Headphone work speaker doesn't

My speakerphone, music, alarm, and ringer don't work. Speaker plays for a couple seconds then cuts out. Doesn't work 98% of the time. Headphones still work. I tried cleaning out the headphone jack, putting the headphones in and out several times. Nothing. Any ideas?

Headphone works, microphone doesn't

I have gone through probably 5 pairs of Cyber Acoustic headphones. The first two worked fine, at the beginning and then in relatively short order, the microphone stopped working (due to no mishandling on my part). The company has been quite kind in sending me new pairs to try, but now all the new sets they've sent don't work from the start.I don't have the model number handy, but these retail for about $20, and I bought them off the shelf at a Staples store.
I should add that I can stick a just a simple external microphone into the mic input jack and it works.
I'm wondering if this could possible be an impedance problem and I'm just chasing a wild goose in trying to find a pair of this particular headphone to work. But then why would that be? The same pair that didnt work on the MacBook Pro is working just fine on a Dell PC/Windows.

Yes, as I said in the original question, I have an external microphone (and not just those cheap plastic things that come with computers, but one I paid around $30 for) that works on the MacBook Pro. I should add that when I tried to work it so that I used the cyberacoustic headphones, and this external mic I couldn't get it to work. I should also add that I'm mainly trying to get this to work on Skype (and yes I have had that configured correctly.
I appreciate being pointed to this optical thing, but I've never noticed such an option and I certainly don't see any light anywhere, certainly not at the input. So, not sure how to look into that possibility. But thanks just the same.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP 1000-1609au Notebook PC and sound not working correctly with headphones. Here is a fix that has helped.
1. Right click speaker icon (right hand corner)
2. Select Playback devices
3. Right click Speakers
4. Enable it and set as Default
5. Click Apply/Ok

Speaker doesn't work on ipod 5th generation. Why?

Just received a 5th generation ipod touch and the external speaker doesn't work. There are plenty of inaccurate answers on many sites. Am I overlooking something in the setup of the device or does this mean a trip to the Apple Store while on vacation?

There are not settings.
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

Make sure the silent switch is not set to mute. If you can see the red dot, it is on mute.
It may think you have headphones plugged in, try plugging and unplugging a wired headset a few time.
The next step would be to restore as new.
If none of that works, a warranty exchange would be the resolution.

I have a iPhone 4s and my speaker doesn't work! someone can help to fix it?

With thousands of inquiries with similar experience reviewed on discussion boards, and after trying most of the 'fixes', I was prepared for my encounter with the nearest genius bar, 210 miles from my home. No acknowledgement of a problem with the OS, but the genius zeroed in on data corruption after performing a diagnostic exam of my iPhone 4S, finding corrupted data and a few error messages. He was able to discuss probable causes with me that made sense and replace my iPhone with a remanufactured one which we were able to activate while in the store, restoring from iCloud. No charge (out of warranty - no extra AppleCare). This has resulted in full return to function which has lasted 48 hours to date. I had been on a trip to Alaska (in March) where I had plugged in headphones, repeatedly switched iPhone on and off, used Airplane mode repeatedly and updated to 6.1.2. The iPhone was not dropped or plunged in water or snow - just subjected to normal use with some 10 degree F weather exposure episodes. In retrospect, I would have liked a printout of the error messages the genius found while performing the diagnostic tests. Apple still rocks for me.

IPod Touch: Internal Speaker doesn't work

My iPod Touch was replaced ~6 months ago bec. the internal speaker was bad. This new one, though, the internal speaker doesn't work at all (except for the Clock/Alarm tones). The vol. button says "Headphones" on screen when you change the volume, whether or not the Headphones are plugged in. I've tried turning off and other things I've seen but no clear answer. Is there a fix for this?

Have you tried restoring it?
Can be a Hardware problem, go to the nearest Apple Store and see if they can fix it

If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. Could be a bad headphone jack.

Thanks for your solution, it wasn't quite what solved the problem but i remembered that i had a bit of salt water on my phone recently and spraying the charging port with an anti-oxide spray solved my problem, do you mind if i ask, how is the charging port related with the volume or/and speakers?

Do you have the mute switch on? Next to volume buttons - shows orange when mute is on. Other than that just making sure the volume is turned up. It should work.

There are numerous reports of this issue happening on iPhones. It may be a glitch that will need a new update. Some find that a full shut-down and restart fixes that problem, but not always.

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Suddenly my iphone5 speaker stopped working. No updates, no water, no fall. My headphones work and the bar of the music goes up and down.

Also when I plug in my iPhone to a jack that uses a power amp like external speakers it works fine. I have no idea whats going on i've restored it twice and still nothing.
