Headstart Designer 10g Migration Guide?

Is there a Headstart Designer 10g Migration Guide?
We are migrating our forms application generated from Designer2K 2.1, Forms 5, Headstart 212 with repository in database Oracle 8 to the latest releases Designer 10g (10.1.2.0.2), Forms 10g (10.1.2.0.2) with repository in Database 10g R2 (10.2.0.2).
If we follow the migration path for designer and the repository database to 6i then to 10g, recompile the object library and form templates, regenrerate our modules, then will it still work? Do we need to do anything to the Headstart Designer Template Package? Hope you can help with a road map.

Hi Nathan,
there are several possibilities for a migration path. It depends on the expected life-span of the application(s), wether or not you want to use new Headstart functionality, etc.
A description of these possibilities can be found in the migration guide which is included in the Headstart 9i/10g documentation. Do you have the latest version of Headstart available?
Because you currently use an older version of Headstart, a migration will take a bit more work than described in this documentation because Headstart code has changed. So you will have to replace Headstart function calls or create a wrapper library.
Further, regeneration of (the more complex) Forms is not that simple as you will probably have to modify the lay-out. If you use client-side functionality (open MS Word/Excel, write to the local file system, etc), you will have to use Oracle's Webutil-package.
So it can be done. But it will take some planning and programming. Succes.
p.s. if you (temporarily) publish your e-mail address, i can provide you with some additional info.

  • Migration Designer 6i to Designer 10g with Forms generation

Has anyone done a migration from 6i Designer to Designer 10g with Forms generation?

There is a newer version of Headstart available, that version (6.5.4.0.1) is also certified for Oracle Developer Suite 10gR2. I can't tell you if it is the latest version.
Headstart is a product of Oracle Consulting. You have to purchase it from Oracle Consulting. Ask for iDevelopment Accelerators Package.

  • Peformance issues during Designer 10g R2 migration

    Hi
Following a successful pilot migration from Designer 6.0 to Designer 10g R2, I'm running the real world migration.
The pilot took about 3 hours (using the migration wizard in the RAU), but the real one is taking much longer and I keep encountering tablespace errors, specifically ORA-01653 and ORA-01654. Our DBA is fixing these on the fly.
The DB is running ok, but in Windows Task Manager the RAU status is 'Not Responding' (which I'm used to for Designer Reports) and it's hanging on the screen for ages. When it does come back to life, I seem to get another tablespace error. It's hard to tell how much progress is actually being made.
After the pilot, we dropped the repository owner and recreated the repository (to clean it). We had some additional content in 6.0 which we needed to include as it wasn't in the pilot migration, but I don't think the size of the actual data we're migrating has increased significantly.
I'm not sure if I should perservere with the migration or abort it and restart - any suggestions? I don't know how far we have got (from the RAU) - is there a way for my DBA to check this perhaps?
    Thanks, Antony

I am not very worried about the tablespace extension problems.
Designer seems to wait well for the tablespaces to be enlarged and then it will continue on without any issue.

  • Latest Migration Guide

    Hi,
we developed almost 1000 forms and 800 reports with Designer 1.3.2 and Headstart 3.4.2. Forms were all 100% generated and reports circa 70%.
Now we migrate to developer 6i and we run in all kinds of troubles and problems. We choose simple upgrade path from Headstart Migration Guide ver. 2.1.2.0.2, but this guide is limited. Is there available any newer or updated migration guide, that we can get it? And any suggestion will be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Miran

    Hi Jack,
I agree with Cliff. You should complete the
Post-deployment Configuration properly in Server Manager firstly. Then you will be able to open the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard.
In addition, for migrating SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, please refer to following TechNet article
and check if can help you.
Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows
Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience
If anything I misunderstand or any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow performance Designer 10g (on 10gR2 database)

We are busy testing Designer 10g version 10.1.2.5 (windows XP) on 10gR2 64 bit database (Sun solaris) . The repository was migrated from Designer 6.0.
But the performance/response is rather slow. Example: At first, opening a server model diagram took 2 minutes or more. By searching the forum we found the tip for the "alter system set OPTIMIZER_SECURE_VIEW_MERGING = false;". That made a big difference.
But now we still have response problems: Expanding the treeview for the list of tables, views or snapshots takes much longer then in Designer 6.0.
Also opening for example Design Editor takes longer then one normally expects, allthough some delay can be expected because we have a lot of applications (100) in the repository.
Is it because it is now written in Java, or are more database optimizations possible?
    Paul.

