Headroom Questions

Hey,
I've been reading a lot of discussions about headroom, and I'm hoping someone can clarify a couple things that are confusing me.
It seems the common wisdom is to leave about 6 db of headroom for peaks and 12 - 18 db for average signal level.
Here are my questions:
1. Is the -6 db peak level in reference to a recorded audio file? In other words, if I put an audio file on a track in a Logic Project, and insert only a Level Meter on the channel strip, and look at the Peak and RMS levels of the Level Meter, ideally the Peak should be roughly - 6 db and the RMS signal should be -12 to -18?
2. Assuming the answer to #1 is yes: I don't quite understand this, in that, if the peaks of the audio file are 6 db below the max level, what is the headroom for? "inter-sample" peaks? I realize this may be a dumb question, if so, sorry!
3. Assuming again that the answer to #1 is yes: Does this apply to ANY audio file, including a pre-mastered stereo mix of a song? Because, I thought that when you do your final (pre-mastering) mix, you should try to get Output 1-2 level meter to be as close to 0 as possible, which I found results in the peaks in the mix's audio file being close to zero. Am I missing something?
Thanks.

This is a very complex subject but basically resolves around how sample value(s) are handled inside a computer.
One crucial thing to remember is that when you are looking at a meter in Logic (or any DAW) you are not seeing a level, you are seeing a sample value which is representing a level. It has nothing whatsoever to do with volume.
Once a signal passes through your A/D and is inside your computer it is nothing but a string of 1's and 0's. There is no sound inside your computer, there is only maths. A single track by itself really presents no problem but it is rare that a song you are recording is going to be a single track. As you add tracks these sample values get added together, you may have come across the term 'summing'. Summing is exactly what it says, it adds these numbers together.
The internal mix engine in Logic will give you phenomenal headroom but we must remember that this needs to come back out into the real world, out of our D/A so we can hear it and play it. Very, very simplistically, what a computer does when a number is too big it will truncate it. Keeping your tracking levels lower (the -6db for peaks is cool, at 24bit it isn't harmful to take that to -12) will give the summing engine room so that nothing is truncated when coming back into the real world.
I like this question as it is an engineering question. When I started with tape we had to learn how to align the machines, de-mag the heads, clean the tape path, what tape had what tolerances and how hard we could hit certain tape brands to get a good sound. Now things have moved on but there is a new set of rules to learn. This one is the most crucial, I find.
You can experiment with levels, as I and many others have done and keeping tracking levels lower really does give a better sounding mix. As I said, this is a very simplistic explanation and you have to remember that plug-ins can clip too. Everything that you put onto a channel will 'add' to the numbers that the summing engine will need to process.
So, in your last question, a single track may not be clipping but 24 tracks all hitting -1, once summed with all manner of processing, will be way too hot.
Once you are finished and end up with a stereo song, you basically have 2 tracks in a single phase-locked stereo file. A mastering engineer will bring this 2 track recording up to a healthy level.
I hope this helps a little.

  • New 16:9 squeeze vs. 4:3 question (hopefully not a re-hash)

first of all, i did numerous searches to find the answer to this...couldn't find it. if this has BEEN answered before, please either answer again or direct me to the proper thread. please be kind. flaming is not necessary.
i work at a broadcast station. i am tasked to do a project that will be viewable in both 4:3 and 16:9. (we won't go into why. that's just the way it is.)
    i'm shooting with a dvx100a.
    from what i understand:
the only way to have one project do both of these is to shoot in 16:9 and export to dvd and the dvd player will know whether i have a 4:3 TV or a 16:9 TV and out put accordingly.
i don't have that option - it will be broacast, so as i understand it, i will have to create two projects, one 4:3 and one 16:9.
i have two questions but i guess the second is dependent on the answer to the first.
with 4:3 footage, importing to a 16:9 timeline, i zoom the footage to fill in the empty vertical space. the image is now distorted on a 4:3 set, but fine on a 16:9 set, as it should be. correct so far?
so, first question: if i import 16:9 footage into a 4:3 timeline, then zoom to fill in the empty horizontal space, will the image be fine on a 4:3 set and distorted on a 16:9 set?
    second question:
for 16:9, from all that i've read, it's better to shoot 4:3, where you won't loose resolution, import to 16:9 timeline and zoom (where some resolution will now be lost.
for 4:3, no problem, no resolution lost BUT: if i'm shooting only once, for both 4:3 and 16:9 viewing, then i have to frame the 4:3 for 16:9 while shooting. so when converted to 16:9 fine, good picture with framing. but with 4:3, more head room and bottom than i want. so the question is if i shoot in 4:3, framing for 16:9, but import to a 4:3 timeline for the 4:3 project, i will still have to zoom in to loose the excesive headroom, ergo, loss of resolution again.
so in this case, would it matter whether i shoot 4:3 or 16:9? the only problem i see shooting 16:9 for 4:3 is that first, i loose resolution shooting 16:9 to start with and then when i import the 16:9 to the 4:3 timeline and zoom in to fill the aspect ratio, i'm loosing even more resolution. does this sound right?
    anything i missed?
    thanks very much in advance
    carl

