Helix CPU remains throttled down after redocking

Dear all,
Here is a problem I've just noticed: when I redock the tablet on the keyboard, the CPU will never exceed 30 (occasionally 31%) usage and 0.75 GHz (occasionally 0.78), even under heavy stress (Intel Burn Test at maximum stress level, or CPU-intensive games), and even when temperatures are quite low (65° C) and fan speed far from being maximal (inaudible or just low noise).
I just checked the CPU speed and usage percentage using the Performance tab in the Task manager, so it might be inaccurate, but it is really clear that the CPU is clocked down. See the screenshot below during an Intel Burn test (it's in French, sorry):
Link to picture
I've checked dozens of times: the max CPU speed is set to 100% in the advanced power settings for the power management profile I'm currently using, i.e., High Performance.
If redocking does not revert the CPU to its full capability, then the convertible feature of the Helix is of extremely limited interest. I've realized that because I started to search why my Helix sometimes seemed to show lower performance when executing tasks or running applications, despite free RAM, SSD in good health and with free space, and no processus eating much CPU. In summary, I could feel the différence, and that's how I noticed that it was capped at 30%.
All my drivers and BIOS are up to date. What should I do? Anyone else experiencing this? I'm running the i7 version, quite a disappointment to only benefit 30% of this expensive Helix version...

Use a program like coretemp and after executing the program hit F4 or from the menus select logging. Run some processor intensive applications, either software (AutoCAD, hd video, etc.) or benchmark such as (IBT, Ortho, etc.) then review or post the csv here.
The multiplier is a ratio of the cpu clock rate and front side bus. For instance, with the Helix the fsb is just under/around 100mhz. The clock will either throttle down to 8x and speed up to 32x, resulting in cpu speeds between 800mhz to 3.2Ghz, respectively.

  • P67a-GD65 (B3) 1.19 BIOS weird turbo boost throttling down issue.

    Hi all,
I just upgraded from 1.14 to 1.19 BIOS because of a keyboard detection issue.   For the last few years, I always used Turbo boost OC 4.0-4.3ghz.
Since the new BIOS, when I run Prime95, I notice that at first, the OC works well (goes from 1.6ghz to 4.0ghz) but after a while, it will throttle down to 3.9, revert back to 4.0, then 3.9 and sometimes even 3.8ghz.
CPU Voltage never goes above 1.280v.
While I was using the 1.14 BIOS, it never got below 4.0ghz, so I can't figure out what's new in 1.19 that would make the CPU throttle below the values I set for it.
Note that the CPU temp never goes over 62c, so I don't think it's thermal related.
Overspeed, 2013 and C1E disabled,  all other stuff at defaults.  My core ratios are x40, x41, x42, x43
I also tried 41-44, 42-45, 43-46 ratios, and everytime, it goes up to the minimum ratio (say 43), then after a while, it will always throttle down to 40, 39 and sometimes x38 (rarely but happens everytime though)
    Any ideas?

First, I want to thank you for your help... it is much appreciated!

ll settings being done in the UEFI/BIOS, not the OS right?
Yes, all within the BIOS.  'Change settings in OS is disabled.
When I tried to disable the CPU Phase Control, the PC hung on Windows desktop.  Tried both SVID & the other one but no changes (same throttling)
Correction: ONLY Intel SVID  mode works on my setup -- the other two will hang on Windows Desktop (ASP Mode, Disabled).
I tried the values you provided with no changes either.   :/
I did notice something weird though.
    1) I downloaded 'Intel Extreme Tuning Utility' to see if the CPU was throttling because of thermal issues.
    2) when I tested the CPU stress test (20 minutes), the CPU went and stayed at 4.10Ghz the entire 20 minutes! no throttling at all
    3) I then decided to test the memory stress test, Prime 95, LinX, OCCT and the CPU will throttle down to 3.7 sometimes, but mostly from 4.0 to 3.9ghz on those tests.  What does it mean?  no clue (yet)
Starting to wonder if it's not the CPU Phase Control.  I might reflash 4.3 BIOS to see if it fixes this error (freezing in Windows desktop when disabled), but I'd rather keep this BIOS  for now .
I'll keep looking for the answer (let's not forget, I'm able to get a fixed OC at 4.2 no problem when I disable EIST, C-Phases and set the CPU at x42 & vcore at 1.250v)
Again, thanks much for your patience & help!
P.S.  I've seen another thread about someone having this exact issue, but didn't take notice back then since I didn't know I had this problem.   And now I'm trying to find it, I can't :(  Can't even recall if it was on this site or another one.
Worst case scenario, I make myself a 24/7 OC (even at 4.2 ghz... when not doing anything special, the cores temp are about the same as when at 1.6ghz 0.9xxv)   I'll actually go do that @4.2 & keep it a few days to see how it goes power usage wise/temps/etc.   But if you have any other suggestions, feel free to let me know, takes but a few minutes to revert back to this OC (saved and/or not long to set).
P.P.S. Gotta admit that at full OC  4.2Ghz (no EIST, C1E, etc), I can actually feel the PC being more responsive.  Applications start faster (albeit just slightly, but noticeable), everything just feels more snappy. Starting to wonder if I won't keep it that way.

