Hear what I'm playing while recording?

Hey, I was using Amplitube 2 and I really want to be able to hear the processed signal as I am recording.
I am using Amplitube 2 as a VST plug-in added to the track as an effect.
So how do I monitor as I record?
Oh if it helps I'm running Win XP SP2 and using Toneport UX2 as my Soundcard

>I am using Amplitube 2 as a VST plug-in added to the track as an effect. So how do I monitor as I record?
You can monitor the effect if it's added into the channel mixer for a track if you select 'Audition Mix' in the monitoring selection, and also 'Smart Input'.
The only restriction is that whilst you will hear the effect whilst recording, you won't actually
record it like that - it will be recorded flat, as is good practice. This means that you can use your effect to 'inform' your playing, but you still have the ability to make changes as your mix demands. If you recorded the effect in the first place, then obviously you wouldn't have this option - which might mean that you have to record the track again to get it right.
If you have a couple of inputs on your soundcard, then you can obviously connect the output back to the second input and record the effect like that, but I don't think that most people bother.

  • Can't hear what I'm playing while I'm playing

    Hello-
I can't seem to solve what is probably a very simple issue.
I'm plugging my guitar straight into Logic Pro via a 1/4inch-to-USB cable. I can see the audio being recorded, but I cannot hear it while I'm playing or during playback. All non-Logic Pro sounds are audible (turning the computer's volume up and down, other apps, etc.)
Weird thing is: when I unplug the USB-to-guitar cable, I am suddenly able to listen to what I just recorded.
I have tried clicking "software monitoring" and just about everything else in the audio preferences and can't come up with anything. I've tried tweaking my system preferences as well as my audio/midi setup utility, and have gotten nowhere.
If anybody has any suggestions I would be most appreciative because I am stumped.
    Thanks
    -Humanoid.

    Hi,
    No.1 Most FAQ
Logic can only handle one Audio Device. Either the built in Input/Output or an external device (your USB cable is such an external device).
So, while using the external cable, logic can't use another device, namely the built in output.
BUT: There is a solution, which is called "aggregate device". You have to set up this device in your Audio-MIDI-Setup (Applications/Utilities). Go to the menu bar - Audio - open device editor. Klick on the plus sign to add a new device.
Into this virtual device you can install you Guitar USB cable as input and your Mac's built in output as output.
Now restart Logic, go to preferences-audio and select the aggregate device as input (output is always selected together with input).
To record, select the correct input of the aggregate device in case you have added both the USB cable and your built in input / mic.
    Welcome to the show.
And could some forum technician make this thread sticky? But however - even this wouldn't help being asked the same question over and over, would it?

I Recorded 4 audio tracks, could hear it in the headphones while recording. Meters show input. No playback sound. Please Advise.

How can anyone advise on such a cryptic post, all we can do is guess.
Which version of Logic, what audio hardware are you using?
    Have you read the manual?

  • Cant hear track plugins in play or record?

I am running Logic pro 9.
I can select plugins for tracks OK.
When I select play or record I cant hear the plugins?

    O...kay...
Are you talking about instruments on an instrument track (e.g. EXS24), and when you play or record via your MIDI keyboard you are not hearing anything?
Or are you talking about effect plugins on an audio track and you're not hearing the processing?
Are you getting any sound out of Logic at all?
Need a bit more info here...

  • Hearing The Affects Of Audio While Recording

Hey guys...I don't understand why this is happening...Anytime I rig my bass guitar to logic and try to tune it nothing happens on the tuner...but I see there is audio feed jumping up and down on the specific fader. Also when I want to use auto tune...as my singer is singing..she cant hear the affects until AFTER the track is recorded....strange? Please help thank you.
Also...just thought Id throw this out there.... does anybody know what compressor the Logic compressor is modeled after??? because that thing is a beast! I love it---

Turn Software Monitoring on in your audio preferences - now real time signals are fed through Logiv's mixer and you can use plugins in real-time.

