Hello I'm having a no dns server problem on my time capsule

Hello I'm having this same problem:

Hi everyone,
I just bought a new AirPort Express and Comcast is my ISP. I ditched my old Belkin wireless router, connected the Comcast modem directly to my AirPort Express, and it appears to be working great. I can access the internet wirelessly and also play music using AirPlay through my stereo speakers.
However, when I open the AirPort Utility, the utility tells me that I have two problems with my AirPort Express:
Apparently I have no internet connection (the utility tells me that "Your AirPort base station does not have a valid IP address."), even though I can access the internet just fine.
I don't appear to have any DNS server addresses (the utility tells me that "This AirPort base station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet.")
Does anyone know if these are serious problems that I need to address, or can they be ignored? I don't want to start tinkering with the AirPort Express's settings until I am better informed, because right now everything is working as far as my access to the internet is concerned.
and I tried to :

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
BUT NOTHING IT STILL SHOWS NO INTERNET CONNECTON  on my capsule and NO DNS SERVER ...
I have tried to HARD RESET it resets ( with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN) and it connects to internet, it also says setuo complete in airport utility but once I go back into Airport utily cause Time capsule is still flashing amber it says NO INTERNET CONNECTION and NO DNS SERVER ...
anyone has any suggestions PLEASE and Thank you

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

  • DNS Server problem with AX

my network only consists of the AX, my macbook, and my PC (which is rarely used anymore). At least once a week, sometimes more often, my AX reports a DNS server problem. I've plugged it in to the ethernet and the settings are they same and there is no other router involved. The AX is connected directly from the cable modem. I confirmed with my ISP that the DNS server numbers are correct and they show up in the proper fields as well. What may cause this and how can I fix it?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Since the Express can only use the information that it receives from the ISP,
you might want to try the Open DNS settings to see if that will help. Just be sure to make note of your current settings in case you need to revert to them.

  • DNS Server problems with ASA 5505

    Hi guys,
we setup a new ASA 5505 which is mainly used as our VPN gateway. The ASA is configured and controlled by our ISP (and this is where the problem starts )) and they somehow cannot manage to get the VPN settings really working.
    So, here is our problem.
our machines(Windows 7) are configured to get the network settings through DHCP (Windows 2012 Server).
Before I connect with AnyConnect to our VPN gateway, the DNS Server setting in the network settings for the adapters(IPv4) are set to 'dynamic'
When I now connect, this setting is changes to a statc entry (which is our DNS server).
When disconnecting, it is not reverted back, which means I have to do this always manually.
What I do not understand is the fact, that the DNS server is set for all the adapters, shouldtn't it be only set to the anyconnect adapter?.
The interesting thing is, that when I connect to a different ASA, this does not happen. The ISP is now saying, that the machines are configured exactly the same and that they cannot reproduce, but I can't believe this.
This issue shows up at every machine which connects to our vpn, so it is not only a single machine which might be misconfigured.
Do you have any idea what might cause this issue?
btw, the second ASA (which works) is from our partner company, so we cannot simply copy the config
    THanks in advance
    Patrick

Nice to see someone from BT has addressed your issue
I have this exact same problem, seems completely bizarre, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the original home hub (i have the latest one now). Can you confirm whether the problem does affect anyone with a bt home hub and not just the one that the dyndns is pointing at? I'll try and confirm by hitting your domain from my home connection.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As your ISP is an DSL provider, Most of the DSL Modem has a DHCP on them, so they acts like an Router. So right now you connection type is NAT behind NAT.
To make your Linksys Router work with an DSL Modem. Login to the Linksys Router setup page and below the setup tab you need to change the "Local IP Address" to 192.168.2.1 and click on Save Settings...
Once the settings are saved, unplug the power from Router and Modem, wait for 30sec and then plug the power to the Modem and once all the lights are lid then you can plug the power to the Router and check if you are Online.

  • What DNS settings to use in server setup with a time capsule

I have a mac mini and am to install leopard server on it for our office.
i think the standard install is for me...small business needing filesharing and vpn access only. We have outsourced exchange which i'm probably going to keep, and also an outsourced web server.
I had a trial run at install and came across some problems (clients couldn't use vpn or ichat) so thought I better check my assumptions with you experts!
i presume DHCP will be run by the time capsule, and 5 or 6 macbooks will share the broadband connection. Got to the 'Network address pane' and it had an IP and subnet assigned by the time capsule (10.0.2.2, 255.255.255.0).
I clicked next and got the 'network names' pane...maybe this is where i went wrong...I set primary DNS name as macserver.[mycompany].com and the computer name as Mac Server.
I went through the rest of the set up...added some users and file sharing is all work fine. Client machines auto set up via directory utility
    PROBLEMS:
iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
    VPN says internet connection problem
i can access internet from clients and server machine; can file share no problem.
There is something obvious that I am missing...

iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
It would help if you quoted the actual error message, rather than some vague reference.
The chances are it's complaining about the SSL certificate that the server is using - it probably doesn't match the server name. There are many reasons for this, but the upshot is that you need an SSL certificate that is valid for the hostname that users use to connect to the server with.
So if you're using 'ichat.mycompany.com' as your iChat server name, you will need a SSL certificate for 'ichat.mycompany.com'. Or you'll need to turn off SSL.
You can manage SSL certificates via Server Admin.
    VPN says internet connection problem
I assume this is remote clients trying to connect to the server, right?
Have you setup all the port forwarding rules in the router to allow incoming VPN connections to get routed to the server?

  • DNS Server Problem

    Hi,
I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 Enterprise on Virtual Box both are 64bit versions.
I setup the AD DS and the DNS Server role on the server and set the server IP addresses as follow:
    IP: 10.0.2.16
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
    DNS: 127.0.0.1 (to itself)
On the Win7 machine I let the IP addresses be obtained automatically and set the DNS server IP manually as 10.0.2.16 (the IP of the server machine). IP addresses from the Win7 machine:
    IP: 10.0.2.15
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
    DHCP Server: 10.0.2.2
    DNS: 10.0.2.16
But I still can't ping to the server. It says "request timed out" once and then "reply from 10.0.2.15: destination host unreachable"
I'm trying to join the Win7 machine to the domain on the server. But I get the error "the domain could not be contacted" every time. The details of the error is that the DNS server are not responding.
My guess: there is some problem with the DNS server setup but I don't know exactly what it is and how to resolve it.
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks a lot!
I changed both machines to bridged mode.
I can now ping the DNS server from the Win7 machine. That was just stupid from me, got me stuck for 2 days...

  • Making Snow Leopard Server services accessible through Time Capsule

Sorry, this will be a fairly long explanation. I think this is the right forum but the question kind of spans several component elements.
During the setup of Snow Leopard Server I let it configure the Time Capsule for services that it is providing, which I want to make available to both the local network and to computers coming in from the Internet. However, there seem to be some conflicts between Time Capsule ports and Snow Leopard ones.
First my set-up: I have Verizon FIOS and have set up my Actiontech Router into bridge mode to the Time Capsule so that the Time Capsule grabs the public IP address. The Snow Leopard Server has a dedicated private IP from the Time Capsule through the DHCP reservation. I have a dynamic DNS setup which consistently points to the public IP address assigned to the Time Capsule. After starting services on Snow Leopard Server, I can see the port mappings created on the Time Capsule by the server allocated to the server's dedicated private IP address. However, the File Sharing (AFP, SMB) entry can't be enabled because the ports used for those services conflict with the ports opened by the Time Capsule to enable backups from client Time Machines (TCP Ports 548, 139). Therefore, any external access to those ports are going to the Time Capsule and not routed to the Snow Leopard Server.
    Two questions:
    1. Should I map the DNS hostname to the Time Capsule on the Hostnames screen on AirPort utility? While this will enable remote access to the Time Capsule (so that if my client computers are outside coming from the Internet), will this mess up remote access to the Snow Leopard Server?
    2. How do I get around the problem of the port conflicts between what Time Machine needs to get to the Time Capsule for backups versus enabling the ports for AFP and SMB on the server?

I actually found an Apple support tip and am posting it here to answer the question:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2963
Bottom line: you can't have both devices doing file sharing unless you set up VPN access.

  • Can I set up an FTP server from a networked Time Capsule?

I've been looking around and can't seem to find this specific question addressed anywhere, so I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this.
I have a Time Capsule connected directly to my router. Other than its intended purpose, I would like to connect an external USB hard drive to it, and use that as an accessible FTP server for a select few.
To my understanding, port forwarding the router and giving WAN access would allow any user to see the entirety of the Time Capsule - which I do not want. I only want to share this one drive and have it maintained by an FTP login/password. I would then share this drive on the internal network.
Is this possible? Or will I have to run the FTP server off one of my workstations?
    Cheers.

Not in usable and reliable way no.. many things are possible.. if you have the (various bad words for foolishness or courage)... but it is too hard as there is no hacked firmware out there for a TC. It is a device intended for TM backups of laptops by wireless. Anything else is restricted strictly to what Apple want you to use it for. You can buy a cheap NAS, single disk unit will almost inevitably have FTP in them.. over network FTP is ok but remember it is not secure so you want SFTP for internet access.. And be warned.. FTP itself will be blocked from WAN on the TC.
There are severe FTP issues with the AE/TC.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

The last post in this thread by.. SBeattie2
I think will condemn you to replacement of the TC by a router that actually conforms to standards if you are trying to forward it to a workstation or NAS even.
SFTP might work.. see this thread.

