HelloWorldSwing tutorial -- still in need of repair?

hello, as a new SDN member, i may be posting this in the wrong place -- if so, please let me know where to re-post, and i'll do so.
yesterday, 3/22/2009, i was following the Swing tutorial at
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/start/compile.html
i followed the instructions as closely as possible -- i downloaded HelloWorldSwing.java and compiled(*) it with "javac HelloWorldSwing.java". But when i tried to run it with "java HelloWorldSwing", i ran into the same problem that user "_zee" described in a post on december of 2007, at http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=572888 . That is, following the instructions exactly, then trying to run the program leads to the following error:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorldSwing (wrong name: start/HelloWorldSwing)
as _zee pointed out, this can be a show-stopper for first-time users of java.
later, in the same thread, bruce chapman responded and said he contacted the tutorial writers to notify them that the command line to run the program was incorrect. he also provided a solution which was to change the command-line to "java start.HelloWorldSwing".
unfortunately, i did not find that chapman's command-line solution worked for me. i still receive a
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: start/HelloWorldSwing
this is not because I had copied any files up from to a parent directory, as chapman had conjectured. It's just that there simply is no "start" subdirectory: I've only downloaded one file, and compiled it: the HelloWorldSwing.java file, as the tutorial directs. That's it.
however, while i am a novice to Swing, I'm not a novice to Java programming and packages, so chapman's suggestion helped me to see this was a simple package problem. The HelloWorldSwing.java program is saying (on line 32) that it belongs to the "start" package. So I commented out line 32 and recompiled the file and successfully ran it as the tutorial directs: "java HelloWorld"
unless i'm missing something obvious -- always a distinct possibility :) -- the line 32 problem in this tutorial is really unfortunate and, since many early Java programmers may go directly to the Swing tutorial since it's more fun/graphical, and do not not know how to fix the packaging error, this may have cut short many potential bright future careers in Java :-) as _zee quite rightly pointed out.  wouldn't it be helpful to fix it?

I remember in Uni the first engineering course was designed to separate the wheat from the chaff -- to make as many people drop out as possible.

There is no way any fellow user here can know anything specific about your repair status.  You will need to call Apple and ask them yourself.

  • Try to open a video, then told I need to repair library

One of the non-admin users is having trouble with Quicktime (I think). Just started yesterday.
When we click on a video to play it, the following message pops up:
"Mac OS X needs to repair your Library to run applications. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this."
Then there are two fields below the message for me to type the name and password.
When I do this, nothing seems to happen. The error message goes away, but there is no indication that the "Library" is being repaired. If I try to open a video again, I get the same error message. I even tried waiting a couple of hours and then rebooting, but I still get the error message.
If I try to open Quicktime directly from the launchpad, I get the same error message.
This only happens with one user. The other two are not affected.
It seems that every other application runs fine.  Just can't open Quicktime.
    Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, but simply posting links to pages full of technical information will do nothing to help me. For example, I have no idea what safe mode is, or how to achieve it. I need step-by-step instructions in the form of "an idiots guide to"......

  • Permissions needing frequent repair; what's the underlying problem?

For a few weeks I've been running into permissions problems, usually related to not being able to empty the trash. For that I've used the *rm -rf* (etc) in terminal, which usually gets the job done. But in repairing permissions as a primary effort, I find that every few days I'm still getting lots of repairs needed, and many of them I don't find on apple's page of "Don't worry about these" messages.
What might underlie this ongoing crudification of my permissions?
I'm concerned now especially because I'm about to install a larger internal drive in my MBP (10.6.7) and I don't want to transfer these problems to the new drive. I'd like to clean this up decisively before migrating.
    Thanks.

Not a Mac user, but if the permissions problems are still there that might be part of your problem with artwork. The artwork cache appears to run on a data structure called a hash table, where information from the tag of the track is used to construct an index into the table where the "result" will be stored. If the index points to an empty location then you will get blank art. Corrupt permissions could well prevent access to the cached artwork files.
Perhaps your hard drive is on the way out. Make sure your backups are up to date.

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,

  • I have iPhoto 11, 9.4.1 installed. When my library was upgraded, I got a message the photos couldn't be imported and I need to repair iPhoto permissions. How do I do that? My photos are there, but I can no longer drag them to the photo stream.

