Heavy bug in iMovie '09?

Hey everybody!
Today, I've received my iLife '09 package. The first thing I wanted to check out was iMovie '09. During my tests, I think I've found a big bug. It would be nice, if someone could verify this.
1. Create a new project (I did it on an external hard drive, connected through USB)
2. Click the camera button, switch to manual and press the Import button and create a new event on the external hard drive and capture (a few seconds will suffice).
3. Hit stop if you haven't done so already, and click finish. Now you should see your clip just the way you expected it.
4. Now delete the whole clip and do a right click on the event, and tell iMovie to trash the rejected files.
5. Finally, trash them from the real trash.
6. Go back to iMovie and click again the camera button. Make sure you're still on manual and click import. Now select the already existing event, and go ahead capturing. Again, a few seconds will suffice.
7. Click stop and finish. Now you may notice your clip is grayed and has a little yellow exclamation mark at the left bottom. You may also experience bad video and bad audio.
Anyone able to reproduce this? I initially thought it was my hardware, but if I select a new event to capture, it works just fine. Or if I delete the event and create a new one with the same name, no problem.
My hardware used in the tests:
Camera: Sony HandyCam Vision CCD-TRV27E PAL (analogue)
Adapter: Canopus ADVC 110
External Hard Drive: WD My Book Studio Edition 1TB

I'm curious, I'll give your steps a try!
Believe what you have found is still a "bug" and "cleaning house" manually is merely a "workaround."
What media format does your camcorder record to, is it Hi8?
HC3 listed is a MiniDV/HDV camcorder. Also have a TRV520 which is Hi8/Digital-8.
What happens if on Step #6, you create a new Event instead of reusing the old event?.. How about following all your steps but importing to the Boot Drive instead of the External Drive?
Creating a new event or accessing a different Event not modified by a "destructive" deletion does not set up a conflict between the physical contents of the Event, what the application still thinks is in the Event based on its initialization scan, and the importation of a new file having the same name as the now non-existent file you just deleted.

  • Warning: 5.1 sound from camcorders: bug in iMovie '08

    In another thread there is a eror reported.
    The 5.1 sound from the Pana SD1 is not well down mixed to stereo by iMovie '08.
    Resulting a strong right and weak left channel.
    The problem is fully reported and documented to Apple and in this other thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5367099#5367099
    Earlier I reported the 5.1 sound downmix to stereo bug in iMovie.
    At the moment I am testing two Sony camcorders: HDR-SR7E en HDR-CX6EK. The first is officially supported by Apple (iMovie '08 camcorder list) and the other is the latest memory card camcorder by Sony.
    Both camcorders have 5.1 sound on board and YES these camcorders cause the same problem in iMovie '08.
    There definitely is a 5.1 stereo downmix bug in iMovie '08.
    I do hope Apple can and will fix this.

    I can hardly imagine, how you can record real surround sound wihtout a bunch of mic on location but just with a single located, small spot, tiny device (=camcorder), but marketing of those devices proof me wrong..
    don't forget to report direct to Apple (this is just the user board here....):

  • First bug in Imovie Mavericks Vluggie on October 23, 2013

    First bug in Imovie Mavericks
    Vluggie on October 23, 2013 #
    Today the new Imovie updated. Looks better and anything after searching and trying, it all seems to work well.
    What strikes me is that there are no moving globes are available on "Maps and Skins" in the material library. In manual states that this is supposed to be there, but this is not the case.
    A globe from an old project recognizes the new Imovie it so I can edit it.
    Like to hear if people have this same problem and how can I report this to Apple?

    Think it is a language issue. I am using a dutch version of imovie where in the content libary only backrounds are available and NOT the globes / maps.

    I organize my 2.700 contacs with Contacts. But there is a heavy bug by filtering contacts with an keyword in the note section:
    If I display an intelligent group and I change only one contact's note with one word, Contacts changes every note in the following entries (alphabetically ordered) with the same word.

