Hello there. Any tips for an affordable AVCHD camcorder for Final Cut Pro X?

Hello there.
I am enthusiast for the new Final Cut Pro X.
I am now starting to learn with iMovie '11 and I would like to buy a AVCHD camcorder. It should be affordable and compatible with iMovie '11 and Final Cut Pro X. Any tips? I live in Italy.
Thank you in advance.
Gianluca

I use an SDT 750 and an AC 90, both Pansonic cams, both are set to shoot 1920 x 1080 50P.
FCP X works just fine with this footage as does interlaced.
If you Mac is fast enough you won't need to transcode to Prores/Optimise for simple Projects it works directly with imported media.

  • Is there any way to remove a glare spot with final cut pro 4?

I have several glare spots from my lights that are
distracting. How can I remove those?

Depending on the background and If the shot is static and the glare spots are small you might be able to add the same clip over top of itself, cut a hole in the top clip (using a garbage matte) and move the bottom clip so it's not showing the glare. Then feather the edges of the matte.
    Crude, but sometimes works.
Could also try playing with the 3 way color corrector filter.

No. You simply sign in to the App Store and download it again. AppStore knows that you already paid for it.

  • Retrieving imported AVCHD files from Final Cut Pro X

Hi there, does anyone know how to retrieve raw AVCHD clips from Final Cut Pro X, after they have been imported? I shot some footage on my GH2 and it DID import from the camera into FCP X, but it's not running smooth at all. I heard that it's better to convert the files into pro res first, but I wanted to see if it worked. It does work, but not very well. So now I want to find the original video files I imported and convert them into pro res and then import again. Anyone had experience with this?

I think it all comes back to work flow. The whole reason I have opted to convert the original files to pro res is because it is choppy in the timeline when I'm editing. It seems it's true that FCP X really prefers to work with 'optimized media'...or Pro Res instead of reformatted versions of AVCHD. I would like to work with this original format, mainl because the footage isn't as compressed and hasn't lost a generation...and look absolutely pure and gorgeous in high bit rate from my GH2, however, what choice do I have but to convert to Pro Res if I am unable to edit smoothly? I think Ian had the right idea when he said to compare the footage of both, but again, if I can't even edit in AVCHD then what's the point? I think Apple needs to rectify this in the next update as I'm sure there are so many users out there who would prefer editing in this original format. Is there a noticeable loss of quality, that's what I am curious about.

  • Is it possible to create DVD Templates with Motion for burning Blue Ray DVDs from Final Cut Pro X?

Is it possible to create DVD Templates with Motion for burning Blue Ray DVDs from Final Cut Pro X?

As far as I know, motion templates can only be used with DVD Studio Pro. FCP X only lets you add a background image to the DVD menu.

  • How do I turn on the GUI controls for the Focus Blur Effect in Final Cut Pro X

I can't find the setting that enables the GUI control overlay to manipulate the parameters of the Focus blur effect in Final Cut Pro X. When I have the clip and the focus effect selected I only get a center element overlay. At one point I had controls for all the other elements of this effect.
anyone know a shortcut or how I can toggle these controls back on?

I don't see any other screen controls either.
Maybe there was a change sometime, or maybe you were using a different effect?

  • Refining search for specific words in clips in Final Cut Pro X

Heads-up - I'm not a newbie to video editing, but I am certainly not a pro.  Just an "advanced consumer" getting to know Final Cut Pro X,  who has a hobby of video-taping mountain bike races, then creating a video for a year-end banquet.  I have many hours of clips I to sort through.  To catalog each clip I have keywords such as "fast" and "muddy", and marks that further describe the racer's moments.
For example, I have a long clip where I see boy amongst a bunch of other big guys doing stuff also worth noting.  I put a mark  "boy hops log" where he's doing his thing.  Keywords to describe the boy are "juniorr" "log" and "hop/jump/wheelie". Within the same clip I will  mark other racer activities with remarks like "slip" "spectator says good job"  etc.
Back to the boy, who is in multiple clips, say 15.  After the huge job of noting each clip is done, now comes the time to try to sort out the best clips of our boy who I want to include in the video.
I will use the Search Filter, using Text Field "boy".  The Search Filter finds boy in all 15 clips.  But now I have to carefully read each mark to try to find where my boy is buried in a busy, umpteen noted,  4 minute clip.
I seem to recall that FCE had a Function Key  which I could press to specifically find the next boy.
Is there such a Function or key combination that will go next search item in a large field of clips?
If not, it certainly would be of help for the next revision of FCX. (Plus having keyword collections in one color, marks in another).
    Thanks for any assistance, Kelly

Hi Tom and thank you very much for helping.  I know what I'm asking is a bit esoteric.
I already know how to refine the search.  Usually what I do is look for any incidences of "boy" on first pass of creating my story  All I'm looking for is boy.  As I continue to build the video I might look for the boy to do something interesting.
Let's say the boy is fast, hops logs, and passes big guys;  I know to continue refining my search I'd click on the search icon, then add  Text and Keywords, Reels, decide between any/all  etc to drill down to exactly what I want.  However, I'm still left with long clips, and very large areas of text to read.
Let's say that I found 5 clips with "boy" "hop" "pass". The clips are often long, with multiple marks and keyword collections with In/Out points.
I know my inserted picture is teeny and doesn't really help much.  But it shows that the word "boy" is buried in two marks.  Each mark lives on a long clip. I must thoroughly read each clip mark to find "boy".
I'm sure there's better ways to notate clips.  There must be overwhelming volumes in real production studios.  If there's a better way to organize, I'm open to suggestion!

