Heating Problem with K8N?

Hi first time post here!
I'm planning on purchasing the K8N for the Athlon 3000+.  However, looking at the "Post High CPU Temperature" thread, I was a bit concerned of the temperatures.
1)  Are the temperatures listed on that thread typical or isolated cases?
2)  What are ideal CPU temperatures?

hi spaz (from ocforums) and philly
i hope i can answer your questions fully...
the k8n neo platinum is misreading high temps for newcastle cpus.  the readings are thought to be as much as 20°C too high.  lots of people are running at "60-70" under load, but NO one is reporting problems from high temps.. this apparently is very common in newly released motherboards..
everyone gets around 45°C for the "sys temp" in MSI's corecenter utility.  personally, i don't anything drastic is going on here... maybe it's misreadings, maybe it's a natural temp for this mobo, maybe a BIOS version will bring down the number... i'm just going to trust MSI's decision to release this board and say that there's nothing to worry about with the sys temp readings.

  • Due to the rumored heat problems with the iPad 3, is there a danger in using a leather case design for it.

I recently purchased a 64 GB Verizon LTE iPad,  along with a Bear Motion leather case designed specifically for that model. I've been reading a lot about the heat problems with the new iPad and although I haven't noticed them on mine, I'm worried that putting it in the case may cause worse problems. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Unless you have a defective iPad you should be fine.  The only time it should be heating up is when you're running an intensive app like a game that's working the quad-core processor and the screen.  I bought a Targus leather case for mine and play InfinityBlade2 on it and haven't noticed any heating issues with mine, but the part holding the iPad is plastic, so it can disipate heat better.
If your iPad gets too hot it'll warn you, so I'd use it for now and see what happens.  It'll shut down before it causes any permanent damage.

  • Problem with K8N Neo2

    Hello,
I am having problems with my new MB.  I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum ms-7025 and when I go into BIOS it will lock up when I enter the HT Frequency area.  I have Crucial Ballistix Memory and am trying to get more than 200fsb.
I have built several other systems and haven't had problems with overclocking before.
I am using a SATA in SATA 1, with an ATI Radeon 9500, 1 gig of Crucial Ballistix memory, an Antec slk 3700bke with 350 watt P/S.

    Thanks,
Between this and moving my SATA to 3 I was able to get the system to 233fsb and it posts at 260 fsb.
It locks up during Memtest86 at 260.  I'm not sure if it's PowerSupply or Heat, so next on my list of things to do is a new 500+ watt PS and replacing the AMD heatsink.

  • Boot Problem with K8n Neo 2 Platinum

I cant get my Computer to load the bios
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will lock up in the Bios Sign on and the only way to get it to boot through is to keep resetting the computer and turning the power off and on. It does this on a random basis, Ive also had problems with it locking up if the dynamic oc is turned on.
Has anybody heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Corsair memory is known to be troublesome with AMD64.
Nevertheless, if everything is set correctly, it'll work.  I've been running the LLPRO 3200 1GB kit at 220MHz without any noticable problems.  Run a couple of rounds with Memtest86+ to verify memory functionality.
Can you please give your specifications on the power supply unit (PSU), especially the amperage on the +12 volt rail.

  • Problem with K8N Neo 4 Platinum

Hi I am new on this forum.
I have problem with proper configuration of the BIOS in K8N Neo 4 Platinum. My processor is Athlon 64 3000. It has 1800 clock. My BIOS  makes default 200MHz x 5. It makes 1000 MHz clock. Will it be good if I change at 200 x 9?
Other thing: I tried to change at 200 x 9 but in Windows (2000) is still 200 x 5 (acc. to Core Cell). When I chanded on 200 x 7,5 all in Windows was ok. Core Cell showed 200 x 7,5. How I may resolve this problem?

