Headset for use w/Skype?

Best headset (head phones & microphone) for use with Skype? In Mexico (La Manzanilla, Jalisco, sm town) for 5 months. Do not have phone (landline, cell, nada) & will depend on Skype for incoming/outgoing calls. Also, no stores nearby (radioshack @ 60+ miles away). Order from Apple or from Skype? Mac issues w/Skype products? I know the built-in mic works great, but using wireless access in restaurants... really need a headset. Also, can't go to "any Apple Store nearby" and can't get help via email from Apple with Mac product? A real drag without a phone & out of country (USA). Have Extended Care plan w/Apple, but seems useless right now. Brand-new to Skype & to MacBook so appreciate any help on this issue.

The problem for me is that there are so many on the market and they are all (generally) expensive. If I do buy one, I would much prefer to buy one someone else has used and approved. There is also the problem of transporting it when I go abroad. The last headset I got (Plantonics Digital) is great, with a long cord, good sound, and folds. But even when folded, it's hard to pack in my Crumpler. The Freetalk Wireless Stereo Headset (on Skype) seems impossible to carry.
Help?! ... and Happy New Year,
Aitan.

  • The right headset for mac and skype

hello there are problems with line in on g4 macs which are well known so here is the answer buy a plantronics 45 headset BUT NOT FROM APPLE BECAUSE THEY
CHARGE 79 POUNDS WHEN EBAY OR AMAZON CHARGE ONLY 29 POUNDS IT WORKS GREAT PLUS YOU GET 120 MINS FREE YOU CAN ALSO USE IT FOR PC AS WELL AND I TELL YOU ITS THE BEST THING I BROUGHT THIS YEAR,REMEMBER ITS THE PLANTRONICS 45 ENJOY

Emperor and Adam -- I hope you can help me. I have a PB G4 running OSx 10.3.9, and I do want to use Skype, and I did buy the Plantronics 45 headset. But it is not working -- I can get internal computer sound (music, etc.) to come thru headset, but I cannot get external sound to work (ie, the internal microphone is taking precedence over the headset microphone.) But, when my Skype buddy talks back, I hear it via the headset. I went into system preferences and selected the plantronics headset (which is all I am supposed to do, according to Plantronics). I also turned the sound all the way down on the internal microphone. FYI, when I talk into the headset, the screen indicator looks like the headset microphone is working, but my Skype buddy says that my voice is still coming over the internal microphone. Does this make sense? Also, how do I fix this???

  • Which headset for talking via Skype ?

My kids would like to buy as X'mas present a headset stereo, it can be USB or with 2 plugs in and out.
Which one is better, some suggest the plug one because USB can give problems with audio.
    Can you please advice.
    Regards

Actually, I heard the opposite, that the one with the two plugs (3.5mm audio in and audio out) could cause audio problems, because of line noise. USB is immune to this because it is a different way of putting audio into the computer.
I use Skype myself, and just a microphone and headphones do. It is recommended that you have broadband, however, communications over long distances will distort audio, including conversations with dialup users.
There really isn't much a decision to be made when considering Skype, because audio quality varies more by connection, rather than the audio equipment.

  • $600.00 Verizon bill for using SKYPE in China

Ok guys I'm ******...just got a $600.00 bill from verizon for using my Skype phone number in China. In the past, when I was out of the country, I gave everyone my Skype phone number, and if I was not on my computer,it would bounce to my cell phone. No use of verizon service or equipment(I own the phone) no charge from verizon. THIS trip verizon is charging me over $580.00 because I answered my Skype calls that used my Skype phone number which bounced to my cell...what the heck??!! I called customer service and they agreed to reduce the bill by $68.00??, but refused to rescind the charge. What should I do? How can they charge me when I did not use any of their equipment? Oh, I also specifically clicked my phone on "do not accept calls/data/text"   when I got to China, so nobody would accidentally call my cell #. Any ideas? (aside from dropping verizon service after 15 years on a 5 phone plan) which I am doing??'

