Heatsink Lapping and 180 Temp

HI guys, in the last week i have accumulated a mega 180 and am in the process of reducing its temp.
What do u guys suggest, and what the hell is lapping, can someone point me in the right direction
thanks

Lapping is polishing your heatsink to mirror finish (with sand paper)
then applying thermal paste (Arctic 5) and then praying the temperatures go down, since the thermal conduitivity (sp?) is increased.

  • Mega 180 Temps

Let me start off by saying that the Mega 180 is a great idea for a product but unfortunately it is not finished.  MSI is using us as beta testers - at our expense.  I build computers for people as a side business and against my better judgement, I built a customer a Mega 180 based system and I've had nothing but problems with it and it's damaging my reputation.  But, OK enough of that.
One major problem with the Mega 180 is it's CPU and hard drive temp and here's what you can do to fix it.  First off, the CPU heat sink is nice and big and made of copper - very nice.  However, the underside of the sink (the part that touches the CPU) is absolutely aweful!  The bottom should be mirror smooth.  Mine looks like the surface of a record.  Therefore, you need to lap it.  Look this process up on the net to see exactly how to do it.  Once lapped and the bottom is mirror smooth and you can see your reflection, use ARTIC SILVER thermal grease (just a tiny bit) and put the sink back on.  Your CPU temp under load will be about 8 degrees cooler.  Next, replace the small fan on the cooler with a bigger one (make sure you use one that's sensored, like the one you're replacing).  Lastly, get some flexible ducting from the hardware store (plastic, not aluminum), attach one end over the sink's big fan and carefuly route the other end to the side of the case (may not be possible if you are using an AGP card) and position it so it sucks in outside air.  Now that your CPU is cooled with fresh air, you will see another 2 - 3 degree reduction of CPU temp.
Finally, the hard drive is way too hot.  I measured it with a IR temp meter after a full defrag and my jaw hit the ground when I saw how hot it was - 152 degrees F.  That type of temp will kill your hard drive.  Fix this by placing a fan inside the case (RAM side) blowing fresh air right onto the hard drive.  This brought the temp down significantly.  It also cooled other items too (CD drive, chipset).
The only downside to this is your system will be louder due to fan noise.  However you will have fewer system lock-ups and mystery reboots (caused by overheated components).
One last idea, if the case is just too cramped for you, remove the power supply, buy a new one and mount it outside the case on the back.  It doesn't look good but it sure frees up space and improves air flow (plus you'll have more power if you buy a higher watt supply).
    Peace!

    Hey cb31,
Even though this thread is about temps, I too think noise is the biggest problem with the Mega, and my current efforts are targeted at killing the constant background noise. My goal is the same as your's - I want to leave the computer on most of the time and not be bothered with it.
I'm proceeding slowly however, and so far I've only done the following:
-Replaced the 60mm Delta fan with a Papst of the exact same size. I found the Delta to be noisy, while others report that it's doing ok. Don't know about you... The Papst is really quiet and actually cools a little bit more effective, though that's a bonus feature! But on the overall it didn't have the effect I hoped for
-The smaller Delta fan (outtake side of heatsink) already is quiet enough, so doesn't need to be replaced on behalf of noise anyway...
-Took out the PSU and put White Lithium Grease in the fan for smoother operation since I figured it made a lot of noise. That didn't help much either... I'm thinking about replacing the PSU fan with something better, even though a lable on the back of the PSU states "W/ Noisekiller". It's still a no-name fan and can be improved upon.
Right now the loudest noise in my Mega doesn't seem to come from any fan at all, but rather from the hd. And it's not so much the actual noise from the unit as vibrations reverberating through the chassis. A common problem obviously, but there isn't any room for hd suspension systems in the Mega, so other actions are required here! I tried to slide in thin sheets of plastic between the drive and the cage, to act as silencers, but that didn't have any real effect as the cage touches the drive in several places, thus transfering the vibrations anyway. A new drive cage could do the trick, but I haven't gotten that far yet, and might not ever...
The Seagate Barracuda is considered to be a silent drive, so replacing it probably wouldn't help.
To conclude: If your fans are noisy, replace them or grease them for better operation, but you might not even hear the difference...
The major flaw seems to be the internal design of the Mega, and there's isn't much to be done about that, unless you're handy with a Dremel and sheets of metal.  I might be, but I will have to get back to you on that!
    Cheers!

  • How can I get firefox to not save pdf files (such as bank statements I have looked at) to my documents and settings/temp folder?

I just realized that some (but not all pdf files that I have opened) pdf files of bank statements as well as other pdf files that I have opened when browsing with firefox have been saved to my documents and settings/temp folder. I am concerned about this for security of my data, but also confused as to why all of these documents (as well as some word documents and other types of non .tmp files) are being stored here. Please tell me how to stop this from happening.
    Thank you,
    Wimajeanne

I can understand that they would appear there if I have the document open, or have recently viewed it. These documents are over a month old, some are over a year old.
Also, it is not just PDF files, I also see word docs and java.exe files in this folder. None of these files have the %temp% in the title as they do when I have a particular document open, rather they are a copy of the file or document that I have saved to my data file.
My main concern is the security of information when random PDF and doc files are stored here without my knowledge.
    Thank you.

  • TS3999 I see high and low temps in place of scheduled events. Why do I see weather instead of events? Is there a way to switch ?

Anyone out there with a solution?  I don't know how it got there but I now see high and low temps in my Calender view 68/45 and I don't know how to get back to only events.
    Thanks

Check Settings>Privacy>Calendars.  You may have a weather app that is accessing your calendar and entering this information.  If so, turn it to Off and see if it stops.

  • Aren't -180° and 180° the same for a 3D parametric surface graph?

    Hi
    everyone,
    I need to
plot some results using the 3D parametric surface graph and these 3 matrix :
    First
matrix “theta” : Each column ranges from -180° to 179°    (180x360)
    Second
matrix “phi” : Each line ranges from 0° to 89.5° (increasing by 0.5°)   (180x360)
    Third matrix “z” : 180x 360 matrix initialised to 7
    First and
second matrixes are converted to a polar representation.
    My problem
is that I reach my goal, a full red circle, only if my matrixes range
from -180° to 180° and not when they range from -180° to 179°. Aren’t -180° and
180° the same for this graph? I must be doing something wrong...
    Any help
    would be great,
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    User

Seems obvious that you need to have the first and last point the same in order to close the curve.
A simpler, but equivalent example is a circle on an xy graph, Unless the first and last point coincide, you won't close the loop.

  • Encrypted L3 Communications Between LAP and WLC?

    Hi All,
    I am working with a client that wants to put LAPs remote to their WLC (a 4402). The rub is that the communications between the LAP and WLC must be secure even across their private WAN! I have a couple of resulting questions if anyone is able to help;
I can't find out if and what encryption method is (is it AES etc.?) used on the backhaul between LAPs and the WLC and what's involved?
Terminology may be wrong here, this is not a wireless mesh, just conventional LAP to WLC
The client's WAN is already encrypted (IPSec VPN over VPLS) in parts - what's the consequence of running AP<-->WLC with end-to-end encryption (if possible) over a WAN with IPSec, i.e. double encryption?
Strange but true - any pointers will be much appreciated.... Phil.C

With a 4400 series controller the control traffic between the AP and controller is already AES encrypted.  The user traffic is not encrypted.  If you use a 5508 controller all traffic between the AP and controller is AES encrypted.
As for running the traffic through a VPN, that should work.  The issue I typically see with this is with the MTU.  The controller will drop any packets with a data payload less than 32bytes.  Depending on the MTU over the VPN I have seen packets get fragmented and this to be an issue.  If you are using one of the CAPWAP versions (5.2 or newer) dynamic MTU discovery is part of the protocol and this MTU issue really doesn't exist.

  • Locz and Entz temps

Hi can anybody tell me what locz and entz temps refer to since changing motherboards in hp 4540s i have been having what seems to be over heating probs were has the fan kicks in after so long and cursor lag which makes laptop unusable until rebooted. Installed cupid hwmonitor which shows locz and entz temps shooting from around 38c to 85c have I purchased a faulty mobo applied thermal paste to cpu and gpu plate on three separate occasions just in case I got it wong first and second time didnt use any kind of liquid cleaner because paste came off pretty easy with a mirco fibre cloth is that were I have gone wong the processors seemed very clean to me any advice appreciated.

Who's got the lowest temp?  Yeah, I think people read various boards and get nervous (and embarassed to mention) if their temps are even just peaking in the 50's under heavy load.  With the latest BIOS related temp change, I did run Motherboard Monitor for a while (which records high, low, and average temps) and after playing Jedi Academy for three hours yesterday, I noticed the high temp was 62.  Should I freak out , or should I be happy that my system has been rock solid stable and lets me play a game like that for three hours straight without a hitch.
I haven't looked in on this board for a couple of months, and perhaps someone else has come to the same conclusions about dealing with the temps for the K7N2s, but the fact that I haven't been here says something good about the board, I suppose.
I am relieved to see from elsewhere on this board that this 3.7 BIOS has put to rest the problems with the R30 Radeons (fingers crossed).  I'm planning on going out and getting a Radeon 9600 Pro today.  So perhaps this BIOS update was worthwhile.

  • Iphone4 and $180 for iphone 4s

can you trade in your iphone 4 with smashed sccreen and $180 and get iphone 4s?

Apple does not do hardware upgrades.
For $149 you can get your iPhone 4 replaced with one just like it.

  • HT2101 Anyone else get the "iPod too hot" message, even when the device and ambient temp are both cool?

My iPod Touch 4 repeatedly gets the iPod too hot message, even when the device and ambient temp are both cool.  Shuts itself off.  Ugh!
Is this a warranty issue or is there a fix?

  • Neo4 plat SLI missing 140, 150 and 180 dividers :(

I was told that i was missing the 140, 150 and 180 dividers on this board.  im not even sure which bios i have.  What would the best overclocking bios be for this board?  Everest home says its:  MSI K8N Diamond MS -7100

The 3.8 Mod bios by aicjofs is probably the best bios.   It unlocks all the hidden options and also gives you some more mem dividers.  You can find it here:  http://home.comcast.net/~aicjofs/7100MOD380.zip
There is also a bios out for the K8N Diamond MS-7100 5.09.  This is an overclocking specific bios and has some preset (default) performance settings on the ram and voltages.  Depending on your processor and RAM it could be a big help.  For me, I have an X2, it didnt give me anything the 3.8 mod bios didnt.  Your board will run either bios from the Platinum or Diamond versions.
Sorry dont have a link for the Diamond 5.09 (I believe there is also a newer version), but if you check this post here:  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=82493.0      You might be able to find it.    If you cant, send me an email and Ill send the 5.09 version to you.

  • CPU hog and high temps.

Ok so I have updated my 2008 MBP 2.5ghz dual core, 2GB ram, too Lion and iLife 11.  I have used iPhoto 09 before on Snow Leopard just fine, but after upgrading I am seeing iPhoto'11 hog 110%CPU and my temp rockets to 65-70+ degrees Celsius
Is this normal behavior? I have left it running incase it was indexing or something but the temps never drop below 62c.

When you checked Activity Monitor, did you change it from its default of "Show User Processes" to "Show All Processes?" You have to make this change to see the background processes that typically eat up cycles and raise the temps. There is a "Show" pull-down in the upper part of the AM window where you make the change.
Are you leaving some space behind the computer? The all-important exhaust port is part of the display hinge assembly and that area needs to be clear.

  • Heatsink Lapping

Has anyone lapped their heatsink(s) for their opteron/FX system?  What board were you running and how were the results?  Has anyone dared trying to lap their CPU?  I'm not afraid to lap my heatsinks, but I just haven't gotten around to them yet.  My processors, on the other hand, YIKES!!!  I get scared just thinking about it.

Just be very careful when lapping, If using sand paper make sure its super super fine.  I lapped my GPU on my 8500LE 128meg version when i changed out the HSF on it,  I have also lapped my cooler master HSF on my last rig before watercooling(was already lapped to mirror finnish already   ).  There is really nothing to it but lapping a CPU I have never heard of.

  • Kernel Panic, and high temps?

Hey, I've got a MBP I'm not sure if it's the late 08 model, it's what I think you call a aluminum MBP and has 4GB 667MHz RAM, 2.4GHz Processor, NVidia GeForce 9600 GT 256MB.
EDIT: Hah, just noticed, I should mention we're running Leopard. Not Snow Leopard.
It's had a kernel panic about 6 - 8 times in the past week and a half, it hadn't been used much for about 1 - 2 weeks, and we had left it on one day, and it was actually on it's screensaver and I went to it and it had had a kernel panic.
I'm not sure why, it's had no modifications whatsoever. The only thing that I thought had changed, was we updated to 10.5.8, I think that may have been when it started, I may be wrong though.
Is there anyway to solve this issue? the first time I noticed it, like I said it was on a screensaver,
it happened a few more times before I actually started to look closer at the issue, and
the last time it happened was about 1 or 2 days ago. It happened about 3x in a row, when we were hooking it up to a 42" 1080P HDTV (I think), trying to watch some videos on the laptop, after the first kernel panic being hooked up to the TV, we unplugged it, and then was using it for 2-3 minutes, actually changing some settings in System Preferences, it then did it again, and I then unplugged the A/C Power cord, because I thought it was getting VERY hot, and it happened again. It seems to be really cool in the morning having been turned off, or been asleep, average temp of everything is between 25-35. 5 or more minutes of activity, the GPU is up around 50-55, etc...
I don't know how to attach an image or the zip archive of the MBPs kernel panic logs,
But the temps for iStat Nano were:
    Macintosh HD: 43c
    CPU A: 51c
    GPU Diode: 57c
    GPU Heatsink: 48c
    Heatsink A: 46c
    Heatsink B: 38c
    Enclosure Bottom: 31c
Are these temperatures too hot? I have seen most of these temperatures a little higher than this though.
    Can anyone help?

Don't know if this will help or not-
I'm very new to all this technology and so purchased an Apple Care plan to help me. I've had my machine for about 8 months. In the last three weeks I've had several incidents of Kernal panic. After scanning the system with the Tech Tool that comes with the Apple Care plan I found that there was a problem with my Video Ram. In working with Austin, the very helpful staff person at Apple I learned to reset the System Management Control (SMC) by turning off the machine, removing the charge/power cord, removing the battery from the back, then holding down the power button for 10 seconds. After that I replaced the battery, replaced the power cord and then turned the machine back on. I rescanned the system with the Tech Tool and everything checked out fine.
I believe the cause was me overheating the machine. Austin explained that I had been blocking the cooling system by treating my machine as a laptop instead of the portable system that it is.
Austin sugggested that I use the MacBook on a flat surface even if I was sitting on the couch or in bed to allow it to cool as it was designed. That's what I've been doing and so far so good.

  • Question and watercooler temp sending unit and ? graphics card mod¿

Thank You for your time in reading this,,,,
I have recently installed a KingWin water cooler on my sys.  And am pleased with results for the cost.  First question is on graphics card,, My current card had a heatsink w/fan the heatsink was very wide to cover 4 ram chips on 2 sides of gpu,, I didn't want to run water gpu cooler and leave ram chips without heatsink,, so I cut out the section of heatsink that went over gpu to accomidate the water block,, seems fine, but I left the flat 4 pin power connector plugged in the graphics card, I had removed the gpu fan it plugged in elsewhere on gpu card, On bootup graphics card no go, cleared cmos, etc. still no,, so I unplugged 4 pin power connector off gpu card and was a go,, but now I get low 3.3v warnings from PCALERT4 not continously, but I never had that alert before, Does the GPU card use power from 4 pin connector other than for hatsink fan?  And if so,, would a bios update or reflash bios in GPU card fix so I can plug 4 pin power back to card?? ,, 2nd question on CPU temp.. Kingwin came with a seperate temperature sending unit,   I have relocated the sending unit twice and would bet my proccessor I have acourding to instructions in the right location,, So my question is how come PCAlert4, HotCPUtestrpro or any other mainboard utility show a different higher cpu tempature? Right now pcAlert showing 50C. and Kingwin controller showing 43.8 - 44.1C. ,, This is not a critical question I have my ideas why they could read different, would having 2 temperature sending units on CPU provide better reading? One on each side of cpu under waterblock?
Thanks Again for your time in reading this, I apologize if my Mind Set while writing questions seems =\   little sleep deprived Solutions come to me better when sub-concious part of my brain is influencing more,, laffs yeah like that makes sense,,,
    ~Mike¥²
    Happy 2005,,,

i think they need the 4pin to run at full speed when i take mine off it reduces the core and ram speed but the cpu fan stays running. i have a abit 5700 ultra.