That's your HT multiplier as mentioned by Some1ne not the Adjust CPU Ratio which is the CPU multiplier.
Your CPU is running at the correct speed.
DDR Clock: 167 MHz s/be 200 - this should chnge when memory is in right slots.
Change memory over & let's have a look @ those settings then.

    the d-bracket2 doesn't work
when my game controller is on , it isn't recognized by Win XP
but the 4 leds are green.
i tried the two connectors and it's the same thing.
my logitech cordless keyboard doesn't work in the bios
i tried with the ps2 but the keyboard didn't work in XP
i check the bios with an other keyboard and the usb keyboard support is enabled
    can you help me ?
    PS: Sorry for my english

    Hi galette,
    Do you have a k8n neo or neo2 ?
At least some neo2's have problems with ps/2 keyboards. Their users could circumvent this by using usb keyboards.
I have a logitech cordless desktop myself and for me it works. Perhaps you can borrow a usb keyboard to test it ?

i have weird problem with my K8N Neo-fsr and Athlon 64 2800+ socket 754, when i try to overclock i change in bios HT from 4 to 3 (for better stability), after restart nothing happen, my pc wont boot, also nothing on screen, so i must clear cmos for solve my problem and set to 4   i try several bioses from official to moded also pinochio`s and syar`s moded and allways the same issue    is it problem with processor? or motherboard?
thanx for your help and sorry for my english

You should first get down cpu ratio, then get up cpu fsb and as you wanted set ht frequency from 4 to 3 and "save changes and exit" if it doesn't boot change you psu (at least antec 380 or tagan) or go fast to send back your mobo to reseller!!

  • Boot problems with K8N Neo FSR

Recently i bought a new MSI K8N Neo FSR mainboard and an Athlon64 3000+
I noticed that a lot of people on this board had problems when booting Windows XP
I had the same problem: Every time i tried to boot Win, it freezed at the Win XP logo.
It seems that the problem is my cordless logitech keyboard.
When i'm using a standard PS/2 keyboard i have no problems booting.
Are there any known problems with nForce3 based mainboards and cordless logitech keyboards?
Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this problem?

There just seems a problem with some mobos and keyboards.
Usually it's a PS2 thing, but looks like you have found another to add to the list.

  • Cool & Quiet Problem with K8N Neo Platinum

    Hi!
I just formatted my windows xp and encountered weird problem with Cool & Quiet.
Before the format CQ worked perfectly, but now when I apply minimal power management from the properties Windows freezes.
I have 1.2.2.2 drivers installed and CQ enabled from BIOS.
BIOS has been updated to 1.7, 1.9 bugged for me.
Windows XP SP2 + all hotfixes.

If all he has done is "reformat" windows what would have changed in the BIOS magically?  Still seems like the driver to me...Troubleshoot what has obviously changed since things worked normally.  If he didn't touch the BIOS and only reinstalled Windows the driver is the logical issue.
Ugh...even in that linked article the guy is saying the HyperTransport is the link between the CPU and Chipset/RAM.  There goes this RAM thing again.  The memory controller communicates with the DRAM controller no Hypertransport about it...
ok, but where is DRAM controller? in CPU my friend and in Athlon 64 is DRAM controller in CPU so this is HyperTransport - comunication with CPU and memory...no only me has this mention but also another guy and another, so all of us are wrong yout think?

