Healing brush question
Hello:
I'm a newbie and have gone thru the tutorials and was trying to use the healing brush to get rid of some blemishes on image, and while messing around I lost my "circle". It changed into a light cross and I can't figure out how to get the "circle" back. Any suggestions?? I clicked the healing brush several times, but it won't come back. I'm using Elements 5.
Tks for any help!
Connie
Hello:
Guess who?
Well, I had this problem before and thought I had a resolution. Now it's back again! When I use the spot healing, my cursor is a cross instead of a circle. Last time I just zoomed in on the image, and the circle came back. It's not working this time. I have changed the brush size, and zoomed in and out, and nothing changes it back to the circle. Any suggestions?
Tks!

Spot/Healing Brush Tool?
I have used the Spot/Healing Brush in Lgtrm3 and now have Lgtrm 5; however, my Spot/Healing Brush in 5 does not work. I will click on the healing brush then adjust my brush size then click on the spot, then click "done". Nothing happens. Am I missing a step or is it the program?
Gentle TeacherRikk,
Thanks for the help. I didn't realize that there was an opacity slifer for theSpot Brush. I see that if I increase the feathering there are times when it seems to leave a ghost. Any ideas? Also, When removing spots why would you use a feather edge as opposed to a hard one and how much feathering should a person use? I realize that these questions may require more time than you have but any comment or suggestion would be appreciated. -
Just a quick question. Am currently using Photoshop 7, and don't recall if it's possible to change the color of the healing brush outline. When I use the healing brush, the outline of the brush size is a light blue color. I'd be able to see it much better if it were, say, bright red or lime green. Is it possible to change the color of the outline? Changing the cursor to precise, etc, doesn't help, as it's still that annoyingly difficult to see light blue color. Suggestions?
There is no way to alter the color of the cursor on a PC. It will change a bit, depending on the background over which it's used, but all that you can directly affect is the "look" of how the cursor displays.
If you are loosing it, you can hit Ctrl to help locate it, or hit the Spacebar and look for the "hand."
Good luck,

Spot healing brush tool luminosity not working as expected?
I have a question about the content aware spot healing brush tool:
The normal and replace mode work just fine as expected... the color mode does indeed a fine job fixing the color cast of i.e. small green or purple lens flares, by picking up the surrounding color.
The next mode after color, called luminosity, should work in the same fashion: it should pick up the surrounding brightness (luminosity), and adjust the relative brightness of the area to be patched (i.e. reduce the brightness of a small lens flare, and preserve the texture underneath).
Instead, luminosity doesn't work much different than the normal mode, it creates a new texture (based on content aware or surrounding area), and thereby destroying the original texture, instead of just fixing the local brightness.
My question for Adobe: is this behavior intentional? or was the luminosity mode "overlooked" by accident? Here are some examples of how the brush is working in a real world example:
As I have mentioned, normal, replace, and color work exactly as expected. color in LAB mode works even better than in RBG mode.
what is not working as (at least by me expected) is luminosity mode (even if the color mode brush is used first). I thought/had hoped for that the luminosity mode would work some magic without creating new textures (the color mode is only very very lightly adding a new texture).
I just wanted to hear what the logic behind this mode is... (and possibly find a 1-2 click tool to fix those lens flares.) -
Help CS5 content aware healing brush
Sorry for the dumb question folks. I just upgraded and when I click on my healing brush, I do not have a Content Aware option. What am I doing wrong. The porgram defaults to asking me to option click to determine what to use. I am running CS5 on and Imac.
Thanks for the help. The content aware option is for the spot healing brush, not the healing brush.