    HI Tom,
Thank you for your quick response. I did not think there was a way to modify geometry at ingest to fcp, but thought i would ask.
Actually, I would like to preserve HD resolution, but I need a 4:3 versus 16:9 aspect ratio - silent film look. Also, it will be important during editing to see the 4:3 image.
Output will be internet or projection at film festivals, etc.
Given that would you recommend simply trimming (cropping) pixels in fcp and then do the final transcode to my output format after edit or doing another ProRes 422 transcode to get to 4:3 right off the bat?
Also, any opinion regarding the perceivable quality differences from capturing in ProRes 422 versus 422 LT? There is a lot I want to do in post using subtle effects to get the look of an old film - gamma, motion, grain, etc.
Capture time tonight after final day of shooting. If I save the original AVCHD files to a directory my understanding is that I could always recapture the original clips at a different ProRes setting? Whatever in and out points I used in log and transfer would apply to a "re-ingest"?
First time using a file versus tape work flow.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

  • Adobe Lightroom 4 - Some Questions / Help Needed

    Hi everyone.
After advice from several experts, I've just purchased Adobe Lightroom 4. I've already got Photoshop CS5, but I was looking for something proper to organise my photos, plus I found Lightroom easier to do the sort of editing I am wanting to do. Now, I only really use photoshop for things like colour pops, or really in-depth editing. Anyway, I'm loving Lightroom so far, but there is some stuff I'm not very sure of, so I'd appreciate some help
    1. Organising
Firstly, I'm not really sure how to organise. At the moment, I've just got lots of folders with random events in My Pictures on W7, so I might have a folder called April 11, which contains photos from that month but that might have been a wedding or an easter holiday or both. So it doesn't really work. \
I understand in Lightroom what catalogs are. But I know enough to know that I don't want to group mine into those, its getting too complicated. What I don't know though is the difference between a collection and a folder. Basically, I'm wanting to reimport and reorganise all my photos, so I want to put them into "events" as such like you can do on iPhoto on a mac, so I would have "France Summer Holiday 11" for example, or "Mia's Wedding". I'm not really sure on the best way to do this ...?
    2. Editing
I've played around quite a bit so far, and I really like what I've seen. On a lot of photos, I've made a lot of changes. But from what I can see, these changes are stored merely in Lightroom itself. For example, at the moment I'm importing photos from my external disk into Lightroom, which then saves them in C://My Pictures/Lightroom/Pictures . When I go look at these photos in windows explorer which I know I have edited, it doesn't show any of the changes or editing I've done on them. Now I realise this is me being stupid, but why doesn't it? Supposing I then want to email that photo to a friend that I have edited? How would I do that? I don't want to have to open lightroom and export every single photo I edit? There must be a simpler way?
Likewise for backing up, because all my files are in subfolders within C:// My pictures / Lightroom / Pictures, to back up I was simply going to set up windows to copy that latter folder onto my external HDD everytime I plugged it in. This would be pointless however if it isn't physically overwriting the original photo with my edited version?
    3. Editing 2
Something else I like to do is make lots of different edits to the same photo. For example, at the moment I'm editing a photo of a pier at night. I spent ages adjusting colours and lighting and so on, and now it looks great. But I would also like to save a copy of that photo with the "old age photo" effect preset on. Is this possible? and how do I do it? Other than obviously importing a duplicate?
    4. & 5. & 6 - Misc:
    4. Simple question - how do I add tags, keywords or comments if I haven't done it on import?
    5. My camera doesn't have built in GPS. Is it possible for me to manually geotag photos (in a batch, say for a Summer Holiday to NY), could I manually add a geotag for all these photos?
    6. I also forgot to add copyright information on import for some, is it possible to do this after import and how?
    7. I normally shoot in JPEG. I probably shoot shoot in RAW as everyone tells me to do so. Are there any significant advantages in terms of quality, and for editing with?
Thanks for any help given. I appreciate this is a lot of questions, but I could really use the advice.