  • Cannot Import AVCHD Video in Final Cut Pro X

I have done this before. Final Cut Pro X before let me import all of my AVCHD footage but now, when I click import footage, It opens up to the camera. Any help?

Use Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion to trash your preferences. Repair permissions in the Disk Utility.
Doesn't matter if the card has worked before if it it isn't working now.
Don't open the card ot access the MPEG files with any software. All you can do is damage it.
Can you view the media on the card in the camera playback system?
Relaunch FCP with the card mounted. Open camera import. If it doesn't appear click on Open Archive. Select the card on the desktop. Do not open the card. Just select the card and click OK. What happens exactly?

  • What are the format settings for the Panasonic HDC-HS9 on Final Cut Pro?

I have the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and I have recorded a load of stuff; however when it comes down to editing it I can't seem to get the right format setting/easy set up in Final Cut Pro.
    Can anyone help?

Have you used the Log and Transfer window and transcoded the AVCHD files that that camera records to ProRes? If not try that. AVCHD has to be transcoded in order for FCP 6 to work with it, and ProRes is a lossless compression so it's the way to go here I think. You open the preferences in the Log and Transfer window (opened by typing shiftcmd8). The prefs are in a button with a little gear picture on it in the Log and Transfer window. You navigate to the original files shot by your camera and choose ProRes 422 as the codec. Then set sequence settings to be ProRes. You also must have the latest FCP software to all to work.

  • AVCHD cameras and Final Cut Pro

What is the best way to deal with the issue of AVCHD files not running native in FCP
Am I doomed to a life of Transcoding?
    Ric

It would be nice if we could at least drop AVCHD into a sequence for cutting and choosing rather than making those commitments at the ingest stage.
At that point use Media manager to Transcode so we can continue editing in a proper codec.
A few years ago you couldn't drop HDV into FCP either. And the same attitude that you get about AVCHD now was spewed about HDV.
HDV certainly isn't a "proper" codec either. But at least we can see it. Some day native AVCHD playback will be in FCPs bag of tricks too.
So, as far as I'm concerned the OP's question is valid and intuitive. And it deserves a better response than "... If you don't like the way Final Cut deals with the media use a different application."
    ricsyme,
Apple will eventually get around to supporting the type of functionality you're seeking. I can almost guarantee that.
But don't think "... Am I doomed to a life of transcoding.."
the way I look at it is "... I'm so happy to be liberated from logging & capturing tape!..."
Even in it's current state, Log & Transfer of AVCHD is soooo much better than Log & Capture of tape.
And for the time being you can also use ClipWrap to "rewrap" mts files to .mov and then use media manager to transcode after you do your initial cutting. Just don't try to leave them in their rewraped state any longer than you have to.
    best,

  • AVCHD Footage in Final Cut Pro 7

I recoreded and event with my Sony hrx 5u. I let the camera record until the event was finished so i ended up with one large file to transcode into final cut my problem is when i went into the memory card the footage had cuts but when in log and transfer it was a complete file but in adobe premier cs5 the footage had cuts but not in Final cut as it should be. Is the cuts normal for a large file in AVCHD from the memory card.

As I understand it, many of the cameras will segment footage as it records so as to be compatible with file systems that have file size limits. The metadata includes "bridge" information that allows the footage to be retrieved as a single file if the file system will allow it. FCP will allow it.

  • Backup AVCHD Camcorder using Final Cut Express

I have previously used Final Cut Express to create a backup copy of all the video on my AVCHD Hard Drive Camcorder. However, since that time, I had to reinstall Final Cut Express. I can no longer remember or find how to do this again. Can someone please help? Did apple remove this functionality?

I just purchased FCE 4 with a new iMac but haven't used it yet. But I do know that iMovie '09 has an Archive feature that will do what you are looking for. It copies the contents of the camera in it's original Full HD format to the hard drive. I do this then import the video to iMovie using the compressed file type. With the original on the hard drive, you can always re-import to iMovie '09 (and FCE 4, I presume) if you want to use the Full HD original format at a later date.

  • AVCHD Camcorder with Final Cut

Does it matter what format AVCHD camcorder is purchased for compatibility with Final Cut Express 4? Format as in Hard Drive, DVD, etc. I'm using Mini-DV now and have heard some new formats will not transfer from camcorder to Mac.
    Thanks

All varieties of camcorders will be compatible as long as they are specified as shooting in AVCHD. Make sure you don't buy one that has a nonstandard specification of "AVCHD Lite" or something like that. I've personally found the hard drive or flash drive ones to work quite well.
