Hello, I currently own a Power Mac G5 buily in early 2005. I need HELP!

Hello, I currently own a Power Mac G5 buily in early 2005. I can not install and run the new software that is for the Intel Mac's. I believe the early Mac Pro G5 Desktops did not have the intel CPU processors. Can anybody tell me if there a way around this problem? I wish I could run all the newer software currently available. Please only respond if you have knowledge of this.

Kappy's reply is 100% on target, of course, and you are right about needing the Intel chip.
Just to clarify, though, there is no such thing as a "Mac Pro G5 Desktop".  If it is a G5, it is NOT a "Mac Pro", but a Power Mac G5.  If it were a Mac Pro, it would have an Intel CPU and it would not be a G5.

I have several software titles I have purchased and they are on dual layer dvd, I am using Philips DVD-R dual layer, I have a Power Mac G5 and an early 2008 Mac Book Pro, I have been unable to successfully burn a back-up on either drive. • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉

    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

  • Hello ~ I bought a G4 Hello ~ I bought a G4 Power Mac & had used it with a standard monitor. Somebody gave me a M8536 23" Cinema Display. I think they should be compatible. My G4 seems to be missing what I think is called an ADC connection.

Should I just buy a video card with an ADC connection?

    Hi Mark,
I didn't check your link on your original post. Sorry.
There is one other model that is a 400 MHz model that will accept cards with an ADC connection port.
    That's the Gigabit Ethernet model.
You do not have this model Mac.
The table in the link we both have show you what video connections the and locations for those on the back panel.
Clearly, your PowerMac doesn't have an ADC connector for the card that is already installed.
So, you can conclude that you have the AGP sawtooth model that only uses VGA or DVI connection.
You can give me your PowerMac's model number to be sure.
It's located on the back panel somewhere near all of the connections.
That'll clinch, for sure, which model you do have.
You will have to purchase an ADC to DVI adapter when you decide which card to update to per JapanMac's suggestion.
The adapter doesn't affect video performance.
Just allows for a connection change at the computer.
This is about as straightforward as this gets.
The absence of an ADC connection port means you have a Mac with a VGA and/or DVI connection instead.
An adapter will be needed to use the 23 inch monitor you have with the card you have installed now or any future video card upgrade.

  • Cod 4 on my mac..... I need help?????

Hey o want to play call of duty 4 on my macbook air.
But can i play COD 4 without lag? My system is : intel core 5
                                                                                  11 inc, 1.6 Ghz, intel hd 3000
    Can i play without lag?
And what is the best high graphic game can play on my mac?

I present, for your viewing pleasure, more details regarding my system.
The computer has all updates applied, currently running 10.3.9. The problem is global, i.e. I'm experiencing this problem on all my accounts, including newly created accounts. The JavaScript problem occurs on ALL websites that use JavaScript to link to other pages. I've run the /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, it said it repaired a few minor issues, but ofcourse did not repair my problem.
I've given up on finding the software that is modifying my system, I think it's time to do a clean install. All my user documents should be fine, right?
The great news is... I bought myself a new MacBook Pro, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, SuperDrive, etc, etc.
The iBook G4 is now officially sole property of my wife. Which doesn't say much, since she claimed it as her own a long time ago. =)
I say it's time for me to close this thread and admit defeat.
If only there were some log of all the files that launch at startup...
    Thanks for all your help,

  • My Mac Pro is dieing.. I need help!

I have a lot of symptoms and not sure what the problem is.
1st thing I notice is TONS of beach balls on simple tasks. Using Mail, sometimes beachballs while typing, even if it's the only program open. Opening small programs takes 10 times as long. Some programs just randomly beach ball for 10 seconds-ish then come back from being unresponsive.
Then a few days ago, my computer would boot up but it was so slow, it took two minutes for finder to open. The dock would not load. Two minutes until after clicking the apple in the top left, that a menu would come down. So I reinstalled the OS and it's running better again.
I still have the random beach ball issue. I looked in my Activity monitor, I notice about 8 - 10 process that list Virtual Memory as 16,777,216.00 TB. (mdworker, fontd, UserEventAgent, ServerScanner, iTunesHelper, AppleSpell.service, pboard, CCacheServer) Real memory listed seems normal.
My mac is 1st gen I think. 16gb of ram 8x 3.0ghz Ati X1900 4x750GB seagates OSX 10.6.4 The problem started in 10.6.3, and persists still after I updated to 10.6.4, so it wasn't caused by the update.
Also notice the only programs with the 16 million terrabyte Virtual memory capacity are 64bit.
    Any ideas

Apparently I can't spell lol. Yes dying.
Safari froze up and I had my activity monitor sorted by CPU usage, and nothing was above 0.1. It was froze for a good bit, I was also doing a 'verify disk' at the time. Then the computer locked up.. Non-responsive to any commands, so I clicked the power button (just to try sleep). It did nothing.. then 10 seconds later, came alive, and slept. Then I waited. clicked spacebar and it woke up but the videocard must have crashed because the fan went into turbo mode. ( I assume it can't read the temp, so it defaults to 100% fan to be safe). I noticed it passed the verify disk thing in the disk utility before shutting it down to make the noise of the video card go away...
I think cloning the HD is a good idea. I'm going to try that. Although, I don't exactly thing the HD is the problem. I did a full reinstall of the OS over the old one, not on a reformat. Reformatting.. is a last ditch effort.. I really don't want to set EVERYTHING back up again.. that would blow. I mean, that's why I'm on a mac and not a **** PC.
Seagates are just installed normally. I do computer animation so they are just holding frames, artwork, Time Machine, and stuff.
Video card has no visible dust on it.
Ram is just warm to the touch, not hot.

