Headphones are quiet when plugged in.

I have a Spectre xt TouchSmart PC that has Windows 8 installed. When I play sound with no headphones, it is as normal. But as soon as I plug in the headphones, the sound it MUCH quieter. You can hardly hear it when you turn it to 100%. This was not like this yesterday and I cannot think of anything I did to the computer other than installing Ubuntu on an external drive. I tried reinstalling the audio drivers and rebooting many times and deleting the audio drivers and redownloading them.
While the headphones are plugged in, I get this: http://screencast.com/t/fLIWqESO
And when they are unplugged: http://screencast.com/t/xJL5WU7w
When I try to set the "Communications Headphones" as the Default Device, it does nothing. I also have Beats Audio with the little Beats icon on my built in speakers. With the "Beats Audio Control Panel" open, it shows this: http://screencast.com/t/cTSkkwi5qTg
Thanks!

I fixed it. I think what I did was to reboot and run the pre-BIOS diagnostic utilities. That seemed to fix it...

  • TS1630 My iPhone 4 says the headphones are in when they are not. I am not getting any sound from the speaker. Nothing appears to be in the headphone jack.  Any ideas anyone?

My iPhone 4S  has no sound through the speaker generally, although the speakerphone does work.  It is indicating that headphones are in, when they are not.  Nothing appears to be in the headphone jack.  Resetting the phone has not resolved the problem.  any ideas what could be wrong?

This just happened to my brand new iPhone5. I tried turning all the way off and then on AND plugging and unplugging. Only to discover that simply connecting to the charger worked!!!
    Very frustrating though!!

  • Headphones Not Recognized When Plugged in, Internal Speakers Won't Mute

Hi all, I've scoured these message boards looking for a solution to this problem, but couldn't find a solution that worked.  Hopefully someone can!
    Toshiba Satellite C655-S5312
Edition: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) CPU B950@ 2.10GHZ
    Installed Memory: 4.00 GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
The problem I'm having is that my computer won't recognize my headphones or any other external audio device when I plug them in. The internal speakers continue to play no matter what. I used the jack fine one night and the next morning it wasn't working. I've checked these external devices with other computers and they work fine.  My computer is just over a year old and no longer under warranty, but I can't imagine it being a hardware issue after such a short time of use.    I had this problem before right after I got my computer back from a repair shop.  Turns out the guy didn't reinstall my drivers.  Now, when I tried to follow those same steps, I'm getting nowhere.  I can say that I noticed that the available drivers on the Toshiba website have changed.  Before it was RealTek and now, after updates, it' was SmartAudioHD and now High Definition Audio Device.  I don't know if that bears any significance, but I thought I'd include that anyway.  I've tried uninstalling the driver, but everytime I restart my computer it's there under Audio Device Manager.  Tech Support said that my comp automatically adds the driver so I'll never really get rid of it.  Does that make sense?
    Troubleshooting steps so far:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall drivers (restarted my computer after)
2.)  Control Panel--->  Device Manager---> Sound, Video Games and Game Controllers---> High Definition Audio Device (was SmartAudio before updating driver during troubleshooting)---->right click and "Enable" is checked
3.)  Control Panel---> Sound---> Playback Tab (in Sound Dialog Box)---> Speakers (HDAD) green check mark but Headphones (HDAD) red downward arrow and "Not Plugged In" (Can enable or test because it's not detected)
Am I missing a driver?  Am I missing a vital step?  Please someone help me!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are using Windows 7, go into control panel click on sounds and make headphones default. When you are not using your headphones you will have to do this procedure again to restore speakers on the laptop or computer. I am using Microsoft Gaming Headphones and had to do this because my toshiba laptop did not recognize it was plugged into the USB port. I have no problems with the plain speaker headphones only the ones that plug into the usb port.

  • Why does my Ipad say headphones are connected when they are not?