  • Raid0 problem with K8N NEO4 F1

I have had some strange problems recently after running with complete stability for a couple of months.
    1. On booting up in the morning Windows XP Pro has failed to load. Only a MBR repair or image backup worked.
    2. Problems with Raid on boot occurred with 1. No array warning and only one disk showing up after deleting array.
    I have :-
    1. Run Memtest from Dos with no errors.
    2. Run WDDIAG on both disks with no errors
    3. Checked temperatures. All less than 45
    4. Checked power voltages etc - all good
    5. Re-flashed the bios from DOS.
    6. First thing I did was turn off overclocking btw.
I have changed to RAID1 mirrored drives and things have been absolutely stable for a week. I even have the impression that the system is running faster!I have all the latest drivers installed. My feeling is that this is a bios or chip related problem though there are stories of XP fouling up the MBR when at the 137GB limit, I don't think these apply.
    Any comments would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Meditek,
First would like to go over your CD boot problem, because this totally a BIOS problem and Windows and its drivers not in the picture.  Therefore, I would like to make sure the BIOS running correctly and stably, before we get look at startup or running of Windows has problem.  BIOS Has problem Windows is going to have problems.
The drive boot sequence; If you have a drive boot sequence of (1) Floppy Drive (2) CD Drive (3) Hard Drive and you have no disks in the floppy or CD drive the BIOS should not hang on the Floppy or CD Drive if the is not disk in them or should I give any type of air message.
What I am getting from reading between the lines in your messages is that whenever you need to boot from a drive you are manually placing list in the boot priority less.  Please inform me, if I am wrong?
I would like you to set your boot priority list like the one I listed above, that (1) Floppy Drive (2) CD Drive (3) Hard Drive.  If the is any other devices list place them after the Hard Drive.  Then go to your list of hard drive and insure the drive/Array with Window in stalled on it is first on the list, this tell the BIOS and Windows It is the Windows Boot device.
Next, the CMOS Backup Battery, 2.89V is on the edge of being weak and we need to Totally Eliminate it as a problem.  I just took batteries of old motherboard that have been setting on the self for three to five years that read to same or higher.  So, get a new replacement battery the measures 2.950 or better.  Your current battery if you were having not problem I would you could still use it, but have a new on hand.
A new battery will measure over 3 volts.
Now, like take a look at the BIOS MOS reset procedure you are using.  I myself and others I have been in communications with have been having problems with procedure listed the Manual not completely clearing the CMOS Memory.  Leaving trash in some of the BIOS parameters, some of which are not even list so you do not your have completed a good total clearing of the BIOS and this alone can lead to some real weird problem that are imposable to trace to a cause.  Another MSI Form member gave me this procedure.  This procedure insures the there is no power let in the system to defeat your attempt to clear the clear the BIOS parameters.
    (1)   Unplug the AC Plug cord from the computer.
    (2)   Remove the Battery.  If your like me and has always struggled with get the little battery out when buried behind and under cables in between I/O cards.  Get a small pair of needle nose priers and press the two metal tabs together that make up the retaining clip.  Now this first time you do this it will surprise you, because if there is nothing it its way the spring contact behind it will pop it out with enough force to send it flying.  If you power supply is mounted in the bottom of your case, put paper over the grill, because if the battery goes in there you are in for at lest 12 pack day.
    (3)   With power, unplugged and the battery remove press the BIOS clear button and the Power switch and holed them for twenty to thirty seconds.
    (4)   Then, let the system set for as long as you have patience, at lest thirty minutes.
    (5)   Again, press the BIOS clear button and the Power switch and holed them for twenty to thirty seconds.
    (6)   Reinstall the battery and plug the power back in.
    (7)   Boot the system to the BIOS to BIOS Default Values, Save and Exit.
    (8)   Reboot to BIOS Setup Routine and Set all Bios parameters to the normal system operating parameters, save and exit.
Note: Do not setup your system for any over-clocking, but check you memory default setting to insure the BIOS is setting them correctly.  Mine sets the default memory voltage to below the manufactures spec.
    (9)   Reboot the system to the BIOS setup routine, YES again, rechecks that all of you normal system operating parameters save and exit.
    (10)    Check and insure there are no disks in the Floppy or the CD, if there are remove them.
    (11)    Now when the system reboots it should not hang on the floppy or CD and the should be no error messages unless Windows itself has problem startup.
Now, when you have all that done, reply and let me know how you system is operating.
And that all for today, my communication center between my right and left brain is about a tenth the of normal and this has been working it on over load for about of about two hours, so time for med’s and a nap.
    Roger
When submitting a problem, include a complete list of your system components; include part numbers, all Power Supply Voltages, and their output ratings.  It is almost impossible to estimate what your problem is without knowing something about it.

  • Display problems with K8N Neo Platinum

I have XP Professional installed on my Raptor fine, but I am having issues with my Radeon 9800.  I cannot boot XP unless I hit F8 and then select "Enable VGA Mode"
When I do not enable VGA mode, my monitor goes blank right before the Welcome screen.
Moving along...now when I boot with "Enable VGA Mode" I cannot change ANY monitor settings.  If I increase the resolution from 640x480/8bit to, let's say, 800x600/32bit, the screen will go blank for a few seconds and then a black screen with a white blinking cursor at the top left corner will show.  After this, my monitor just completely shuts off and I am forced to restart.
I also had problems with the ATi Control Panel.  The ATi driver package installed fine, so I rebooted but when Windows started, I received an error message saying that ATi Control Panel could not load.
I'm baffled right now and I really don't know what to do.  Any help is appreciated, thank you guys very much.

