Health issues with iMac

Hello,
i own an iMac 27" since late 2009, used it almost every day since buyed and pretty satisfied with this machine.
But time showed already the dents on it, dust is behind the glass and the hard drive is already scratching his age
But it still works like a charm.
Beside this all, and before continuing with my story, i just want to ask Apple, where and whom can i talk at in terms of human health issues and Apple products ?
Best regards,
Ben

  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.

  • Performance issues with Imac intel 2011 27 inch..

    I have an 2011 imac 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM.
Since a few months i noticed performance issues with FCPX, where before it would run through video it shows sometimes the color ball. Now the computer is slow in starting up and shutting down also. Ran disk utility but to no avail. I am now considering reinstalling mavericks.
    But I ran etrecheck.
here are the results, please who can help me? I use this computer to edit and about everything else.

  • Issues with iMac freezing using Mail, Safari, Chrome

I'm having issues with my iMac freezing, forcing me to hard restart my computer each time. I think I've had to powered down via power button altleast a twenty times today and yesterday. I've restarted 4 times just trying to finish this post
It seemed like I was only freezing using Safari at websites like facebook and youtube.com. So I switched to Chrome, which lasted a few hours until I started freezing on that as well.
I logged on as a Guest account and they seemed to be working fine. I thought Flash may be the issue so I re-installed but no dice. I emptied cache, cleared history from each browser, etc -- no help.
Then today I started freezing just using mail. While typing a message, auto correct attempted to correct a word and my system completely locked up from that.
I have plenty of hard drive space, RAM isn't an issue either.
Here's some of my system log just before one of my recent freezes:

I don't have much experience translating any of what I just pasted, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I uninstalled the Glims plug-in on safari, and that's seemed to cure a little bit of the problem with safari. But I'm still getting hang-ups and freezes. I'm not even noticing a pattern anymore with which apps and so forth are causing it.

  • Anyone else having issues with iMac built-in microphone?

My mom's brand new 24" iMac (running the latest version of Leopard) keeps having issues with the built-in microphone going dead. It can be resurrected with a restart and PRAM reset (command-option-P-R), but it is kind of annoying to have to do this every time she wants to Skype or iChat. Any ideas what might be causing this? She runs a fairly clean system with few peripherals or third-party software (except occasionally an external FW drive for backups, a Blu-Ray burner [not connected at the same time], and Toast). Thanks.

Even on restart with nothing else running, she can go into the System Preferences/Sound/Input and try testing the microphone and it is DOA. We did go through all of the prefs in Skype and they are all set right, she does try the Sound Test call in Skype to see if her audio is working and that is usually the indication that something is not right. Her broadband connection varies too much to have iChat work reliably if at all. She will be installing Snow Leopard soon, and I read that iChat only requires 300kbps bandwidth as opposed to 900kbps under Leopard so there is a possibility that there will be an alternative to Skype in the near future.
All her updates are installed. Repairing permissions was done less than a month ago, but it is worth a try again. Also will have her fire up Activity Monitor to see if there is anything else taxing the CPU. I am 2000 miles away so it is sometimes hard to maintain this machine properly from a distance.
Thanks for your input in trying to solve this mystery. BTW what do you think of using an external dedicated microphone? Kind of defeats the purpose/beauty of having it built-in with the iMac...

  • Starting issues with iMac 27 i5 quad after crucial RAM expansion

I have read through a few threads regarding issues with crucial RAM upgrades in iMacs but they don't quite match what I am experiencing.
I have installed 2 x 2 GB Crucial RAM (manufacturer 0x80CE) in addition to the pre-installed 4GB. The iMac works fine without any glitches, freezes or crashes. However, when I try to start it up in the morning I can hear the HD starting up and stopping once. The start chime doesn't sound and the display stays black. I take out the 4GB and the computer starts up without any problems. I then switch it off again, install the other 2 RAM again and lo and behold: all works fine. Until the next morning. I do not entirely disconnect the iMac, which is an Apple refurbished machine, I just switch it off.
The first time that happened, I thought it was another problem like USB, bluetooth etc. So I systematically disconnected and reconnected all peripherals, I even used a USB mouse and keyboard and tried to start up from the restore DVD. So I went through all that pain.
If there is an existing thread I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction because I couldn't find anything like this on this forum.