I am not so sure if you understand *catalogs*.
You need a catalog, exactly 1 in my opinion. A catalog is a database. The Lightroom database, where records about your images are stored, including the pointers to your images, which are not inside a catalog! LR backups just does the backup of the catalog (i.e. a file ending .lrcat). You need to take care separately that your real images are backed up !
Inside your LR database the best way to organize is via collections - this will give you what you want with "France summer holiday 11" etc.
Folders are relatively unimportant, just storage buckets. They should be *handy portions*, I would prefer them with below 3000 images each, as there currently some bugs to those bigger ones.
Before you start with LR, you can organize your pictures in Mac Finder / WindowsExplorer.
Or you could do it with the help of LR, by copying your images over during import into the destination folders (and deleting today's folders afterwards after having verified that everything is fine).
A simple date-based structure will do, I'd recommend  a root parent folder like "LR images", underneath one folder per year (\2010\, \2011\, \2012\...) and underneath them either
just one folder per month (LR can auto-create them for you)
or you create the folders in import dialog as e.g. "YYYY-MM-DD description of shoot", to have a mini-diary overview also in your OS.
Apart from that you create collections, either *dumb ones*, where you drag images into, or smart ones, where you specify criteria according to which they get auto-filled.
    2. Editing
I've played around quite a bit so far, and I really like what I've seen. On a lot of photos, I've made a lot of changes. But from what I can see, these changes are stored merely in Lightroom itself. LR will never overwrite your original photos.
You can save most of the catalog content into the xmp-part of the original photo, which is either a sidecar-file (.xmp) or part of the file format, like for DNG, TIFF, PSD, JPG. To do so you select the image in LR and hit <ctrl> s. Or you set it up for continuous update, which creates a lot of operations while you play back and forth in develop.
I do that on my own, typically twice per file: once I am done with develop, once I am done with keywording and other metadata update.
LR contains records about your images, i.e. a set of instructions how they are to be interpreted. That is all.
So of course you need LR to export the result of these instructions, which is actually pretty quick.
To backup your images you need to do that just once, plus you backup your LR catalog. Or if you save xmp to the files, you can do another backup once xmp is ready.
I would not consider this pointless. You just have to think that there are 2 places with data for your images: the images themselves and a database with interpretation instructions.
    3. Editing 2
Something else I like to do is make lots of different edits to the same photo. For example, at the moment I'm editing a photo of a pier at night. Is this possible? and how do I do it? Other than obviously importing a duplicate?
Yes, this is one of LR's beauties: you create a so-called *virtual copy*, which is just a 2nd record for the same original image file with different interpretation settings, like black-and-white, a different crop size, different development etc. You can have as many virtual copies as you like, and you'll see them as additional thumbnails.
Virtual copies are not saveable into xmp, though. There is another concept which is saveable into xmp: snapshots. but these are different states in develop history, and you do not see outside develop module that you have several.
If you export virtual copies e.g. to jpg one file per virutal copy will be created.

ad 4: you use the library module, metadata panel to enter.
ad 5: you use the map module. Either you manually drop your images on a map, or you have a separate GPS track to load and have LR assign via matching time-stamps.
    ad 6: like 4
ad 7: You don't need JPG from your camera, you can achieve better results viy LR from RAW. Yes, there are significant advantages as to editing headroom.
Overall, may I suggest my favorite learning material for LR? First watch Julieanne's Tutorial Videos.
Then go play and use Victoria Bampton's eBook or paper copy of her "Missing FAQs to LR4": http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/
    Have fun,

  • A Few Little Time Machine Questions

I just got a 1TB External Drive from Western Digital (My Book Studio Edition.) I just used Time Machine on my Mac Book Pro and now all my files are backed up. But I have a few questions:
    1. Does this mean that I don't have to manually drop and drag files into the External Drive?
    2. Does this mean I can delete files off of my computer and retrieve them later from my External Drive? (If this seems like a dumb question, it's rooted in my misunderstanding of Time Machine - I'm not sure if it temporarily backs things up, backs things up only when you command it to, or backs things up permanently.)
    Thank you!