  • MacBook throttle down from Bad Battery

    Hi. I have a 2006 MacBook 2.0Ghz Core Duo.
Is a nearly dead battery the same as running the computer without a battery at all on AC in regards to CPU throttle down?
From what I have read, if only the AC is used and the battery is removed, the CPU will throttle down to 1 core. That's fine and makes sense to me. However, does the computer do the same thing if the battery is in but barely holding a charge (does OSX throttledown if battery is un/detected?) The battery meter still shows a charge of 100%, and I only get about 10 minutes max on battery power before it abruptly shuts off.
I use the computer for Aperture 3 and am plugged in 95% of the time. However I was just curious if this battery issue does affect the performance the same as no battery at all.
    Thanks!

I have ordered another battery and waiting for it any day now.
My question was more along the lines of how dynamic is the PMU in the MacBook when it comes to the battery. Like is it that black and white between no battery and battery to see the performance decrease? My battery is total fail, and it shows this in the battery meter on 10.6. Because of this, is the PMU throttling down knowing that the battery is fail?
Guess I will find out when the battery comes....

  • Lenovo Helix i7 CPU cpu clock down after Bios 1.14

    Hi all.
I have about 25 Lenovo Helix, and I must admit that I'm a little angry - I have found out that after bios 1.14, then run the only maximum 2.5 GHz, whereas before it ran 3.0GHz - not that I have purchased. It's an easy solution to the heat, just to clock the CPU down.
Is there anyone who can help me, what can I do? Some have bios 1.10 to lie, it works with the real speed. You can easily feel the difference.
    Thank you

  • CPUx: Temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled

My cousin (Windows) computer suicided... it stopped
    booting without any apparent reason.
He asked my help and we stored every important data in an
external drive using an arch linux installed in a usb key
    (thanks to every wiki writer).
I thought it could be an hardware problem so I started
stress with with a command line like:
    stress --cpu 2 --io 1 --vm 1 --hdd 1
(pwd was in a Windows mounted partition)
it is already one hour the program goes. I got the error
    of the title few times:
CPUx: Temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
for both CPUs. I thought it was normal, after all
the cpu might overheat under stress and it slows down
    to protect itself...
But suddenly I got a doubt, it is really the CPU that
slows down itself (so it is an hardware feature) or it is
linux that slows it down (so it is a kernel feature)? In
this second case do anyone knows if Windows do anything
    similar?
Secondly in the error log I can see:
EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 210
    Raw EDID:
    <hex dump omitted>
I sought in the Internet, but I could not understand what
it means nor if it is dangerous... can anyone help me?
    Thanks

The BIOS is usually responsible for setting thresholds and has settings to halt the computer when those thresholds are too high.
Since the program is testing stress, I'm guessing the software is throttling the CPU so the system does not shutoff and the test can still process.
I would highly suggest checking your BIOS's tempertature thresholds, as well as the fan speed settings (BIOS or software).
I would also find out what a normal temperature for the CPU is and do some testing on what different loads do to the temperature.