  • Automated backups of OSX Server 10.5 with Time Capsule (TC)

I am running OSX 10.5 Server on a G5. The server is working well. I have the server plugged into a TC. I would like to do automated backups from the server to the TC.
I can read and write to the TC disk fine from the server.
When I try to configure Time Machine to do automated backups of the server to the TC it does not work. I set the preferences in TM. It seems to accept them. But the configuration never gets saved, and so TM always complains "Time Machine Error - No backup volume has been selected. To select a backup volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
This is of course is what I have just done, but the changes are not getting saved.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I only have 16gb of my 120gb? hard drive left to use. Will the Time Capsule "mirror" my hard drive or can I "move" some of my large files (iTunes and iPhoto) over to the TC to free up space on my G4's hard drive?
If you use Time Capsule with Time Machine, almost all of your computer's disk drive contents (except what you exclude) will be backed up to the Time Capsule disk. If you don't use Time Machine, you can put whatever you want to on the Time Capsule disk.
You can also attach an external USB drive to your Time Capsule and move anything you want to that.
I also have an Apple TV. Will this be a problem being connected too?
    No.
I am a little confused as to how to do this. My G4 is getting pretty sluggish, and I want to clean it up some. What program can use to help get rid of the old programs I have that are not using and trash them? Do I just drag them to the trash?
For the most part, dragging programs to the trash will eliminate all but "preference" files. To locate those, look in <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences.

    I juts bought a new rg54gs Gateway..
It works fine, except the print server.. When i plug in the usb cable and turn the printer on, the gateway starts to reboot over and over and over until i turn the printer off.. All the lights blink on and off as well.
    Is my rg54gs defective?
    Has anyone had similar problems?

  • I am having problems reestablishing my Time Capsule.  I had to get a new internet modem and that seemed to screw up my Time Capsule.  The amber light keeps blinking and it's not being picked up when my Macbook scans or when my PC scans for the wireless ne

I can't find my Time Capsule on my networks anymore.  It's like it doesn't exist. We got hit by a storm and that might have caused our internet modem from ATT to fry.  I replaced the modem today but now my Time Capsule isnt working.  It's blinking amber.  The PC its connected to through the ATT modem isn't finding it as it scans and its not in utilities.  My MacBook isn't finding the time capsule either when it scans.  Whenever I hooked up all the wires to the time capsule and the modem, the internet stops working.  I've tried resetting the time capsule but it's still blinking.  I had all my computer equipment on a power surge protector. A pretty good one.  All my other equipment is fine.  The ATT modem was old, so I thought it might not have even been the lightening.  Nothing else in home was injured by storm.  I am freaking out and need help!!!  I can't use my MACbook to do my internet work and all my files were backed up on the time capsule.
Another problem. My Time Machine isn't backing up now either.  What is up with that?
I would be soooo grateful if someone can help me!  Thanks a million!

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Still ! having issues connecting Vista or XP PCs to Time Capsule disk

I know there are several posts on this subject, but I've followed most/all of them (as well as posts on other forums) and I still have not had any luck.
If anyone with experience in this can help me through it, I'd greatly appreciate it!
    My setup is as follows:
    * new 1TB Time Capsule
    * macbook running 10.5.7
    * Sony VAIO on XP Home w/SP3
    * brand new Dell Vista Home Premium
    * misc other equipment running on network w/o issue
All computers can access the TC network without issue.
I've tried to connect to the TC disk by both mapping the drive (using the TC IP or TC name) and using the AirPort Disk utility. While I've gotten various errors (do not have permission, cannot recognize name, etc), the most common error on both machines is "Could not connect. Enable NetBIOS and try again(53)". On both the XP and Vista, I've gone into the network properies>TCP/IP>advanced>WINS tab and clicked "Enable NetBIOS", but this has no effect.
While I've tried all settings with the same luck, my TC disk sharing is currently set to use accounts. I have unique accounts for the mac, XP, and vista. The mac can connect in every scenario I setup, of course.
I can get both the Vista and the XP to connect to a shared folder I've setup on the macbook hdd, but again, I cannot get the PCs to connect to the TC disk.
On occasion, I will see the TC name in the Vista's Network view. I have never seen in in the XP's network view. The strangest part to me is that on about 5 or so occasions, I have been able to go from not being able to connect to the TC disk to connecting by unplugging/replugging the TC's power cord. However, the connection between the Vista and the TC is usually lost within minutes and I'm back to square one (I've never been able to connect to the XP).
On the Vista, I have already tried the registry edit: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\ and changing lmcompatibilitylevel to 1.
Is there a definitive solution known for this? My priority is to connect the Vista as the XP machine is dying. However, I added info about the XP in case it would help troubleshoot my issue.
If anyone has the expertise and patience to walk me through this, I'd be forever thankful. I have wasted WAAAAY too much time already, and I'm about to throw in the towel. I need a miracle!!