You might want to try and reinstall the video drivers and make sure that you uninstalled the old ones fully with Driver Cleaner.

  • USB problem with K8N Platinum BIOS 1.C

I was running the beta BIOS 1.CA to fix a problem with one of my CPU cores not being detected on a warm boot and it worked great.
When I noticed the official release BIOS 1.C I upgraded but I noticed problems with my USB mouse and keyboard sticking occasionally, the keyboard sometimes needed two or three presses to type and I was losing mouse clicks, gone back to the beta 1.CA BIOS and everything is fine again.
Anyone else noticed this with 1.C BIOS?

Yes, I've gone back to the beta BIOS now and everything's fine
I only upgraded to the release version because usually releases are more stable than betas, obviously in this case the reverse is true

  • Any problems with K8N neo4-FI and Creative X-FI Xtreme Music ???

Hi. Anyone having problems with the mentioned combination. (I've heard about incompatibility issue with creative and nforce4 chipsets) and since I have the mentioned board I would like to avoid future problems and maybe go with Audigy 4 instead. Thanks in advance.

    Here's MSIs technical support answer:
Sometimes before, there was incompatibility issues between the X-FI Xtreme card and motherboards based on nforce 4 chipset. And then, Creative official has stated it existed on almost noforce4 motherboard, not only some or one manufacturer, so user met this issue should contact Creative.
But from Creative's official statement as you find, they thought it caused by nforce4 chip, but our motherboard chipset is from NVIDIA. If NVIDIA had no plan to change the chipset architecture, we can't solve this issue. So we suggest you'd better not use this audio card if you use this MB.
    Best wishes,
    MSI Technical Support
Now when I think about it, I have been using SB live 5.1 for years now and I have changed several platforms (VIA KT 400, Nforce2 (Soltek, Epox), Nforce 3 (soltek) and finaly Nforce 4 and have noticed strange behaviour with many of them in combination with mentioned card (I had to remove additional raid controller card because of skipping video and audio during video capturing on Nforce 2 platform). Now with SB live 5.1 removed, on MSI neo 4-FI it seems that occasional freezing of video on my DVB-T Pinnacle card has gone. I was convinced that the reason was weak reception (although my neighbour from just a few blocks away had excellent picture), but now I am not so shure. I don't know if I want to risk the possibility of repeating all those problems again even if it' "The most powerful audio processor in the world".

  • Weird start up problem with K8N Neo2

    Hello all,
I'm hoping SOMEONE can help me with a very annoying and very perplexing problem with my Neo2. I've read quite a few posts and can't seem to find anything similar to my problem.
Ever since the first time I booted my setup I've gotten this problem where when I power up my PC all the fans start up and the HD starts to spin up as well, but then it makes this click, spins down, then spins back up, clicks, spins down... and well, you get the picture.  It keeps doing this until I power off the PC.
The first time this happened I thought the HD had died, especially since I heard a lot of people where having sudden deaths of their Deskstars. So I hooked up another HD I had lying around, but, same problem. So at least I knew the HD was not the problem, and here I was starting to think about how an excellent excuse this was to get a new WD Raptor, LOL!
After fiddling around with the connectors, the cables, the CPU and the memory, I made this last ditch effort to clear the CMOS. Well, low and behold, the damn thing booted up fine. I thought, oh well, sometimes the most obvious solutions are the ones that you never think about. So I install everything and turn it off. Next morning I wake up, turn on the PC, and the hard drive spins up, clicks, spins down, spins back up, clicks and I start to cry.
Well, for the past few days, whenever I want to use my PC I have to clear the CMOS to get it to boot. Stangely enough it works just fine if I don't power it down and after some grueling Doom 3 sessions.
Im thinking it might be a bad CMOS battery, but then it would still boot and it would just loose the settings, right? Or maybe I have a bad CMOS? Or is the board just plain defective?
I'll appreciate any help and insight you guys can give.

    Sounds like you are shorted out on a standoff or something. You may want to pull the motherboard and start fresh. Here is some good reading material at this point;
