Heavy static in recording

Captivate 3: I am using a high quality Shure mic with a Tube
MP Preamp, and external USB Behringer sound card. When I record in
Captivate, I have a huge amount of underlying static/white noise
sounding material underneath. It's got to be something with
Captivate as I can go immediately out and record using something
like Sound Forge and the recording is absolutely pristine. I have
queried tech support and they don't seem to be any help. This is
holding up recordings as the audio is unusable, even if I run it
through a program to remove 'continuous noise'. I realize that I
could record separately and import but this is very difficult to
synchronize when you are narrating a software demonstration. Does
anyone out there have any ideas? Desperation is setting in. MANY
THANKS!

I have had the same problem with Captivate 1 and 2. I have 2
pretty workable solutions:
1. I use a cheap Logitech microphone but have perfected
exactly how far away my mouth should be (quite close) and if
possible the microphone should be higher than the mouth. I do all
the recording in a carpeted basement - room noise is amazingly
loud. I do have an expensive Sennheiser mic but it is just too
sensitive.
2. I now record with my Mac built-in microphone which has an
ambient-noice reducer. I record the entire presentation's audio,
then import it into Captivate using the option (I think option 2)
that says record it all onto one slide and then use the audio
advanced editing to assign it to each slide. I know you said you
really didn't want to do this but the up side is that the quality
is better and smoother since the recording was done in the same
file. In the past when I have done each audio file separately for
each slide, there are obvious differences in the tonation,
etc.

  • [Problem] Line in port giving intervalled static when recording

    Hi,
My MacBook late '08, has started having recording issues when recording any instrument through the line in port. I have tried using different recording software and cables however, even when anything makes contact with the inside of the port, the static starts. If you turn up the recording level, the static 'blips' get faster and louder.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot.

It "sounds" like you might need a preamp for the mic to bring up the input levels to line-in requirements.

  • Static DNS record deleted automatically- Windows 2008 R2 SP1

    Hi,
I have scoured the Interweb and tried all suggestions to no avail for this one. Here's the scenario:
My client has a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (Windows 2003 domain/forest functional level) server which is a DC and DNS server. The problem is that a DNS record for an Exchange 2010 server is getting deleted every 10 or 40 minutes. This started occurring for no obvious
reason a few weeks ago. The impact is that users cannot connect to Exchange (caching does not seem to help with this, which is odd). I disabled scavenging, which did not resolve the issue. I enabled auditing and found a 4662 event revealing that the domain
administrator account was deleting the server A record (and pointer record). Why this is happening is what I am trying to investigate next: possible bug? The zone is configured as non secure- maybe making it securing it would help? But this does not explain
why the record is being deleted. There is no NIC teaming implemented, which I understand can cause issues.
As an interim measure I created a script employing dnscmd that recreates the record every 15 minutes, which works for the most part, but not always, which is why I added a deny permission on the record for the domain Administrators group, seems so far to
have prevented the record from being deleted.
Any advise on the cause of this and how to investigate why the record is being deleted will be much appreciated!

Hi- thanks for that. However I have seen those links and already followed them: I turned off scavenging (default 7 day configuration) and the record still gets deleted (scavenging date is not due till a later data in any case). Also the record is static
so it would not get scavenged? The option to delete the record if stale is unchecked.
I already enabled auditing and identified event 4662, which identified that the domain administrator account that is deleting the record:

  • Static when recording through usb

I've been using line 6 gearbox to record a line 6 pod xt live directly into the usb port of my macbook. however, while recording in garageband '08 i will get this short period of static that lasts for about a few seconds and seems to come and go every minute or two. I've tried using a different usb cable and trying the two different ports as well. I'm think my pod xt live is ok, so i'm not sure if the problem is a hardware issue with my macbook's usb ports, or if it's a software issue with garageband. Has anyone encountered anything like this? Any help woul dbe appreciated. thanks!