  • Photo caching bug in iMovie 11

    I ran into this today first time I have seen it. Wrong photo being displayed in Timeline. http://uimfaq.us/a5q3qA
    Looks like iMovie will retain the last picture used even if you had deleted the previous project. Clearing the caches does fix it.
    I will report this to Apple.

    Hi Daniel,
    I'm not enabled to re-enact your bug ...
    Your screen-grab tells me:
    • you're using a template (which, btw?)
    • you did convert it into a 'Project'
    • you swapped windows to have a timeline
    • you tried to drag a Photo into timeline ... kaboom ...
    but not here ... not a single zic ...
    plus, what caches?
    Photos of a Project are stored in that weird 1fps-Still Images.mov inside that specific project. choosing a New Projects creates a new one - so, no 'cache', imho ( ? ) .
    Or do you duplicate an existing Project to create a version B ?
    please more info about your workflow in 'nano steps' , I'd like to understand your observation (have seen your video, that is obvious) ...

  • Bug report iMovie '11 Title, Picture, Transitions Location Duration bug

    In iMovie '11 version 9.0.1 (1095) there is a very annoying bug if you use Norwegian or Dutch. I presume in other languages as well, but in English I can't repeat the bug.
    Set System Preferences > Language & Text to Nederlands or something else (not English).
    In iMovie, add a Title, try to change Duration in the inspector to something between 10 and 59 seconds. The clip will change to 9:58 seconds.
    I don't know how to do bug reports, so there you go. My parents and parents in law (south of 70) would love to see this fixed. I am very proud they even use this stuff, I don't see them relearn their patiently acquired skills in English.

    In iMovie, if you click iMovie/Provide Feedback, you can send your comments and bug report to Apple.
    This is a user to user forum, so they may or may not see it here. I would not count on it.
    I think it is great that your parents are making movies.

  • Bug in iMovie?

    I was going to edit a new movie in iMovie 11.
    The new versin has a new interface, and I will get used to that, I suppose.
    Only problem is I´m not able to manually edit the "Ken Burns-effect" in the new version. It seems to be automatically only...?
    Is this a problem for others?

    It does work here, so if the error can not be restablished, it's no 'bug'.-
    You're in your Project?
    What is your clip - a still or a selection of a video clip in the Event browser?
    What is teh source of your clip?
    How long is that clip in your Project?

  • Major "BUG" in Imovie 9 - Audio Sync Problem on Export  !

    Well I'm a hard-core Apple user from day one, but unfortunately today I'm not to proud about the latest version of Imovie 9.
    It seems there has been a "MAJOR audio sync problem on export" in Imovie 9, since July 2009. Apple knows about this bug for a long time now, but didn't release any bugfix yet!
    Here's what it's all about:
    It seems if you use the (custom /manual) speed-adjustments and not the preset slider speeds, you will experience (after exporting your movie) annoying bursts of audio from clips that had been set to mude. The strange thing is that you will only experience this audio-bug after exporting, you will NOT experience it in the project playback mode!
    Here's what you can do:
    Find ALL the clips in your Project that are Speed Adjusted.
    Instead of using a "Custom Speed" percentage, use any of the "Preset Speeds"
    Preset Speeds on the Slider = 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%
    Then, export your project as usual.
    No more sync issues.
    Really hope That Apple will come up with a real BUGFIX soon.
    It's a shame that a major bug in a otherwise GREAT PRODUCT, hasen't been fixed yet!
    What's wrong with Apple?...this is not one of their finest hours.
    Still A BIG fan from Imovie HD,...I'll chance to Imovie 9 when the bugs are finaly fixed!

    This is TERRIBLE! I have spent so much time working on this project, and I really don't want to adjust the speed settings to the preset levels, BECAUSE I need to motion of the video to match certain musical points. I can't re-film my video, and I needed this project done TODAY. I made a music video with some kids at summer camp, and today is the last day- the day we were supposed to all watch it together, and now, I've got NOTHING!!!! (Because I can't export it without all those glitches!)
    I am MAJORLY DISAPPOINTED on this one. I've made movies in windows movie maker before, and purposely used imovie, because you know, everything on macs is supposed to be better. Well, I guess I was wrong.