  • I can hear clean AND preamp guitar effects while recording

    Hi all,
Just started to use LPX. I am using an Apogee Duet audio interface to record my guitar but notice that I seem to have two sounds overlapping when recording my electric guitar: the preamp effects version (distortion in this instance) and a clean version.
I've looked through my various books etc and can't seem to see how to avoid this so I can just hear the distortion I want while recording - can anyone help??

So you hear the signal both from the Apogee directly (clean) and what comes out of Logic (distorted).
So you must find out how to disable direct monitoring through the Apogee. Sorry, I don't know the Apogee in detail,
but I'm sure it can be done. And take a look here: http://www.apogeedigital.com/knowledgebase/all/input-monitoring-the-apogee-way/

  • How to Hear Metronome in Headphones While Recording Through Audio Interface - Help!

    Hey everybody,
So I've been trying to work through this problem for 3+ hours now and I'm stumped. It's very frustrating as it is such a simple problem. Right now I'm recording acoustic guitar through an audio interface - guitar sound goes to microphone, microphone goes to interface, interface goes to audio jack in Macbook. Pretty simple setup. I can even insert a splitter into the audio jack on the Macbook which will allow me to hear what I am playing through the interface in my headphones, which is what I wanted. However, when I hit record and the metronome starts playing, as I want it to, I can't get the metronome to play through my headphones - they will only play through the speakers. How can I get around this? Is it even possible, or do I need an audio to USB interface so I can have a set audio in (through the USB) and a set audio out (through the audio port)? Again, your help would be much appreciated as I am completely stumped.
    Cheers!

In Logic Pro 9 (and X) you can assign different devices to the In- and Output, so I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to get sound in through the microphone and out through the headphones. You can even combine the ouputs into a Multi-Output device to send the same sound simultaneously to all outputs.
You can also aggregate all your in- and outputs into an Aggregate Device, then you can use any of your outputs and any of your inputs inside the same Logic project (on the channel strips).
Setup in Audio MIDI Setup (separate app, part of any OS X install, can be found in the Applications>Utilities folder)
Setup in Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio>Devices (apart from colorscheme, it's the same in LP 9 and LP X)

  • LogicX Rec Problem. I can't hear while recording no matter I turn on Auto Input Monitoring at menu or channel. On certain songs I could thru AUX to REC, my L7/8/9 procedure. Now, inconsistent, not work. Any help?

    Logic X Recording Problem
I can't hear (ex.) voice back while recording no matter I turn on Auto Input Monitoring at Record Menu or Channel Strip.
On certain old projects I could when thru AUX to REC, which was my L7/8/9 procedure.
Recording takes place on a consolidated session, all audio tracks with no latency, which actually happens only it can't be heard.
Monitoring is very inconsistent and in fact doesn't work at all. Any help?

Correction: actually "thru AUX to REC channel" is not effective.
It's just that I can input monitor thru an extra AUX channel independently of the REC channel.
Sending the source to be recordered to aux and audio rec at same time.

  • Listening While Recording Help?

Hi, I have been useing GarageBand for a while now and have been recording acoustic guitar through both real instrument and electric setting. Now that I'm confident in the program and my musical talent, I want to up the bar a bit by getting a better recourding. The major problem is I would like to listen to myself play while recording. Not being able to hear the effects while playing kinda eliminates the use of them.
Recording is not a prob, but I get all this noise and I can't figure out how to eliminate it. Especially when I use the preloaded amps and stompbox. Its almost like feedback but not really. I can only explain it as white noise, like the amps are turned up to loud or something.
My original setup consisted of acoustic recorded via usb webcam mic into GB. As I said this was sufficant until now.
Things I have done to eliminmate the noise issue:
    * Bought a real microphone connected via built in input cause I thought the webcam mic was either to crappy or to sensitive. *Did Not Work*
*Bought an M-Audio FastTrack connected via USB.
Mic/M-Audio/Mac. Sound not quite as bad but can not hear myself play via headphone jack on M-Audio *Did Not Work*
*Played around with different volume levels on anything I could find dealing with volume. *Did Not Work*
*Various other things *Did Not Work*
How can I eliminate the noise, get a clean recording while at the same time being able to listen and hear effects as I play?

