Hello to Karsten, Karl, David, Lennart!

This is a fond hello to Karsten S., Karl P., David B., and Lennart T. -- all of whom provided me with truly great assistance in the past. Impressive and wonderful, and never forgotten.
I actually haven't had a chance to work on any movie projects lately, but I feel a new one coming on. I'm still using iMovie HD 6 (that's where all of my projects "live") -- I have not made the switch to iMovie 08 or 09.
I'm wondering what I'm missing by staying with iMovie HD 6 (rather than using 08 or 09). Do you have any quick thoughts on the subject?
How painful is it to transfer HD 6 movie projects to 08? I'm sticking with Tiger OS for now so I believe iLife 09 is not available to me (it requires Leopard).
Hope you are all doing well!
Diana

Hi! ..Here's a quick reply ..I may answer in more depth later ..am very busy today.
I use both iMovie '09 and iMovie HD 6. (..I did use iMovie '08 before '09 arrived, but it's just a 'stop-gap' intermediate version really; it didn't have many of iMHD6's features, and was more of a simple 'assembly editor' which just let you attach one clip to another, with some transitions & titles).
To see what iM'08 can do, just take a look at its Tutorials pages: http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/imovie08.html
..There are video tutorials there for iMovie '09 and iDVD, as well.
iMovie '09 is far more "fully featured", and does most things which iMHD6 will do, but in a different manner ..instead of using longitudinal 'timeline tracks', you slap things into a workspace, and extra audio, etc, is added as little 'tabs' stuck to the clips you're working on. It's different from all the previous iMovie versions up to iMHD6, but different doesn't mean 'bad'.
The old-style third party Plug-Ins which could be downloaded for versions up to iMHD6 do NOT work with the new versions. However, the newer versions show titles, effects, etc, in 'real time' without any need for rendering. The rendering is applied at Export or Sharing, so that there's no waiting for things to be adjusted during the actual editing.
iMovie '09 also has built-in stabilisation (ah!) to correct shaky shots, and iM09 and iM08 have built-in audio 'ducking', to knock down audio levels (if wanted) when applying extra audio.
There've been pages and pages about the export quality of the latest versions when sending to iDVD, or web-uploading, or doing anything else with edited material ..only processing alternate video lines thus giving reduced resolution, etc. Simply keeping everything in Apple Intermediate Codec seems to solve problems - if they have them - for most people.
Gotta go now, but I'll reply in more depth another time..

  • Still frames got cropped when I exported to DV, how do I avoid this?

    I'm using iMovie HD 5.0.2. Made a film and used alot of still photos of bands with the name of the band zooming in and then a transition between each. In iMovie the photos were perfect but when I exported to my DV several of the photos were cropped. I made two versions - one in NTSC and one in PAL and it happened to both. I did not choose QT margins either. What can I do to avoid that happening again.

    Thanks Sue,
    I read it but haven't tried it yet. One thing though, does it matter that I am not using the Ken Burns effect? The cropping happened with that not selected.

  • I can NOT make DATE_FORMAT work...any ideas?

    Hello all,
    In reviewing David Powers' fantastic book, 'PHP Solutions', I decided to do some work with dates in a database.
    The table where the dates are stored is called cal_dates and is DATE type.
    All the dates are stored as yyyy-mm-dd
    When I write my query and add DATE_FORMAT, the page bombs no matter what I try.
    As in:
    SELECT *
    DATE_FORMAT(cal_dates, '%c/%e/%Y') AS cal_dates
    FROM cal_data
    and I get a white screen.
    So, I figured perhaps I should change the alias (the example in Pwers' book on page 390 does not use a different alias, but after struggling with this for almost 2 days, I am now trying anything):
    SELECT *
    DATE_FORMAT(cal_dates, '%c/%e/%Y') AS cdate
    FROM cal_data
    and I get another white screen.
    Originally, my query was designed with a WHERE clause because I am selecting data from one table based on an a variable, but I read somewhere that DATE_FORMAT should not be used with WHERE...which is funny, since the two examples shown above with WHERE omitted still bomb.
    The original query:
    SELECT *
    FROM cal_data
    WHERE cal_data.page_ym = '$dateRef%'
    works PERFECTLY. It pulls all information in the table relevant to the $dateRef variable.
    The reason I wanted to use DATE_FORMAT is because I wanted to take the dates in my table from yyyy-mm-dd and display them in a different format.
    But to no avail. Any thoughts or musings would be appreciated. I'm stonewalled.
    Thank you all!
    Sincerely,
    wordman

