a new MBP before Christmas and am now having an intermittent problem with the headphone jack. I have external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. They've been working great. Yesterday, they stopped working and the speakers in my external display started working. I unplugged, replugged, the external speakers with no result. I checked the sound tab in system preferences but the external speakers don't show up. Earlier today the external speakers started working again. I had some weird switching of audio from left to right channel in the speakers and then again they turned off. I try the external speakers with my ipod and they work fine. I plugged other external speakers or ipod headphones in the computer and they don't work and aren't recognized in system preferences. Does my computer need a trip to the repair shop already? Note: I also hear occasional "pops" through the external speakers. This never happened with these speakers before. I used to use them with a Windows machine I just replaced. Please help!

I have this same exact problem.
Did the repair solve the problem?
I have a wedding band and used my old MacBook to play music during the band breaks. I haven't used the MacBook Pro yet since I just bought it, but now I'm not so sure I will. I can't only imagine what type of catastrophe it would be if I had a dance floor packed full of people and the MacBook Pro decides to play through the internal speakers only.

  • Headphone jack not working in Windows Vista!!!

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch running Mac OSX 10.5 leopard. I recently installed Windows Vista through boot camp and have been experiencing some problems. I have installed all of the drivers from the OSX installer DVD (or so it seems) just like your supposed to, but my headphone jack will not work! I have tried several kinds of headphones and speakers, but no matter what I do, sound only plays through the built-in speakers. Note that the jack works perfectly when Im on the Mac OSX side. Anyone know how to fix this???

No matter what Mac, for sound, all Apple does is 'create' or enable the device, Boot Camp doesn't include full sound driver support, for that you need to manually install/update using the proper device chipset driver (Cirrus, Realtek, etc).

  • Satellite Pro A200-18P - microphone / headphone jack not working with Vista

    Hi,
I have installed Windows Vista onto this laptop which was originally an XP, but I have not got the headphone jack working.
How do I turn it on or do I have to download it from toshiba website?

    Hi
First of all you have to check if there is an special BIOS for Vista.
As far as I know some A200 series needs BIOS which was released especially for Vista OS.
I think the notebook needs Realtek sound driver.
Therefore in control panel you should see the Realtek HD audio manager.
Go there and you will see the mic and headphone jack on the right.
Click right there and check if there are some settings which have to be enabled.

  • Headphone Jack Not Working Macbook Pro Mid 2012 Running Yosemite

    Hey everyone,
I have a Mid 2012 MBP. Just updated to OS X 10.10 and used the headphone jack to connect my external speakers for the first time today. Had no problems t first, but after about 2 hours of using the headphone jack the sound started cutting in and out then about 10 minutes later, they just stopped working all together. Audio works just fine with out them plugged in. Also the sound is cutting in and out using the built in speakers also.
I have Bootcamp(windows 8.1) and I have the same problem when using Windows also. Sounds like a hardware problem but im hopping its not cuz I dont have the warranty anymore(obviously).
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222?viewlocale=en_US
When it is not working, look inside the audio output port.  See if there is a red light.  If so, the internal switch is stuck and the jack may free it if inserted a few times.
If none of the above solves the problem, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

  • Ipod touch 5 headphone jack not working please help?

I have tried with multiple pairs of earbuds/ headphones. Either there will be audio in the left, or right, but usually never at the same time unless you twiddle with the headphone plug in. Sometimes there's no audio. I only got the ipod in December, so naturally I'm concerned that there's a problem.
If anyone has experienced anything like this, your help would be greatly appreicated. Also any help on how to fix it/ what I should do about it would be further appreicated.
    Thanks so much!!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack. If the iPod is defective and not abused Apple will exchange it at no cost
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

  • G710 headphone jack not working

    Hi,
the headphone jack on my G710 does not seem to be working.
I tried two different headphones, no luck.  I get a message "jack is now plugged in", the speakers turn off but no audio in the headphones.
Latest driver (win 8.1 64) has been installed and the same problem exists in Linux, which I am dual booting.

Quick update: Got it working in Linux so it must be a Windows specific software issue.
