Heating Issue with P4

Hey Everyone
I've been reading alot lately in this forum, and there is lots of good info, but I was hoping that someone can help me out. I recently upgraded my PC, from a P4 2.53 GHZ with a Asus P4PE motherboard with cheap PSU and RAM and case to a Chenbro Xpider Case with 2 fans, 1 front blowing cold air in, and 1 in the back to blow air out, 3.06GhzE Prescott CPU, 2*256 OCS Platinum DDR3200 RAM, Enermax EG365P-VE, and a thermaltake Silent Tower heatsink and fan for CPU. and I also upgraded my IDE cables to the round ones, (don't know what they are really called) but the look good, and the make the air circulate better in the case am sure.
OK with that said, I was able to overclock my CPU from stock to 3.6 by changing my FSB to 240 also changing my DRAM Freq to 333 and changing my DDR voltage to 2.70 and finally the AGP/PCI is set at 67/33.5 the PC is running stable, but when their is a CPU load, like decrypting and playing mp3 with winamp, my CPU temperature goes from 49-50 degrees to 60-61 degree and then my PC just freezes.
Now I tried to lower my CPU speed to 3.25 by going with these settings:
DDR voltage:2.65
FSB: 225
Core Voltage: 1.537 (which I cannot change)
DRAM Freq: Auto
AGP/PCI: 67/33.5
and my PC will not even boot
can anybody help me and give me some suggestion on what speed should I O/C my CPU and keep in mine the temperature issue
thanks

The temperatures you show for are actually OK.
I AGREE, thats not bad really... but properly applied thermal grease will only decrease those numbers
hopefully then you'll be able to keep a decent overclock...
i've found, that when i'm overclocking, and i see a huge difference  in my temps, theres usually something wrong with the way i applied my thermal grease... or like something under the HS that i didn't see
(last time... when trying to get my duron to 2400 stable, i had a tiny speck of metal get in there... the machine would freeze as soon as it entered into cmos setup, no matter the speed....  took HS/F off... found that not much of the core was in contact with the HS, and there was a tiny speck of metal in there.....)
make sure you closely follow the directions on arctic silver website...
applying arctic silver 5 to a P4 is pretty simple... just put a dot in the middle "the superior flow capabilities" or whatever of version 5 allows u just to put a dot in the middle... and it will spread itself out... (with pressure from HS of course
:shrugs: a lot easier than the directions for AMD systems (w/o Heat spreader) i mean... you get used to it... but still... a lot less trouble...

  • After several repairs, still having heating issue with MacBook Pro (mid '09)