    iPHP,
    I think I have too many queries posted here. I have tried many things in an effort to test what could be wrong, so let's start fresh.
    This one works, sans DATE_FORMAT:
    $sql = "SELECT page_ym, cal_dates, available, location, event
            FROM cal_data
            WHERE cal_data.page_ym = '$dateRef%'";
    Again, I know this one has additional columns, but again, I've been trying many things since the original post and this is the format I'll be wanting to use.
    Anyhow, as soon as I add DATE_FORMAT to the query, AND change the alias:
    $sql = "SELECT page_ym, cal_dates, available, location, event
            DATE_FORMAT(cal_dates, '%c/%e/%Y') AS cdate
            FROM cal_data
            WHERE cal_data.page_ym = '$dateRef%'";
    it bombs. I have used the column name as well as a different name for the alias, same thing.
    I'm wondering if I whould use a seperate query just to pull the dates?
    Thanks!
    Cheers,
    wordman

    How do I get the pictures out of my iPhone 4s and save it into my PC?

    Hello i-am-big-david,

  • How to get Started with Obj Oriented AS3? (Flash Help seems broken)

    OK I dont want to be the noob that doesn't read the manual
    and asks stupid questions, but I'm stuck here. It's been a LONG
    time since I had any real flash experience (Flash 5 in depth and a
    little Flash 8). But now my job has lead me back into some flash
    work & I'm basically starting from scratch. I'm trying to just
    get a simple SWF to load an external class & have the class
    retrun a value from a method.
    I define
    package
    public class Greeter
    public function sayHello():String
    var greeting:String;
    greeting = "Hello World!";
    return greeting;
    in an .as file (which is located in the same directory as my
    .fla) and then in frame 1 of my time line I have:
    var myGreeter:Greeter = new Greeter();
    mainText.text = myGreeter.sayHello("Bob");
    When I try & test the movie I get 2 errors:
    1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant:
    Greeter.

    CPruittCCB,
    > var myGreeter:Greeter = new Greeter();
    > mainText.text = myGreeter.sayHello("Bob");
    >
    > When I try & test the movie I get 2 errors:
    I'm only getting one, which is "Incorrect number of
    arguments. Expected
    no more than 0," and the reason for that is because the
    sayHello() method
    isn't set up to receive any parameters. If you change your
    existing ...
    public function sayHello():String
    ... to this ...
    public function sayHello(msg:String):String
    ... just as a for-instance, that error goes away. Have you
    saved both the
    FLA and the AS file? If you haven't saved your FLA yet, it
    won't know where
    to find your Greeter.as file (that is, the Greeter class),
    which would
    explain your "type not found" error.
    Check Edit > Preferences, ActionScript category, and
    click the
    ActionScript 3.0 Settings button to make sure your classpath
    setting has an
    entry with nothing but a dot (.) in it. That dot means "Look
    in the current
    folder" when Flash needs to start hunting for external
    classes. Otherwise,
    you'll have to use the import statement to let Flash know
    where that Greeter
    class is.
    Another thing to consider, if you're expecting to see the
    word "Bob" in
    the text field, is that you're not currently passing the
    incoming parameter
    back out of the method (because there is no incoming
    parameter). Something
    like this would do it:
    package {
    public class Greeter {
    public function sayHello(msg:String):String {
    var greeting:String;
    greeting = "Hello, " + msg;
    return greeting;

    Masterminds Karl and Lennart (… or was it Matti?) did post here loooong threads, how to avoid "jaggies" with stills in the iApps (please use forum search for threads); so, basic rules are:
    * use Ken Burns effect while importing stills
    * don't let iMovie render final project
    * drag'n drop project's icon directly into iDVD, let iDVD do rendering
    * avoid any inbetween exports in lossy codecs....
    sure, Compressor/part of DVDSP has much more, elaborated features, how to set up compression.. after some years spending $$$$ and to study the manuals and learning-by-doing, you will produce much better results..

  • Ken Burns speed not uniform

    I'm making a small (6 minute) slideshow in iMovie 4.0.1, using only stills. Sometimes when I apply the Ken Burns effect, it won't actually start until the time for that photo is halfway through. Then it zooms on to the end. It doesn't always happen this way, but about half the time. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I try to re-do it, but I can't seem to make it right.

