Healing Brush / Aligned problem

Hi,
When I use the healing brush and deselect the Aligned tool, it doesn't do anything, the source still follows the curser.  I have tried the remedies I found in this forum, changing format by pressing the 'F' key, restarting photoshop, and I have reinstalled CS4 but it still doesn't cure the problem.
I use a macbookpro and don't seem to have this problem in the past.
I even tried to contact Adobe via Support, but found that to be an absolute nightmare, I seem to go round and round in circles from one page to another and then find I'm back at the first page.I can't find a way to actually contact them, does anyone know the best way?
Much appreciated if anyone can help.
Regards,
John

Do you mean in one uninterrupted stroke or when you release and do another stroke?

  • Spot healing brush alignment problem

Using Photoshop CS4 (11.0) on a Mac with 10.5.6. Sometimes the spot healing brush works as expected. However, after working for a while, the alignment seems to be off--I hover the cursor over the spot I want to retouch, but when I click the mouse the area retouched is a bit (1/4" or so) below the spot healing brush cursor. If I quite and restart Pshop the problem goes away. This is with the spot healing brush--not the one where you need to select where to clone from. Is something wrong, or is there a new feature I don't know about that's causing this? I've used the spot healing brush quite a bit with CS3.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them. This is getting frustrating.

I think you are talking about a different issue here. This problem is not specific to the spot healing brush.
@ OP: The brush alignment problem is very real and I have it frequently when working with larger files (approximately >500MB in memory). I have two macs, a macbook (GMA X3100) and a mac pro (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT). So two completely different hardware arrangements that have the exact same problem. This is clearly not a problem with graphics cards.
Drawing with any tool like: brush (any brush - dodge/burn, blur, eraser etc.), lasso (any lasso), line, crop tool etc. will result in a misalignment of about 0,5 cm directly downward. However, clicking on menus and dialogue boxes works as expected. Switching off OpenGL features in PS WILL NOT PREVENT THE PROBLEM (if I shout, maybe Adobe will hear...). The same problem appears whether I'm using a Wacom tablet or a mouse. It even appears when the Wacom driver is uninstalled.
So, if Adobe is not acknowledging the problem it's safe to assume it will be featured in CS5 as well.
@ Jim: Sorry, I would have posted in the other thread but your link does not work anymore.

  • Problem with Healing Brush Align Function

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks

It really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page.  Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush?  I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels.  If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing.  I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:

  • Spot healing brush tool problem

I am having a lot of problems with the spot healing brush tool.  I am getting asked to use the alt key to pick a spot.  It should not be doing that.  It acts as if I were using the clone stamp tool, which I do not want to use now.  Can anyone help me with this?  My software is Photoshop CC and is up to date.

Click and hold on the healing brish on the Toolbar.  You have the Healing brush selected, and you want the 'Spot healing brush'

  • Problem with Enhanced Healing Brush

    LR5.0, Windows7 (64 bit)
I am having a problem with the Advanced Healing Brush, where the colors in the destination area don't match the colors in the source area, even with opacity at 100. Is this a known bug, or is this something I am doing wrong?
Here's the original picture. I want to remove the date, and the spotlight underneath the date, on the bottom right.
Using the enhanced healing brush, I try to remove this and replace it with a similar area of grass
You can see the opacity is 100, and yet the color of the grass in the destination area is noticeably darker than the color of the grass in the source area.
So, what is wrong here? Bug, or user error?
By the way, I also performed a similar operation in Photoshop Elements, with much nicer results.

    Hi DJ,
I find the healing brush a bit so-so. I've had the same result as yourself - it will blend in poorly leading to muddy tones.
Also the boundaries of the brushed area are too distinct. Overall, I see the clone setting as more useful.
I've had a cut at your picture, using multiple selections. I could do better,(the shadow lines are not well aligned) but I think this illustrates my point.
I find that one large selection (even though that's the example used in the LR video) rarely works well for me.
I think this tool can use some improvement.
    Hope this helps,
    hans

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Problem with Advanced Healing Brush on LR 5

I am experiencing a problem with the Advanced Healing Brush  on LR 5. Using, say, the Heal option, when I have marked the area I want to heal, and then move to the source I want to copy, I cannot get the colour of my selected source point to remove the heal spot.
I have looked at a number of tutorials and working comments on using this function, and I am pretty sure that I am following the correct procedure for using the Advanced Healing Brush. I have the same problem when I try to use the Cloning option - the colour just does not fill the area I want to fix.
Is there possibly a bug hanging around?  Can anyone give me any possible solutions to my problem?  I so want to try out this terrific new feature in LR 5.

    Thanks for your response
    I attach 2 screenshots
Screenshot1  - See the orange tip of a feather behind the kid's head - I want to remove this with the heal option in the Spot Removal tool
Screenshot2 - I have demarcated a piece of the feather with the spot tool and have chosen the source color of the wooden bench
I was expecting the demarcated area to have adopted the chosen source color, but it hasn't, by a long shot. I've tried evry which way to get it to work, but no luck.
I even tried using the Clone option, choosing the same source color and painting over the orange feather, but that also didn't work.
I look forward to your comments
Sorry - forgot to add the images

  • CS5 Healing brush & Clone tool Strange Problems

When I option click a sample point to heal or clone, then release the mouse or pen, the sampled area remains in the brush diameter even though I haven't healed or cloned anything yet.  Just moving the mouse or pen around includes the image of the sampled area all over the image.  What gives?
Wasn't always like this, just last few days.  For example if I select and area with lips on a face, then move the brush to the cheek, the image of the lips remains in the brush area.  Very frustrating.  Any help would be much appreciated.  This is with both the healing brush and clone stamp tools.
    Mac OS 10.6.3, MacPro 2 X 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel 16GB ram NVIDIA GE-Force 8800 GT graphics card running CS5 in 32 bit mode.

