Heavy hdd activity under high memory load, system unresponsive
Hi there,
don't know where to post this.
On a system without SWAP and on zfs root on top of luks encryption when available memory becomes low, the desktop - X-Window Xfce becomes unresponsive.
Sometimes this takes many minutes and it comes back, or I still can close an application with the hardly moving mouse, to free up some memory.
The hdd-led does blink heavily.
Sometimes the X-Window system dies.
Is there something I can do about this, is this expected behaviour?
On windows XP I did run whitout swap for quite a long time - years, and when available memory got low, usually just a programm died.
That way I did like much more, than the system getting slow because of using the swap heavily.
So what do I have?

4GB RAM
SSD
no Swap
LUKS cryptroot

Thanks a lot for the many responses.
So the first and most easy for me would be to just add swap. Or some more ram.
But still I'm new to arch linux. And better I learn now already, than later, when there might be really bad situations.
The linux-ck package I tried. But there I'm somehow lost how do I integrate the zfs?
I have the following packages regarding zfs:
zfs-git 0.6.3_r170_gd958324f_3.18.6_1-1
zfs-utils-git 0.6.3_r170_gd958324f_3.18.6_1-1
these should be from the following source:
[demz-repo-core]
SigLevel = Required DatabaseOptional TrustedOnly
Server = http://demizerone.com/$repo/$arch
And these updates are running well. That got updated already several times.
I did install just the linux-ck package.
with this repository:
[repo-ck]
Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
But there, I don't get the zfs support into the initramfs?

Well, back to the described behaviour:
It finally it did kill the x-Window-System, when it ran out of memory, I did run the update from there. It was compiling palemoon.
If I read it right from the log, that was 18:17, well some hours later, that does not really matter. The system was still alive but the whole X-Window System with the running compilation session therein was gone.
So there is no question that it was really low on memory.
After that, I did the update just from the console, no X-Window running at all.
Here is part of the log of free RAM. I have another log of the arcstat, the ram zfs was using. I'm not sure, if I get them time-syncronized.
It's all only in my spare time, there are other things to do as well.

OK, that for now.
Thanks a lot.
edit:
Maybe I should add, this was just a different situation of running low on memory.
There was a webbrowser open, well with quite many tabs. using a lot of memory.
And that update with pacaur, that did invoke a compilation of the palemoon webbrowser - based on firefox.
But for this, I would have been happy, with this open webbrowser getting killed, the system being resposive. Or other tasks getting killed, the system reacting on user input.
I think for being on use as desktop system, it should still respond to keypresses or mousemovements.
Don't really know if there are other considerations for server use. But not beeing able to free some ram by killing some processes, don't really know if that is better on server or desktop.

How does the new i7 Mini behave under high CPU load?
Did anybody test a new quad-core i7 under high CPU load, using all cores at 100% during more than 15 minutes?
How does it behave (from a thermal point of view)?
Is the fan loud under such load?
Does it get as hot as a Macbook Air?
Do it feels like you're pushing it above its design goals, or does it look well suited for 100% CPU on all cores?

I tried using CCleaner to delete the cookies and clean my registry but it didn't work. I also tried chkdsk /f but that didn't work.
Whenever I try to run firefox it ramps up the memory and indefinitely loads a blank page. Considering I deleted my cookies in firefox with CCleaner then it should be loading my homepage which is Bing.com. I am able to maximize and minimize the browser but it loads and is set to "not responding" by my OS so I can't click any buttons like "home" or get into the options menu.
I am speaking to you now from internet explorer. :-(Don't know how but it was gone for a day or two, and I updated but now it's back again and I haven't done anything to cause it. If it doesn't go away I'm going to go to a less secure but more stable browser, like chrome. I wish I didn't have to do that but at this point I don't see any other choice.