Did you test all 4 modules one at time in a top slot as suggested, to see if they are all working?
    ● If any one of the modules fail to properly boot the iMac, factory or crucial then do not reinstall it into the iMac.
    ● If all of the modules individually boot the iMac, then try reinstalling the Crucial in the top slots, the factory in the bottom slots and Startup the iMac reseting the PRAM.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
+1. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.+
    +2. Turn on the computer.+
+3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.+
+4. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.+
    +5. Release the keys.+
Now then if the iMac is not booting from all 8GB of RAM, then there is a compatibility problem with the Crucial RAM and you need to contact Crucial and tell them that there Ram is not working with your Factory RAM.
Why would you only want RAM in the bottom slots, I thought the idea here was to upgrade from 4 to 8GB?
The article clearly states that the iMac will not boot with only 1 module in a bottom slot.

  • Security Issues with iMac OS X

I thought that with previous OS X versions, the problem was bad enough when you set the 'Stealth Mode' to 'On' & the status was not reflected within the System Profiler utility.
Now it seems more security blunders....You're able to amend Login Items, e.g. select &/or deselect items (within System Prefs, User Accounts) without being asked to re-enter the users password or keychain password.  If someone gained access to a users computer/account (even if it was padlocked) then they're able to amend/delete/select/deselect anything in the 'Login Items' list.
Yet another major security blunder from Apple & I remember it took them months, if not years to resolve the 'Stealth Mode' issue with previous OS X versions.
Since UNIX is/was meant to be one of the most powerful & secure computer operating systems, they've made it look pretty WeaK!

Well duh. That's a bit like saying if someone can start your car then they can change the radio station. If a person has hacked your account to the point where the can amend the Login items list then that is not a security issue, in fact that's the very least of your worries. If they have that kind of access to your machine then they have everything, your data, your passwords, the whole shooting match. So, I wouldn't worry too much that the can remove an item from your Login list.
So, not a security issue, not a blunder. You need to worry about something important.

  • Performance Issues with iMac

    Hi all,
I've done some searching for answers to my problem, but all of the threads I found were a little different than my problem. I've had a 2.0 GHz Aluminum iMac for a little over a year now, and I only have 1GB of RAM in it. I use Mail, iTunes, Safari, and the iLife Suite for the vast majority of my time on the Mac. I back up to a 250 GB Passport drive using TIme Machine, and I was syncing with my .Mac (MobileMe now I guess) account but stopped that because it didn't seem to be working very well. I watch videos on occasion (not very often), and that's about it.
Over the last month I've been experience general choppiness and more and more spinning beach balls as I move between applications. Things seem to speed up once I get into the app and start using it. I leave Mail, Safari, and iTunes open all the time. If I get on the Mac after a while of inactivity, it takes a very long time to pull up one of these applications (like 10 seconds), and I'll experience some choppiness with the Dock bubble animations, Expose, and Dashboard. Once I get going, though, everything seems to respond instantaneously like it used to. I can switch between Mail, Safari and iTunes instantly.
I've tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I disabled MobileMe, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I'm leaning towards a RAM problem since things seem to "warm up" and start working better, but I might just be making that up, I don't know. I'm also thinking that the fact that my iTunes library, Mail inbox, and Safari cache have grown a lot since I've started. My question is, are there good practices I should be utilizing with those three applications to keep this problem at bay? And if you think the problem may be something else, what is it? Are there steps I could take to figure it out what the issue might be? Like, is there a bare-bones configuration I could do, or some kind of performance monitoring app I could use?
Sorry for the long post, but I know it's frustrating to try and troubleshoot these problems without the complete pictures. Thanks to anyone who is able to look at this. Here are some typical stats from Activity Monitor for my machine:
CPU: CPU is almost always 95% idle and only spikes during heavy use
    System Memory:
    Free: 150-250MB
    Wired: 150-200MB
    Active: 500MB
    Inactive: 200-250MB
VM Size: 33 GB (this seems huge to me...)
    Page-Ins: 2.5GB
    Page Outs: 1.89GB
    Swap Used: 1.5GB
    Disk Activity: Occasional Spikes
Disk Usage: 165 GB free of 260 GB
Network: Quiet most of the time, spikes when I download
Process Info (Real Mem, Virtual Mem)
    Safari: 150MB, 1.3GB
    iTunes: 27MB, 1GB
    Mail: 34MB, 900MB
Dashboard, Finder, Dock, Spotlight, etc: 9MB, 800MB

