Headphones stopped working.

Hi, first of all, let me say that this is my very first mac and this is becoming very disappointing. I've had this Macbook Pro for all of a few hours, set up and everything went fine. After all was said and done I decided to listen to a podcast with my headphones on, halfway through the audio just blinks out and goes to the main speakers and since then I can't get any of my headphones to work. I've checked everything I could think of, I've tested this problem with multiple headphones and none are picked up by OS X when I plug them in. With all that said, I'm still a very new user and could be doing something obviously wrong. Please tell me I won't have to return this within hours of opening it. All mics I have tested have used the audio port, not the USB port.

Take a look at the inside of the headphone jack (on the computer). Do you see a red light on? (Try doing this in a dimly lit room)
If you do have a red light visible then the jack has stuck in 'optical out' mode. This will need to be repaired.
If there is no red light then the actual jack port itself may have died, also will require a repair.
Unfortunate really because no matter what it does look like it will be a repair. (The actual headphone jack is soldered directly to the logic board so they will probably order a new logic board for you)
Good luck, post back with any findings

  • Weird sound issue. Windows sound splitting into two volume sliders and headphones stop working

So I am a network admin thus I am not exactly computer illiterate.
Normally my latop has one volume slider for Speakers and Headphones, however when exiting a game or unplugging/plugging in a usb device windows will suddenly split volume into two seperate sliders for speakers and headphones, it isnt doing it right this second, but it looks like it thinks my headphones are a headset when this happens.
After this happens my headphones stop working completely and only speakers work. To get sound back to normal I have to reset the computer, after I reboot everything is fine and it goes back to one  volume slider. I am using a normal set of headphones no mic, no bluetooth.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Headphones stop working after a certain time and the notification for sound change has disappeared

    HP Pavilion dv6-6176sa
    Win7 64bit.
I have a Pavilion dv6, and occasionally no sound will go through headphones when the jack is plugged in. The headphones themselves are not at fault, they are brand new and work fine.
When the headphones are plugged in, the sound will only go through the laptop speakers. I've tried updating the drivers, fiddling with the jack and socket (as I read on google), the only resolution I have found is to restart the comp, which is a bit of a pisstake in all fairness and I'd rather not do that every time it happens.
5 minutes ago I was watching a TV show, listening through the headphones, when I pulled out my USB mouse (and accidentally the charger with it). The sound then switched from the headphones to the speaker.
If I open the sound settings, it will display the headphones as being plugged in, but the sound indicator bar (thingy) will only rise and fall on the speaker icon bar.
Currently I have the audio jack pulled out about a centimetre, this allows sound through the headphones, but the sound is noticeably different to what it should be.
I had rolled it back to "High Definition Audio Device", then reinstalled it to the most current driver. This hasn't fixed it.
Also, this may be a related issue: (I guess) around the same time, the beats audio notification that pops up on screen when the volume is changed  has disappeared and doesn't display when the volume has changed.
In microsoft sound control panel, it has the default speakers and the headphone logo, when i plug in the jack, a green phone circle thing appears by the headphone option, meaning it works i guess. However, the description changes from "ready" to "default communications device" and nothing changes for the regular speaker device.
When I go to >configure, and test each (L/R) speaker, if the headphones are plugged in, the noise is louder then when they're not plugged it
But yeah, brand new headphones, brand new laptop, it's mad. What's madder is that the headphones will work for x amount of time, then stop working when I next try to use them...