Problem... High CPU load with HDD. Please Help
Hello all,
Im stuck. Ive got a MSI KA790GX which has poor HDD access/transfer, low burst rate and very high CPU load.
As far as i know the Western Digital 640gb WD6401AALS Black should be a fast hard drive. Which according to reviews/HD Tune,
should be:-
Minimum 60mb/sec
Maximum 120mb/sec
Average 95mb/sec
Access 12ms
Burst 110mb/sec
CPU 5%
No matter what I try, i always get poor results...
My MSI KA790GX
Minimum 41mb/sec ~ 54mb/sec
Maximum 104mb/sec ~ 108mb/sec
Average 86mb/sec ~89mb/sec
Access 12ms
Burst 60mb/sec ~ 80mb/sec
CPU 26% ~ 44%!!!!!!!!
I could accept not getting the same high speed results as the review/reference, even if the burst rate sucked.
But one of the cores goes to 50%-60% load during hdd activity. Thats just crazy!!
I have tried...
IDE mode, AHCI, RAID Ready, RAID Single Disk
SATA Port 1, 2, 3, 4 + 5
Different SATA cables
Flashed bios, cleared bios, optimised defaults, failsafe defaults
Windows XP 32bit, Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit. fresh installs
MSI CD Drivers, MSI Web Drivers, AMD/ATI Web Drivers
... and combinations of.
I have also tested the WD640gb Black on another older PC, with Nvidia (55?) chipset and slower (1.9ghz x2) cpu.
Transfer rates were slightly better than my KA790GX but, Burst Rate = 115mb/sec and CPU usage = 13%.
I also tried a Seagate 1.5tb (ST31500341AS) on both PCs,
Nvidia chipset
Minimum 65mb/sec
Maximum 134mb/sec
Average 107mb/sec
Access 14ms
Burst 83mb/sec
CPU 7%
On my MSI KA790GX
Minimum 55mb/sec
Maximum 120mb/sec
Average 100mb/sec
Access 14ms
Burst 87mb/sec
CPU 33%!!!!
Could someone please please help, ive spent hours and hours on this. Its doin my head in.
I just hope its something stupid ive missed, cos i still not used my HD4850 from christmas :-(
Thanks.Sm3K3R
Not sure how to check PIO/DMA mode on a SATA device. IDE devices show DMA enabled.
BIOS version 1.4 - 29 December 2008, and now version 1.51
Fredrik
I have Vista 64, but i did try XP32 and Vista32 and got similar poor results.
I tested HDD speed with, HD Tune 2.55 and HD Tune 3.50 trial.
No auto-start programs really, Windows clean installs + any drivers.
Quadrifoglio Verde
CPU @ default 2800mhz, All mem bios options to auto/defaults
Windows Experience Index, CPU Score = 5.3
AMD Overdrive
Integer Computation = 8220
Floating Point Computation = 5325
Memory speed = 1770
Cache Speed = 10790
System Performance = 7403
Bas
I used HDTune because I could reference to other results. Whats a better program to use?
Windows Experience Index, HDD Score = 5.9.
But I have no reference and cant be sure of cpu load.
Sepher
Bios defaults to C&C and C1E off so i have tried them. Also windows power settings, balanced/high performance.
UPDATE
Reinstalled Vista64 but loaded the AHCI driver from the disk config screen. This seems to have stopped the high cpu usage during disk activity.
HDTune with Windows Power settings @ High Performance,
Min = 52mb/sec
Max = 106mb/sec
Ave = 88mb/sec
Access = 12ms
Burst = 77mb/sec
CPU = 3.4%
HDTune with Windows Power settings @ Balanced
Min = 54mb/sec
Max = 104mb/sec
Ave = 87mb/sec
Access = 12ms
Burst = 65mb/sec
CPU = 12%