  • Photo bug in iMovie

    Has anyone else had the problem of importing photos into iMovie.
    Cant seem to get it to work.

    when put new items in there I have tto authenticate
    with my passwords so maybe that was the problem.
    Good point. That could be the problem. When iMovie tries to save the rendered file in the Media folder inside the project, the Mac OS may be telling iMovie you don't have permission.
    The user permissions inside an iMovie project can get messed up, especially if the project has been moved from one disk to another. The permissions INSIDE the project may and be different than the iMovie project itself. More about that here:

  • Has the bug stopping iMovie Exporting been cured in iMovie 5 and 6?

    In iMovie 4 you cannot export if Final Cut Express is on the computer.
    There is a workaround -which I use - but has the problem been cured in later versions?
    Ian.

    It works great. In fact, I have both installed on my computer, and will frequently move projects and stuff back and forth between each application, depending on what I am doing. But yes, export works great in iMovie HD '06.

  • Edited clips and transitions don't render properly. Bugs in iMovie 7.1.4?

    I'm using iMovie on a MacBook and have been using it for quite some time. I believe version 7.1.4 was downloaded during a recent Software Update. About the time I downloaded it, my iMovie started going haywire. I'm not positive these problems are as a result of the download, but I can't be sure.
    More specifically, when I edit a movie and review what I've edited, the clips are out of order and the transitions may or may not work. Sometimes, I'll be able to see things in the preview pane properly. At others, the preview pane isn't working right.
    Has anyone else had the same problem? If so, how did you fix it?
    I've tried deleting my old projects and events, but that didn't work. Resarting the iMovie didn't work, either. I'm about to go back to the old version of iMovie.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    Often the problem is sound and transitions -
    • Extract audio first
    • then apply transition
    • then adjust the extracted audio so that they fade in and out
    Working solution to a known problem
    ELSE
    *Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named. com.apple.iMovie.plist
    While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
    Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
    there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
    iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
    to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • 15" MBP with Nvidia vs. Non for heavy use of iMovie

    I would like to purchase a new 15" MacBook Pro and am wondering if I should get the more expensive one with the Nvidia Graphics Card or without.  I like to do a lot of video editing on iMovie and have thousands and thousands of photos on iPhoto that I like to edit.
    Do I need the Nvidia graphics card or should I get the standard 15" model and up the memory/processor/hard drive?
    Thank you!

    Perhaps if I put it this way...
    Does anyone know what temperature I need to stay under so that the video card does not detach again?
    I have istat monitor and it shows a few different temps.

  • OLD BUG is back: Heavy JClient Bug regarding to scrolling within a JTable.....

    Hi,
    I'm just evaluating the new features of JDev 9.0.3.988 (preview) and found an old bug back again!
    see: Re: Fetching data from database for login
    The current behaviour is slightly different:
    You have a generated JClient form displaying a table. There are more rows than the table can show at once. You scroll down with the cursor keys until some new rows are fetched. Now scroll up again. Make sure you only use cursor keys. If you reach the upper area of the table you can see that the StatusBar isn't refreshing it's current row counter and all possibly connected fields to the same binding don't update themself either.
    You can see this behavior by using only wizard generated source code based on the SCOTT/TIGER schema.
    This bug should have been definitively fixed in a previous beta version...
    Can anyone give a comment on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Torsten.