    crimson_ghost,
Your questions appear to be answered, but I'll chime in too with some (perhaps) additional information...
Time Machine is mainly a backup and recovery tool. It makes a comprehensive backup of your entire installation, including all installed applications and all user data. The intention is that you will be able to completely recover from any potential disaster, such as a total failure of your internal hard drive.
Each backup that Time Machine makes is a complete "snapshot" of your installation at the time of the backup, complete with each and every file on your computer. Time Machine is able to make this "complete" backup each time it runs- without consuming much, if any, additional disk space on the backup drive- by using an advanced file system feature called "multi-linked files." In this scheme, the data for a given file is only copied once to the backup drive, but multiple "hard links" that point to that data can be created. In effect, it is like having multiple phone numbers, all of which ring to the same phone. Each backup will contain one of these "hard links" that points to the data associated with a given file that has not changed since the last backup. If the file is new or has changed, the new data is copied to the backup, and a new string of hard links will be created. Since each additional hard link consumes almost zero space, many, many backups can be made without using much disk space.
An additional benefit of this Time Machine scheme is that we are able to "go back in time" to retrieve a file that may have been deleted from the "source," and there is a truly innovative interface for doing so. Some of the OS X and iLife applications even have "Time Machine awareness" built in, and the interface can be accessed from within those apps. Pretty cool.
However, this does not mean that Time Machine can be used as an "archive" tool. It can not be used in this manner, and you should not depend on using it this way! Especially if Time Machine is used in its "default" mode, where backups are made every hour, part of its routine is to regularly "thin" the backups. This process involves the removal of old backups that do not conform to the "one backup a day for the past week," "one backup a week until disk is full" rule. At some point, Time Machine will also begin to "expire" the very oldest backups, then remove them to make room for new ones. If you attempt to use Time Machine for "archival" storage of files that have been removed from the source (your installation), you will ultimately lose them.
Now, given the way Time Machine works, it will eventually consume all- or close to all- of the disk space given to it. So it makes sense to limit what we allow it to use. How much is appropriate, and how do we limit what it can use? That's easy enough to answer...
Time Machine needs at least twice the amount of space necessary for the initial backup. I say "at least," because it will work best when given closer to 3 times the amount of space needed. If your installation of OS X, including all your user data and applications, amounts to 100 GBs for example, you'll need to give Time Machine at least 200 GBs, and my recommendation would be more like 300 GBs. If you do not give it at least this much space, your backups will eventually fail. Time Machine first makes a new backup when it runs, and then goes about checking to see what can be deleted from the older backups. Because of this, it must always have plenty of "headroom."
Giving Time Machine more than the stated "3X" figure, though, is wasteful of precious disk space that could be used in more beneficial ways. For instance, by using that disk space for "archival" purposes
In order to limit what we give to Time Machine, it is necessary to partition the external drive. Multiple logical volumes can be created, and we can size these volumes to meet the needs of Time Machine. For various reasons (I could explain, if needed), I always recommend that the first partition be used for Time machine backups. If you do not know how to use Disk Utility to partition your external drive, just ask.

  • Broadcast questions

I've just been asked if I could shoot a debate for possible airing on our local Comcast provider. We're just in preliminary talks now, but figured I should get a jump on the game if I can. I've done DVD only work, but through reading these forums, have learned many things about video for broadcast. I know that Comcast will be picky about what format it's delivered on, either a tape or HDD, so that's something I'm asking about. But what else am I forgetting? I know coloring is major for broadcast, so really for the first time, I'll spend a while coloring the whole thing (the debate will be in a large room with florescent lighting, so I figure all I'll really be doing is taking out the florescent color and giving the speakers some life back in them). So besides delivery and coloring, is there anything else I should watch out for? I'll be shooting at least 2, hopefully 3 cameras in HDV, then downconverting to DV on import since I don't think Comcast would air this in HD anyways. Will I need to include timecode or countdown at the beginning? I know I'll need to add Bars and Tone, but how long and at both the start and finish? A lot of these questions I figure I need to discuss with someone at Comcast, but seeing as how right now I'm just working on a MacBook Pro with my camera as my deck (bad, I know, but when I start getting bigger jobs that require better equipment, then I'll upgrade), I want to plan what I'll need to rent, buy, or borrow for this gig early so I'm prepared.
Any details on broadcast work would be great, thanks.
    -Brian