    Thanks Karl and Lennart for your help.
    Funny, Lennart, I played with your suggestion last night, but was afraid I might corrupt something, so I didn't save the change. Now that I know it's ok to do, I'll try again tonight.
    Karl, thanks for all the zooming tips. I checked the first photo that misbehaved, and I was zooming out from 1.0 to 1.15.
    Are you saying not to use the Reverse button in the Photo pane, but to work in the Menu bar to make a reversed clip and turn it into a DV clip? Sounds like more work than I had planned, but I certainly will give it a try.
    And when you say to remove the first 1 to 3 frames, would I split the playhead at that point and then delete the first part? Strange, I deleted half of the clip last night (as a test), but now I don't know how I did that. ...... Oh, wait, I remember - I dragged those points (forgot what you call them) under the main window with the clip, and then deleted, hoping I was deleting the right section. I did.
    I do have iLife '05, sitting in a box. I guess I should just get brave enough to install it. Do the same Ken Burns problems exist in '05?
    Thanks for all your help. I'm just so excited to be able to make DVDs for my family members.

  • RE: (forte-users) Forte not letting go of Oracleconnections

    Hello Amin, Samer and David,
    thank you for your fast reply.
    The technical support in Germany give at least a good idea to prevent the
    problem in future:
    Available at Forte 3.5 and above
    ER #35575 : user wants TOOL code to detect partition
    shutdown and time to do something
    Add a new interface, AtExitHandler, to Framework, with just one
    method: RunAtExit();
    Add a new method to Partition:
    AtExit(AtExitHandler);
    At shutdown time, managed partitions will call RunAtExit on all
    registered AtExitHandlers in the same sequence that they called
    AtExit on the partition.
    This activity takes place synchronously before we start tearing the
    partition apart, with the partition explicitly set by the active part
    agent to the one we are supposed to be shutting down, so it should be
    pretty safe for the user to run any code he likes.
    We will catch and display any exceptions produced by the callbacks,
    so that errors don't keep shutdown from proceeding (it is still possible
    for the user to write code that hangs and blocks shutdown that way,
    but I don't know what we could do about that besides getting into
    timeouts etc.).
    I think it is always a good idea to disconnect the DB-Session because you
    do it with
    most other tools from Database automatically, so why don't do it generally
    by use of
    a programming-language?!?
    I try this feature in any case.

    Hello all,
    some time ago we talked about the problem, that some DBSession-connects hang
    if the partition where the DBSessionSO is used goes down.
    Ok, there may be some problems with forte or the Database (TWO_TASK, and so
    on).
    Does anybody implement a DBSession.Disconnect() when partition goes down?
    I mean the partition exits by a kill or by escript or econsole, not by a
    Forte-Method call
    of somewhere else.
    I thought the solution must be a loop which registers for the
    task.Shutdown-event, but at
    the init-method I couldn't stay in a loop and wait, because i has to call
    the service-objects
    methods. Another solution may be a 'start task LoopMethod()' which are
    registers the
    event, but i don't try it now, because i don't know the side-effects
    because the thread calls
    a method of the 'mother-process' which goes down also.

  • Trouble creating virtual host

    Hello,
    I just purchased David Powers' books, Essential Guide to DW
    CS3 and PHP Object-Oriented Solutions and am anxiously awaiting
    their arrival. In the meantime, I installed xampp's version of
    Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. That install went fine and after some
    playing around I was able to view the localhost files that came
    with it. Now I am on to get a virtual host setup so that I can do
    my testing off-line. I followed the tutorial on David's site, but
    my files do not load in the browser (Firefox) window. If I type
    http://TSDevelopment or

    the browser forwards me to
    http://tsdevelopment/xampp
    and I see the same screen as if I went to
    http://localhost, namely xampp's
    welcome screen.
    I have gone over the David's tutorial twice and can't see
    that I am missing anything, but I must have (?).
    I am running on an XP Professional system.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    You don't *really* need virtual hosts to test many pages.
    Virtual hosts are
    necessary, though, if you are using root relative links.
    So - when you browse to
    http://localhost, you see the XAMPP
    screen? That's
    good.
    What have you done so far to get your virtual hosts setup?