So now transfer speed is about 10% slower than reference. But burst speed is terrible.
I also used IBM Feature Tool to change the HDD AAM to 'performance mode' 254 as suggested elsewhere.
Long shot as the hdd performs ok with other hardware. same results.
Also MSI support asked me to try a newer bios, version 1.51. same results.
Anyone know what the AMD 7-Series Chipsets Disk Performance Utility does, and should i run it in Vista64?
Thanks for all the replies, hope i can sort this, not played any PC games since Quake 3 on my ti4600... -
When loading a page with many hires images, Firefox becomes really slow and scrolling becomes jumpy then eventually becomes completely unresponsive. Unusual high memory usage of up to 2gigs just for firefox when loading these pages. This was never a problem with v3.6.
I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy... -
When I tried to load some mp3 files on to my samsung brightside I looked under card memory and my songs were there but when I clicked on my music it said no memory available remove files and I have an 8 gb micro sd card in and there is nothing else on it
Whew.... got it to work after days of trying to figure.
Got answer here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1450821 from zblaze.
Wiped phone completely, restored as NEW iphone through itunes. Checked 'Sync all Music'.
After that happens you can restore from backup. -
X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging system
>X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging systemA Hey guys,
I'm running 2 GF 8800 GTs (PCIe .) cards on a MSI Eclipse SLI board. My Audigy2 ZS PCI runned fine in this system.
I just replaced the Audigy by a PCIe X-Fi (EMU20K2 audio processor - not the xtreme audio from MSI).
Now I'm dealing with the following issue:
- System startup is slow
- in Windows, Mouse is slow, stuttering
- high CPU-Load
- very slow system response
!!! Attention !!! I had this problems allready at the st boot with the X-Fi, when the driver from creative wasn't installed (the card was recognized as "HD Audio" bei Windows 7). Installing the drivers didn't help.
If I install only one graphics card, the system runns fine and I can use the X-Fi and it's Software without problems.
If I replace the X-Fi by the PCIe Xtreme Audio from MSI, System runns fine.
If I use Win XP with the two GFX cards and the X-Fi, System runns fine.
Can you help me?
Regards from snowy Germany
User....Hi there,
got the same problem if i use my two Nvidia GTX260.
My system:
Asus P6T
I7 920 @ 3,8GHz
2GB ram
Gigabyte GTX260 OC Edition
Nvidia GTX260
X-Fi XtremeGamer
-System (Win7x64) takes ~0min to start.
-Stuttering mouse, keyboard everything >.<
Deactivating the onboard sound doesnt help.
Newest Nvidia and Creative driver too =(
The system runs fine without the X-FI and two GTX260 no errors ect...
One GTX260 runs also fine with the X-FI
But two graphic cards and the X-FI..... **bleep** =/
I use debian as my main OS and it run still fine with both graphic cards and the x-fi...
so i think its just a driver problem.
Hope it will be fixed soon =/
If someone have any sugestions...please help us.
Greetings from Germany also =D