Believe it or not, I did a performance recently on our local Comcast station, and asked them what format they were recording on and if I could get a dub and they told me they were recording to a DVD recorder and nothing else, for the broadcast master for their show!! They were nice enough to make me a VHS copy (informing me that in fact this was SUPER VHS - ooooo!)
Whether or not your station has similar standards or lack thereof, it will behoove you to take this opprotunity to learn about mastering. The station should be able to provide you with their specs and recommendations. As far as what you can do on your end -
turn on Range Check to see if any clips need to have the broadcast filter applied. FCP's broadcast filter will clamp down on luma and chroma (brightness and color sturation) to bring the image into broadcat safe specs. Usually this is done for non-cable broadcast signals, to keep the brightness and chroma from "bleeding" into the range of the frequency bandwidth used by the audio portion of the VHF or UHF signal. The Brodcast Safe filter can be merciless with your image detail if applied aggressively, and you may find better results can be achieved with the Color Correction filters.
I usually stripe my master tape with TC starting at 00:58:30:00. This allows 90 seconds for bars, slate and countdown before starting the program at 1:00:00:00, which iis generally the standard in North America. I like to build a sequence that will mirror my master tape, adding the bars, slate, and countdown in the sequence, rather than in the mastering window. There is a nice film countdown available in the Cinema Tools extras folder on the FCS discs somewhere, if you didn't already install it. I believe the file is called Head Leader-DV NTSC, or some such thing. There will be a countdown to -2 seconds with a pop that is supposed to occur 2 seconds before program start - in case you ever wondered where 2-pop came from...
Something that many beginners do not consider is that the bars and tone are supposed to be a reference to your program, not just some extra thing to stick onto your tape at the beginning. For instance, If you have taken the time to correct your color for broadcast safe, the default bars generator from final cut will have white levels outside of broadcast safe. Any engineer that receives your tape who is doing his or her job will see these bars and then correct the signal according to those bars, which will result in dull highlights and gray blacks. If your program is already broadcast safe, you should put a filter on the bars to match, to avoid "setup" being added to your video unnecessarily.
Same is true with the tone level. The bars will have a default reference tone level of -12. If analog dubs are made, the practice generally is to set the analog tone level to 0VU - on the analog scale, 0 is in the middle, with usually 5-10dB or more of headroom above 0VU, wehreas on the digital scale, 0dB is the absolute ceiling, above which any signal will be clipped. Anyway, I usually mix my audio so my average dialog is between -18 and -12, with peaks going to -9 or so. In this case I use a reference tone of -20 on my master, so that setting the incoming tone level to 0 on analog equipment will use the headroom above 0VU. If you have mixed your audio in this way, then you may get better results by changing the tone level in your mastering sequence. If your audio levels in FCP are peaking closer to 0dB on the digital scale, you should use the default -12 tone on the bars. There are differing shcools of thought on what is really the right standard, and different types of audio warrant different approaches, depending on dynamic range, how the master willl be used, etc.
    Hope this helps -

  • Headroom thread

    Hello
I personally set all my tracks to -2dB (except the master track of course) to leave some headroom but my skills have grown and my mixes sound louder now and i've found -2db is not enough. especially with lourd guitars and bass heavy kicks. here are my questions
    - How many db's do you leave for headroom ?
    - Do less db's means less dynamic ? i mean i guess Logic has a dynamic of 0 to -100 db ?
    - what are your tricks to save headroom and fight digital distortion, apart from the usual rules for doing a good mix ?
    thanks
    bontempi

    - How many db's do you leave for headroom ?
A lot more than you. I use the K-14 scale - read up on www.digido.com, everyone should read Bob Katz's stuff.
    - Do less db's means less dynamic ?
"Volume" is not the same thing as "loudness" which is not the same thing as "dynamic".
Something can have a low loudness, but still a sizeable dynamic, being played really loud. Or something can be really loudly mastered, with virtually no dynamics, played really softly.
    i mean i guess Logic has a dynamic of 0 to -100 db ?
Bzzz. No. Logic's mixer is 32-bit, and when you bounce, you can choose 24 or 16-bit. Read up on the dynamic ranges of signals with those bit depths.
    - what are your tricks to save headroom and fight digital distortion,
apart from the usual rules for doing a good mix ?
Don't try and mix to the 0dBFS point, leave plenty of headroom, mix to 24-bit, don't over compress/limit, don't think that louder is better, do as little limiting as you can comfortably get away with without being "uncompetitve" with everything else (it is the real world, after all...)