If your able to record through the audio interface, you probably need to turn the monitor on and use the headphones through your computer not the interface. Thats how i do it at least.

You have two basic options. One is to use a commercial screen recording app with access to system audio built into the app and the other is to add a system extension like SoundFlower that allows the QT X screen recorder to access/record the system audio. I use the former so I am not that familiar with SoundFlower but there should be several posts to this forum covering this topic.

  • Cant hear what im recording in realtime on my headphones

hello thank you for taking a look at my post, i use soundbooth for little recording music projects, i know its not for that but i use it because its simple and gets the job done. however i got a BOSS dr. rhythm drum machine DR-770 and i have it plugged into the the 3.5 headphone jack on my drum machine going into my mic jack on my computer and it records perfectly in soudbooth but when i put on headphones i can't hear what im playing in real time.
is there a setting i have to change? something im missing? thank you for reading!

There is no way to do what you want to so. No such app exists and there is no way to connect the two devices via Bluetooth for the purpose that you want.

  • Cant hear song playback while recording with external USB Interface Mic in Garageband

    Hi there
There must be something wrong with my settings in Gargaeband/Mac Sound Settings.
I have Garageband 9 (V5.1) running a song I have already recorded using a USB keyboard.
I want to record using my external mic and my USB Audio Interface, so
I select New Track> Real Instrument
I plug in my Yamaha Audiogram 3 USB AUdio Interface and I get a pop up stating
"Garageband is scanning your system for audio devices, and has detected a device named "USB Audio Codec"
If you want to use this device do not disconnect it during the scanning process.
Do you want to use this devise No/Yes."
I select Yes and INPUT SOURCE changes from
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
    to
    Mono 1 (USB Audio CODEC)
I can see the signal lights lighting up on the audiogram 3 when I talk into the mic, so theres no problem there.
Also when I hit record I can record audio using the mic, and can see the levels (and the audio wave I am creating being drawn on the screen) but I cannot hear the track itself when I am recording using the mic. Nor can I hear the track or the new mic recorded audio AFTER I have hit stop.
The only way to hear the song again with the newly recorded mic track is to unplug the Audiogram 3 (Then I get another Pop-up stating
"The audio device "USB Audio CODEC" has been disconnected!
Do you want to switch to Built-in Audio or quit Garageband?"
    I select USE BUILT-IN AUDIO)
Then the input source changes back to
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
And I can hear the track again.
So my problem as you can see if that I cant hear the track while recording using the microphone with the Audiogram 3.
But I can record video with audio using the audiogram 3 USB Audio Inteface and mic using photobooth when I select change Sound>Input to USB Audio Codec in system preferences
It therefore assume it must be a problem with the internal audio settings of the mac/garageband.
    Can anyone advise?
    thanks!

In order to hear yourself while you are recording, you need to set Monitor to "ON" under the Track Info panel.
Also, what are your sound output settings?  It sounds like you haven't selected the right output source.
If your speakers or headphones are plugged into your audio interface, then you need to go into Preferences -> Audio/MIDI and select your audio interface under Output as well as Input.  If your speakers or headphones are built-in or plugged directly into your computer, then you need to select Built-In under Output.
I have a sneaky feeling that you are in the latter scenario, and that when you plug in your audio interface Garageband is automatically switching both Input and Output over to your interface, which means no sound output as long as the interface is plugged in.

  • I'm trying to record audio into my iPad2 using GarageBand and an iRig, but I can't monitor my tracks at the same time as recording, meaning if I lay down a drum track and attempt to record guitar, I can't hear the drums while recording. Thoughts?

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • I have iTunes 11 and Windows 7. I can't hear what is playing on iTunes.

I have iTunes 11 and Windows 7. I can't hear what is playing on iTunes, even tho I can hear other stuff (eg YouTube) on my PC. I have checked the volume settings on my PC, in iTunes and even in the mini-player - they are all set at 100%. The little diamond at the top is moving, and the equalizer is showing that the music is playing, but I get no sound (music and podcasts). Help!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