    Hello, my name is David, and I had a question/ concern.
    I recently got a $50 apple itunes gift card, but upgraded to an android smartphone soon afterwards. I would like to know if it were possible to remove the remaining money from my account, and put it in paypal, or google play/google wallet cash. If that is not possible, treat this post as a complaint, and revise your system, because it is MY my money, and the apple ecosystem needs to not hold peoples cash to a service they never use anymore.
                                  -Thank You, David

  • Practical Windows Code and Driver Signing discussion

    Hello, my name is David Grayson and I work at Pololu Robotics & Electronics. I recently went through the process of signing all of our company's USB drivers and most of our installers for Windows. I encountered
    so many problems along the way that could have been easily avoided if someone had told me about them ahead of time. In response, I have written a 7000-word document that hopefully explains everything you need to know about code and driver signing:
    Practical Windows Code and Driver Signing
    If you are going through the same process, I sincerely hope that this document can clear up all of your confusion and save you a lot of time. I learned the hard way and now you can learn the easy way.  The basic conclusion of it
    all is that you should probably stay away from Go Daddy's certificates and use GlobalSign, and I provide detailed justifications for that.
    Click here to read the entire document.
    If you have any comments or questions, please post them here! If I missed anything or got anything wrong, let me know.  If you found the document useful and just want to thank me, then you can do that here too!

    David,
    Thanks! Sorry, I would have replied earlier but got diverted to the latest crisis.
    David Wrote:
    "I don't know anything about a Go Daddy "Driver Signing Tool"; maybe you found that statement elsewhere."
    My bad, I meant to say Godaddy's "Driver Signing Cert" as opposed to their "Code Signing Cert".
    And Yes, I followed your instructions and everything works fine on Win7 now that I installed the root certs you recommended!!
    Still I must find a way for my driver package to install without the warning message in Win7 without having users install the cert.
    Godaddy support (I have little confidence in them) swears up and down that I can double sign my Catalog file by following instructions here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh967734%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
    Signing a driver package with two signatures
    In some cases, you might want to sign a driver package with two different signatures. For example, suppose you want your driver to run on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Windows 8 supports signatures created with the SHA256 hashing algorithm, but Windows 7
    does not. For Windows 7, you need a signature created with the SHA1 hashing algorithm.
    Suppose you want to build and sign a driver package that will run on Windows 7 and Windows 8 on x64 hardware platforms. You can sign your driver package with a primary signature that uses SHA1. Then you can append a secondary signature that uses SHA256.
    You can use the same certificate for both signatures, or you can use separate certificates. Here are the steps to create the two signatures using Visual Studio.
    In the Solution Explorer window, right-click Solution SolutionName, and choose Configuration Manager. For the driver project and the package project, set Configuration to Win7
    Release, and set Platform to x64.
    Open the property pages for the driver package. Navigate to Configuration Properties > Driver Signing > General. In the Sign Mode drop-down list, select Production Sign. For Production
    Certificate, enter the path to your signing certificate.
    In the property pages for the driver package, navigate to Configuration Properties > Custom Build Step > General. For Description, select Performing Custom Build Step. For Execute
    After, selectDriverProductionSign. For Command Line, enter this command.
    Signtool sign /fd sha256 /ph /as /sha1 XX...XX $(TargetPath)
    where XX...XX is the hash of the certificate you are using for the the secondary signature.
    Note  To see the hash (also called the thumb print) of a certificate, open a Command Prompt window and navigate to the directory that contains your certificate. Enter the command certutil -dump CertName.pfx,
    whereCertName.pfx is the name of your certificate.
    From what I gather, the issue is:
    1. Godaddy's "Driver Signing Certs" defaults to signing with a SHA 256. For whatever reason, most Win7 installations do not have the appropriate root cert installed to support SHA 256.
    2. According to Godaddy if I resign my Catalog file again with SHA1 then everything should work. They claim they have done this with other users.
    3. According to Microsoft the  Signtool utility used with following parameters will resign a Catalog that's already signed with SHA1 to SHA256.
    Signtool sign /fd sha256 /ph /as /sha1 XX...XX $(TargetPath)
    But I need to resign to SHA1. If I can resign to SHA1, then everything should work properly with the GoDaddy root that's installed normally in Win7 machines.
    Questions:
    1. Is Godaddy giving me bad info? According to them I can sign my Catalog file twice with the same cert. According to you I will need another cert.
    2. If I can double sign the Cat file, what are the proper Signtool parameters to make sure its signed again with SHA1.
    The Microsoft sample is for going from SHA1 to SHA256, but I'll need to go from SHA256 to SHA1. If I was using Godaddy's Code Signing Cert this would be an issue.
    Thanks

  • Question for Karl, Lennart, Dan or any other expert?