EDIT: this post got removed the first time for not being constructive enough. I've now edited the post.
This is going to be a lengthy post, so bear with me.
2 months ago, I suddenly noticed my MacBook Pro (medio 2009, 15", 4GB RAM, GeForce 9400M) heating up a lot harder than usual. I'm familiar with the heating issues these laptops have, but this wasn't normal. Looking at iStat Pro, I saw my fans almost taking off like an airplane at 5700 rpm, while watching only a livestream on my browser. I know Shockwave Flash takes up quite a chunk of your CPU, but I had never encountered this problem beforehand.
The biggest problem wasn't just the heat or the fans, but the fact that my computer also started reacting rather slowly. Sometimes I'd even get beachballed, or the whole browser stopped responding for half a minute...
So I tried to see if gaming was still an option. Of course not. I had been playing League of Legends for several months without any issues. Whilst playing, I'd kick up my fans manually to about 4000 rpm, and they'd stay there throughout the whole game. Now, when I start up the game, it plays smoothly for the first 2 minutes. After the temperatures rise to a critical level, the fans start spinning up to 5700 rpm, and the whole game plays like a powerpoint presentation.
On a sidenote: it sort of 'lags' every 1-2 seconds, and sometimes, after a long period, the game acts somewhat normal again (20 mins). This game uses wine to run, which isn't the most optimal way. So I tried playing Team Fortress 2, too. Probably even worse results! (but again noticeable 1-2 second interval lags)
Before anyone starts screaming: "Don't use your Mac for gaming!" etc., I wish to point out that these two games had been running perfectly for the past few months/years. Something's definitely wrong.
After looking for some solutions myself, I decided to go to an authorized Apple Service in my city. A few days later, they told me my logic board was broken, and I had to pay almost 700 euros ($ 900-1000) to replace it. So I did. I got it back, but it wasn't fixed. Brought it back in. Got it back a week later: "Your new logic board we got from Apple was already broken, but we hadn't noticed. We put a new one in it. It's fixed." Again, same problem.
We're almost 2 months later and 700 euros poorer, still no result. I've brought it in about 6-7 times now, here's a list of what they've tried so far:
    - In total 3 new logic boards
    - New MagSafe (because they discovered it was giving too much power too my laptop)
    - Fresh re-install
    - Replaced RAM
    - Checked fans etc. (they do this by default)
    - A few tests which proved that it was repaired (but I have my doubts with these tests...)
They told me now that it's fixed, and they basically won't look into it anymore. I must contact Apple myself, if I wasn't satisfied. The tests they performed showed no signs of heating issues. (One of the tests was playing 4 1080p movies at the same time. When I watch a 1080p movie on Youtube, my laptop is taking off like a plane) They ran a stress test all night long, showing no temperatures above 98°C. I got it up to 105°C in a few minutes according to iStat Pro.
They advised me to install Mountain Lion, which would make the issues with "high-performance sites" go away. I haven't seen much improvement, though.
This whole experience has been quite frustrating, especially now that I'm gonna need my laptop for University again. Isn't there anything I can do? I've paid almost 700 euros and missed my laptop for 2 months, without any results.
I've got more information regarding the issues if needed, ask away. I'm getting desperate.
I've been browsing around the support communites, and found that a lot of people are having issues since they upgraded to OS X Lion. Could this be the case? Should I try downgrading to Snow Leopard?
I've also found a few topics on refreshing the cooling pasta on the heatsink. Would they have noticed any problems with this after replacing the Logic Board several times? Or should I check it myself? I'm not too keen on opening up my laptop myself...
    Nick.

    Thought of buying Parallels? Fusion?
Might want to see if this gets moved to the MacBook Pro forum.
I'd think Windows 8.1 is smart enough (what I use 90% time since the Dev Preview came out couple yrs ago it seems like) to find the driver.

  • Hinge and heating Issues with my G560

I am facing the following issues with my G560. It was purchased on 11/26/2010.
Overheating - The laptop heats up and turns off after a continuous usage of 2-3 hours.
Hinges - The plastic portion covering the hinges came off within 6 months. I continued using the laptop and now the metal hinge has come out and the wires have come out and I think the hinge may have been broken as well since I see a metal portion protruding below the monitor.
Can someone help me understand how to get these fixed.

    Rajesh,
Welcome to the forum.  I received your private message with additional information and based on your indicated purchase date, the system should be under warranty.
Since you are in warranty, both of these issues should be able to be addressed by service.  The hinge sounds like it should be covered unless the system were dropped or otherwise incurred damage from use.
The number to call for support is 877-453-6686
Please follow up with me by private message if you need more help on this after calling support.
Apologies that you have troubles, but I feel confident that we should be able to resolve them.
    Best regards,
    Mark

  • Heat issues with video import

Ive had my Macbook pro for about 3 weeks now and as far as I can tell its getting hotter (idont know how to find the exact temp but I know hot and my Macbook is!)
The heat has not been an issue until recently. And then when I was using the machine last night to import some video from a mimiDV camera and the heat was simply unacceptable the vent under the screen was so hot it was almost untoucable and also the hard drive was throwing out heat.
Now Im not sure if this has anything to do with the 7200rpm HDD I have installed in the machine but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with video importing.