Holy cow! That's not small pcket change, ellen22. I can definitely understand your shock getting the high bill. Were you using the Skype application on your phone to place & receive calls while you were in China? If you were, this application does require a data connection and may be the reason you ended up with such a high bill. Without the 100 MB Global Data Plan for $25, each MB used in China at a pay-as-you-go rate is $20.48. That can really add up if you aren't connected to WiFi!
If you were not using your Skype application, then you may have Skype set up to forward calls to your mobile number when you're not available at home. The caller would call your Skype number and Skype would call your mobile number when you're not around the computer, essentially creating a call to your mobile number. With the per minute rate in China being $1.99, those charges can really add up too in you're answering those forwarded calls.
We certainly don't want to lose you after all the fantastic years together. Please fill us in on more details how you were actually using your phone and Skype while traveling in China.
    Thank you

  • Bluetooth/USB headsets for iBook G4

I would like to buy a headset to use with my iBook G4, and I just want to check and see if anybody can verify that a Bluetooth headset will be ok with my computer.
I don't have Bluetooth built in to my computer, but I do have an external Bluetooth adapter, which I use with my wireless mouse. Should any Bluetooth headset therefore also work with my iBook G4?
Sorry if this question has been asked/answered before. I've been looking around the forums for about 30 minutes, and most answers I've found are directed at MBP users only.
I only plan on using the headset for Skype, if that makes any difference whatsoever.
Thanks very much in advance for any insight that anybody can provide before I buy.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi, Technoclumsy and Dave —
TC, please accept a warm welcome to Apple Discussions.
I know a few things about Bluetooth implementation(s) by various manufacturers, but don't use a headset. So my response is dependent on research and reading about others' experience. Please consider it in that context.
    (1) First, I think you'll find the most useful resource here is the Other Bluetooth Devices forum, where there are many threads about Bluetooth-enabled devices such as headsets, phones, PDAs, etc. A search for "+headset" in that forum provided more results than you'd care to read in a single sitting.
Among many, I recommend you take a look at these posts by Alexander Traud — ( A ), ( B ) — in a thread called "Bluetooth headset to use with Skype" (look through the entire thread). Some of what he says may be a little more understandable based on context discussed below.
    (2) Shop skeptically. Unforunately, it's a bit difficult to make definitive statements about compatibility, functionality, and reliable connections of Bluetooth-enabled devices — particularly when mixing devices manufactured by different companies. Despite the fact that Bluetooth is an open-source technology, it's also rapidly evolving and implemented in slightly different ways in different brands. More on this in a minute...
    (3) Many adapters aren't supported. Apple only formally supports its own internal Bluetooth modules (cards) and D-Link DBT-120 adapters, Revisions B2, B3, and B4. While other companies may claim Mac-compatibility — and their adapters may work — this has proven spotty. The one sure thing that may be said is that Apple has only designed its firmware updates to "flash" its own modules and the specified adapters.
    (4) Who cares? Well, that matters in a couple of ways. The inital Bluetooth Specifications had a lot of problems, and were improved significantly by Specification (version or v.) 1.1 in 2003. Many adapters and devices are still designed to this v.1.1 standard — but Bluetooth has evolved a lot since then, with the release of v.1.2 and 2.0+EDR (the latter requires a different Bluetooth chip, and is what's currently "built-into" the iBook G4, the MacBook Pro, and other new models). Devices designed to the newer Specifications are backward-compatible — but some things (profiles, for example) must be available for both.
To make a very long story a bit shorter, the major changes in  Bluetooth Specification v.1.2 vs. 1.1  included:
          • Addition of many new or revised "profiles" that enable different types of applications to communicate via Bluetooth
          • Improved resistance to interference from other 2.4 GHz RF sources (by spread-spectrum adaptive frequency hopping)
•Technical improvements in connecting, detecting errors, and synchronization capability.
    (5) Need current Bluetooth software and firmware for the headset profile (HSP). As described in KnowledgeBase Article 151411: Which profiles does Apple Bluetooth support? , availability of HSP requires that you have Bluetooth Software 1.5 for Mac OS X [02/05/04]  and Bluetooth Firmware Updater 1.2 [11/23/04] installed. You can check the former in System Profiler »» Hardware »» Bluetooth (with Views set to Full profile): if it reports Software Version 1.7xxxx or later, the software update is installed. (You can post back to discuss this, if unsure.) For internal modules, I'd expect to see Firmware Version 2.xxxx or 3.xxxx if the firmware is current. (Unfortunately, the firmware version may not be reported for adapters in System Profiler.) Please note Alexander's caution in the cited thread that "flashing" an adapter to upgrade firmware takes much longer than you might expect; and that you should see a dialog indicating success in updating the firmware when complete.
    (6) In summary, I recommend that you use the specified D-Link adapter — or confirm with a high degree of certainty that another adapter is compatible with your iBook and OS X 10.4.6, has HSP, and meets the appropriate specification to match the headset. If you do have an appropriate D-Link DBT-120 adapter, be sure to upgrade firmware and to check / upgrade software. As to recommended types of headsets, please refer to others' experience described in threads in the Other Bluetooth Devices forum.
I hope this is helpful to you,
    Warm regards to you both,
    Dean
For clarity, please note that this is all directed to the use of headsets. Apple software does not currently support the A2DP profile for stereo headphones.
I edited this message...   But probably not enough!