Facing problems with URLConnection under high load
Hi,
I have a piece of code that acts as a load balancer. Under high load scenario - 200+ different simulataneous users, it throws some errors.
Following is a snippet from that code -
URL url = new URL(site);
URLConnection urlconnection = url.openConnection();
urlconnection.setDoInput(true);
urlconnection.setDoOutput(true);
urlconnection.setUseCaches(false);
DataOutputStream dataoutputstream =
new DataOutputStream(urlconnection.getOutputStream());
dataoutputstream.writeBytes(posServiceRequest);
dataoutputstream.flush();
dataoutputstream.close();
InputStream inputstream = urlconnection.getInputStream();
httpservletresponse.setContentType(urlconnection.getContentType());
rewriteStreams(inputstream, httpservletresponse.getOutputStream());
inputstream.close();
Somewhere after around 200 odd users, this piece of code throws an error - "Error writing to server", a stacktrace print shows that the error occurs at the following line -
InputStream inputstream = urlconnection.getInputStream();
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-rahulMore information please. What is the exception class, what is its entire text, and what is the stack trace.

Weblogic 10.3.2: Under load, system gives 404 error when accessing page
Hi all,
I am running Weblogic 10.3.2 with a J2EE EAR deployed against it. I am using JDBC data sources to connect to an Oracle 11g database. I am running on Linux Red Hat 5. The machine has 16 GB RAM and 16 cores of an Intel Xeon processor.
I have recorded some Grinder scripts to simulate the HTTP requests going back and forth from the web browser to the app server in an attempt to play them back in volume to do some load testing. I am finding that even under relatively moderate load, after some time (say 30-60 minutes) when trying to access the application in my web browser (and in Grinder), I am getting 404 errors.
The strange thing is that the app server is still running fine and there are no errors thrown in any Weblogic log file. There is nothing wrong in the verbosegc log file and the CPU usage via "sar" is very low. The number of JDBC connections is well below the threshold for concern. Sometimes, if I wait a while (hours or more), it sometimes comes back up and works fine again, until the next worjload hits it. I have studied thread dumps and see nothing unusual.
I've been very puzzled with this for days. Does anyone else know what might be wrong or something else I could check to get more information?Hi, I have the same kind of problem. but when it happens I noticed strange line in the access.log like these ones :
access.log00003:192.168.104.198 - - [20/Apr/2012:12:16:45 +0200] "ancelActionID=CCACustomerProfile&contactreasonwrapuplaunchable=true&contactCode=&contactType=&contactInformation=&Customer.CustomerNumber=5146990&processheadertitle=&PageState.CaseNumber=&PageState.CaseReference=&caseId=42ceed6436cbd7c70136cf3ea82c3b4a&" 404 0
access.log00004:192.168.104.122 - - [20/Apr/2012:14:02:16 +0200] "s-xpsdocument, application/x-ms-xbap, application/x-ms-application, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */*" 404 0
access.log00004:192.168.105.122 - - [20/Apr/2012:14:02:18 +0200] "-ms-xbap, application/x-ms-application, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */*" 404 0
access.log00004:192.168.104.122 - - [20/Apr/2012:14:02:20 +0200] "application/x-ms-application, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */*" 404 1214
As you can see, instead of containiing the HTTP action (GET/POST /someurl HTTP/1.1) it contains part of the url or even part of the Accept http header...
When your 404 happened did you have those strange entries in your access.log ? Did you succeed in resolving it ? -
Flash player mac - high cpu load
why does flash player produce such a high cpu load under Mac OS X? I have a MacBook 2,1 w/ an Intel Core 2 Duo cpu. When I watch a tiny youtube movie in any browser, the fan gets really loud, and activity monitor shows 50% cpu load.
Hi ... I use admin account only to install new software or games ... for all other uses I log in as an ordinary account
But even when logged in with admin account the same prb persists ... cause of this flash player prb I have even stopped playing games on FB & Zynga ...
For this flash player problem I even took it to acer service center and since I have extended service warranty the engineers there ran acomplete check on ram, hdd, graphic card and they also did a complete fresh install of win 7 home premium 64 bit edition. They even completely serviced it, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste ... but even they were baffled that my system can stand up to high intensity graphic games running from HDD or DVD rom or USB pen drive but if I try to run graphic flash player games for long ie castleville or watch a long movie on you tube then flash player can single handedly cause CPU usage to be constantly high leading to system getting heated up.
Guess will just have to be content without flash ... but some sites require flash player to be enabled and therein lies the problem

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.
Tom -
Hey Guys, I been having problems with my mac. I'm running 10.8.5 on my 2008 Power mac tower and recently I have been having problems with my mac
going real slow. I opened Activity Monitor and Noticed something called "Installer" and it was using 90% of my memory and the only thing I can do is quit the process. Does anyone know why this is happening?I ran EtreCheck and i'll post my results. I will add more ram after I fix the problem, and adding an SSD is a good option. I thought about it but
I was holding off because I was thinking of buying a new computer. I will try to keep my sysstem drive clean in the future. After Linc Davis posted about the Trojan i'm planning of doing that. I have a cloned mac drive, I updated the other day using SuperDuper.
My EtreCheck info
Problem description:

760GM-E51 locking up on heavy HDD usage
Please see hardware information in sig.
Everything was running smoothly for quite some time with the WD and Seagate SATA HDDs using IDE emulation (no Hitachi at this point). Over the last month the system has been locking up unexpectedly, no useful error reports in Windows to suggest the cause. The main factor appeared to be transferring large quantities of data between those two drives. So I look arround, found out about the WD issues w.r.t sleeping after only 8 seconds and TLDR, increased the sleep time to 5 minutes, the drive didnt support TLDR so I could not enable it.
For my own personal needs, and to aid the fault-finding I purchased the Hitachi 2tb drive, which I installed last night. Then moved both SATA drives from IDE emulation to AHCI, incase the TLDR difficulties were causing the SATA controller to drop the WD drive unexpectedly if it took too long to respond - which with IDE emulation could cause serious issues. Moved some data between the WD and Seagate (~10gb, which was normally enough to trigger the problem), nothing happened, which was a good sign. I then left the Hitachi drive formatting, and during this time decided to stream a video over the WiFi connection. A few minutes in the video stops, the SAMBA shares are disconnected, and the machine no longer responds to ping. At the machine there is no response to keyboard or mouse, and the HDD activity light is solid red - the lock-ups are still occurring, exactly sa before. I should clarify that at this point if the TFT was not on, switching on the TFT tends to result in a large gray image, at supposedly the correct resolution.
I have run Prime95 for many hours, with seperate instances for all 4 cores (+ correct affinity settings), at both "In-place large FFTs" (max heat & power consumption), and Blend (max ram tested), with no problems. I believe I have also run memtest, but can double-check if necessary. I have also used the machine extensively for numerical simulation with no problems. It would seem that if this was a CPU or power issue there would be other side-effects, and more obvious crashes. I am left stuck with the situation that I believe it is either one of the harddrives behaving badly - and the SATA controller handling this inappropriately, or a chipset issue.
I do have a byte-for-byte copy of the OS, and could install it on the hitachi drive, but frankly something more light-weight might be preferable for this fault-finding exercise. Are my assumptions so far appropriate? How should I proceed? Please advise.

You really do not know how memory works do you?
Please dont be condescending.
Quote from: Bas on 03-July-11, 02:33:33
The memory that is being used in Desktop is unbuffered and non-ECC, as such it takes 1 unstable cell to cause an BSOD instandly.
Ofcourse it depends a bit on the instruction, but be sure you will see BSOD's every time you hit that cell.
This does not match my own experience, the experience of others I know who do a fair degree of overclocking (and hence have to avoid these instabilities), or match my understanding of how the average OS works. There is no reason why a BSOD should occur when a single address comes back with the wrong value - that is utter nonsense, that is also the reason why you dont see BSODs whenever a buffer overflow occurs. Corrupting areas of memory by screwing up a pointer in C has basically the same effect as simulating a single error from unstable memory, and that is highly unlikely to cause a BSOD. If you start overwriting data in kernel mode there is plenty of reason to believe the OS will crash, but in user mode? it is unlikely to have a major effect at all. It is only because failing RAM tends to error at such a high rate that these kinds of crashes occur, (equivalent to eventually addressing something important and the usual error-handling failing). We are not talking about chips which are consistently returning bad data, we are talking about instability, the rate of that instability has a massive impact on its outcome.
Quote from: Bas on 03-July-11, 02:33:33
It's not a massive over-generalisation, as these are not servers that have ECC (Error-Correction-Code), buffering or registering of memory.
Bad memory in desktops is a hit -> wrong data -> BSOD thing
Server memory is different: hit -> ECC-check -> bad cell -> rewrite due to ECC corrective code -> placed in new cell -> deliver correct data.
Your system will NOT run for hours without a BSOD if your memory is bad.
Memory is NOT your problem, 100% sure of that.
This makes no sense, I have already explained that Memtest failed, by definition this means that an address in memory returned an incorrect value. According to your reasoning I should already be experiencing BSODs constantly. This is clearly not what is happening. Having said that, the memory returning the wrong value is clearly incorrect behaviour, and even if it were not causing the lock-ups, this is evidence of the system being unstable. Im not sure why you are so forcibly trying to argue with this.

