Hello, itunes on G5 hard drive in a Mac Pro drive bay. How get off?

Hi,
My G5 recently failed on the mother board level. Had two hard drives in it and brought a Mac Pro which already had one drive in it.
Formated the drive and installed my Leopard up to 5.8. Well, I thought I could just update my other hard drives and then back up my itunes, ...
Well, the install disc wants me to format that drive before it installs the OS.
Now, I can see the files and my attempt to just copy files over was not successful.
Anyone know what I can do?

You're right but just to be sure it's not a hardware issue it's always one of the first things to check. Not all of us were lucky enough to start off with 4 drives installed.
the G5 Quad was 'rare' in that they could actually use GUID or APL partition types
That Mac Pro is no different. In fact, the MP also boots from both partition schemes as well as MBR. It just won't install Mac OS X to those other schemes so you need to resort to cloning.
Regardless of the partitioning/partitioing scheme it should still present itself to Disk Utility.

At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
Operating System
Default location of iTunes Folder
Mac OS X
/Users/[your username]/Music
Microsoft Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
Microsoft Windows Vista
\Users\[your username]\Music\
Microsoft Windows 7
\Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8) How may I backup iTunes to an external hard drive? The Backup function under the File tab appears to only allow backup to disc. I tried the Export function but this seems only to backup .txt files.

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
It constantly gets harder.

Restoring itunes from external hard drive

-I used WD backup program to store itunes on external hard drive

-trying to restore itunes songsa from external drive and when I copied songs from external hard drive to new internal hard drive which has itunes program, only song titles appear and track number for songs I ripped from CDs. I know MP3 and AAC save tag data, and I believe AIFF does as well (if you want to keep them in full-quality but space-greedy format). I don't think WAV supports tagging which is why they were lost. Read:

This time make sure you have a complete backup of your itunes folder (which, in fact you may still have). That way you can recover your complete library and everything intact (as long as you keep your backups up to date).

Copying iTunes to external hard drive

Hi All,
I am trying to copy my iTunes folder to an external hard drive to transfer to a new laptop.
I have followed the instruction online, consolidate in iTunes, close iTunes, drag and drop to external hard drive etc. However, it get to about 3/4 of the way through then comes up with an error stating that a particular song is corrupt. So I go into iTunes and delete the entire Album which that song is on. I also search within Explorer within the iTunes folder and the search results keep coming up with the XML file only. Its like the corrupt song only exists within this file.......strange?? It's driving me insane!
Can anyone help?

Your hard drive is probably getting flakey. See this User Tip for a backup strategy. Unlike Windows Explorer when SyncToy finds a file that it just can't copy it records it as an error and then proceeds to carry on with the next operation. For things that matter it is worth trying another couple of runs when the machine/drive has had a chance to cool down, but first make sure you try to copy off everything that matters to you while you still can...

Install iTunes.
Once install, hold SHIFT and launch iTunes.
When prompted, point iTunes to the correct location for the iTunesLibrary.itl file which should be in the iTunes folder under <user>/Music on the old drive.

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.
To organize your library properly see Make a split library portable.
If you don't have a working version of the library that can be transformed into a portable shape I have tools and techniques that can repair the broken links.