  • Help with audio question please

    New guy here,
I have a MAC G5 with Premiere CS4. I do not prior Premiere experience. I've worked several other NLE packages so I'm not a rookie either.
Anyway, I'm routing the audio through an analog mixer and into a Canopus ADVC 110. I've been able to capture video and audio from a DVD player with Premiere's audio hardware settings set to (Built-in line input/Built-in line output). I've been able to capture both video and audio with the hardware setting set to (Built-in digital input/Built-in line output) put when I scrub on the time line or try he clip in he preview window it will not play back when I hit the space bar or click on the play button. When using (Built-in line input/Built-in line output)everything is fine.
Here's my question. How do I preview and adjust the audio prior to capturing it? I can hear it just fine when I'm capturing but I can't preview the audio levels to know where I'm at.
I thought the analog audio going into the Canopus converter would out put the audio as a digital signal since it's being exported to the MAC via firewire.
Hope someone out there is smarter than I am about this.
    Thanks!

Based on the concept of Unity in a gain chain, if you set the levels properly at the output of the analog mixer, then they should be fine coming into the software after the A/D conversion. As long as you don't clip the digital input, you can adjust levels internally on an audio timeline, so it is always better to err on the side of too little rather than too much.
Digital maximum is -20 dB which is equivalent to 0 dB VU in the analog world. This provides sufficient headroom to avoid clipping in most circumstance.
Try a few different levels and see what works best for your needs.

  • MSI Lightning GTX770 questions

    Hello,
I am looking at the possibility of purchasing a GTX770 Lightning card, and have a few questions.
Firstly, does anyone know MSI's policy with regards to swapping out the stock cooler for a waterblock?
Secondly, are the GPUs binned for performance and low leakage, therefore coming with additional overclocking headroom, or are they simply average GPUs with the headroom used up with the stock overclock that comes on the card?
Thirdly, I heard the 680 lightning cards were discontinued a while back as NVidia was forcing manufacturers to prevent end user voltage adjustments. I also heard that MSI was deemed to be pushing the voltage and clocks of the cards too far, compromising GPU longevity and overall stability. So why is it these models have been re-released with the 770 line up, and overvolting enabled, considering it's still the same Kepler GPU? Does anyone have figures for what the voltage is on this card?
Finally, would it be accurate to say the GPUs are likely to last for less time than on cards with lower GPU clocks?
    Thanks!
    Odai.

you are allowed to change the cooler to a waterblock without any problem as long as you keep the original cooler and screws for the card if something goes wrong with it so long as you don't cause any Physical damage in removing the cooler...

they should have been at least been binned to work at the advertised boost clock speed but anymore frequancy is never guaranteed and just depends on how that individual GPU reacts to more overclocking from its Pre-Overclocked state it come at...

they where Discontinued as they had run there Cycle (lightning cards are always limited run due to there High out the box clocks as only a limited amount of Nvidia GPU's that MSI get will be good enougth to reach that level) and what you are referring to is Nvidias Voltage restrictions via there Green Light program that has now stopped all manufacturers from allowing manufacturers to let users overvolt the GPU's past there design limits. as for voltage limits who knows as there doesn't seem to be any data on that...

i would say yes it will last less time but its down to the individual GPU on the card to how it handles it as no 2 will be the same and of course the lower clocked cards will last longer as they aren't being pushed as hard...

  • AM3 motherboard with DDR voltage headroom

    Hi All,
I found some very nice DDR 3 RAM that runs at 1.90 volts (OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666 Kit ReaperX HPC SDRAM Memory Module OCZ3RPX1333EB4GK) and although I tried to install it on my present motherboard, the computer ran like it was straining to suply the RAM with enough power. My motherboard tops out at 1.9 volts, the memory's stated required voltage.
    So, my question is this:
Does MSI manufacture an AM3 motherboard that has plenty of spare DDR voltage headroom so that it will handle this power hungry memory without straining itself or other components?
I thank you for your input and look forward to your answer.