I have the same microphone and am experiencing the same problem, though the frequency varies. Sometimes I can record for more than an hour with no static, and at other times, within minutes of rebooting the driver. I am still running Tiger. I've taken to unplugging my microphone when not in use. That seems to cut down on the frequency a bit.

  • Behringer UCA 202 USB connector source of static in recording Kaossilator

Recording the Kaossilator into GB was producing intermittent static; things would begin keenly but a few bars into the tune - randomly - the static arrived. After checking myriad items such as power supply and cables I got rid of the Behringer UCA 202 USB interface and returned to a Griffin iMic w/ Y cable.
That seems to have solved the static issue. Yay, Griffin.

Hello Triage, the problem that you had with your intermittent static sounds exactly the same as the problem i'm having with my Art Tube project series preamp. Although I have replaced the USB cable the problem is persisting. I have a posted a thread in the garage band 08 forum title Art Preamp distortion and fuzz. Any advice you could give would be fantastic.
I'm sure you can identify with my frustration.

  • Static DNS records disappearing

    Hi all,
Three of our static DNS entries keep disappearing and we have to keep adding them back in.  Sometimes they stay in for 1-2 weeks, sometimes only a few hours.  We have many static entries but it is always these same three that give us issues.  We
are running four Windows 2008 (non-R2) Domain Controllers.  Two of these machines are Server Core and the other two are full versions.
I have followed Ace's blog (thanks btw!) about looking for a duplicate zone but I don't think this is the case.  So I have turned on DNS auditing.  When the record gets deleted it logs EventID 5136 sixteen times:
    <REMOVED LOG FOR READABILITY>
From these logs it appears that DC-SERVER3$ is what is deleting these items.  Is that a correct assumption?  DC-SERVER3 is one of the four domain controllers and is one of two running server core.
I am unsure where to go from here.  Any help would be MUCH appreciated.  Thanks!

I tried posting the event logs in a <code> block above but it was very unreadable.  Is there a better way to do this?  I will paste them here for the time being:

  • Static when recording with microphone

Posting from my new iPad 2. Has anyone else had issues with the microphone? Whenever I record from any app there is tons of static when playing it back.

So I am one more joining the group . after "thinking" about it , reading some stuff from the internet and doing some tries , these are what i have figured out .
Please note that these are not solutions , they are thoughts and might be 100 % wrong.
    1) The The front-facing camera assembly includes the camera, headphone jack, and microphone and passes just exactly underneath the magnets from the smart cover. (please if possible each one with the issue verify that you own a smart cover) .. after reading not sure if I was reading @ the correct sites , i have found out - understood that the wires from microphones are protected with a magnetic shield.
So , i think , I had faulty magnetic shield at those cables and with the smart cover the issue came up - p.s. my microphone worked fine for some days .
    2) I did some restores .. at my first restore -set up as new - i opened the camera app to video record and test the mic by talking , I did not hear my voice , but I was not hearing the static noise either. 2nd restore I think the sound is worse than the first time i spotted the issue . 3rd restore is being done at the moment so if there is something new I will post again. - So could it be firmware wise ? If yes, how come it worked for some days ?

  • Only static when recording using the Edirol UA-20 AudioCaptu

I am using QuickTime 7.0.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.2. I can successfully record sound using the Edirol UA-20 USB Audio/Midi Interface with an attached Sony Digital Microphone when I am in GarageBand. I have installed the latest driver for the Edirol UA-20 for Tiger, by the way.
However, after purchasing QuickTime Pro, I tried to record in QuickTime Pro using the Edirol UA-20. The strange thing is that the green sound level bar reacts to the sound levels going into my microphone. But when I press the big red record button in QuickTime, record some sound, and then listen to it, all that I hear is static.
Anyone have success using the Edirol UA-20 and QuickTime? Any ideas? Anyone?

  • Where do deleted Static DNS records go?