  • Mail shut down after launch

Even after Recovery installation of OS X, Mail on ly worked one day before Mail again shut down after launch and receiving incoming mails. Any who have a functionally solution to fix this subject.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Lightroom workflow slows down after modifying an image

    Hi fellow users,
Lightroom 4.3 runs smoothly if I work on unmodified images.
However, if I apply modifications on an image, retouching it afterwards becomes much slower, even if I render a preview AFTER I made modifications on the image.
I tell you an example: I import a raw file to the program and I render it`s preview. Then I retouch the image - it works very fast, no waiting time, no Loading overlay.
Where the problem starts: I import a raw file, I apply some modifications on it (for example a preset), then I render it`s preview - then I want to do more modifications on the image, which becomes very slow.
I was monitoring the cpu usage of the computer. In the first case, the cpu usage during modifying the image is normal.
In the second case, it goes up to 100%.
It seems that applying modifications on an image makes working on it slow, no matter if you have the most up-to-date preview or not.
Anyone knows if it is normal or not?
Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks,
    Tamas
    My configuration:
Windows 7 64 bit (up to date)
    Lightroom 4.3 64 bit
    Fast PC
    lightroom settings:
    camera raw cache: 20gb
    video cache: 10gb

First of all, you can forget about the preview rendering, that's irrelevant. Previews are only used by the Library module, not the Develop module. In Develop, it's handled by the ACR cache.
Now, as for slowing down after initial adjustments, that's a variable I haven't looked out for. But it could well be correct (it would explain some weird results I got across two machines recently).
In general, Lightroom 4 performs well below expected standards on some systems, while others fly along, and it seems nobody can explain why. Long story, do a search on this forum and you'll come up with several lengthy threads. The problem is that there are so many variables in this that it's almost impossible to even define what "slow" means. And now you've added another (interesting) one...

  • My battery lifetime at my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 is down after 1 hour!

Mac Book Pro Mid 2009, running with Mountain Lion is down after 1 hour! I already replaced it with a new one, but same problem. There is also a warning to control the battery. SMC and PRAM reset done. Nothing helps. From time to time, the remaining time jumps from almost clear (20%) up tu 80%! And the process to calculate this time needs much time. Can anybody help me? Cheers

I don't recommend you to restore a Time Machine backup because the same problem will appear if there's a software issue. First, install Mountain Lion without restoring the backup and check that the battery works correctly

  • Windows 8.1 gradually slows down after hours. Speed returns normal if restart "explorer.exe".

I have Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) installed on Alienware M17x. The slowdown mostly appears as slow response in the situation such as open a folder/window, open/close/switch tabs in IE, drag window, and there's also cursor lag. It gradually
slows down after system boot, noticeable after 3-4 hours, really slow after 8-9 hours.
I have thought about many possible processes which can cause this issue, and then I found out that it's caused by "explorer.exe". If I kill "explorer.exe", the speed suddenly becomes normal. Then, I restart explorer.exe
again, it stays normal, and then it still gradually slows down again after hours.
I have checked driver or software compatibility. Also, CPU usage and Disk usage is normal.
Please give some advises, reasoning, or solutions.

    SaccoSVD
The process that is causing the problem is called sidebar.exe and I am curious why it is running on a win 8 machine as I dont believe it is built in. (It seems to have over 22,000 instances launched so I suspect either malware or a broken app)
It is usually associated with a Vista machine, or updated win 7 machine.  Did you do do a clean install?  Have you run a malwarebytes scan?
Please download the free version of Malwarebytes.
    Update it immediately.
    Do a full system scan
Let us know the results at the end.

  • Quicksilver shuts down after startup chime

    Hello,
I got an old Quicksilver 2002 (933) which won't boot : it shuts down 3 or 4 seconds after the startup chime. What's wrong ?
    Thanks

Thank you for your answer, but it didn't work.
I forgot something important in my first post : the story of this Quicksilver
So yes, I just acquire this Mac, didn't work at all. It was missing a screw on the CPU card. After adding the screw, the PM booted into my Tiger DVD. I shut down the PM to close it correctly. It didn't boot anymore for this time.
I tried PRAM reset, motherboard reset. I've taken apart all I could (modem, graphic card, hard drive, ...), I've replaced the PSU, but nothing. I noticed that when I try to boot without RAM, the powermac makes one beep (no RAM installed) but don't shut down after that ! So I tried with 2 different RAM modules on every RAM slot, but it didn't work. (each RAM module is PC133 and works fine on my iMac G3 DV SE).
I think the motherboard or the CPU is screw up, but which one ? Maybe I forgot one thing to make it work ?
    Cheers, Aurélien

  • Mac mini shuts down after 10 seconds..

