Hello, I am trying to upgrade to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error. Resizing the partition does not work, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my macbook pro to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error.
Resizing the partition does not work for me and I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot and the disk manager is lost.
Anyway to tell the yosemite installer that it should not pay attention whether the disk is bootable or not ?
If I am doomed, any way to delete the installer and downloaded OS from my hard drive ?
Thanks for your help

As usual, the Linux installer wrecked the partition table. You would have to boot from your OS X installation disc and repartition. Doing so will of course remove all data from the drive, so you must back up first if you haven't already done so.

    AishaniKumar,
which model MacBook Pro do you have? If you click on the Apple menu, hold down the Option key, and then click on “System Information…”, a new window will appear. Which Model Identifier is shown in the Hardware Overview of that window?

  • Mountain Lion will not install on MBP (late 2011) Macintosh HD: "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer"

Tried to upgrade from 10.7.4 on relatively new MBP. It appears that Mountain Lion successfully downloaded from App Store. However, ML will not install to the hard drive because "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer". Thanks for advice.

  • This disk cannot be used to startup this computer message when I try to install mavericks.  Cant partition my SSD (which is verified) either - help!

    Hi all
I am using Snow Leopard and have just downloaded Mavericks.  I have a 250 gig SSD with no partitions.  When trying to install I get a message saying 'this disk cannot be used to startup this computer" and disk utility has checked my drive and its fine, but I cant partition it either saying 'the partition cannot be resized Try reducing the amount of change in the size of the partition".  I have tried various sizes but nothing works.  Please help!

Well, I'm puzzled by the fact that you have your 750 GB disk highlighted, yet on the right it is showing disk0s2 as having 750 GB with nothing on it although your Macintosh HD appears to be part of that disk0s2. I have no idea what disk0s1, 5, and 6 are or what they contain, but the only thing accessible seems to be your Macintosh HD - does that contain your OS? For comparison, here is a screenshot of mine (2 partitions on my internal hard drive):
The area shaded in blue is the space my OS/apps/etc. occupies.
Unless there is a viable explanation of your disk(s), my suggestion would be to boot into recovery, erase your drive, partition properly, and then reinstall from scratch. Make sure you have a backup first.

  • Why do I get the message "This disk cannot be used to start your computer" w/ upgrade to Mountain Lion from 10.6.8

I have a MacBok pro later than 2007.  running 10.6.8 .  Downloaded Mountain Lion from app store.  When  I get to the install page I get the message "This disk cannot be used to start your computer."  What is the problem and what can be done?
    Thanks,

I appreciate the prompt reply.  I saw that on the support community and it isn't giving me a solution.
The disk where the volume I need to upgrade is 250.06 GB Hitachi, the partition window (current) does not have a blue marker for the used data space, so there is no way to resize it.

  • My computer will not recognize my iPod Nano when i connect it. I tried my laptop instead but it said the same thing - one of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. Can i fix this?

My 16 gig iPod Nano 7th gen was put of power. I connected it to the computer and it started to turn on (the apple appeared in the middle of the screen). Then left it two minutes and the computer went into sleep mode. My iPod nano had gone off and now it will not turn on, or connect to the computer, so i cannot charge it. I am not sure if it is a problem with the usb cable. When I conntct the cable to the computer nothing happens, but then when i connect the iPod to the cable it says 'one of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it'. Please don't say its broken already

It probably needs to be reset. The procedure is different for different Nano models: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano/assistant/itunes/

  • Mediakit reports no such partition

I have Leopard and Ubuntu installed side by side on my MacBook. I am running out of space on Leopard and wanted to free up some space.
So I loaded the Live version of Ubuntu and made the native Ubuntu partition smaller.
I then restarted and loaded the Disk Utility from the Leopard installation CD and tried to make my Leopard partition larger, however after I click 'Apply', a message comes up saying: Mediakit reports no such partition.
Anyone know what the issue could be? Why can I not add the free space to the Leopard partition?
    Thank you!

It is possible that Ubuntu is holding onto the partition, or it is formatted in a way that won't let Disk Utility handle it. Try looking on some Ubuntu forums as there are probably not that many people here with any experience with Ubuntu.

