Healing brush paints in grey or white..

I downloaded trial version of cs5 but was shocked to see that da most important tool for retouching, healing, doesnt work properly, it samples correctly and it seems perfect as long i hold & drag but as i release da mouse its completely different. Its either grey or white.Sometimes when i click, someother part is painted or healed.I have lost 1GB ram but still i have 2GB on win7. And threre are no displacement maps as well. No one knows about this healing problem, i had this problem in ps7 as well but then i was using win XP on the other computer wich had only 128 ram. Plz help as only few days are left.

Wat else u can suggest sir?
I apologize for the basic nature of the following, but let's make absolutely sure you're using the Healing Brush tool as expected.
1.  Save this small JPEG image on your hard drive, open it in Photoshop, and zoom to 200%.
2.  Select the Healing Brush tool (not Spot Healing Brush):
3.  Set a brush size a little larger than the dark spot on the boy's face, and make it a hard edged brush:
4.  Hold down the Alt key, choose a location nearby to sample FROM, and click down/up the left mouse button, then let up the Alt key.
5.  Move the cursor over the spot and click down the left mouse button.  You should see the pixels from the source location cloned, but the color won't match:
6.  When you let up the mouse button then move the mouse away, the Healing Brush will complete the operation by matching the spot color to the surroundings:
Where does what you see differ from what's shown above?

  • CS4 Healing Brush is leaving grey instead of sourced color

I'm having trouble with the CS4 Healing Brush. In the past, when I used the alt key to source the flesh color of a person's face and then applied it to another area to even out what I had already cloned with the cloning brush, it always worked great. But now the healing brush lays down a greyish color, totally ruining the flesh color. I'm wondering if I accidentaly hit a key somewhere and changed a setting. I can't find anything that alters the color of the healing brush. And anyway, it should be the color I choose with my alt key.
Someone, please help! I used my healing brush a lot, in conjunction with my cloning tool and It has always been very successful up to now.

Yes, I did have the mode set to something else - luminosity. I changed it to normal and it works! Thanks for your help.  I must have been experimenting with something else recently and forgot to change it back).
    Thanks again!

  • Healing Brush use has a grey smudgy cast

I am using CS4, rev 11.0.2, on a Win XP Pro, SP3 system with 2GB of ram. I use the healing brush, with normal mode, sampled, aligned, and set to current layer, because that is where I am working,
I Alt-click to set a sample point in an area with no obvious cast. I then go to heal a nearby area by left clicking and painting with one pass through the area to be healed. The area looks healed until I release the left mouse button. The area's healed color then takes on a grayish cast, although otherwise it has been "healed". The imperfections are gone, but the area appears grayish.
What am I doing wrong. I reset the Preferences, but that did not help.

I don't think I want the Clone Stamp tool (I tried it and it does seem to help.) I am trying to follow a Kelby video tutorial titled "Mastering Layers in CS4" by Matt Kloskowski (spelling?) and am working on lesson 20, Retouching with Layers. As nearly as I can see from the video, my settings are the same as his, except he does not get the gray cast, and I do.

  • Healing Brush does not work

When I use the healing brush, I see the white paint, but when I click and let go, nothing happens.  I am on a Mac.

the tool appears in some parts of the image, in other parts it is a little hand, or a  little microscope.
The tool should be the spot tool no matter were you are at on the image.  The hand and the magnifying glass should only appear on the image during use of the spot tool when you hold the space bar down so you can zoom in and out and move the zoomed image around.  I have seen comments of this problem of the cursor only being correct on a part of the image but I don't know what the solution is.  Sorry!!

  • Elements 8 & 64-bit windows 7--editor shows a bandaid for healing brush; how do I get the circle?

Previous versions of elements would show brush sizes with a circle. Using brackets, you could see the size
increase/decrease. Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size. Also, if I set text size to large, some tools show as 3, i.e., 3 hands, 3 bandaids, etc. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution? I'm using a laptop with Windows 7, 64-bit. Microsoft says the program is compatible.

Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size.
Make sure that Edit > Preferences > Displays And Cursors > Painting Cursors is set to Normal Brush Tip.  If that doesn't help, try deleting the Editor's preferences:

I set text size to large, some tools show as 3
This is a known bug in PSE on Windows 7 -- you have to change the Windows display DPI (text size) to less than 150%.