    Hi,
I don't think it's a memory issue... How much available drive space is there? Right or Control click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click: Get Info Click the black arrow where you see: Get Info Where it says: Capacity and Available, make sure your available disk space is a minimum of 10%, 15% is better. Not enough free disk space can definitely be the cause of the problems you are describing.
There's a great disk utility available that can show the size of files and folders to keep track:

  • Syncing issues with iMac, iPad & iPhone 4s

In the last couple of days all 3 devices just magically stopped syncing with each other, I haven't changed any settings at all and have installed all the updates as they have arrived (except Maverics OS) from the day I purchased them...what is happening?
This is extremely frustrating as I use them all every day for work!! It was so refreshing when I purchased them all, and they were working together beautifully, now its just a reminder of what I went from with the Microsoft headaches and 'software updates'...
    Definately unimpressed!!
So what have I done so far to 'get them working' again?
I have checked the settings in iCloud...all the right buttons are 'on' as they should be, on all 3 devices!
I have done a backup into iCloud & onto MyMac, of the iPhone and iPad, and also a backup of the iMac into the Time Capsule.
Not sure what to do from here though...last time this happened it was a couple of weeks before 'everything just magically started working again' and things were somewhat restored.
Does Apple have the occasional 'outage' with the iCloud? Does a server go down somewhere rendering any hours spent on trying to get to the bottom of this issue useless?
Would love to know any answers anyone has...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Second monitor detection and resolution issue with iMac

    Hi All,
long time reader here, got a lot of helpful tips, thanks to all who post!!
I have a 24" iMac, Intel based, with OSX 10.5.8.
I bought a Viewsonic 22" monitor to use along side my iMac when using CS4 and I do a lot of photography. Now the problem is that sometimes my iMac recognizes it as VA2213w and other times it see it as VGA monitor. When is sees it as the VGA monitor the resolution changes a bit, even though it has it on its highest setting 1920x1080 @60hz. My tool pallets on the screen are a bit fuzzy, readable but not the best. I'm using a mini dvi to VGA adaptor as the Viewsonic only has a VGA plug. Could this be the issue? As I have read a lot of the problems here and they seem to be all pointing to the adaptor. If so then why does my iMac sometimes see it as VA2213w monitor and then on other times as VGA. I'm doing nothing to the display other than switching on in the morning.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency! Its driving me mad. I can't seem to get it back to recognize the display as VA2213. I have clicked on detect displays etc etc.
It was working fine all week and then suddenly last night it went back to seeing it as a VGA monitor only. Any help would be appreciated. I have no cursor issues, just the resolution and monitor detection.
    Regards
    Fergul

    Hi All,
Well the issue seems to be the cable. I had an older TFT monitor that I was using and when I bought the above viewsonic, I just simply connected it to the existing cable. It wasn't till I was about to send the monitor back for one that had a DVI connection that I decided to use the VGA cable that came with the new monitor. What can I say, there hasn't been an issue since my last post which was a few weeks ago. Even when the iMac goes to sleep and awaken, no probs. Thanks to those that posted, its appreciated!
    So far so good.
    Take care.