Since we enabled the Active Directory recycle bin some time ago, we noticed that there is also a recycle bin for the ForestDNSRecords and DomainDNSRecords container. It appears that dynamic DNS entries are being treated like any other object and getting
moved to CN=Deleted Objects,DC=<Domain|Forest>DNSZones,DC=<YourDomain>,DC=<Suffix>. When Static entries are deleted we do not see them in the Deleted Objects container. Is that a bug, by design, or are we missing something?

Static records should show up along with dynamically created records. I don't believe they would go anywhere else, since they are just DNS nodes in the same context. Maybe there's some other mitigating issue that may be causing it?

Curious, when you deleted the dynamic and static records, did you do that on the same DC in the same AD Site?
Are there any replication errors or issues?
Let's also eliminate any possibilities of the existence of duplicate AD integrated zones. If there are, one DC's *view* or what it *sees* in a partition will be different than another DC's view.

  • Serving static AAAA records with IOS' DNS server

    Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to get IOS to serve statically defined AAAA records? I do this just fine with A records as such :
    On the router :
    ip dns server
    ip host ns.example.com 1.1.1.1
    ip host somehost.example.com 1.1.1.2
    ip dns primary example.org soa ns.example.org [email protected] 21600 900 7776000 86400
    From the Linux box :
    unixhost$ dig @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; (1 server found)
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 32168
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;somehost.example.com.        IN    A
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    somehost.example.com.    10    IN    A   1.1.1.2
    ;; Query time: 1 msec
    ;; SERVER: 1.1.1.1#53(1.1.1.1)
    ;; WHEN: Wed Aug 15 00:42:11 2012
    ;; MSG SIZE  rcvd: 50
Interestingly whenever I add a static ipv6 entry, I get the SOA as  an answer instead of the actual AAAA record. But from the router itself,  it can use the statically defined hosts just fine.
    On the router :
    ipv6 host somehost.example.com 2001:1:1:1::2
    From the Linux box :
    unixhost$ dig -t AAAA @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> -t AAAA @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; (1 server found)
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 53347
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;somehost.example.com.        IN    AAAA
    ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
    somehost.example.com.        86400    IN    SOA  ns.example.com. [email protected]. 3553994542 21600 900 7776000 86400
    ;; Query time: 1 msec
    ;; SERVER: 192.168.200.252#53(192.168.200.252)
    ;; WHEN: Wed Aug 15 00:42:22 2012
    ;; MSG SIZE  rcvd: 108
But from the router, it works just fine :
    router#ping ipv6 somehost.example.com
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2001:1:1:1::2, timeout is 2 seconds:
    Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 0/1/4 ms
    I'm running 15.2(2)T1.
    Thanks,
    Eric Lauriault

    Hello Everyone,
in case someone runs into this thread: In our case it turned out that the problem was related to the DNS Server service. Regardless of the above configuration settings on the NIC and in the registry, the DNS server will always register in DNS using
all of its IPs that the service is listening on. To change this behaviour you can tell the DNS service to only register individual IPS in the registry:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
Add a Reg_Multi_SZ called "PublishAddresses" and specify the list of IPs
In our case we added just one of the three configured IPs and from then on the server only registered this address and not the other ones.

  • Picking up radio freqency and static when recording

Every time I go to record a live instrument I pick up a radio frequency. Might be a grounding problem, might be where I live, etc. Does anyone have any solutions that I could try to get rid of this?

    What kind of live instrument?
I'm guessing here, but it sounds like a guitar with single-coil pickups. Sometimes simply changing position in the room can improve things. In my band's rehearsal space (playing a Strat with single-coil pickups), it makes a huge difference just rotating my body a few degrees.
Anyway, this is just a guess.

  • Static while recording

I am having problems with GB when recording with either USB or a regular mic. It happens at the start of the program or while recording a voice-over. Any ideas?

You'll have to tell us more about your setup.