Problems using the Spot Healing Brush
I've tried to use the spot healing brush on a number of photos but it doesn't work at all - I've watched the video tutorial, but wehen I try and use it nothing happens - it appears to be the only part of Lightroom 5 that doesn't work.
How can I solve this problem?Keith,
This is what happens when I try and use the Spot Healing Brush:
I can select spots to heal/delete/duplicate - both single and multiple
After selection and hitting "done" nothing happens.
Consequently the spots I jhave tried to heral appear on the exported picture.
I would expect the Spot Healing Brush in Lightroom 5 to acxt the same as in Adobe Photshop Elements 10 - ie. you see the spot disapear, but for some reason it is not.
Hence the question, as I am wondering whether I'm doing something wrong-I've wateched the tutorial and it doesn't give me any clues as to whether I am doing anything wrong to erase/remove the spots. -
Pen tool/path and content aware spot healing brush to remove cables (CS5)
Tried to remove some cables from an image using Russel Brown's video making use of the pen tool/path and the spot healing brush with content aware. I'm pretty sure I followed his tutorial exactly but it did not work satisfactorily. Are there any other tweaks I should be using to remove these cables and replace them with the background details?
Yes to all.
Silkrooster - Looks great! However, I believe spot healing brush was the first I tried and got smudgy results, especially in area of the locks where there is a lot of detail behind the cables. Found the patch tool works best, but not where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.
Fosse - Well, the bow of the ship going through the Panama Canal at 6 AM in the morning is a popular place, very crowded, and not one of them a photographer. I was lucky enough to get the last spot which was dead center, but in front of the cables. I tried to prevail on some people next to me to trade spots, but none were willing ($##$!!!&& b---ds) and they didn't even have cameras. However, will keep your suggestion in mind about taking two shots for the next time...and will have to get up earlier.
I think if I want to really make this work, I will have to do a lot of work, probably using a combination of all these methods.
Thanks to you all.
By the way, Re my question on screens without a reply button...when I click on a response, it appears without any reply button. How do I get a screen showing the reply button without entering a new question, cancelling out of it, and then clicking on a response, which is the only way I found to get a screen showing the reply button. -
Advanced Healing Brush on Laptop Forward Slash " / "
Using the healing brush on a LapTop how do I switch between the several alternatives/ results. I have seen that presing " / " offers other results. But in a laptop you don´t have the "/ key" (only shown on top of the "7", so what key I need to press?
Sorry for the stupid question
RobertoIt sounds more like a hardware problem with how your keyboard is used to get that character. Because you need to press shift key with the 7 Lightroom may see it as either Shift-7 or Shift-/ neither of which is what you want.
1) Try pressing the Fn key together with the zero key. As there is another / key available there on your keyboard (the tiny symbols in bottom right corner)
Not sure though if your Fn key will act either as a toggle letting you use each of those characters in the bottom corner or if it is just press and hold it then press the desired other key.
2) Look for Windows software that may allow you to reprogram/reassign just one key (ie the upside down ? ) that you could enable while using Lightroom and then disable when using other apps. (something like "keyboard layout manager" never used this myself... so just a possible solution)
3) Possibly change the Lightroom shortcut key to something different than / key... look at the some of the solutons to do this mentioned in Julieanne Kost's Blog: http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2012/02/lr3-customizable-keyboard-shortcuts.html
Ideally #1 would be best fix.

PS CS5 Extended on Windows
When trying to use the clone stamp and/or healing brush as soon as I move the cursor from the toolbar over to the image I get an exact copy of the existing layer that moves around the window with the movement of the clone stamp/healing brush. This just started tonight. What's causing this weird behaviour? What are the settings in Window > Clone Source?

Photoshop CC and 2014 spot healing brush tool causing blue screen on windows 8.1
Hi,
The problem is when I'm using spot healing brush tool soon as apply it it causing fatal error on my windows. I have all suite up to date.
please advice.First thing to do is check you have all the latest device drivers for all your devices and all windows 8 updates. Printer drivers, Display Drivers, Network drivers etc. It is not possible for an Application program like Photoshop.exe to cause a Blue Screen. However Applications use devices and device drivers are able to do things application programs can not do.

Previous versions of elements would show brush sizes with a circle. Using brackets, you could see the size
increase/decrease. Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size. Also, if I set text size to large, some tools show as 3, i.e., 3 hands, 3 bandaids, etc. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution? I'm using a laptop with Windows 7, 64-bit. Microsoft says the program is compatible.Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size.
Make sure that Edit > Preferences > Displays And Cursors > Painting Cursors is set to Normal Brush Tip. If that doesn't help, try deleting the Editor's preferences:
http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Delete_the_Editor’s
I set text size to large, some tools show as 3
This is a known bug in PSE on Windows 7 -- you have to change the Windows display DPI (text size) to less than 150%. -
Photoshop CS5 Spot Healing Brush only blurs
Here's a before and after shot. I recently upgraded from CS3 and the spot healing brush always worked great.
Now when I use it, whether or not I use content aware fill, it leaves a blurred residue of what I was trying to remove.
As an aside, the Content Aware Fill leaves a similar residue, enough to make it effectively unusable.
I have included a sample photo of the spot healing brush problem. Left side is before and right side is after.
I just wanted to get rid of the electrical wall socket. You can see that it's not working. I am running windows 8 in a 64-bit environtment and running the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.5
Any assitance anyone is able to afford me is greatly appreciated.

A dab of a 0% hardness 500 pixel Spot Healing Brush in Ps CS5.1 on OS X 10.6.8 worked perfectly. However, I would have made a vertical stroke with the brush at about 80% hardness and about 200 pixels, which also works for me.
Maybe your SHB is working in "Create Texture" mode despite specifying "Proximity Match" in Options bar. Try resetting the SHB by right-clicking its icon at left of Options bar and picking "Reset Tool" from the menu that appears. -
Problem with Healing Brush Align Function
I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
Many ThanksIt really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page. Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush? I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels. If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing. I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:
