Heatsinks/Fans affecting speed

I'm about to add an Athlon 2400+ cpu (retail box with heatsink/fan included) to my K7T Turbo2 motherboard.  I won't be overclocking or anything, just running normally.
My question is, will using a different heatsink/fan, like a Thermaltake Volcano 10, for example, increase my performance at all?
I'd like to use the heatsink/fan included in the retail package to save money, but would using a better heatsink/fan make it run any faster?
- James

Hi,
Nope, as Wonk said....it will run just as fast

  • Heatsink fan connected to motherboard??

I own a K7N420 motherboard.  On this motherboard, I have a Globalwin WBK38 heatsink+fan which cools an Athlon XP 1600+ processor. This cooling system has a fan which rotates at 6800 rpm and has a power usage of about 3.5W.  At present, it is connected directly to the power supply via the supplied converter cable that changes the 3-pin plug to the normal power supply adapters.  Is it dangerous to connect it directly to the motherboard as I want to monitor its speed?

i would not thats a bit to much for a mother board header, some high speed fans have a seperate signal wire that can be plugged to the board to still give the signal,it might be possible to mod yours to do the same

  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2013 Fan Not Speeding Up

I just got my MBPr i5 late 2013 a few days ago and I noticed that the fan never speeds up. I have downloaded macs fan control, as I do on all my macs and the fan never speeds up unless I set it to a constant rpm. I've purposly stressed my computer and saw the temperature shoot right up to 95 degrees celcius, and the fan speed always stays at the minimun of ~1295 rpm. No matter what I do I cant get the fan to speed up under automatic control. Is there something I can do, or should I just contact Apple Care?
Another note is that ever since updating to 10.9.2 I cant access any network drives or use airplay(which I can do from my other mac). Is this a normal issue with 10.9.2?

Yes, i bought the same $2599 Version.
I even tried two of them.
They all run super hot. Especially with chrome. Something is not optimized here.
I tried to watch some videos online using battery. It lasted 4 hours.
It was running hot all time.
I wish it could run like my bro's 2013 macbook air 13".
It runs cold regardless of using chrome or whatever.
The only time it gets warm was when i was rendering.
And it lasts like 10 hours.
I am still can't decide on keeping it.
I bought it for portability and power, but poor battery seems like giving me not much portability like the air.

  • MEGA 865 CPU heatsink FAN FAILURE.

Got my Mega 865 less than six months ago, and the CPU heatsink fan is making annoying loud grinding noises.
Anyone know where I can get an adequate replacement FAST online in the USA? (I need it in
The fan is the 60mm x 60mm x 13mm near the AGP slot, Delta Electronics model AFB0612VHC and the specs are DC12V 0.36A 28cfm 3pin motherboard connector.
Is it worth contacting MSI Support? Can they FedEx me a fast replacement overnight? (If it's under warranty, great, if not, fine I'll pay for it.)
Otherwise, the MEGA865 is great, I liked it a lot.
    Config:
    ATI Radeon 9600 (fanless)
    Hauppauge PVR250MCE
    3.2 ghz Northwood
    250 GB Maxtor
OEM NEC 2500A DVD RW black.
    and
    Windows Media Center 2005 (rocks)
Thanks for any help you can give.

I got the MEGA from newegg.
I'd rather MSI just mailed me a fan, not a whole heatsink. Bubble wrap one and drop it in a FedEx overnight envelop.
Even if it's under warranty, I'd totally pay for a new one if I could get it fast.
We're talking about a $15 item (+whatever FedEx overnight costs). I don't really care if I have to buy one myself. Unfortunately I looked on the web, and no one seems to sell this exact fan anywhere.
Wow I'm impressed. I phoned MSI USA support, was on hold for
Great job MSI support. I'm astonished it was this easy.

  • How to manually speed up fan's speed in order to cool down hot G5's CPUs?

    Hi everybody,
I recently was given an old 2x1.8Ghz PPC G5 in order to build a personnal server but I have troubleshooting with CPU's temps that are really too hot (75°C with no app open, only Finder).
I know these temps are not that "hot" but I can't imagine what it would be when I'll open Safari, iGetter, iTunes, CyberDuck, Adium and Photoshop CS4...).
I first unmount everything, blown inside some bottled air to make sure there were no dust creating overheating inside and remount everything.
Installed Leopard (last OS installable on PPC machines), made the last updates possible and restart.
Everything is working well althought this CPU's temp is so **** high and fans's speed are still at 300rpm. I was looking for some app that would do the same as SmcFanControl for Intel based Macs but for PPC's ones.
After many internet searches on many forums I finally admitted there were no software able to set fans's speed, the only way was manually editing the AppleFan.kext integer's values.
What I did, reducing the integer values to lower rates (256x multiples), then restarted the Mac but nothing happens. As I check the changed values, they indeed are the ones I edited but the fans still are at 300 rpm and the CPU's temp 75°C...
Does somebody have any solution for that issue, I feel I checked everything that was possible but nothing seems to work.
    Any help is welcome...
    Ygddrasill

I thought too that only Apple had these disks and I was told that it was quite hard to find them on the web...
Yes, normally only Apple or AASPs would have them, but they can be found.
I noticed that CPU A was 10°C hotter than the B, is that normal too as the computer is idling?
Sort of normal, with my Quad G5 not doing much I have 51.8°C, 50.3°C,46.2°C, 46.6°C, & as I recall die diffs were greater in 10.4 than 10.5.
Still, your temps are too high for idle, I would only expect those under full load for awhile.
I'd try Power Fractal on a long run & see if the temps increase or just stay where they are...
    http://daugerresearch.com/fractals/powerfractal.shtml
is that a good sign of health for the fans?
I think so, but could you tell if the CPU fans were going full blast?

  • Heatsink fan recommendation pls!!!

    Hi vashx --
The Cooler Master Aero 4 gets an A+ from this happy owner.
    See it at:
    http://phamcomputer.safeshopper.com/36/727.htm?938
I own one, and can tell you it works great. It keeps the CPU temperature right around 40 deg C (+/- 5 deg C), consistently.
Prior to using it, the stock Intel HSF was installed. I saw temperatures around 50 deg C quite often.
Note: there are two versions of the Aero 4: a "lite" version, which uses Aluminum as the heatsink material, and a regular version, which uses Copper as the heatsink material.  I own the regular version.
And yes - there are other HSF units out there, made by other companies, which work great too.
Why did I choose the Aero 4?  Because of the unique way the fan was mounted on the heatsink.  It really does work.
Oh, and I did decide to use Arctic Silver III (and I meticulously followed their application directions.)  Unfortunately, I don't have any comparison figures to reference, so I'm unsure how much it helps.  I am assuming, though, it did not hurt to use it

  • MSI GTX 680 fan automatic speed problem

Hi guys..first sorry for my bad english..
I buy today MSI GTX 680 and I have problem with automatic fan speed...i had GTX 570 TF and that was working perfect but with GTX 680 I have weird problem, when GPU temperature goes up, fan RPM speed goes down
    Screenshot:
Now I disable auto speed and set speed manually, but that's not best solution becouse I must manually set higher speed when i want play BF3, Call of duty MW3 etc...
    Anyone know what is problem?
I update GPU drivers, MSI afterburner ( 2.2.0 ), chipset drivers...
    Thanks!

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

  • Heatsink/fan excessive weight?

I recently purchased a Kingwin K8CU-8025 heatsink/fan to go along with my AMD64 3200+ and K8T NEO FIS2R. However, when it arrived, I noticed that it weighs, according to the site, 2 lbs. In short, should I be concerned? It seems as though a two pound heatsink would exert quite a bit of force on the motherboard, perhaps even to a breaking point.
    Thanks in advance!

2 lbs, geesh that is quite a lot.
the old xp's  had a limit of @300 grams
the amd 64 has a huge metal back plate which should help, but i don't remember
my heat sink being anywhere near that....maybe a hard drive, but not the hs.

  • Stock heatsink+fan question

    Hello,
I have an FX55 CPU which was originally installed with the stock HSF.
I needed to remove the HSF and now i want to put it back. The question is:can I use a cooling compound (arctic silver etc) with the stock HSF or must I use the same solid product which was originally on the HSF?