Hi Henry and Bernhard, thank you for your input...it's much appreciated!
Anyhow, I bought the OCZ memory in questiion for a 970A-UD3 motherboard, I found it attractive on account of its very tight timing (6-5-5-18) and didn't stop to consider other factors. I also was deceived by the name of the manufacturer (OCZ) and thinking that they wouldn't sell a product that not only was way out of the DDR3 specification, but could also damage your motherboard and other components.
In the final analysis manufactures that should know better do produce misguided and dangerous products and not all that glitters is gold.
I installed this particular memory on a motherboard and then observed it struggling to work with it. I then removed the memory because I felt that leaving it installed was only going to invite damage to some of my other components.
I then came to this forum to investigate and you've confirmed my feelings about the memory.
    Thanks!

  • XServe RAID connected to Video Editing Station via Ethernet -Fibre question

I'm looking into switching from ethernet connections from our three desktop systems to the Xserve Raid set up we currently have to fibre. I can't seem to get a clear answer as to if it is possible to just add the cards and cables to the switch we have or if I would have to go the XSAN route in order to have fibre as the direct connection to the RAIDs...
I'm a photographer, not an IT person so please feel free to speak down to my level... : )

In theory GigE ether allows for 1000 Mb/s with a theoretical throughput of 125MB/s and 2GB Fibre is about 70% faster than that at 1700 Mb/s with 212.5 MB/s of throughput.
Now the big differences are that TCP/IP is not optimized for steady stream delivery and you're sharing the connection over a single server that works to schedule fairly and parcel out resources among users. Fibre is a single connection designed to stream data to you so you get to use a lot more of your fibre bandwidth then you do over GigE. At this point the 7 drive array is not able to saturate the fibre so you won't test the theoretical limits of the bandwidth because of the headroom in the system. At max throughput I would expect the drives are putting out something in the range of ~100-130MB/s so even with a direct connection that is your max.
If I was forced to guesstimate I would think you would be getting somewhere between 3-4x faster throughput over fibre. You're certainly more likely to hit the upper-limit of max drive output over fibre so if you say you're getting 100 MB/s over fibre and 25 MB/s over ether then that's about right. If your ether is <20MB/s then it's theoretically possible you could see a 5-6x improvement. Maybe you should test your ether with some transfers and see what your through-put is to make your own estimations.
If an 80GB file takes 55 minutes that then that's about 25MB/s. If you could bring that down by a factor of 3 then that would be 36 minutes of saved - and hopefully billable - time. But if you're getting 40 MB/s a 80GB file would take 35 minutes and then your max savings is probably 15 or 20 minutes and it becomes less compelling depending on how many times a day you do it.
+You've been very generous with your time answering all of my questions, thank you again.+
You're welcome, hope it all works out for you,
    =Tod
PS Remember that large single files get much better throughput than many small files on transfer tests. Also you might want to do your own math on what time = what throughput too. Those numbers were off the top of my head.

  • Headroom of plug-ins

    Hi everybody,
I know this has been discussed a lot but I still have some questions:
How can I know how much headroom a specific plug-in offers before you get noticeable distortion. Is there a general rule?
I know logic has lots of headroom (internally) and you can avoid distortion if you turn the master fader down (am I right?).
But how about distortion of logic plug-ins and third party plug-ins???
    Thanks Eddie

How can I know how much headroom a specific plug-in offers before you get noticeable distortion.
    Is there a general rule?
Most plugins use a floating point implementation. you can go about 0dBFS.
Some plugins use a fixed point implementation. You should not go above 0dBFS.
I know logic has lots of headroom (internally)
    Yes.
and you can avoid distortion if you turn the master fader down (am I right?).
You can turn the master fader down to avoid clipping your output or clipping a bounce, because in both of these cases you are going from a floating point implementation (Logic's mixer) back to a fixed point implementation (your audio interface, or an audio file) and therefore should not go above 0dBFS.
But how about distortion of logic plug-ins and third party plug-ins???
Logic plugins are all floating point.
Most third-party plugins are floating point. Some are fixed point, for instance some of the older Waves plugins. If you are not sure, check the manuals. If they don't mention this in the manuals, then just be careful, do some experiments, or ask the developers. It should be hard to work out - just drive the plugin well over 0dBFS and see whether you get nasty clipping.

