Health App: Basic Step Counting?

Do I need any external hardware to have my steps or runs measured in the health app? I can't seem to set anything up...

I have iPhone 5s iOS 8.0.2 and the steps are being counted for me. I have no other hardware for step counting.
Open health app and check health data tab -> fitness -> steps or walking + running distance
Though, if you are dissatisfied, you might search for something additional in app store.

  • Health App not showing correct steps

    Hi,
I have two health apps installed on my 5S, Argus and Myfitnesspal. Both of them and the Health app have been counting steps successfully and all agreed with each other.
For the last week the Health app has been showing far less steps (and Walking + Running Distance) than the other two and less than I have really walked. For instance today I have walked 2.9 km to work, walked at lunchtime and on my home yet the Health app is showing only 1,760 steps (1.27km) while the other apps are showing over 10,400 steps, which I believe to be accurate.
As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings, has anyone any suggestions please?
    John

I take it you have already gone into the Health app and set up your Medical ID card, correct?
The Medical ID card will show up on the Lock Screen password entry screen when Emergency option on the bottom left-hand side of the screen is clicked.
It does not show up anywhere if you do not have a passcode lock on the screen.
    Cheers,

  • How Health App chooses between Apple Watch and iphone

For step counter, the Health App seems to pick up both steps measured by the Watch and iPhone. Even I put Watch on the top of the phone as the source, the Health app picks up duplicated data from Watch and iPhone if I carry both of them. Is there a way to fix that? Cause the data actually is very misleading.
PS. Another interesting thing is that sometimes watch and iPhone measure the same number of steps and sometimes they don't and my little test shows that iPhone actually more accurate.

I have the same issue, but my iPhone actually has fewer steps counted. I did a dumb test to count steps myself and looks like my iPhone has more accurate steps. The thing bothering me most is the Health app picks steps from iphone and watch. It doesn't recognize sometimes the data is duplicated.

  • Apple watch and iPhone show different step counts

When I look at the activity app on my watch and on my phone, they show a different number of steps. For the most part i've been walking with both my phone and watch, so I'm wondering why the number doesn't sync between the two. Obviously on the phone its including some additional steps that it is counting that the watch didn't get. I have not calibrated it yet (doing a workout with the GPS on the phone). When I look at the raw data int he Health app, the phone is obviously counting a couple more steps each time. Is this something other people are encountering or will it fix once I've calibrated it?

  • Is Nike Fuelband supposed to link to Health App?

My understanding was that the Nike Fuelband would link to Health app so that I could have my fitness tracking data in one place.   After 8.0.1 I expected the unit to link, and it didn't.  I contacted Fuelband support and they said "the problem is on Apple's end."  I don't know exactly what that means.   Any information?

It isn't the Health app that's counting your steps. It's the M7 co-processor that's built into the phone. The Health app just reports the data. To the best of my knowledge, there's no way to disable the co-processor. There is also no way to prevent the data from being transferred to the Health app.
Perhaps if you can explain why you want to do this, someone can offer additional suggestions.
    Best of luck.

  • Health app double counting steps?

I have a Withings Pulse activity tracker and it is now synced with my phone and the Withings app to help track my steps throughout the day.  I've noticed that the Health app itself tracks my steps in intervals throughout the day and it seems the Withings app only syncs steps at midnight each night.  I'm wondering if I'm ultimately getting double-credit for steps every day or if Health somehow is able to cancel out its steps once it sees that steps sync in from another app.  I wish there was a way to turn off the internal step counter in iOS8 but I haven't found one yet.  Curious if anyone here has been experiencing this with other fitness bands/activity trackers?

I am having the same issue as well. I don't have any activity tracker but I keep my phone on me at all times and use it as a tracker. It seems that withings app keeps track of the steps and so does the phone on its own.. If you allow withings app to to sync with health app to me it seems health app uses info from whatever iphone tracks than adds data from withings on top of it.. For examples woke up today and after hour or two withings app said I did about 330 steps. Which would make sense. However in the health app it's showing 670..... why allow other apps to use steps feature if you can't disable iPhone steps tracking, since it will only double up steps?. God forbid I give another app access to step counting. It will seem like I ran a marathon yet I nearly got off the sofa.

  • Health app, count steps but not count distance and running

    Hi,
After update 8.2, health app not count distance and running.
Only count steps, today have 2.951 steps but total distance is 0,01km
    Somebody has the same problem?
    Thanks

    I found a workaround!
Launch Health, open Walking+Running Distance, tap Share Data, and check all apps in here, find them, (backup if you like, ) delete them, and done!

  • Health App step count issues

I noticed on 12/27/2014 that I had a huge spike in total steps recorded by the health app on my 6. It recorded 18,298 steps at 07:35 !
The screen shots below show that the app created this record. I am not using any other external devices to track data at this time, but how it can possibly record 18 thousand seems as if something major is wrong.
Has anyone had similar issues ?

The iPhone measures both steps and distance separately. It measures distance using GPS functionality and steps using the accelerometer. So it doesn't need to know step length to find distance. It DOES know it, however; under Location Services there is a function called "Motion Calibration." That's what its for.

  • Problem with steps in health app!!

Hello guys, i have problem with my health app, i enable steps in the app but it doesnt count even a single step, it says "No Data". I searched in the Internet the way i can enable steps and did exactly what it says but nothing. Can someone help?

you can use 3rd party apps to monitor your activity, but this will drain you iPhone Battery significantly more than if using the integrated Motion coprocessor.

  • Steps and Health App

Are there any apps that will sync steps in the health app? I do not always have my phone on me and I want my steps to be counted. I appreciate any help. I know fitbit will not.

  • Health. Polar M400 steps and iphone step counter both being added.

HHealth app prioritising is not working.   I am unable to disable iPhone step counter and it is adding to my polar hrm watch - M400.   I wear my watch all the time but do not carry my iPhone 6 plus all day.   For instance I do not have it with me while working out on a treadmill.   How can I stop Health app from using my iPhone data?   I have tried to see if all the data is visible and see a blank screen.  It is very frustrating and Apple needs to fix this.

  • Health app measuring each step separately?

I went for a walk today (approx 1 mile) and when I finished I checked the health app to see the distance.  All I see are hundreds of entries with very small distances.  Looking at the number of steps reveals that no more than 11 steps were recorded together, yet I walked at a very consistent pace without stopping at all. Is this normal? Shouldn't the app be able to tell that the entire walk was all one event?

I have the same problem. I have iOS 8.0.2 and a new iPhone 6. If I walk continuously, I see it is logging a few steps a number of times each minute. The total step count seems way off, and the daily miles walked also seems to be way high. I keep the phone in a front pocket. I don't know whether the hardware sensor for counting steps is defective, or if the Health app software is defective.

  • Health App Turn Off Steps

How do I turn off steps monitoring? Don't want it nor need it and helps in draining the battery faster. Turning off Motion Calibration in Location Services doesn't help.

  • Health app not counting calories - "No Data"

Recently purchased an iPhone 6 and have updated to iOS 8.2. The Health app is counting steps and walking & running distance, but Active Calories and Resting Calories display "No Data". I have entered my weight, height, age and sex. Am I missing something here? Is the Health app not supposed to automatically calculate and record calories burned?

As far as I know, automatic step tracking is only available for iPhone 5S or higher due to M7/M8 motion co-processor.
Edit: Confirmed by an article on 9to5mac.
''Users will find that the M7 is able to pre-populate the Health app with a full week of data.
Adding on-device tracking support to the Health app is a significant addition from Apple as iPhone 5s (and future iPhone) customers will no longer even need to integrate any App Store apps or hardware devices to begin using the software.'