At first today, the CDs and discs kept automatically ejecting and wouldn't read (obviously). So I keep putting them back in hoping it would read or hold something. Then I restarted and the Mac Mini shuts down after 10 seconds of the seeing the desktop. Did I fry it? I did hear a weird sizzling when I put my hand on top of the mini. And is this under any warranty - I bought it Feb. 07? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Any thoughts on that?
One or two come to mind, not least that if the unit is under warranty now (as it clearly is) and they aren't taking this fault seriously, then buying AppleCare so it remains under warranty longer isn't the right solution - having them examine it and resolve the problem is.
There's no doubt at all that in the event there is a system with a suspected fault, extending the warranty long enough that the system ceases to function and can be repaired is a good thing, but it shouldn't be necessary to go to that extreme in order to get a problem resolved now!
I would simply take this elsewhere and have it looked at. While odd noises are sometimes hard to hear in an environment where there are people and other activities going on, and thus it is reasonable to expect diagnosis of them to prove difficult, a system that shuts down of its own accord after a few seconds is clearly not working correctly. To be sure, if it is overheating, then testing it when it's cold is likely to miss the problem, but the description of the fault from the user ought to give enough clues to put the system on test long enough to see what happens when it warms up. If the fault can't then be replicated with a system that is at normal running temperature and under load, then giving it a clean bill of health is reasonable.
Thus, in your place I would ask them if they did, in fact, test it in that way. Alternatively, write a description of the fault, specifically identifying the premature shutdowns and the circumstances in which they happen (if they still do) and the noises and the circumstances in which they occur (if they still do) and take the system and description to an approved service provider and let them look at it.
If the shutdowns are no longer occurring, and the noise is absent, then whether you buy AppleCare or not is really a matter of how confident you are that the problem has gone. If you have doubts that the system is running correctly, AppleCare is expensive but at least extends the warranty sufficiently that you can stop worrying too much. Alternatively, if the problem(s) still persist, rather than AppleCare, have the system examined and repaired right now.

  • Re: Satellite A105 shuts down after 60 seconds (NOT a thermal problem)

Satellite A105-s4344 shuts down after EXACTLY 60 seconds. The mobo has been removed from bezels and all un-needed devices removed (DVD, HDD, WiFI etc.). Swapped CPU and RAM with known good ones. Swapped AC adapter and battery with known good. Does the same on AC or DC only inputs.
I have not yet flashed the BIOS (with 60 seconds this would be foolish). But, I am looking into replacing or reflashing with an EEPROM burner. Currently has V 2.0
I am not sure what genration heat detecting this system uses, but it is a possible cause if it is one of the later generations (visit http://www.topbits.com/how-to-monitor-cpu-temperature.html if you do not know that I am refering to).
Prior to reballing the north and south bridge, and flashing I figured I would get some input from you folks. Just to cover all bases ;)
P.S. the first person to ask what OS I am using will get an instant ticket to the bottom of my respect list.

    >P.S. the first person to ask what OS I am using will get an instant ticket to the bottom of my respect list.
:) :) :) Best thing I saw in this forum.
    Back to your problem.
I am not technician but here just my opinion about all this. The fact is that after switching your notebook ON CPU in just few seconds reaches very high temperature. You can switch your notebook ON and just enter BIOS settings and the same should happen again.
I cannot say for sure if this is 100% thermal issue or not but what else can be responsible for switching off? CPU will be hot in few seconds only. Material change structure with temperature change and I can just imagine some contact will be interrupted.
On this forum we had many similar reports like when cold notebook starts and runs well but after short time switches off for no reason. Maybe I am wrong but for me it sounds like thermal or bad contacts issue. Lets see what other people have to say about it.