As for Smart, I can show you plenty drives where Smart reports nothing and the drive is bad, I can also show you drives where Smart reports it's bad and the drive is trouble free.
Smart is a dumb as a duck, but for companies useful as when it tells you it's bad it's saver to replace the drive before it does go bad.
Smart is not a trustworthy mechanism, it consist of counters that try to predict the future, nothing more nothing less.
Test your harddisks with the manufacturer tools, pretty sure it will find the bad one....it is NOT your memory.
I referred to SMART because that is what cronnin was making me check. Im fully aware that SMART is not a definite indicator of the health of the harddrive, and I never claimed it was, that was not in response to your comments.
I am trying my best to be cordial, but am unhappy with the tone and accuracy of some of these posts, which makes it very difficult to counter your argument in a civilized manner. I dont want this thread to devolve into a heated argument and I dont have any personal problem with you. Can we please have another moderator check over these posts and clean up this situation? It seems to me that if we still want to discuss this memory matter, it would be better suited to PM so as not to clutter this thread. Do you think that is a sensible course of action? -

Hi,
I noticed yesterday that my machine was becoming increasingly slow, where once it was pretty snappy. It's a Compaq SR5250NX with 1GB of RAM. Upon checking vmstat, I noticed that the "Free" column was ~191MB. Now, the only applications I had open were FireFox 2.0.11, GAIM, and StarOffice. I closed all of them, and the number reported in the "Free" column became approximately 195MB. "Pagefile" was about 5.5x that size. There were no other applications running and it's a single user machine, so I was the only one logged in. System uptime: 9 days.
I logged out, logged back in, to see if that had an affect. It did not. Rebooted and obviously, that fixed it. Now with only FireFox, GAIM, and a terminal open, vmstat reports "Free" as ~450MB. I've noticed if I run vmstat every few seconds, the "Free" total keeps going down. Example:

In any event, we can see that FireFox is sucking up 145MB (??!?!!? crazy...) XSun, 200MB, and java 190MB. I'm running Java Desktop System (Release 3) so I assume that is what accounts for the the high memory usage RE: java process. But, XSun, 200MB?
Is this normal and I just need to toss another gig in, or what?
Thanks -
Sudden high memory usage, can't find cause
I did a big update yesterday, and today I've started to notice very high memory usage. I wasn't keeping track before so I can't say how much it increased, but I've never had problems before, and the slowness and lack of responsiveness have been noticeable, though I haven't ruled out other possible causes for that. Here's the output of 'free -m':
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 7971 7826 144 0 1 149
-/+ buffers/cache: 7674 296
Swap: 9215 458 8757
It wasn't as bad as that right after startup, though usage still seemed suspiciously high. What makes this whole thing a mystery to me is that none of my running processes seem to be using that much memory! Here's the output of 'top -b -n 1':

I wouldn't expect the '%MEM's to add up to exactly the real usage, but this isn't even close! So, what could be using up all of my memory? I have /tmp mounted to ram, but that's only a few megabytes. I really have no idea where to go from here.
The relevant portion of my pacman log is below, since I don't know how to get just a compact list of the updated packages. Most notably, the kernel was upgrades, from 3.9.9-1 to 3.10.3-1.

Reverting to the 13.6 version solved the problem. Lesson learned: if there's a ton of memory being used that isn't owned by a running process, start looking for bug reports involving drivers. Especially drivers known for being, well, pretty bad. Was there any method I could have used that would have told me that Catalyst was using all my ram, or is kernel-space memory usage pretty much a black box?