  • Photoshop CS5 Spot Healing Brush only blurs

Here's a before and after shot.  I recently upgraded from CS3 and the spot healing brush always worked great.
Now when I use it, whether or not I use content aware fill, it leaves a blurred residue of what I was trying to remove.
As an aside, the Content Aware Fill leaves a similar residue, enough to make it effectively unusable.
I have included a sample photo of the spot healing brush problem.  Left side is before and right side is after.
I just wanted to get rid of the electrical wall socket.  You can see that it's not working.  I am running windows 8 in a 64-bit environtment and running the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.5
Any assitance anyone is able to afford me is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with your choice of Spot Healing Brush for this image. I cropped your screenshot to the "BEFORE" image, removed the "BEFORE" type (with the SHB) and scaled to 600% to match your original document.
A dab of a 0% hardness 500 pixel Spot Healing Brush in Ps CS5.1 on OS X 10.6.8 worked perfectly. However, I would have made a vertical stroke with the brush at about 80% hardness and about 200 pixels, which also works for me.
Maybe your SHB is working in "Create Texture" mode despite specifying "Proximity Match" in Options bar. Try resetting the SHB by right-clicking its icon at left of Options bar and picking "Reset Tool" from the menu that appears.

  • Problem with Healing Brush Align Function

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks

It really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page.  Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush?  I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels.  If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing.  I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:

  • PS CS6 spot healing brush stopped working.  followed online instructions but it did not work

I followed online instructions for resetting preferences and tools, but the spot healing brush no longer works.  Help!

What operating system are you using?  Did Preferences definitely reset?  Did you see this dialog box
Do you definitely have the Spot healing brush selected? (top of the fly out list)
What is the brush mode in the Options bar?  If anything but Normal, change it back to Normal.
Are you able to select the tool and it does not work, or can't even select it (greyed out)?
If you are able to select the tool, do you see the little no-go icon when trying to use it?  (Circle with diagonal bar)
Any information that remotely useful will go a long way to helping us find an answer.

  • Spot healing brush with content aware or proximity match?

I want to do the following:
    1. get rid of wrinkles, blemishes and dark circles under the eyes
What is the difference between using the content aware option and the proximity match option with the spot healing brush? Aren't they both blending surrounding pixels to get rid of the blemishes, wrinkles and dark circles?
    Thanks.

Proximity Match is how the Healing Brush works, it takes the surrounding pixels and blends them together with the underlying stuff. Content Aware on the other hand tries to recreate the texture based on the surrounding pixels so it doesn't blend with the pixels that you just painted over. Try both, see which one produces better results for you.

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush

I did not realize I made any changes but my Clone Stamp nor my Healing brush have any effect & the circle is white. How do I reset to default or correct his problem.
    Dave,

It's absolutely notz clear what you are referring to. You have not provided any system info or details about your current settings for these tools. For all we know, this could be a trivial graphics hardware acceleration issue, so as a first step try to turn off those options in the prefs.

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Problem with Advanced Healing Brush on LR 5

I am experiencing a problem with the Advanced Healing Brush  on LR 5. Using, say, the Heal option, when I have marked the area I want to heal, and then move to the source I want to copy, I cannot get the colour of my selected source point to remove the heal spot.
I have looked at a number of tutorials and working comments on using this function, and I am pretty sure that I am following the correct procedure for using the Advanced Healing Brush. I have the same problem when I try to use the Cloning option - the colour just does not fill the area I want to fix.
Is there possibly a bug hanging around?  Can anyone give me any possible solutions to my problem?  I so want to try out this terrific new feature in LR 5.