  • Help!  Suddenly Getting Static Recording Voiceovers

    Hi All,
I just invested in a Presonus Inspire 1394 Firewire Preamp and a Rode NT 1-A microphone for voiceovers, and have been recording voiceover video soundtracks in GB3 for several hours without incident, when suddenly I'm getting heavy static on all newly recorded voiceovers.
I'm totally new to all of this and have a deadline looming . . . can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm not sure what could have suddenly caused this - the quality was excellent and I've tried tightening all connections and rebooting everything.
    Thanks!

Thanks, but yes, the Inspire is still selected under
the MIDI tab as the source.
So you selected the Inspire as the input device in the "Audio Input" section, in the "Audio/MIDI section of your preferences?
(Since you're wanting to record the Mic, an Audio input)

  • Severe static when trying to record electric guitar

I've been trying to record a clean electric guitar and every recording is just covered in heavy hissing static sound. This didn't happen when I recorded an acoustic guitar through a microphone. I have an electric guitar going into a small amp, with the amp level set on the clean channel at a very low setting, then the headphone/output is running directly into my M-Audio FastTrack USB interface, which is connected to the computer. I have adjusted the "recording level" in garage band so that the signal never gets close to the red in the individual instrument track. The "output" knob on the FastTrack is set relatively low also, about "4" out of 10. When I play back the recorded track, the master level meter never goes into the red either. Yet no matter what volume I record at I'm getting this strong crackling/hissing as if it was extremely overdriven.
Related question: When I play on the electric guitar, is it supposed to show an indication in the LCD box, as it does when I'm playing on my midi controller? It doesn't have the little indicator light showing signal, nor does the master level indicator, when I'm recording. Only the individual track level indicator shows the signal coming in. Maybe this is normal...
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK, well I solved my own problem through trial and error. Rant: I switched to GB from ProTools on the theory that GB was supposed to "just work" and I want to be a musician, not an audio engineer. Here is how I fixed the static: one of my garage band books told me I could set the Garage Band audio preferences to "System" default, and then set my computer's audio preferences to my audio interface for the ins and outs, because I wanted to play all of computer's audio, whether in garageband or not, through my reference studio monitors. Well doing it this way results in massive static when recording a real instrument, for no apparent reason. So to fix this, you have to set Garageband's own audio in/out settings to your audio interface, NOT to the system settings. This caused the static in my recordings to completely disappear. Go figure.

  • Static recording macbook issue

    Can anybody help?
I have constant static when recording on logic pro. Here's what i've done so far. Apple also want to charge me 85 pounds to have a look and they cant even guarantee results!
I thought it was my external soundcard (alesis multimix) so i changed this for a motu audio express - it is still happening (even more frustrating that i changed hardware for nothing)
I've swapped all wires and changed USB ports.
Even with no instrument in and if you merely hit record a static will come through. The static is extremely loud and you cant even hear anything being recorded.
I've updated all drivers. There are some notes that it could be a grounding issue?
Does anybody have any advice? It has worked previously in the past, albeit some months ago. And I have not moved any of the hardware around.
    Thanks in advance

1- no the  VM can have any IP addressing, there are completely independent.
If that were true, and I'm not arguing it's false, then what I'm trying to do should work perfectly.
2- when the VM is on dhcp, try to put the same configuration to static and give us the results
I don't know if I understand your request perfectly, but I'll try to answer it.
When the VM is using DHCP, it functions perfectly.
If I simply take the settings provided by DHCP and use them statically, it functions perfectly.
When I take an address/subnet/gateway combination supplied by my ISP, it fails.  I can't ping the gateway, let alone ping the DNS or resolve names or ping anything else.
Note:  I know the address/subnet/gateway combination is good since if I use it on the independent adapter, it works like a charm.
I assumed what you said in #1 above to be true.  However, if it is, and since I know the VM's networking is working (since both DHCP and static work), I'm even more confused why it doesn't work with the actual static IP information that I need to use.
    Brad.