I do not have sound on my iPad1. When I try to turn up the volum it indicates headphones are connected, but they are not. When I do use headphones they do work. I have rebooted the iPad, reset and restored the iPad and the issue still exists. Is this a straight hardware problem?

iPad has a mechanical switch inside the jack so it knows when the headphones are plugged in.
    It may be stuck.
Inspect it to see if something is in there, such as toe jam.
Blow the port out with compressed air.
Try inserting and removing a headphone plug several times.

  • Ipod nano plays with headphones but not when plugged in to player

I have a nano 16gb 4th or 5th generation.  It has worked fine up until about a week ago.  It works if I plug in the headphones, but not when it is plugged into the car stereo or an iHome.  Any thoughts?

    If:
-you and your husband have the same generation iPod nano
-they both have the same latest software
-you tried the car stereo with the same iPod charging cord.
(with 32 pins connector I just wanted to make sure it is not the headphone plug)
this means that the problem is indeed with your iPod nano.
Since you also said that before last week everything worked fine, something must've gone wrong after that.
This could be software-related or hardware-related. Did you try to connect it to your computer? Does the computer recognise it? Can you still charge it?
If the computer does recognise the iPod it might be a good idea to 'repair' your iPod via iTunes.
Or try the Five R's: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano5gen/# (more or less the same for 4th and 5th gen)
If your computer does not recognise it, it probably needs to be repaired. But since it is 4th or 5th generation I guess the warranty is void already, and you'll have to decide how much this is worth to you or if you wouldn't want to buy a new one.

  • Itouch thinks headphones are connected when they aren't

My itouch (2nd gen)connects well to headphones, but when I remove the headphones it thinks they are still connected. I've tried restarting, resetting, and restoring already. The volume control buttons work, but come up saying there are headphones in when there aren't. The headphone jack is clean too. Anyone have any ideas???

I have the same problem. Have tried inserting removing headphones multiple times, looking for debris, the water damage indicator is still white, reboot, restore, etc. Still the iPod thinks that the headphones are always attached when they are not.
This is very frustrating, as it seems many are having this same issue. My iPod Touch is just a little over a year old, and I have taken care of it. It's disappointing that the answer seems to be bad hardware on Apples part.

  • My iPhone shows that headphones are attached when they aren't. what do I do?

My iPhone shows that the headphones are attched. They aren't. So it doesn't play music on the speaker, I can't make a phonecall without plugging the handsfree. I tried plugging-unplugging the headphones more than several times, there's still nothing. Can anyone suggest something please?
    Bart

Look in the headphone hole for lint or other debris. If there is
    obstruction, clear it out.
Plug your headphones in and remove them repeatedly.
Reset the iPhone: hold down home button and sleep button
until Apple logo appears - no data will be lost.

  • Headphones sound weird when plugged into iPod

So i was listening to my ipod one day, and all of a sudden when a song came, the vocals sounds really low. I tried the headphones on my computer, and through the stero, and even on another iPod, and they sounded fine. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Could it be some kind of problem in the iPod itself that makes it sound differen? It plays and sounds fine when i play it from the sound stage i have. Can someone please help me?

I'm having the same exact problem. Please call Apple Tech Support to report this. When I talked to them, they told me that only one other person had posted about this on their boards.
    Thanks!

  • My i phone is stuck in headddddphone mode ane headphones are not plugged iin

my phone is stuck  in headphone mode and the headphones are not plugged in

Try inserting and removing the headphones several times in a row to release the mechanism that is stuck indicating the headphones are inserted when they are not.

  • My phone is stuck in headphone mode even though the headphones are not attached to the phone.  How do I fix this?

I am trying to raise the volume on my phone, but it is saying that the headphones are attached when they are not attached.  How do I fix this?

I tried everything there was. I tried to plug and unplug, I tried to clean it and dry it, and I really didn't want to put my phone in a bag of rice for 12 or 24 hours because I wasn't very patient. So what I did was; I put my phone on headphone mode and put it on airplane mode, then I left it there for 5 minutes and turned airplane mode off and it was working!!!! Hope this helped.

  • My ipod 5th gen won't change volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can change the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

My ipod 5th gen won't let me adjust volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can adjust the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

  • I recently repaired disk permissions on my mac HD and now my on-board speakers wont work, the icon is greyed out and only works when my headphones are plugged in.

