Hello, Mac doesn't have or know what program to use to open cd designed for windows
Hello, How do I upload photos from an older Samsung cell phone? My Mac doesn't know what program or app to use. The product cd is for use with windows. What software must I have to open these files? Went to App store, & there are too many apps. Which one do I need? Can't install the photos into Iphoto. I'm still new at this.
Install Windows on your Mac or ask a friend who owns a PC to help you.

I am working in Windows and every time I open an attachment, Firefox asks what program to use to open files of this type. I always select the proper program and then check the box that says use this program for all future files of this type. In spite of that, the program continues to ask for every file. How do I turn off this feature and just have the program remember the correct program to use for each type of file extension?
Regardless of your download preferences, web servers can trigger a download prompt by sending either the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' or the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header. You can check if that's the case by examining the server response headers in the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console Web Console].
For the latter problem install the InlineDisposition add-on and see if it helps.

Firefox doesn't go by the file extension like other browsers might. Wrong MIME type or a missing MIME type and Firefox will ask you what you want to do with the file. -
Specifying what app is used to open a link for PDF

I am trying to make a link to a file open up in Adobe Acrobat Reader and not in any other app like IE etc....
Is this possible to do regardless of what other defaults the users computer has...

If there's a way to control that, I'm unaware of it. It's been my experience that it's the same behavior you see when opening a new window. Unless you are using JavaScript, it's totally dependent on the configuration of the viewer's PC as to whether the new window is spawned or whether they just get a new tab in the browser.

I am being asked 'How do you want to open this file'? when I tried to open the trial version of Elements 11 for the first time. Options included 'Look for an App'; Adobe Reader; Internet explorer; Notepad; Paint; Windows Media Player; Windows Photoviewer; Word or Wordpad? Which is the best option please? Thanks
Not sure what you are saying. The actual program is a 7z file which can be opened with any packer program these days like the original 7zip of course but also WinZip and others. If you're referriung to the download assistant, then that is a normal executable, but it requires Flash Player and Adobe AIR to be installed properly on the system.

You can use the Sharing tab of System Preferences to configure the firewall to block all ports except for those specified; you can use the command-line ipfw utility to set up more detailed firewall configurations.

I can, with 99.99% certainty, tell you that you are absolutely right in not wanting to download or install this "Helper," whatever it is (but we can be equally certain it would not "help" anything).
I cannot comment as to Oglethorpe's recommendation of 'adwaremedic'; I am unfamiliar with it. His links to the Apple discussion and support pages warrant your time and attention.
It might be really simple -- Trying looking in your Downloads folder, trash anything that you don't know with certainty is something you want to keep, and then Secure Empty your Trash. Then remove the AdBlock extension, LastPass, and Web of Trust extensions to Safari and re-boot. If the issue goes away, still be extraordinarily careful in the future.
Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be that simple to get rid of, in which case I'd then try the line by line editing in HT203987.
I have no further suggestions (other than a complete wipe and re-install...but that's a pain because trying to restore from Time Machine would simply ... restore the Mal).
For the rest of us, please post when you find a solution.

I’m going to get the I Mac and since the new I Mac doesn’t have DVD drive on it I was thinking to get the Samsung SE-506AB Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer in order to burn movies from I movie do I need a special software for that since the SE-506ab comes only with windows software.. but I did check and it is compatible with apple. Can you please advise me and or let me know if I’m buying the right stuff or if there is any other blu ray that will work with the I mac as plug and play.

HaimThis freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing. -

That depends on what you have on the MBA...if you have videos, move the videos to the external drive. If you have a lot of music, create a folder/library for the music and point iTunes there for the music. If you have a lot of photos for iPhoto, make a new library on the external drive and move our photos over there and then select that library as the default library for iPhoto to use.
Those are the big files and should take a lot of the load off the internal storage. -
How do I redeem my digital copy when my new mac doesn't have a disc drive?
I just bought a dvd with digital copy but my Mac doesn't have a disc drive. I have the redemption code but can't load the disc to redeem it like it asks. TIA
You need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive which can read/write to/from the media and is compatible with a computer. I don't own a PS3, but from what I just saw on their website, I don't believe that would be compatible.

I downloaded an update for my Safari web browser to "snow leopard". When I click on the .dmg file, a window opens up with a .pkg file but when I click on the .pkg file I get a prompt saying that it doesn't know what program to open it with.
I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.