    This bugfix doesn't work!!!!!!
    It makes the table scrollable via cursor keys, but now scrolling with the mouse isn't possible anymore!!!!I see the bug when you apply the above mentioned workaround that leads to scrolling due to double handlers for valueChanged event
    Lets try to fix this in the JUTableBinding source. From my test runs on the when the same fix is applied on JUTableBinding source, the scroll works fine in both key/mouse modes.
    Let us know if you find otherwise.
    The fix in JUTableBinding is:
    Look up source for JUTableBinding in your setup. (It'd be in (JDEVHOME)\bc4j\src\bc4juisrc.zip
    Save a copy in your current project in the project's source path maintaining the class's package structure - save the file into sourcepath\oracle\jbo\uicli\jui\JUTableBinding.java
    Replace the existing valueChanged method with the following:
          public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent event)
             try
                ListSelectionModel listSelModel = (ListSelectionModel) event.getSource();
                if (mSelRowInProg || listSelModel.getValueIsAdjusting())
                   return;
                RowIterator iter = getRowIterator();
                if (!listSelModel.isSelectionEmpty())
                   if (iter == null)
                      return;
                   int selectTabRowIndex = listSelModel.getMinSelectionIndex();
                   if (getFormBinding() != null)
                      ((JUPanelBinding)getFormBinding()).callBeforeRowNavigated(getIteratorBinding());
                   int idx = selectTabRowIndex - iter.getRangeStart();
                   if (idx >= iter.getRangeSize())
                      idx = idx - iter.getRangeSize() + 1;
                      iter.scrollRange(idx);
                      idx = selectTabRowIndex - iter.getRangeStart();
                   else if (idx < 0)
                      iter.scrollRange(idx);
                      idx = 0;
                   iter.setCurrentRowAtRangeIndex(idx);
             catch(Exception ex)
                reportException(ex);
                refresh(true /*selectRow*/);
    This is a really heavy bug making the whole JUTableBinding useless... any comments on this? :((

  • Problem With iMovie Theme - Possible Bug?

    I'm trying to use the "lower third" element from the white reflection theme in my movie. The problem is that I would like to apply it to the middle of a clip.
    I edit the clip but cutting out about 15 seconds off the front, then try and add the theme element. iMovie starts the theme element at the very front of the clip, which I've cut out.
    I've tried splitting the video clip as well, same problem.
    Anyone else running into this? Seems like a bug in iMovie.
    Mike

    indeed, I can recreate your observation:
    when you split a clip in a project (part I/II) .. and apply part II to a theme, it is not only part II but the whole clip (starting with part I) which gets applied to....
    that's not logical in terms of user interface, nor convenient.. ok, somekind of 'bug' ...
    follow Bengt's advice, to create a real, seperate, individual, non-connected, solo clip... ;))

  • IMovie 09 uses up 4GB of RAM in less than 2 minutes

    Hi,
    The topic says it all i think..
    To be honest i don't know if i had this issue before Snow Leopard i have only been using it for about a week. I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 2.6GHz with 4GB RAM installed. I have never had any issues with the RAM being used up this fast before ever (and i'm a pretty heavy photoshop user and gamer).
    With just a simple project and little events i make a short clip, some transitions and a background tune. Then i minimize iMovie to check my Mail or another app and notice the mac became horribly slow and minimizing takes a good minute. Then i check Activity Monitor and iStat Pro to find within just a few minutes i not only used up 4GB of RAM but only am well into 4GB Swap File usage, i need to restart to turn my Mac back into the fast Mc it was before i started iMovie.
    Before writing this i did a few tests with garageband and a couple of other apps including Adobe Suite etc... i still have a little over 2GB RAM free. Then i start iMovie, open my project and mess around a little.... wham, RAM gone, is this what's known as a memory leak ?
    Any thoughts on this? I started experimenting / learning iMovie because i have a wedding DVD to make soon, i need this software to work right.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

    MPEG2 and AVCHD are two different codecs. Your footage will be one or the other, but not both. MPEG2 is used more often in standard definition cameras.
    Having said that, your memory problem is unusual. iMovie uses a lot of memory, and if you are constrained on memory, it uses swap files. However, mine has never used up 4GB of real memory in 2 minutes. It looks like you have a memory leak somewhere (which could be a bug in iMovie).
    I don't know how to find it since I can't replicate it on my system.
    One thing that may help you monitor this is the free application called [MemoryStick|http://www.tidbits.com/matt>. You can install it and monitor your swapfiles real time. You can also see how much real memory and virtual memory iMovie is using at the moment through Activity Monitor (which I presume you are already doing.)
    With MemoryStick, if I notice that I have 5,6, or 7 swapfiles going, and they are over 2GB (they have been as high as 4GB) then I know it is time to re-boot.