  • Bluetooth Headset for MacBook Pro

    Hi,
Got a new 15" MacBook Pro a few weeks ago and have been having issues with my Nokia bluetooth headset when using with Skype. It connects ok but there seems to be alot of static in the earpiece when in use. I understand that there are some issues with different headsets but if anyone can recommend a good bluetooth headset that will work well with Skype it would be a great help.
    Thanks,
    Paul

I have the Jaybird JB-200 bluetooth headphones. I have never used them with Skype, but I use them all of the time with my MacBook Pro and iPhone.

  • Non Bluetooth headsets for iphone?

    Hello all,
I'm looking for non bluetooth (aka ones with a wire) headsets with little luck. I've tried using a belkin iphone adapter for my Bang and Olufsen Earset 1 but it does not fit (which shocked the apple store people who had no alternative suggestions). I've been looking and all I've seen are bluetooth sets. Anyone have any suggestions for a good wired headset for use with iphone?

For alot of standard headphones to work you will need one of the 2 adaptors below

Hi! Im using a macbook Pro 17,5 and I´ll have one audio input and one mic input! But Im using only the audio input with my iphone 5 headset and using the mic from that headset!
Why does everyone else on my skype hearing me and what Im doing on my mac?

You should post in the Skype forums. However I would presume that Skype needs a WiFi network not a 3GS network to function.

  • Can I use my headset for "sound-out" and phone mic...

I have an E51 and the headset that came with it. I would like to achieve the following during calls: To use the headset for sound-out (i.e. as headphones) and the phone mic for sound-in. The mic on the headset gives a lot of static and I would rather use the phone mic (girlfriend complains).
So I tried this: Under Tools>Settings>General>Enhancement, I set the Default to Headphones.
Still, when I connect my headset it says "Default Enhancement: Headset" and the headset mic is automatically used.
The default enhancement settings does not seem to matter.
Does anyone know if there is a way to solve this? Is there a way to manually switch between the headset and phone mics?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I am not using a bluetooth headset but a cabled one (that one that came with the phone for me -- I guess nokia skimped a bit here, not shipping with a bt headset).
I was recently told basically the same thing you are saying in a store, that it is not possible to use the mic for sound-in during a headset call. He also said that any cabled headset or even *headphones* will be recognized as a headset by nokia phones because they all have the same 3 connectors (right, left, mic) on the 2.5mm jack. Can that really be right?
So that means that even if I get a set of cabled headphones for my e51, I will not be able to use them for sound-out during a call?
    cheers

  • "Itemised billing" of Skype Credit used for phone calls (Skype Credit Usage History)

It is very diffilult to obtain a summary of your Skype Credit usage history. I want to know how much each call cost. I found it on this website:https://secure.skype.com/account/usage I noted my Skype call credit was used in a very short period and I wanted to know which calls were responsible for this. It's almost impossible to find this information using the Skype Desktop Application. Calls marked "Special Services" were responsible for these costs. I wish Skype would be able to clearly mark calls which have expensive rates. I use a subscription with phone calls, but these "special service" calls are not anticipated and unexpectedly used all my Skype Credit. I am asking Skype to make it easy to get your Skype Credit Usage History, using the Skype application.

    Hello
It's not the Macbook which is being retired - just the old software version that runs on it. Simply download and install the latest software version on your existing machine.
TIME ZONE - US EASTERN. LOCATION - PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA.
I recommend that you always run the latest Skype version: Windows & Mac