It has nothing to do with video editing per se. It has everything to do with heat generated from constant hard drive activity and higher CPU utilization. Check temps with CoreDuoTemp both under load and also idle.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29854
You can simulate loads also to get various temp readings.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24941
You can check your hard drive temp with Temperature Monitor.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994
In fact if you start CoreDuoTemp first, shut it off, then run CoreDuoTemp you can see both your CPU and Harddrive temps in your dock or menubar with Temperature Monitor.

  • Heat Issue With Core CPU or Bad Ram?

    Hi Gang
Haven't been here for a while. Hope everyone are doing fine.
This is just a guess, but here's the situation:
Have 2 Dual Core 2.0 G5's, same amount of Ram, same software, Final Cut etc. I use Activity Monitor, Rember, and the free Temperature Monitor. I've had a few isolated cases of core shut down: "You need to restart your computer". Past expereinces have proven this to be on of the CPU's going bad. I have noticed however, that with the same software open, and with the same amount of RAM, I get lower core temperature readings with the reliable G5, and higher temperature readings with the other G5. On the higher end: 143-144 F, and on the lower side: 123-125 F. I also noticed the Blue area gets filled up a lot quicker with the problematic G5, (The Blue is used Ram).
Rember shows no issues in either case ...
Looking to avoid paying the local Apple store $120 for a diagnostic test which may or not point to bad ram, or bad CPU.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you
    Mike

    Hey-
Your high temps aren't that high.
BD is right that your thermal paste could use changing (the stuff is 5 year effective, max), but you really don't have that hot of CPUs.
How about the memory controller? I would be more concerned there.
    What temps show there?
The memory controller is on the back side of the logic board, sandwiched between the PCB and the case. There are heat sinks and a blower, but there isn't a goiod way to avoid plugging it all up with dust.
Maybe time for a good blow job......

  • Z4 Tablet and heating issues with Snapdragon 810 chipset

There is now clear evidence coming out of serious overheating problems with the Z4 phone in Asia, which has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset as the Z4 tablet. These overheating issues have been widely publicised with phones released already with this chipset by other manufacturers. Will Sony guarantee these issues will not occur with the larger Z4 Tablet (it's larger size may help dissipate heat, possibly)? If not, I wonder if I should be cancelling my pre-order

No overheating issues here after two weeks of heavy use. There is a spot that gets rather warm in the top middle (landscape) when really pushing it; but it's no worse than I've experienced with my iPads (for comparison).  Battery life is excellent. I run it without a case, which I highly recommend. The type of plastic they use doesn't mar easily and is comfortable in the hand. I play games on it quite a bit.

  • Heat issue with airport extreme

The top gets hot but the sides stay only warm. The temperature on the top is around 110 F. The unit works very well and I have had no problem with it.I'm worried the high operating temperature will shorten its life.

Too hot to touch would be cause for concern, but 110° isn't abnormal.
From p. 35 of the Airport Extreme Setup Guide:
    About Operating and Storage Temperatures
When you are using your AirPort Extreme, it is normal for the case to get warm. The AirPort Extreme case functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the unit to the cooler air outside.
The case itself is a heat sink, so keep the top clear of other "stuff" (including dust).

  • Major heat issues with first gen Macbook Pro

It sure seems like I should be able to find an easy answer for this, but I can't.
I have (I believe) a first generation Macbook Pro. 2ghz processor, 2gb of RAM (maxed), running 10.5.8.
When running streaming videos on it, the temperature gets absolutely out of control. 194-200 degrees (F) for the CPU, and over 120 degrees on the bottom case. This is WITH the fans going at almost 6,000 RPM, and the computer is elevated at the corners in order to allow for airflow underneath.
There's a lot of separation between the top and bottom pieces near the bottom left of the computer (the corner near the Z key), if that means anything. What the heck is happening here, and can I do anything to fix this without spending hundreds of dollars at a repair shop?

  • Heat issues with Equium M70-173

    Need some advise.
Have in last couple of weeks found that the whole left side and sometimes to the middle of the laptop its got very hot to touch.
Does any one have any clue what could cause this?