I am not by my system at the moment (using the crap lump they call a pc at work  )
But as I remember, no, the release lever is right alongside the ZIF, which is totally obscured by the stock heatsink/fan, which fits snugly into the plastic 'frame' which the ZIF is in.
Care is the main item here, and possible, run the system just before you remove it, and the processor will be hot and the pad softer, I did mine cold and was lucky it didn't leave a leg behind
Was all my fault anyway, replaced my 350 W power supply with a 500 W cheapo from Ebuyer (£14-99), the powersupply looked good, but fried itself (nice smell of burning plastic) and took my motherboard with it   (but luckily my chip, memory, graphics and other attached bits survived !   )

  • Removing heatsink/fan

Hi, is removing the heatsink/fan considered modifiying the video card? I'm curious wether that voids warranty.  Thanks.

good question. According to the User's Guide for FX Series II, Section 3.1.4, Page 3-5, I read the words " ...... without consulting anyone." and also presented few pictures on how to remove the back fan sink.
So I guess ONLY the back fan sink can be removed without voiding warranty. And this only applicable to FX 5900 series!!
    The rests I guess not!!

  • HEATSINK FAN

The heatsink fan in my Mac Pro has become noisy. I have to wear noise-cancelling headphones so I can work at the computer. I was going to replace the heatsink, but when I removed it I saw that the fan was easily removable. The tech manual discusses removal and replacement of the PCIe and processor cage fans and the heatsink, but there is no mention of the heatsink fan. So, I have a few questions:
    1. Is there a replacement part for the heatsink fan? If so, what is the part number?
    2. Can the fan hub be lubricated? If so, with what?
    3. Is this all a fantasy, and must I replace the entire heatsink?
After watching the recent Apple media event, I thought it would be nice if I could avoid all this trouble, and replace my present Mac Pro with the new one. However, this would be a pricey endeavor.  Therefore, I would happily accept any and all donations to the cause.  (I thought I'd add a bit of levity to bring a smile to your faces).

If you can get access to the fan bearing, some light oil (SAE #10 or "sewing machine" oil) may buy some time. WD-40 is often suggested, but it has a tragic flaw -- it is essentially ALL solvents, and will flash off over time.
If you google the part number of the fan motor, you may find your fan. However the times when I have tried this, i could only buy a minimum of 1,000 pieces. Instead, you can try noting the airflow in Cubic Feet per minute (cfm) and noise generated in Decibels Db or Dba, and try to find a comparable or better fan.

  • Equium L10-300 Heatsink & Fan exchange

The Fan on my sisters laptop has stopped working making the laptop overheat and switch off.
The laptop is an Equium L10-300.
Also the warranty has lapsed which gives us 2 options, have a professional open it up and change the Fan or do it myself.
Does anyone know the model code for the Heatsink & fan assembly and how do I take the machine apart, I've been trying to find a disassembly guide without much look.
    Thanks.

    Hi dude
Hmm as far as I know you will need a whole cooling module which was designed especially for this Equium series.
Such special Toshiba parts can be purchased from the Toshiba ASP which is responsible for your country!
I recommend to contact the guys and to order such part.
Furthermore you should ask for the further help regarding the cooling module replacement. The notebook disassembling is not easy and a little bit tricky. People without any experience could damage some other parts during the disassembling procedure. Therefore its really advisable to ask some technicians for a help.
Best regards and good luck mate

  • Display wont turn on, fans full speed...

so I'm having a problem which i thought I fixed 6 months ago by replacing the pram battery.
    I have a Power PC G5 quad running 10.5
I have the old apple cinema display with the adc to dvi adapter.
When I power up the G5, the display does nothing, and i hear the copmuter power up, but after about 30 seconds, the fans start running full speed and don't stop.
When I push the power button on the display, the power light (within the actual button) lights up, but goes dim when I release the power button. And the display never turns on.
And so without any monitor, i have to force shut down the computer.
I fixed this issue once by re-setting the PRAM.
That was temporary because the issue came back.
But then i replaced the pram battery and its been fine for 6 months.
    Until now.
Oddly enough, i can't seem to reset the pram anymore. I hold down the apple-option-P-R, and then boot the computer up, but i don't hear the chime. And then the fans go full speed after 30 secs. (I can't do a re-start because i have no display. I have to reboot after a hard shut-down. PRAM should still reset this way, shouldn't it?)
Can the pram battery have gone dead after 6 months, when it took years to go dead previously?
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you all!!!