I recently repaired disk permissions on my mac HD and now my on-board speakers wont work, the icon is greyed out and only works when my headphones are plugged in

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

  • I have lost sound on my iPad in apps unless I use headphones ,does anyone know how to get sound back without them .I have used the mute volume on the bar at bottom of screen and the slider volume control there only shows when headphones are plugged in !

I have lost sound on my iPad in apps unless I use headphones ,does anyone know how to get sound back without them .I have used the mute volume on the bar at bottom of screen and the slider volume control there only shows when headphones are plugged in !
I also tried resetting settings all to no avail ...I looked up some advice and watched utube video advice on how to fix without success..
The volume control button on side does not work ,I got the iPad last August and wonder if it is a fault that means I must return it for replacement from where it was purchased ?

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

  • IPod nano 6th gen (brand new) doesn't recognize when headphones are plugged in

I have a brand new iPod nano (6th gen), and it doesn't detect when headphones are plugged in. I have read that the problem can ocurr because the headphones are not correctly inserted (which is not the case.. i'm absolutely sure about this) or that the headphone jack has dust inside (which is also not the case, since it is brand new).
    This is what happens:
When i play a song, and then press the sleep/wake button to turn off the display, the music stops. Or if i let the music play, it stops when the screen times out and turns off. These two things occur because the ipod "thinks" that there are no headphones inserted.
When i try to activate the FM radio, the radio won't start because it says that there is no radio signal (which occurs when no headphones are connected).
Needless to say, the microphone and volume controls of the iphone headset, don´t work at all (they even work on the ipod shuffle!).. and because of this, no voice recording for me!
It's a shame, because the FM radio is completely useless, and music playing only works by activating the "double click to play" option in the settings menu.. but it is somewhat cumbersome the process of "play music - turn off the screen - double click to resume playing" every time I select a song.
The headphone detection has only worked randomly when the ipod is connected to the computer, but i haven't been able to figure out under what conditions this occurs. I have read about this issue, and I only would like to know if this is a firmware bug of the 1.2 version. I tried unsuccesfully to downgrade the firmware to the 1.1 version (maybe because the ipod shipped with the 1.2 version).
I have also restored the device in itunes, with no luck.....
Thanks in advance for any useful answer!

    Thanks for your answer...
The headphones that i'm using, are the ones that were included with the iphone 4 (so, they are original).. however this shouldn't be a problem, as the ipod should work fine with whatever headphones i choose to use (sound quality will vary, of course).
The ipod does the same with the headphones that were included in the box, and with every pair of headphones i have used to test, so i'm certain that the ipod has an issue.
I hope that the picture is clear enough.. here you can see that the headphones are fully inserted, and the ipod is not recognizing them.

  • Speakers only play when headphones are plugged in.

My internal speakers only play when the headphones are plugged in. (System preferences-Sound tells me I'm using Internal Speakers, audio port for sound input).  When I remove the headphones, the red light in the jack goes on and the computer says I'm using Digital Out ("The selected device has no output controls.)
I have read many community responses, most saying that the switch inside the headphone jack hasn't engaged, that I should fiddle with it using a paperclip/bobbypin/toothpick or just plug-in and unplug headphones repeatedly.  I have repeatedly both of these to no avail.  When fiddling, I don't really know which bump inside there is the switch, I've played with them all.
No, it's not dirty, I've blowin air, vaccuumed, dusted. Same problem.
I do use my speakers often for work and pleasure, go between different external speakers and a projector.
It seems that the computer has things backwards- headphones unplugged is pluged and vice versa.
Any suggestions or clear guidance as to what I should be fiddling with when I stick a bobby pin in there?  No need to refer me to old posts, I've read them.
    Thanks in advance,
    TheKip

If your phone is still under warranty, Apple will service your phone for free.
Did you check the headphone port for any kind of debris or lint?
Did you already try another set of headphones? Are you suing the headphones that came with the phone?
Is the headphone jack plugged in fully into the headphone port?