    I have recently completed an iMovie 5.02 project which consist of scanned stills, slides and VHS video clips that were converted to digital through my Sony TRV 27 camcorder set on 16 bit. The stills and slides were imported into iPhoto, cropped 4:3, enhanced and saved. I then imported them into iMovie from that folder. I chose not to use too many transitions. The movie’s file is 28.06 GB and has a run time of approximately 1 hour 18 minutes. My computer is a G4 733 mh using 10.3.9 and quicktime 6.5.2. It has 512 ram. It has two 60 gig internal drives with 6.89 gig available on the main drive and 15.56 available on the slave internal drive. I also have an external IOMEGA 250 gig with 183.8 gig available. The entire movie project is on the external drive which does not have an operating system on it. Both of the other drives have 10.3.9. I have kept all of the drives maintained and repair permissions quite often. The movie project is very good quality. I am thrilled with the clarity of the stills, slides, etc.
    My problem is that when I burn the final DVD it contains spots where it pauses, and on some players it will revert back to the theme beginning. I am using Verbatium printable DVD disk that I purchased at Sam’s Club. These blanks are advertised to be compatible with speeds up to 16X. The friend that I am doing this for needs 11 copies. When I completed all of these, only five of them would play all the way through without pausing or stopping and reverting back to the beginning. The inconsistency has me puzzled. What suggestions would you have? Thanks so much for your help.
    I also want to thank all of you and everybody that contributes to this site. It has been a tremendous help to me over the last few years.

    Thanks everyone for your input. Karl, I have tried
    three different players and it does the same on all
    of them. Two of them are one year old, and the other
    is about three years old.
    Then, as Matt said, I'd be suspicious of the DVD media too.
    You didn't say how you burned the 11 copies. That may be important.
    To rule out problems with the media, here's what I'd try.
    1. Export the iMovie project to a Full Quality DV movie.
    2. Import that movie to iDVD. (You'll lose chapters. To preserve chapters, use QuickTime Pro to do a Save As of the reference movie iMovie stores in the Shared folder of the project. Save as a standalone movie. There's a folder for iDVD inside the Shared Folder.)
    3. Use iDVD to burn to a disk image instead of burning to a physical DVD.
    4. Use Disk Utility to burn that disk image to a DVD. If that plays okay in all DVD players, we know this method works on at least one (good) DVD.
    5. Burn additional DVDs and test as made. If they show problems, it's this media that's the problem. They are inconsistent.
    6. After you get new media, burn again with Disk Utility. If they work okay, that suggests again it was a media problem and the new media is okay.

    Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
    Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
    After this, do an update from the App Store.
    Thats all there is to it.
    For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
    Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
    There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

    Same password login and everything works local but on bluehost server  wont send mail.
    I contacted them and they said that i have to create mail on server from which mail will be sent.
    I did that too.
    But for what ever i put in mailconector array cant get that mail, and i really dont know what to do and who to ask.
    Until this point i could get every problem solved put this bugs me because this is the last stage of what i was tryong to do and that is to incorporate login system from the book to live page.
    this is the code i have:
    <?php
    $mailhost='ssl://mail.majapanic-tarot.com';
    $mailconfig=array(    'auth'         =>     'true',
                        'username'     =>     '[email protected]',
                        'password'     =>     'password',
                        'ssl'        =>    'ssl',
                        'port'        =>     '465');
    $transport=new Zend_Mail_Transport_Smtp($mailhost,$mailconfig);
    Zend_Mail::setDefaultTransport($transport);
    and this is what they stated in info about the mail:
    Mail Server Username: majapanic+majapanic-tarot.com  >>>>>>>> this plus i think is (at)
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.majapanic-tarot.com
    Incoming Mail Server: (SSL) box344.bluehost.com
    Outgoing Mail Server: mail.majapanic-tarot.com (server requires authentication) port 26
    Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) mail.majapanic-tarot.com (server requires authentication) port 465
    Supported Incoming Mail Protocols: POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
    Supported Outgoing Mail Protocols: SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)
    Please HELP!

    FIXED!!
    1)
    i finally did get the message problem was with:
    $mailhost='ssl://mail.domain.com';
    ssl:// was just nonsense and been removed
    2)
    'auth' => 'true' was changed to 'auth' => 'login'
    3)
    for bluehost i got information that it was tls secure connection protocol not ssl
    'ssl' => 'tls'
    4)
    port used '25' not 465.
    Didnt still tried 26 and 465 maybe they would work too.