hey Aqua. Thanks for always offering to help.
So here is where I am with this.
It seems that the keyboard isn't communicating with the G5 either.
When I boot up the computer, I push the eject button, but the door to the super drive won't open.
I was going to try and boot up from the startup disk, but I can't open the drive door. The same thing always happens. Fans full speed after 30 secs, and no monitor.
I also can't zap the PRAM. I hold down the apple+option+P+R, but i don't hear the "chime"(is that what we call it?). And then again the fans go full speed after 30 seconds, and with no monitor.
Same thing when I try your suggestion of trying to boot into open firmware.
The computer was not without AC power for any length of time.
So no monitor, and keyboard is unresponsive. Even to open the dvd drive door doesn't work.(is there a way to get that drive door open manually?)
    I appreciate any further suggestions.
I do believe that the PRAM battery can go dead that quick, but it seems odd.
Maybe I'll jsut order one and try it. It is certainly cheap enough!

  • MacBook Pro Fans Not Speeding Up

Today, i began to notice that my MBP was running a bit slower than usual. After a couple hours of use, I also noticed it was running a lot hotter than usual. My laptop was running at 170F with only 30% CPU usage. I didn't make too much of it, and considered it an anomaly. Later on in the day, I noticed began to realize that my fan was running a lot slower than usual at higher temperatures. It was only running at 2000-3000RPM regardless of the temperature of the laptop or how much intensive activity I was doing.
My first thought was "Oh great, the fans must be broken and I'll have to bring it into a shop and go through all that again...". I just had my fans die on my old MacBook, and I didn't want to deal with this again. To test the fans, I downloaded smcFanControl and manually set the fans to run at 6200RPM. Sure enough, manually setting it to 6200RPM sped up the fan. Now I knew that the fans themselves were working and could reach the higher speeds.
What next? I tried a restart. Nothing changed.
What now? Well, I obviously knew that smc involved the fan/temperature control, and I could reset it. So I did that. I reset my smc. Still no change.
I started playing around with the fans using smcFanControl and noticed that no matter what minimum speed I would set it to at what temperature, it would always go with the minimum. If it was 5000, it would use 5000. If it was 6200, it would use 6200. If it was 2000 at 190F, it would use 2000.
What should I do from here? Where should I go? If it was easy for me to get to an Apple Store I would just go there, but transportation is an issue and the store is a ways away, so I'd rather fix it on my own. Obviously, the fans can go up to the normal 6200RPM, but they won't for some rason.
    Other info:
    - All temperature sensors are working and seem to be reporting accurately
    - There has been no physical damage to it lately. No spills, drops, or other impacts.
    - It's a 13-inch, Late 2011 model

If they failed, would they be reporting accurate temperatures? Using iStat, I can still see that they're about right. I've been monitoring temperatures for awhile on my MBP, way before this issue started so I have a feel what they should report.
    Currently they're reporting:
    Enclosures: Body temp to 105F
    HD: 100F-110F
    CPU: 150F-200F
    Heatsinks: 130F-160F
Those seem a bit right. I imagine the equation to calculate fan speed takes the input of the temperature sensors and CPU usage stats and varies accordingly. Well, the temperature sensors are reporting valid data, so if my theory is correct I don't think it's an issue.

  • Heatsink fan runs in Passive System Cooling policy (Thinkvantage Power Manager 3.62)

    Hi all.
I have a T60 model 2008 thinkpad, and its running on Windows 7. All was going well. Two weeks ago, I noticed that it would get a little hotter than usual. As it had been a year since I opened it, I decided to service it. I used the manual and opened up the laptop, gently removed the heatsink, used compressed air to remove the dust and reinstalled it. I also put a pea drop of thermal paste on the CPU for good measure. Put it all back together and it is running significantly cooler.
I usually use my laptop in Maximum battery mode when unplugged, and for that I keep the system cooling policy to passive. My question is, should the fan be running in that mode? Because ever since I serviced it, my heat sink fan runs in passive mode as well, (never noticed it running before in passive mode) and I think it is making my battery run time decrease.
Any ideas on how to fix this or if this is normal will be appreciated. Have a good day all.
    - Ibrahim.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In passive mode the threshold temperature for when fan kicks in is increased, so fan would spin up to the max speed only when it reaches a higher temperature. But the fan will still kick in.
When you put back the heatsink, make sure the thermal paste is applied properly, not too much just enough to have a thin layer on the CPU.