  • T420 - External Micrphone (headphone) stopped working

    Hi,
I´ve been using my headphones with an incorporated microphone  (as the ones you use on your cellphone) as both headphone and microphone for the last two years,
Suddenly, the microphone stopped working (the sound still works).
    - I´ve tried with two other headphones, different brands.
    - I´ve of course restarted the computer and checked all the settings.
I use this computer for work, therefore a lot of conference video calls.
    What´s teh solution?
I do refuse to buy an adapter or get an USB microphone, they are way too uncomfortable.
    Thank you,

It turns out it was a combination of bad front audio jack and headphones.
Headphones #1 had the problem with front and rear jacks, headphones #2 work only in the rear jack, not the front. Yeesh.
    Thanks for your help.
If you have used a known good set of headphones and
still have this problem, it is most likely the jack
    on the Mac itself.
You may be able to hear something out of the speaker
jack on the back to see if that works. Maybe a cheap
pair of speakers for troubleshooting, although if you
can get some sound out of the heaadphones that would
help. That way you can narrow it down to the jack.
    Luck-

  • Bluetooth Headphones Stop working after reboot or power cycle

I have some Insignia NS-BTHDP blue tooth headphones and whenever I restart my Imac or turn off my headphones they stop working. They still connect and the my Imac acts like it is using them for audio output but no sound ever comes from them. I have to remove the device and re-add it to make them work again.
I have seen other people with this issue but never a solution to it.

Thank you for your reply.  Do I use one of those bottled air cans to blow out any dirt?  Also I have used two different sets of earphones, one (Sony) has 2 rings and the other (Apple) has 3 rings.  Thank you again for your advice.

  • Speaker and headphones stop working on mac book pro?

Why does my speaker and headphones randomly stop working on my mac book pro? It wont work again until I restart my computer.

What model identifier is your MacBook Pro? To see this, hold the Option key and choose "System Information" from the Apple menu, and then click "Hardware" (this should be selected by defualt) followed by noting the Model Identifier which should be something like "MacBookPro6,2."
Does the system properly wake from sleep if you boot it to Safe Mode (hold the Shift key at startup to do this)?

  • In ear headphones stopped working from one ear?

I've recently purchased a pair of in-ear headphones for my iPhone. About 2 weeks later (now) one side (the right side) has stopped working. Amazingly, that's also where the remote is but it does work, the actual earbud doesn't though. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the jack, since this happens with my TV when I plug them in, too. I'm also wondering if I can get it replaced by Apple and what I would need to take to them to get it replaced if so. Thanks, help is appreciated. (:

Just make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and take the headset in.

  • Wired Headphones stopped working

Anybody having problems wired headset ( Klipsch SA4 or Scosche IDR-653md) that have volume and track control plus mike to answer phone. I have the Scosche headphones and they worked fine until ICS. Now when the screen goes blank the button stops working. Volume still works, but the button doesn't.

  • Headphones stop working after awhile.

I have a 2009 Macbook.  The headphones will work for awhile then just stop working.  After I reboot they work again for a short period then stop working again.  I have  tried several different headphones and they all do the same thing.  Help.

Thank you for your reply.  Do I use one of those bottled air cans to blow out any dirt?  Also I have used two different sets of earphones, one (Sony) has 2 rings and the other (Apple) has 3 rings.  Thank you again for your advice.

  • Headphones stopped working after update, sound only on left side.

I have a good set of Bose headphones that have worked great for my MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPod. I noticed after I updated the software for my MBP, sound would only come out of the left side of the headphones. I checked for mono vs. stereo, balance, all the other stuff I could find, but had no luck in finding a fix. I gave up and just used the headphones for with my iPhone and iPad...until I updated those to iOS 8.2 and the same problem happened: sound only through the left side. The headphones still work with other non-Apple devices and even with other apple devices not upgraded to the most recent OS.
Any suggestions on how to fix? Not a fan of my $200+ headphones being useless now just because of a software update.

    Try a NVRAM reset:

    Ciao.

  • Immediately after latest ios7 update, the buttons on all of my headphones stop working on my iPhone 5. They all work on my iPod 4 though. So why are they no longer working on my iPhone?

I have three set of earbud, two that came from Apple and one pair from Yurbuds, all with 3-button inline microphones. All worked properly prior to the most recent iOS update and all still work properly on my iPod 4. However, now with my iPhone 5, I can still listen to music on all three sets of earphones but the buttons no longer work. No volume up or down, no start or stop. Is this coincidental equipment failure, or could the iOS update have impacted the functionality of my headphone buttons? Also, the microphones still work too, just the buttons do not.