  • Questions on Print Quote report

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to Oracle Quoting and trying to get familiar with it. I have a few questions and would appreciate if anyone answers them
    1) We have a requirement to customize the Print Quote report. I searched these forums and found that this report can be defined either as a XML Publisher report or an Oracle Reports report depending on a profile option. Can you please let me know what the name of the profile option is?
    2) When I select the 'Print Quote' option from the Actions drop down in the quoting page and click Submit I get the report printed and see the following URL in my browser.
    http://<host>:<port>/dev60cgi/rwcgi60?PROJ03_APPS+report=/proj3/app/appltop/aso/11.5.0/reports/US/ASOPQTEL.rdf+DESTYPE=CACHE+P_TCK_ID=23731428+P_EXECUTABLE=N+P_SHOW_CHARGES=N+P_SHOW_CATG_TOT=N+P_SHOW_PRICE_ADJ=Y+P_SESSION_ID=c-RAuP8LOvdnv30grRzKqUQs:S+P_SHOW_HDR_ATTACH=N+P_SHOW_LINE_ATTACH=N+P_SHOW_HDR_SALESUPP=N+P_SHOW_LN_SALESUPP=N+TOLERANCE=0+DESFORMAT=RTF+DESNAME=Quote.rtf
Does it mean that the profile in our case is set to call the rdf since it has reference to ASOPQTEL.rdf in the above url?
    3) When you click on submit button do we have something like this in the jsp code: On click call ASOPQTEL.rdf. Is the report called using a concurrent program? I want to know how the report is getting invoked?
    4) If we want to customize the jsp pages can you please let me know the steps involved in making the customizations and testing them.
    Thanks and Appreciate your patience

Yes, your understanding is correct.3) When you click on submit button do we have something like this in the jsp code: On click call ASOPQTEL.rdf. Is the report called using a concurrent program? I want to know how the report is getting invoked?
No, there is no conc program getting called, you can directly call a report in a browser window, Oracle reports server will execute the report and send the HTTP response to the browser.4) If we want to customize the jsp pages can you please let me know the steps involved in making the customizations and testing them.
This is detailed in many threads. Thanks

  • Satellite P300D-10v - Question about warranty

    HI EVERYBODY
I have these overheating problems with my laptop Satellite P300D-10v.
I did everything I could do to fix it without any success..
I get the latest update of the bios from Toshiba. I cleaned my lap with compressed air first and then disassembled it all and cleaned it better.(it was really clean insight though...)
BUT unfortunately the problem still exists...
So i made a research on the internet and I found out that most of Toshiba owners have the same exactly problem with their laptop.
Well i guess this is a Toshiba bug for many years now.
Its a really nice lap, cool sound (the best in laptop ever) BUT......
So I wanted to make a question. As i am still under warranty, can i return this laptop and get my money back or change it with a different one????
If any body knows PLS let me know.
    chears
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
I have already found you other threads.
    Regarding the warranty question;
If there is something wrong with the hardware then the ASP in your country should be able to help you.
The warranty should cover every reparation or replacement.
But I read that you have disasembled the laptop at your own hand... hmmm if you have disasembled the notebook then your warrany is not valid anymore :(
I think this should be clear for you that you can lose the warrany if you disasemble the laptop!
By the way: you have to speak with the notebook dealer where you have purchased this notebook if you want to return the notebook
The Toshiba ASP can repair and fix the notebook but you will not get money from ASP.

  • Anyone know how to remove Overdrive books from my iphone that have been transferred from my computer? They do not show up on itunes. I see a lot of answers to this question but they all are based on being able to see the books in iTunes.

How do I remove Overdrive books from the library that were downloaded onto my computer then transferred to my iphone? The problem is that they do not show up in iTunes.
I see this question asked a lot when I google, but they always give answers that assumes you can find the books in iTunes either under the books tab, or the audio books tab or in the music. They do not show up anywhere for me. They do not remove from the app like the ones I downloaded directly onto my iphone.the related archived article does not answer it either.  I even asked a guy working at an apple store and he could not help either.   Anybody...?
    Thanks!

there is an app called daisydisk on mac app store which will help you see exactly where the memory is focused and consumed try using that app and see which folders are using more memory