That is a preference that was added in Photoshop CS4 to preview the cloned area (makes it easier to align).
Go to the Clone Source palette, and turn off "Show Overlay" if you don't want to see the preview.
You might want to take some time to read up on the Clone Source palette, and the options it offers -- it can really speed up a lot of common cloning tasks.

  • Healing Brush Problem (PSCS5)

Hi there, today my friend was creating tilable textures using the Offset tool, and then taking the Healing Brush tool to fix up the bad edges between the tiles. This has worked forever on his PC, but now suddenly is causing distortion when he uses it. Instead of having a soft edge to the healing brush marks, it comes out with distorted, pixelated edges.
    Things to note:
    • all other tools with soft edges work fine
    • if the file is saved out as a different file format the problem is saved with it (still visible)
    • only happens in CS5
    • the pixelation on the edges of the brush strokes are solid color and don't look the same as what happens if turing a layer to dissovle or anything
    • Photoshop CS5 Extended 64bit, Windows 7 64bit, GTX 260
    -Thanks

So let me make sure I fully understand what is being attempted:
You're using the Healing Brush to essentially clone pixels from another part of the image to an area of the image that's transparent.  You expect the soft edge of the brush to leave the edge of the result soft.
I think I can reproduce what you're seeing.  Notably the blending doesn't seem to work properly either.
Here's what I see while brushing, then after I let up on the mouse button:
I think the real problem here is that it really doesn't seem to make much sense to use the Healing Brush on a transparent part of the image.  It's prime function is to mix the result in with the surroundings.  What are the surroundings in a transparent area?  At best, you might hope to get white pixels there.
Some ideas that might help you work around this issue:
    1.  Use a layer mask to manage the transparency, and have the pattern entirely there in the image.  In other words, separate the texture prep entirely from the transparency prep.
    2.  Use the Clone Stamp tool instead of the Healing Brush if you really need to brush over transparent pixels.

  • Problems using the Spot Healing Brush

I've tried to use the spot healing brush on a number of photos but it doesn't work at all - I've watched the video tutorial, but wehen I try and use it nothing happens - it appears to be the only part of Lightroom 5 that doesn't work.
How can I solve this problem?

    Keith,
This is what happens when I try and use the Spot Healing Brush:
I can select spots to heal/delete/duplicate - both single and multiple
After selection and hitting "done" nothing happens.
Consequently the spots I jhave tried to heral appear on the exported picture.
I would expect the Spot Healing Brush in Lightroom 5 to acxt the same as in Adobe Photshop Elements 10 - ie. you see the spot disapear, but for some reason it is not.
Hence the question, as I am wondering whether I'm doing something wrong-I've wateched the tutorial and it doesn't give me any clues as to whether I am doing anything wrong to erase/remove the spots.

  • Problem with Clone Stamp & Healing Brush

Once set the sample point by option clicking with either the clone stamp tool or the healing brush, I suddenly see a duplicate layer that moves with the cursor as I try to position it oveer the spot I want to fix.
I have tried resetting both tools.  I am running CS6 and have experienced no other problems.
    Any ideas what's wrong?

    Hi RedMo53,
Your seeing the clone source overlay and you can adjust the preferences for the clone overlay by going to Window>Clone Source.
You might try clipped and see how that works.

  • Advanced healing brush problem

After I have removed an object in LR5 using the advanced healing brush, I export the image to Photoshop cs6.  The erased object (in LR 5) shows up again in Photoshop.  What's going on? Another problem is that my friend uses the brush to remove some object.  Even though he set the Opacity to 100%, the object is stll can be seen as the opacity is only 70%

I have installed the ACR 8.1, but it doesn't help at all.  I guess the ACR just make the software to recognize photos from the new cameras.  It really annoys me that the object erased by advanced healing tool comes back in photoshop so that I have the use the clone stamp in PS to remove it.

  • Problem with PSE 9 spot healing brush in content aware

When I try to use the spot healing brush to remove an object with content aware, it appears to work, then I get the Windows Error message, and PSE 9 shuts down.  I have 2 GB RAM and plenty of scratch disc room.  Any one else have this problem?

The problem is obviously a program error. The problem may be resolved by comparing the code to CS5 which we know works without a problem.
    So what's the plan Adobe??!!!!!
Is there a solution?? I seem to remember a problem in version 7 or 6 which had to do with P4 Hyper threading and the same processors. One of the biggest reasons for upgrading to PE9 is content aware. Without it working how many sales are lost? With the state of our economy it is much more difficult to justify an additional expense for another computer or Phoroshop CS5!!
    Let's fix this!!
    A response would be appreciated.