The workgroup is the same on the TC disk setting, the XP, and the Vista. At least for me, the problem is caused by something else. The strangest thing I am seeing is that sometimes I can get the XP and/or Vista machine to connect by simply unplugging/replugging the power supply to the TC - this is only by cycling the TC and making no other changes. However, usually within 5-10 mins after connecting, the Explorer will stop responding and I'll be back to the same problem and getting errors like: network path does not exists; windows can see 10.0.1.1 but cannot connect; cannot connect, must enable NetBIOS and try again; etc
I am always able to ping the IP successfully, but connecting to the disk and STAYING connected has been a lost cause for me so far.
If I can't figure this out, I'll be forced to send files from the XP and Vista to the macbook hdd, and then put the files on the TC disk. That's a solution that I'd be disappointed in, seeing as the the Apple store was very convinced that there would be no issue using the TC disk in my proposed network.

  • 2nd DNS Server- Cause Issues on Main Network?

At work there is already a Windows 2003 Domain controller that serves up DNS and DHCP. I want to try and deploy iCal 2, which requires DNS, Open Directory and a FQDN name for my server.
I already have the DNS name. However, will configuring and running DNS cause any issues on the network with the other computers, which get their DHCP address and DNS requests from the Windows server? I'm not going to deploy DHCP, and thus, I won't be introducing a 'rogue' DHCP server on the LAN. However, I'd like to be sure I'm not going to disturb anything before I proceed.

having your own DNS server is not dangerous unless clients get that address. If you are not running DHCP on the new server your clients will not get that as their DNS.

  • DNS Server working for top level domain but not host

    Hello,
I just set up the DNS server on my server and thought I had it working until I tried the sub-domains. I could get to example.com but mail.example.com and www.example.com did not resolve properly even though I had specified them as aliases for the machine record.
Does anyone know where to look for the cause of this problem? Below I have included my zone file for the domain:
    ns1:/var/named$ more shenzhenguide.com.zone
    $TTL 3600
    shenzhenguide.com. IN SOA ns1.shenzhenguide.com. info.shenzhenparty.com. (
    2006061012 ; serial
    3h ; refresh
    1h ; retry
    1w ; expiry
    1h ) ; minimum
    shenzhenguide.com. IN NS ns1.shenzhenguide.com.
    shenzhenguide.com. IN NS ns2.shenzhenguide.com.
    shenzhenguide.com. IN A 61.145.163.184
    ns1 IN A 61.145.163.184
    shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1
    www.shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1
    mail.shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1
    *.shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1
    shenzhenguide.com. IN MX 1 ns1
ns1 IN TXT "aliases don't work"
    ns2 IN A 210.17.235.228

If you enter "www.shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1" there has to be a dot after the .com like : "www.shenzhenguide.com. IN CNAME ns1" but you usually drop it to "www IN CNAME ns1" instead.
(I don't think you can call the host in a domain for a subdomain).
    Try it like this:
    $TTL 3600
    shenzhenguide.com. IN SOA ns1.shenzhenguide.com. info.shenzhenparty.com. (
    2006061012 ; serial
    3h ; refresh
    1h ; retry
    1w ; expiry
    1h ) ; minimum
    shenzhenguide.com. IN NS ns1.shenzhenguide.com.
    shenzhenguide.com. IN NS ns2.shenzhenguide.com.
    shenzhenguide.com. IN A 61.145.163.184
    ns1 IN A 61.145.163.184
    www IN CNAME ns1
    mail IN CNAME ns1
    shenzhenguide.com. IN MX 1 ns1 (maybe use: shenzhenguide.com. IN MX 1 mail.shenzhenguide.com. instead)
    ns2 IN A 210.17.235.228
    What's this? :
    *.shenzhenguide.com IN CNAME ns1
And the domain is now handled by zoneedit (with all A records for mail and www.):
    host -v www.shenzhenguide.com
    Trying "www.shenzhenguide.com"
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;www.shenzhenguide.com. IN A
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    www.shenzhenguide.com. 7200 IN A 61.145.163.184
    ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
    shenzhenguide.com. 6688 IN NS ns17.zoneedit.com.
    shenzhenguide.com. 6688 IN NS ns3.zoneedit.com.
    host -v -t mx shenzhenguide.com
    Trying "shenzhenguide.com"
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    shenzhenguide.com. 7200 IN MX 0 mail.shenzhenguide.com.
    And there's no reverse:
    host -v 61.145.163.184
    Trying "184.163.145.61.in-addr.arpa"
    Host 184.163.145.61.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
