Heads Up: Snow Leopard does away with AppleTalk printing

So yes, this means if you currently use an AppleTalk printer (for example an Apple LaserWriter 8500) you will need to set it up to use LPD printing instead.
If you cannot do so you may want to investigate the open source netatalk package (though configuration and installation is not for the faint of heart.)

so far... the auto-configuration i would expect to be the case for Bonjour isn't actually working. though in all honesty... i do forget if AppleTalk auto-config worked on those particular machines (they have always been a bit finicky).
i do know auto-config worked on other AppleTalk printers... and works on current Bonjour printers.
but sharing the printers after setting them up as LPR/IPP printers with proper options on OSX Server (10.5) Print Server... is not currently passing along the config information when connecting via Bonjour on a 10.6 client.
not a big deal really... as all the clients can see the printers now but just need the options selected. something i can add to my list of things to do as i gradually roll-out the 10.6 update.
i totally forgot to even check on firmware updates for the JetDirects in the HP 5000 / HP 1300 to see if they have Bonjour support now. thanks! (kind of 'duh' on my part... ha.)

Go to the website for your printer manufacturer and check if there are SL compatible drivers available for your model. This is not an unusual issue, and if the printer's not too old, the updated drivers should be there.
If you can't find one on the manufacturer's site, try Apple Support Downloads and look back through the updates in there; Apple has issued generic updates for a number of printers since SL's release, so you may find one that way.
After installing the new drivers you'll need to setup the printer again.

Functionality of Pages and Numbers has little to do with whether it's runnong on Snow Leopard or Lion. Either way, if they open an AppleWorks document in SL, they'll open it in Lion. Of course, you have to understand that certain file types - particularly, AppleWorks databases - cannot be opened with anything other than AppleWorks, so you'll need to convert them with AppleWorks before upgrading to Lion.

Snow Leopard shutting down with no warning is getting more complex!

I have a series 1 Macbook Pro and have updated to Snow Leopard. As with most other people I immediately got problems with the "battery Service" message. So, having read all the various posts, and tried re-calibration, I bought a new battery.
Charged fully and disconnected adaptor. The machine shut down with no warning at about 85%! I tried a few more times after fully charging the battery and it shut down a number of times - 83%, 85%, 89% and 98%. The battery shows a cycle count of 1. The last time it shut down (89%) I decided to try re-starting without plugging the adaptor back in. The machine started and ran up to the point where it properly started Snow Leopard - when it was about to change from the blue screen - at which point it shut down again. I tried this a number of times and it was absolutely conisistant, doing it every time.
I then had the bright idea of plugging in the adaptor but watching the LED to see what happened. The LED came on green for 1 or 2 seconds, then went red. I then immediately unplugged it again. I then tried to start the machine with battery only. It started perfectly and went on running until down to 15% at which point it shut down, again with no warning. Tried re-starting - it wouldn't! Plugged the adaptor in so that it would charge the battery whilst using the machine. Then, much to my amazement, while the adaptor was still plugged in, and the battery was far from fully charged, the machine shut down - again without warning. That's "it shut down with battery installed AND mains connected". The machine then wouldn't start, with mains connected. It would switch on for a few seconds then shut down again. To get it to start I needed to remove the battery and run it on mains only.
That's where I am at the moment, running 'mains only' with no battery installed. It looks as if Snow Leopard sets the battery monitor / charging hardware incorrectly on the MBP. Once set incorrectly it looks as if it loses itself!
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

It really doesn't get any better! Well, not a lot. I decided that I'd try yet another brand new battery. I charged it fully, disconnected the mag connector and it ran happily without shutting down - hooray. However, after putting out the message about low power and about to shut down, at about 5%, it ran to about 2% and shut down without warning. It didn't go to sleep.
I then couldn't get the machine to start again. I reset the SMC and still no joy. it would start to run, flash the screen a couple of times and then die. To get it to run I had to disconnect the battery, start it, then plug the battery back in again. Snow Leopard does appear to do something odd with the charging hardware. It appears to leave it in an odd state.
You may be right about Battery Update 1.3, but there appears to be no way of installing it under 10.6.8 - unless you know something I don't!

Well Lion does not support power PC applications. They only way is to upgrade the application, or if your have SL disks, reinstall SL.

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

I have updated from Snow Leopard to Lion with Safari Version 5.0.5. Now I can not update to Safari 5.1. There is no update in the Software Updater, and on the apple-download page, I only found a Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard. When executing it, there is an error message, that it is for 10.6 only.
It seems that I should have first updated Safari, and then only to Lion, which I didn't. Any idea how I can fix this now without having to rollback to Snow Leopard, update Safari and then go back to Lion?

When Leopard came out, machines were shipping with Tiger for 3-5 months after it's release. So the fact that you bought a machine with Leopard still installed is not uncommon, especially considering we're not even a month into release. Matter of fact, I'd be surprised to see a lot of machines (unless CTO) that are coming with Snow Leopard.
The battery issue is not specific to Snow Leopard or the MacBook Air. I've deployed SL to about 15-20 MacBook Airs and all of them have been perfectly fine (batteries).

Are you upgrading or erasing the drive first? If you upgrade then you won't lose your files. See the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).

After update to Snow Leopard, I can no longer print from my Mac Book using my HP D110 but can still print from the web

Earlier this week, I updated my Mac Book to Snow Leopard and am now having printing problems. I have an HP Photosmart D110. I have downloaded and installed the driver update. I have deleted and re-installed the printer. I have run the wireless network test (everything passed). I configured th settings on the HP EPrint website. I have shut down and re-started the computer several times. I checked for software updates.
The printer is *recognized* on the Mac Book, iPhone and the iPad. It shows up under the SysPref menu. I have been able to print coupons from the Coupons.com app using the iPhone and iPad, but I can't print from the computer itself. The printer icon opens and it indicates the document was sent but nothing comes out. I'm not sure what I'm missing?!

In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade? If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8. These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded.   You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too.

Does Snow Leopard Server come with a website design software

I'm running Snow Leopard Server on my Mac Mini-We've decided to take our website in house, and have set it up on the server. The site was created by someone for us and is in HTML files. Is there software that came already on our server that will permit us to edit the files, or do we have to buy additional software? I don't see iWeb on our server. Thanks.

iWeb works, but many sites will find it limiting (eg: no imports) or will outgrow it.
The typical evolution is from static HTML web pages and CSS and such along to some sort of web content management system (CMS). That might be home-grown, open-source, or commercial, and most of the CMS packages can be "themed" to present a particular appearance. Static HTML doesn't scale, and gets fussy to manage.
If static HTML is your chosen path, then Web (HTML) editors are widely available, and do get discussed here on occasion. Some that are mentioned include Adobe Macromedia Dreamweaver, RapidWeaver, Webacappella, Freeway, etc. (Google for details, reviews, trials, etc)
Migrating your server in-house means maintaining the server and its security, keeping any CMS you pick current, and getting DNS and some other pieces in place, and run-of-the-mill stuff like regular backups and monitoring disk space, and dealing with the usual network and hardware errors.
One of the other options (as differentiated from operating fully in-house) is to host your web site and related pieces on one of various hosting providers. (That outsources a bunch of the "fun" here, and usually for little money.)