Have you computed statistics using the Repository Administration Utility (RAU)? The default percentage of 20% is usually good enough, but you could go higher.
Do a View Objects in RAU and check for missing, disabled or invalid objects. If you find any, there are ways to correct the situation, mostly under the Recreate button.
Make sure that no-one else is using the repository, then press the Recreate button in RAU and use the selection labeled: Truncate Temporary Tables. Sometimes these tables get too full and can impact performance.
Under the Options menu in RAU, there is an item labeled: Enable Performance Enhancements. To be honest with you, I've never noticed this item before, and I don't know for sure what it does. Then again, I've never had any serious performance problems in Designer. It might be worth your while to back up your repository, then turn this on.

  • Oracle Designer 10g With Oracle 11g DB possible

    Hi,
    Please clarify my below query,
we are currently using oracle designer 10g and deploying the components to production DB which is in oracle 9i, We are planning to migrate to oracle supported version 11g DB, since oracle designer 11g is not there we would be sticking to oracle 10g itself, Now my question is, will we be having issues or road blocks with this combination Oracle designer 10g and Oracle 11g DB???

    @Erik
Don't have a doc id. You have to go to the certication tab in My Oracle Support. Search for Oracle Designer 10.1.2.6.0 there you will find the three supported database version.
Oracle Designer 10.1.2.6.0 is certified with Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0 on Microsoft Windows (32-bit) XP
Oracle Designer 10.1.2.6.0 with Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0

    @Bala
Colleagues of mine have imported a designer repository inside 11gR2 and where not able to change objects inside the repository. When they imported the same designer dump inside an 11gR1 database it worked fine.
In the other post (Re: 11G compatibility it is also written that there are some major bugs and those bugs will not be fixed.

    Hi,
I want to create a stacked canvas using designer 10g, how can I do it?
    thanks.

Since you ask this question inside the Oracle Designer Headstart forum, you have Oracle Headstart. Inside Oracle Headstart there is a demo application you can have a look inside the demo application. For instance module hsd0016f will show you a stacked tab canvas inside a tab canvas.

         1. Oracle 4.5-->6i-->10g, In this what are benefits of migrating into intermediate version.Oracle's migration path is 4.5, 6i, 10g it is more logical to migrate using this path and it is recommended by Oracle, the obsolete built-ins would be pointed out at compilation and fixes would be more automated and simple since Forms 6i was designed to accept migration from 4.5 and the internal design of the forms will be much more adaptable to later releases.
         2. if we migrating into intermediate version 6i, do we need to fix all the errors before moving to 6i.It would be better and easier to fix things in Forms 6i rather than 10g, you can leave them and than you'll have to fix them under 10g.
         3. if no, do we lose any functionlity while migrating to 10g.Functionality built on obsolete built-ins and commands will be lost, you are more likely to face bugs.
         4. Does Oracle support direct migration to 10g?Oracle's official migration path is 4.5 to 6i to 10g
         5. if we open oracle 4.5 form in 10g form builder, do we lose any functionality? do we need to lot manual replacement? It all depends on your application size and features. I suggest you migrate to Forms 6i first and than to 10g although you can do it directly to 10g since Forms 6i is no longer supported.
I personally rather follow the recommended path and use Oracle support in 10g migration.