  • Disk Utility: MediaKit reports no such partition

What is up with my disk?
On my brand new mac mini, I played around with resizing partitions in Disk Utility, it worked fine, and I eventually returned it to the original single-partition state.
Then, I ran boot camp, and told it to create a 10 GB partition.
Then, I installed Linux (64-bit Ubuntu) -- from the Linux installer I deleted the windows partition, and a zero-size partition before it, and put Linux swap and ext3 partitions in that space.
Now, from the mac side, if I try to shrink the boot partition again, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition".
Help? One potentially related anomaly is that Disk Utility shows my Linux ext3 partition format as "MS-DOS (FAT)" but the "fdisk" command correctly lists it as "Linux files*"
Another disturbing thing is that if I type "sudo pdisk" on the Macintosh command line, and give the 'L' command to list partitions on all disks, pdisk exits with the error "Floating point exception"

It doesn't sound like you've actually tried reformatting the entire drive, just resizing partitions. There is absolutely no reason why mountability should enter into the picture at all since you can't format a drive if any volumes are mounted.

I received no error message. The application was just trying to find applications unsuccessfully.
I am using MAC OS 10.10.1
I tried to uninstall the application  but it seems that a kind of deamon is still installed thus providing me to reinstall properly. Do you know where are the elements to remove in order to get my machine just like before ?
Otherwise I would have to reinstall everything and this would be a pain.
    Thanks for your help.

  • "The disk cannot be used because it is not recognized"

I have a MacPro (Sept. 2008 model) and now I tried to burn a CD, when I insert the CD-R it will recognize the CD insertion and ask me if I want to mount it with finder, I click yes and then it gives me this error and it doesn't mount:
*"The disk cannot be used because it is not recognized"*
I also tried a DVD+R and it gives me the same error, but when I insert a CD or DVD that is not a recordable media it mounts perfectly. Anyone knows how to correct this?
I inserted the same CD-R in my Aluminum MacBook (late 2008) and it worked perfectly, I was able to burn it without a problem.

This gets more strange by the moment. Toast will see AND burn the blank DVD/CDs when inserted, at least when using the PowerMac's internal Pioneer burner. (I haven't tried it on the external TDK burner.) I changed DVD/CD System Preferences from "Show in Finder" to "Launch Toast Titanium" and had no problems. The application launched on DVD insert and did the data burn flawlessly, though a bit slower than I remember it being on Tiger.
But there is still this inconsistency between the PowerMac and the MacBook Pro. On the former, Leopard simply refuses to recognize any media placed in the internal burner, but on the MacBook Pro insertion of a DVD/CD functions just like Tiger used to - mounts the untitled media on the desktop, allows drag and drop file adds, and allows burning by OSX finder or menu. Has to be some strange bug in Leopard code for a PowerMac G5.

  • Since upgrade to v29, pinned tabs don't appear and sometimes all tabs don't appear and open menu button does not work

My pinned tabs don't appear at any start and at some starts, I don't see the bookmarks toolbar (I can restore that by removing it from view-toolbars and then reselecting it). when this happens, FF also does not show any tabs and the Menu button does not work.
I have tried various suggestions found on here like deleting the sessionstore.js and re-installing FF, also tried disabling hardware acceleration in safe mode and still have the same problems.
Am reluctant to reset FF in case I lose my favourites and Bookmarks, is there anything else I can try?

Firefox may not have closed properly.<br />
You can try to update to Firefox 29.0.1 to be released tomorrow (Friday) to see if that helps with this issue.

  • Has anyone been able to contact Adobe to learn why their Flash Player does not work on Mac OS 10.6.8, no matter how many updates you install?  This seems like a big error by Adobe.

I have thee Mac computers with Mac OS 10.6.8, one of which is a Mac Pro.  No matter how many updates I install from Adobe, their Flash Player does not work on any of these 3 computers.  I don't know how to contact Adobe Systems about this problem, but I think it is their responsibility to make sure that their so-called "universal" software works proplerly on a relatively recent operating system like OS 10.6.8 that is still in widespread use.  When you install the updates, nothing happens -- not even an error message.  What is the point of a universal player that is not universal?  It works fine on my MacBook Pro with OS 9 Mavericks, but it does not work at all -- indeed, has never worked -- on my 3 Macs with OS 10.6.8.  Has anyone contacted Adobe Systems to find out why the Flash Player does not work with OS 10.6.8 and what they plan to do about it?

Where are you getting Flash from?
Get the appropriate dmg installer here and then run it.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
If it still won't install, do these two things: First uninstall any Flash by going into the second level Hard Drive Library>Internet Plug-ins, and trash the Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt. Then boot into Safe Boot, Shift at the startup chime (give it much longer than a usual boot) and run the installer while booted in Safe Boot.

What error message if any did you get? It could be a couple things:
    1. Did you include the Report Toolkit's dynamic vis in the app's build process?
Ref: Error 7 when Running an .EXE Using VIs from Report Generation Toolkit for MS Office
    2. How are you giving the path to you custom template, as a relative or an absolute path? The path will be different for the .exe. You have to strip twice.