I have iPhoto 11, version 9.4.1 installed. When my library upgraded, I got a message that the photos couldn't be inported and I need to repair iPhoto permissions. How do I do that? My photos are there, but I can no oonger drag them to the photo stream.

Disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's preferences and then go back and reenable it. See if that will jump start the process.  If that doesn't help try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto check its preferences to meka sure all is as you expect and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original
    MEssage.

  • Need help repairing Driver - pic included.

Hey guys, i have been trying to get boot camp to work on my macbook for ages. First i got it to work, but then when i used windows, it wouldn't recognize my wireless in my macbook. Anyways, to make a long story short, i used the boot camp assistant tonight to delete the windows partition, then i was trying to re-install windows XP.
As most of you know, the first step is to partition the disks, when i told it how much to partition of each it came up with a driver error saying i needed to repair the disks.
so, i went to disk utility to try and verify the disk, its did, but then it came up with this:
    http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f344/kawirider04/Untitled-1-1.jpg
any help would be great guys, i eventually want to run windows xp on my blackbook so i can play World of Warcraft with a higher framerate. Anyways, thanks in advance!
BTW - after i 'verify disk' i can't click on 'repair disk'

Boot up from your Install DVD and then launch Disc Utility to verify/repair the disc and permissions as well.

  • Unable to boot from install disk for needed disk repair

Hi- I need to repair my disk, but haven't been able to boot from the DVD. When I've tried (several times), I get a black screen with a long error message, ending in something like "hanging here." Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Laura

That is a kernel panic. Kernel panics on startup from an installer disc mean one of two things usually: 1. You are using an installer disc with an OS version that is not able to boot the computer model you have. Usually the version is too early for the model; 2. There's a serious hardware problem such as a dead hard drive or motherboard problem.

  • Mac os 10.9.2 "needs to repair my library" with a repetitive message. Now won't let me mail anything.

After giving my account all access privileges to its home folder including the folders within, I was able to get my desktop picture back, I could see the computer icon on the screen, and the annoying never ending "OS 10 needs to repair your library. Type in a your password..." message went away.
Now I can't use my mail functions. How could Apple have released this OS system? HELP.
In Mail, it asks for a Keychain password-one that i don't use here at my job, and then it doesn't allow you to type anything. I don't have such an account anyway.
I know there is an update 10.9.3, but I'm afraid of jumping out of the  frying pan into the fire. Will the update address these issues?

Try two things just to make certain that there are no problems with your hard drive. Do you have your original install disc that came with your Mac? If so boot from it and run Disk Utility to both verify and repair permissions. Then verify your hard drive - if errors are found, repair them.
Note that this may not fix your problem, but it will eliminate a corrupt disk.

  • Need to repair HD before installing mavericks HELP !!

    Dear all,
I have a perfectly working MacBook Air, built 2012 with 256 GB.
Mountain Lion does a great job, but I want to progress to Mavericks.
As advised, I ran disk Utility system check and this came up at veryfying disk:
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Invalid Volume free block count
The Volme MA_HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired
As advised I restart holding the command-R combo after which my computer starts to connect to the Internet searching for the boot-tool. then after about 30 seconds, I get a warining sign with apple.com/support - 1007F.
When I am on another network, the Internet logo keeps spinning for 20 minutes and then I get a -2007F failure.
I can not repair my disk it seems, although all is working fien.
Quickly made a Time Machine backup, but what can i do next ?
    thanks for your help !!

Same thing: Internet logo spinning for 10 seconds, then apple.com/support -100F.
In the meantime the computer works perfect under Mountain Lion.

The installation DVD is from another Mac, but is also Mac OSX 10.6
Is it required that I use the exact disk that shipped with my computer? (Go figure, it's in Minneapolis, I'm in Atlanta...).
The DVD however is in no way scratched or dirty. I will run the hardware test and report back.
    Thank you for the leads.

iPhoto keeps crashing! - then needs to repair the library. This is happening each time I import photos or even try to go in to an even and delete photos etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please it is so frustrating - I used to love iPhoto - now I regret upgrading to Lion

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Need to repair disk - what do I do????!!!

I've done a check on the disk utility and it says the following:
    "Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Apple Hardrive needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
However it doesn't give me the choice to click 'repair disk'. Do I need to reinstall? If so what is the safest way of doing this?
If I don't need to reinstall, what should I do?
    Any help much appreciated!

    Do this:
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