    Hi mate,
I think it could be a cooling system which is full of dust. If the cooling system is clogged with dust then the machine cannot transport enough heat of your machine which was generated by the CPU and the graphics card. The result of this could be software errors, overheating and complete hardware malfunction.
So, my advice for you: go to the next radio shack or electronic market and buy a can with compressed air. Blast some AIR gently trough the ventilation holes and if dust comes out then you know where the problem is. Just clean up the whole cooling system and make sure that the cooling system is nearly free of dust.

  • Sudden weird heat issue with C2D

My Core2Duo 2.0gh has been a joy for the last few months. Then today, 10 mins after switching on I noticed that temperature monitor had my CPU up to 75 degrees (when so far it's never been higher than 55) and my fan came on for the very first time. So what caused a jump of 20 degrees 10 mins after turning it on?
I always use a bread board to allow the heat under the computer + I was only using the usual safari / word apps, though I was in the process of running MacJanitor - maybe it's not built for Intel chips? Any ideas? Anything welcome.

What were you doing with MacJanitor? Sometimes a process might be running that utilizes all of your CPU. You can find out by opening Activity Monitor, found in the "Utilities" folder on your hard drive. Make sure "All Processes" is selected from the pulldown menu at the top of the window, and you will be able to see what is running. Chances are you were doing something that required extensive use of your CPU, which is fine. Once the process ends, your computer should go back to silent operation.

  • Very real heat issue with Retina Mac

I'm running Temperature Gauge by Tunabelly Software, a trusted app. It has shown me several times in the last two days that two or 3 of the CPU cores report back as 90 C. Average fan speed coming in at 5065.
Am being cautious in how I use it - not on soft surface - all vents unobstructed - space between bottom of laptop and hard surface.
The app has actually suggested several times that I shut the machine down or close apps. I'm not running it that hard - actually ordered it with maxed out options so I could use it for much more than this.

Hmm...I've seen a couple of reports about Temp' Gauge. Run smcFanControl as well and compare the results.

  • Due to the rumored heat problems with the iPad 3, is there a danger in using a leather case design for it.

I recently purchased a 64 GB Verizon LTE iPad,  along with a Bear Motion leather case designed specifically for that model. I've been reading a lot about the heat problems with the new iPad and although I haven't noticed them on mine, I'm worried that putting it in the case may cause worse problems. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Unless you have a defective iPad you should be fine.  The only time it should be heating up is when you're running an intensive app like a game that's working the quad-core processor and the screen.  I bought a Targus leather case for mine and play InfinityBlade2 on it and haven't noticed any heating issues with mine, but the part holding the iPad is plastic, so it can disipate heat better.
If your iPad gets too hot it'll warn you, so I'd use it for now and see what happens.  It'll shut down before it causes any permanent damage.

  • Ipad over heating issue

I have had a search and replies to this question are about a year old. Has Apple been able to resolve the heating issue with ipad or are they an inside only device?
I would like one for work where I am an ecologist and require something to record data in the field, unfortunately here in Western Australia it gets pretty warm in summer.
Has anyone had issues with recently manufactured ipad1 or ipad2 over heating in the sun?
Has anyone found a way around this, chilled case?..
    Thanks
    Mark

I just saw this case in the link below today. It's called an icePad. I don't think it will help for a full eight hours of work, but it might help for a few hours at a time maybe. Since the iPads cooling requirements are so much lower than a laptops you might even be pleasantly surprised.

That particular case doesn't have any reviews, but the laptop cooling pad in the link below has some reviews and it is using the same technique.

  • MSI GX 740 - Strange heat issue!

    Hello!
I've had some heat issues with my MSI gx 740 for a while. It's constantly turning off when playing a game, and I can't turn on my computer for a while, or it will turn off during boot. What makes this strange is that when i was using SpeedFan to measure my temperatures it changed dramatically within a minute!!
Photo number one shows ATI control center and SpeedFan when running CS:S in the background (windowed)
Photo number two shows ATI and SpeedFan when running CS:S!
Notice the time! How is this possible?
I have also thought about apply cooling supply (thermal compund/heat sink?). How do I apply this? (Point out on the previous photo?)