This response is a little late as I just read about your problem. I have a 2012 Dodge Charger and a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country and both worked flawlessly with the iPhone 5s my wife and I had. However, we just upgraded to the iPhone 6 and Uconnect will receive calls but you cannot answer them. You can callout successfully, however. the annoyance being the inability to answer incoming calls in the HandsFree mode.

  • Pavilion dv6 headphones stop working when certain programs launched

My pavilion dv6 (product number: A5F76AV; OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) is brand new, just arrived yesterday. On startup, the headphones work fine when watching videos online and for any other system audio, but when I launch a game (through steam) I no longer get audio through the headphones (system reverts back to playing audio through the onboard speakers). Once this happens, no audio comes through the headphones regardless of the source, although the volume coming from the onboard speakers changes somewhat when the headphones are plugged in and unplugged.
I've tried manually downloading and installing the audio driver for my computer by going through the HP support website, but doing so did not help. I would be extremely grateful for any help that can be offered.
    Thank you.

  • Bose MIE2i headphones stopped working with IOS5

They we're working just fine before the upgrade, now the volume and track choosing does not work, the music plays during phone calls  but the microphone works OK.  I don't think anyone will have an answer until Apple sorts out the software (but I am hoping)  but I have now lost heaps of the utility I need from the phone.

I eventually found the problem for me.  The Bose controls are very sensitive to moisture and it was sweat from wearing them in summer or down the gym that was causing the problem.  I took two pairs back under warranty but the third I have protected with a bit of cling wrap everytime I go to the gym.  It looks ugly, is really inconvenient etc but I dont think many headsets would have waterproof controls.
When moisture gets in them all the things described above happen, buttons dont work, voice control comes onrandomly, it dials out to numerous people in the address book (at 2am in the morning that leads to calls back from concerned friends).
    hope this helps.

  • My headphones have stopped working and I'm still under warranty but I've lost my reciept. But I still have the box to them. What can I do to get a replacement? Also I've only have had them since December

One of my headphone stopped working then the other one. From the question I was wondering if this matter could be resolved?

I've had Dell, HP, Gateway, IBM, Compaq, Lenova, and other computer manufacturer's send replacement drives to users as warranty replacements.  They normally take your credit card number so they can charge you if you don't return the defective part by a certain date.  I can't understand why Toshiba is so **bleep** about this.  I don't blame you for not wanting to send in your laptop to have the hard drive replaced under warranty.  Just get a Western Digital Scorpio Blue from Newegg, ZipZoomFly, or some other reputable online reseller and replace it yourself.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Remote on Headphones not working...and it isn't fluff

    Hi,
So today randomly the remote on my (latest Apple) headphones stopped working. As in it won't play, pause, skip, adjust the volume, or start voice control. I know it's not the "fluff" people on other threads have talked about swabbing out of your headphone jack because a) I tried that and b) the remote doesn't work on multiple devices I've use it with in the past. I don't know if this is related to the wire because I hear sound out of the right plug, but the remote on the right wire doesn't work. And this literally just happened today.
I bought an iPod touch 4G last September w/ Apple Care, and then bought the remote headphones for $30 from apple in February. Does the AppleCare cover these, even if I didn't buy them with the iPod? (probably not, stupid question). Can I swap these for new ones after 7 1/2 months? I'm not paying $30 AGAIN because the remote feature just stopped working one day, in the middle of a bunch of days of normal usage. And that feature is the reason I went and spent the $30.
Any suggestions? Any policy/warranty stuff? Anything will be appreciated since I use the play/pause/volume buttons pretty much every day.
    Thanks!
    Jake

I would bring them into your local Apple Store/Genius Bar and demonstrate this issue to them.  The headphones should still be covered under the 1 year warranty against manufacturer defects meaning Apple should swap them out of for you.  Either way, a trip your local Apple Store would be your next best bet.