  • 9i Spatial 10g Migration

    Dear List,
We are undergoing Oracle 10g migration at the moment. Could someone point to where I can get information with regards to existing 9i spatial tables and metadata in MDSYS schema. In particular,
    1) Once the spatial tables are imported into 10g spatial, is it necessary to run the SDO_MIGRATE_TO_CURRENT procedure?
    2) Can I simply import key metadata tables from 9i's MDSYS into 10g's MDSYS. If not, is there a migration tools I could use without registering the spatial tables?
    Thanks!
    Bo

    Hi,
There is no migration of spatial data itself you need to worry about when moving from 9i to 10g, so you should not need to execute sdo_migrate.to_current. If your data is of the form supported way back in 8.1.5 (single digit sdo_gtype), then you should run this procedure.
By following the directions in the database upgrade guide mdsys schema objects will automatically be upgraded - there are no directions specific to spatial. It just works.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

Yes, that is correct. However, SCM is no longer being released as a standalone product. You should use Oracle Designer (which includes the Repository and all SCM functionality) instead.

  • ADF 11 Migration Guide

    Hi,
I'm wondering if there is an ADF 11 migration guide?
Right now I'm using ADF 10g and so far I've only found the ADF 10g to Trinidad migration information, which is useful but names components which aren't in ADF 11.

Is the migration of application developed in 10.1.3.3 is available now to Jdev 11g technical preview.I have also noticed that several components like af:panelForm , af:panelHorizontal are missing in Jdev 11g.
How can we do the migration.

  • Portability between Designer 9i r2 and Designer 10g r2, and deployment?

I have some questions to ask...
I have been given the job of adding Oracle to the reportoire of databases available to be used for a commercial Delphi application. The idea is to create a database in 10g that this application can talk to.
I wish to develop the database, constraints and triggers etc using Oracle Designer (not because I think it's best, but simply I know how to use it, and don't know JDeveloper yet, and time is of the essence).
Here's where the problem lies: The last application I developed was on 9i r2 and was going to a 9i r2 platform, and I generated DDL for the database tables stuff, and also for the table API, ending up with two sets of script files to run on the target system. Two of the lines of code in the table API script were:
    @ C:\oracle\9iDSHome\cgens72\sql\cdsaper.PKS
    @ C:\oracle\9iDSHome\cgens72\sql\cdsaper.PKB
Of course the pathnames weren't right, but when I fixed them I managed to get the system installed correctly. However the clients for the application I am working on now should not have to have developer installed... I want them to be able to just run the script files into a 10g database and not worry about designer/developer at all.
The other issue is just as serious. Although clients shouldn't have to have designer installed, I want the application developer/company owner to be able to fiddle with the designer if he wants to. I have 9i where I work, and he will have 10g. Will I be able to do a repository export/dump from my 9i r2 and import it to his 10g r2? With the previous project I did, I couldn't even import the designer export from my 9i r2 to the 9i r2 at the workplace... it said "Incorrect header file" - it was lucky I had the DDL script files or I would never have got it in the database at all! If they had had a different version of oracle then I don't know what would have happened when trying to run those package files from developer (the comments say something about an error package or some such)!
Eventually I'm going to upgrade to 10g for database development but I don't want to just yet.
    So my questions are:
    1. Can I develop the system using 9i r2 DB and 9i r2 DS and then create DDL scripts to be run on 10g client databases without having to have developer installed on the client machines? could my "boss" distribute those two developer package files with the DDL scripts to the clients without breaking some kind of copyright?
    2. Will I be able to import a Designer 9i r2 export into a Designer 10g r2 repository for my "boss" to make adjustments and produce refined DDL scripts himself later on?
If the only thing holding me back is having 10g installed where I work then tell me now and I'll take the plunge. If there's other issues I need to find a way around them.
I thank you in advance for any advice you can give
    Thanks
    Adam Sawyer

    Hi,
This issue has been reported with Designer Releases prior to 9.0.4.4 against 10g database.
Please upgrade to the latest Designer Release 9.0.4.5 the import will work fine.

    Wilson.