  • My first Mac and first experience with iPhoto.  Need help

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Mac, a Mini, last week and I'm trying to learn how iPhoto works. I've been able to import picturs from my NAS (network attached storage) drive which holds all our photos, music and videos.
However, when I took pictures over the weekend, I wanted to put them on the NAS as well and have them automatically import into iPhoto. I like that iPhoto lets you put a description about the pictures, but I can't find a way to type a description and then set iPhoto to save the pictures to my NAS drive.
I ended up just saving them to the NAS drive and then importing again and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates. The problem with that is I get folders called thumbnails and then I get messages telling me the Thumbs.db files are not readable and those are coming from my camera card or the NAS drive, maybe because it was formatted on a PC. I know Thumbs is a PC item.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do this and if so, how do I do that? And how do I enter descriptions about my old photos to make them easier to find during a search?
Thanks for the help. While the Mac is very similar to my old PC, there sure are a lot of things I'm unfamiliar with. But with time and some help from experts like you, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with it.
    John

    John
iPhoto is a photo organiser - that is a database. Like any database the data has to be imported into the application.
What format is that NAS? iPhoto does not sit happily on disks that are not formatted for Mac OS X (journalled). You will find issues with saving changes to the db and with sharing pics among other apps.
You can put a library on an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do t
No. For a start, filenames have no relevance in iPhoto - it's all about visual organisation. You can attach titles, keywords and comments to pics, of course, and can add them to the File on export.
If you want to set the pics in a spot, then do that with the Finder and thereafter import them. You can use a batch file renamer such as FileList to rename the files prior to import.
and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates.
Using a Referenced rather than a Managed library means that iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
As a general comment: iPhoto is a bit different from most photo apps. It's happiest when it manages the files and lets you go on to manage your Photos. That's a key distinction though, between Files and Pictures. iPhoto is about Pictures, not Files.
You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - there is never a need to go into the Photo Library on the Hard Disk. To find and access photos:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To use an external editor
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
By all means post again if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD

  • Mac Mini Overheating - probably my fault, still need help though.

    Hi all,
Well first off my Mac Mini is out of warranty, so one day I decided to crack it open and take a look around.
I removed the heatsink and the dodgy heatsink clips apple uses (2 of which broke while removing them) and was forced to buy some plastic screws to hold the heatsink on.
Ever since doing this my mini has been experiencing problems with heat.
Its a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo (1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) 80GB Hard Drive.
It already has the latest SMC firmware.
I have tried the SMC reset procedure, while the procedure did work the problems persist.
First question, what should be the idle temperature of this machine? it is idling at 60* Celsius or 140* Fahrenheit and 1500 RPM fan speed, the problem is even at 70 - 80*C or 167* Fahrenheit (full load) the fan only increases to 2300 RPM which is insufficient to cool the machine, resulting in a kernel panic and possibly triggering the Intel CPU's thermal protection circuit.
I have checked the CPU numerous times and tried various thermal paste quantities but this problem persists. I have also checked the fan connector which is definitely connected correctly, in fact all connectors are connected correctly I am sure of it and the reason I am sure is all the software is reporting the correct numbers for temps voltages currents etc.
Does anyone have any idea what i've done wrong apart from ever looking inside this thing in the first place? I really want to save it because it works fine apart from this issue.
PS. The only way to do any work is to do an SMC reset (during which the fan runs at full speed), while the fan is forced in full speed the thing works great but as soon as its back to normal the fan fails to adjust adequately).

It sounds like your method of attaching the heatsink is not as good at removing heat from the CPU as Apple's was.
I'd suggest getting one of the fan control programs and setting the minimum fan speed at 2500 RPM or more.
Another issue is whether or not you correctly replaced the T-shaped foam air-diverter on top of the hard drive.
Also be sure the Mini has free access to room temperature air, and is not sitting on or near other heat-producing equipment.

I am a new Mac user and until recently had a successful wireless connection to the Brother printer/fax. Address # 192.168.1.100 While printing a job I ran out of ink. I turned the printer off to replace the cartridge and lost the connection to the wireless powerbook. The printer works because it prints jobs from the PC that it is connected to by wire. So far I have clicked on "system preferences", clicked print and fax, Clicked + ato add printer and put the address in. Nothing is working. The message says, cannot connect to printer. I need serious, detailed help. My husband connects everything and gets it running and he just left for Iraq! Thanks so much!!

Hello! In the printer setup utility choose "show Jobs" and see if you can click on "start jobs". It's probably gotten stuck because it ran out of ink. Tom