  • Continuing issues with iMac i7

I bought an iMac i7 27" just under a year ago.
Within a month of ownership the cooling fans powered up to 100% and refused to switch off - it was like working next to a couple of hairdryers. (apple support said it was cooling like that because I was watching HD youtube videos....)
I drove to the Apple store about 30mins away and, after a week or so, Apple fixed it.
Then, after a few months when it felt like it was getting a lot hotter than I'd expect the HDD started reporting errors.
I drove 30mins to the Apple store, they confirmed it was failing and after a week or so swapped out the hdd.
Then after another few months of it getting seriously hot the display started freezing with glithes appearing on the screen. Display was unresponsive although the system appeared to be still working.
I drove 30mins to the Apple store two weeks ago, Apple confirmed the graphics card had errors, I epressed my concern about the heat and that it had cooked the system leading to a shortened lifespan. Apple swapped out the gfx card and logicboard.
I've just returned from the Apple store to find that the display port adapter doesn't line up with the casing and I can't plugin my wacom cintiq.
I've lost complete faith in this unit, something else is no doubt going to fail shortly, I don't want to tolerate the condescending platitudes of the phone support  and if I have to drive back to the Apple store I'm likely to have a good go at throwing it through their window.

Thanks for the reply, I lost this post and wanted to update it.
I didn't take out any additional protection plan purely because I've rarely had any failures with computer hardware (been putting together systems since the intel 486 and have a IBM thinkpad over 15 yrs old that's working perfectly). Wasn't long ago that I gave away a perfectly working SE30.
Anyway, update is that I phoned the store who offered to look at it right away if I bought it back. I wasn't in the mood for another drive back to the store - in total I've spent about 3 full days calling support, dropping off and picking up. The store brought it to the store managers attention and also put me through to support advisor and then onto senior tech - they've offered a replacement unit which is good news as I fully believed that this one would fail again and again. Personally I'd rather have just had a working machine from the start but these things happen - considering this was a cascade failure due to over heating issues it would have been more efficient to have done this or a complete repair and soak test from the start. But hey, it's all being sorted and Apple are back in my good books. Thanks for the reply!

  • Issues with iMac on local network

My iMac has started to disappear from my local network and I cannot find the source of the problem. The iMac remains connected to the internet and browsing works fine. Everything appears to be operating as normal from the iMac. Unfortunately Any apps on my iPad however cannot see the iMac and I cannot access Shared hard drive data. Additional home sharing on my iTunes goes down.  This is reproduced on every app I try. (Mainly Air Video and Splashpad)
This problem is intermittent and I cannot resolve it through restarting the iMac or playing with network settings. Turning the iMac off for several hours usually resolves the problem. Occasionally however the problem will resolve itself without warning and everything will connect as they should.
Any assistance in helping me understand this problem and any fixes would be gratefully received.

A couple of things i'd do at this point is to remove all your networks from the preferred network list, then re-add your wi-fi. If that doesn't fix it, i'd do a pram reset. Another couple of troubleshooting steps is to try it in another user and see if it still acts up. Also, try it in safe mode. I do understand that it's intermittent, so some of these steps might take a while to see if it's recreated the issue. Another thing, have you restarted the router?

  • Sleep issues with iMac

I have an iMac, first gen, that when I put into sleep mode, it will wake up right away. All software is up to date, running 10.6.8.

Test after each of the following steps:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Secondary monitor issues with iMac after 10.6.5 upgrade

After the upgrade to 10.6.5 yesterday, my second monitor on my iMac has been turning to snow, and then coming right back to normal about every 10 seconds.
I've tried rebooting with and without the monitor connected, and I'm still getting the same problem.
Anyone one else having this issue?

Tried the Time Machine restore with no luck. The second monitor was still flashing away. Also tried Disk Utility to verify the disk then applied the Combo update. Again no luck.
The only way I was able to fix it was by wiping and reinstalling Snow Leopard from the installation disk. The monitor worked fine until I installed the 10.6.5. update and it went back to the same thing.
I wiped everything again and did the combo update back to 10.6.4. Now everything's working just as it should.
Sounds to me like it's a driver issue... Is there a way to feed back to Apple my model numbers and the problems I'm having? (other than sitting on the phone for hours)

  • Serious issues with iMac, black screen during erase and install-PLEASE HELP

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

I'm afraid that it's a contradiction in terms to talk about an intel iMac G5. What your sister has is an intel machine, and she will find good advice by posting to the [intel iMac Forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1110].