    Thanks for your response
    I attach 2 screenshots
Screenshot1  - See the orange tip of a feather behind the kid's head - I want to remove this with the heal option in the Spot Removal tool
Screenshot2 - I have demarcated a piece of the feather with the spot tool and have chosen the source color of the wooden bench
I was expecting the demarcated area to have adopted the chosen source color, but it hasn't, by a long shot. I've tried evry which way to get it to work, but no luck.
I even tried using the Clone option, choosing the same source color and painting over the orange feather, but that also didn't work.
I look forward to your comments
Sorry - forgot to add the images

  • Healing Brush's sampler remains active, wreaking havoc

I am a first-time user of Photoshop Elements (8, just arrived today), but I think I've discovered a bug:
When I try to use the Healing Brush, I Alt+Click on an area I want to copy, and then begin painting over the blemishes. However, the pixels replacing the blemishes are NOT what I clicked on, but are constantly changing, and I see a second cursor over to the right that is sampling pixels as I paint/heal. If the second cursor (which moves in lockstop with my mouse movements and the cursor I'm controlling, but off to the side) moves over a black spot, my brush paints black; if it moves over a thick line, a thick line is painted in the area where I want to "heal."
Is this an undocumented feature, a new bug in APE8, or what?
IOW, rather than continually applying the same thing (what I Alt+Clicked on), the Healing Brush is mirroring whatever the "ghost" cursor is over.

You have the overlay option turned on. When you drag rather than click, the healing brush and the clone stamp will automatically sample in a pattern following the movement of the brush, beginning where you alt clicked. You can turn the overlay off in the options bar, but you can't keep these tools from going into aligned mode when you drag. (The overlay is new; the aligned-when-dragging behavior isn't.)
The dark area under the cursor is to show you your stroke more carefully. It has no effect on the final result any more than the marching ants type outline in previous versions. It's just a visibility aid.

  • Will upscaling or using clone stamp/healing brush to upsize give better resolution?

I'm designing a 5.25" square CD cover using a rectangular image and the resolution needs to be min. 300ppi to print .  The artist sent me the art image (painting) from her camera as a jpeg and it goes to photoshop as a large (approx 20" X 24") file at 72 ppi.  To change the ppi to 300 without resampling (I've been told this is best), the image becomes too narrow (4 1/2") and too high (5.9").
I don't want to crop because I don't want to lose content.  I want the image to completely cover the CD cover  And I want to keep the same proportions for certain parts of the image.  So I believe my two best options are as follows:
    1.  Bring the image to 300ppi with the measurements above, protect certain parts of the image on an alpha channel, content aware scale the rest of the image wider to make it square and then resize down a bit for the CD cover or
    2.  Bring the image to 300ppi and then use the clone stamp and healing brush tool or content aware fill (doesn't work so well on this image) to duplicate and extend the sides of the image to widen and square it and then resize down a bit for the CD cover.
Does anyone know which of these options will give the best resolution?  Is upscaling more likely to cause pixelization than the other option?  Is there a better way?  Should I do options 1 and 2 to the large 72 resolution image instead of bringing it to 300ppi first and then upscale or clone stamp--would that give better results?
Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

You've said that you don't want to crop, and you want to cover the entire CD cover. That leaves you with two choices. Extend the short side(s) via cloning, content aware fill, etc. or stretch the image in one direction, either with the standard free-transform or with content aware transform. See what looks best. Your resolution will be fine. You can res up if you need to. The amount you're short will not matter here. Leave room for bleed - usually 1/8".

  • Problem Defining Source in CS5 for Clone Stamp and Healing Brush

I am struggling to define the source point for clone stamp or healing brush in Photoshop CS5. When I first installed the program it was working just as the instructions were set out in the help menu (e.g. alt click to define the source and then move the cursor to find the area to fix). I don't know what has happened, or if I've accidentally re-set something, but now when I 'alt-click' the entire photo is selected, and even when I let go, there is a layer consisting of the entire photo (not just one point) that moves over an exact copy of the same photo underneath. This happens regardless of whether I've created an extra adjustment layer. Help! (it used to work just fine. I don't know what I've done to change it)

Ok I am not sure what you are trying to do, but I believe it is to repair or correct some anomoly on an image you are working on.
With CS5 there is the patch tool the healing brush tool and the new spot healing tool (very cool of you have not played with it yet.)
I think what you are looking at, The "Clone Stamp" is not the tool you are looking for. the clone stamp esentually does exactly what you are talking about. It clones the layer you have highlighted so when you run your brush it paints that image.
The healing and redeye removal tools are all one grouping right click on the brush to make your choice.
    I hope this helps.
