Help! 10.3.9 won't start up or install 10.5.6

Ok I did a really stupid thing. I bought OS X 10.5.6 thinking it could install when I scrapped the computer of it's system software to see what happened but I tried to start up to install it and it did not unfort. It gets a Mach Kernal error and won't start up from any other oold software disks either. I don't know why that is. The OS on there is 10.3.9 but I don't have the disks for it anymore, they are long gone lost. So do I have to buy a whole new copy of 10.3.9 in order to fix this? Will buying 10.3 or 10.3.4 for a cheaper price reinstall the system software?

Hi IcyCool7227!
With additional RAM, the 17" eMac G4/1.25 GHZ will meet the Leopard System Requirements.
The posted RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
The original pre-installed version of OS X was Panther 10.3.3.
Therefore, as Limnos posted, you cannot install Puma 10.1.3.
You must uses a version of OSX, that is Panther 10.3.3 or higher.
Additional info HERE.
Again as Limnos posted, you need the Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.
Is that what you have?

  • Help!  G4 iBook won't start up

I had to shut down and restart my iBook two or three times in succession. On the final time, the iBook began to start up, but then there was a 'click' and it shut down completely. Now I can't get it to start up at all, when I press the start up button nothing at all happens. The battery is fully charged, I have tried it running off the mains, and have also tried holding down Shift etc. I can't start it up from the CD either, as it won't pull the CD in.
    Can anyone help please?

  • Need help with laptop that won't start up

I have a Toshiba c655 laptop that had some viruses on it; *thought* I'd fixed it and all was well.  When I turned off and re-started the computer, the screen showed "Toshiba Innovations", and at the bottom the options of pressing F2 for startup or F12 for boot manager...this screen is quickly replaced by a black screen with a white cursor in the top left hand corner.  When I hit F2 or F12 and go to those screens, I'm not computer savvy enough to know what options (if any) I should choose that might help me to get this thing started....seems nothing happens with any of the buttons I push.  The scenario I just described is the only thing this computer will do now.  Any help?  Thank you so much!

it sounds like missing system/boot  files on hdd
    1. try to press f2 during toshiba screen to go in bios and load default settings.
    2. press f12 and select boot from cd if you have system rapair disk...or any live cd to backup your files
    3. the last option ... press 0 on toshiba screen for system recovery...this will delete all information
    sorry for my english

  • '09 MacBook Pro won't start up after installing new hard drive and restoring from an external hard drive.

I am in the process of replacing my hard drive and have run into a problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 using a DVD I bought off Amazon. That went well and I then restored my hard drive using an external and Time Machine.
After that, things still looked good but I couldn't log in to my user (and access my MacBook) because my password wasn't working even though my hint was correct. Yes, I am POSITIVE my password was correct; I even tried a couple other passwords to humor myself. I then gave up and decided to restart the computer.
Now my MacBook won't start up at all. It goes o a gray screen with a still loading symbol for a couple minutes and then goes to a solid light blue screen. I've tried starting up while holding command+R and I tied holding just command and neither worked.
Did I install the wrong OSX because I didn't use the same DVD that came with the laptop? Is there something wrong with my hard drive already?
    Please help =[

You probably bought the wrong RAM that has different pin assignments, so it won't fit in the slot. Return it.
I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.
Doubling the memory does not make your computer run twice as fast.

  • Recently installed Creative Suite 6 and am using Acrobat Pro.  Suddenly it crashes and now it won't start.  I installed the current update but still not.  This happened before, in 2012, and was finally fixed.  what do I do?  Duncan

    Hi all,
My recently installed (Windows 8.1) Acrobat Pro (part of CS6) suddenly stopped working - now it won't start.
This happened on Windows 7 in 2012 and was eventually fixed.
Any advice on what I should do?  [I can't find where to post a question to the adobe help people]
    - Duncan

Well, the computer stopped starting up at all. It could never find the operating system. I tried safe mode and virtually every other non-standard start-up option. I then did target disk mode with another MBP and got the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then tried using disk utility and it couldn't retrieve retrieve the data using restore (writing to an external drive). I suspect that this means the hard drive would need to be replaced. In your expert opinions, is this necessarily true? Could this still be just a software problem, or perhaps some other piece of hardware?
Part of the reason I ask is that this laptop is now nearly five years old. It's needed a new battery for two years. If it's a virtual certainty that the hard drive is toast, I don't want to pay $150 for someone to take it out and try to recover any remaining data from it, only to reveal that the data is indeed irretrievable (since the computer itself is probably only worth $300-400 at this point). The nearest Genius Bar is also more than 2 hours away. Am I going about this the right way by using disk utility, given that the hard drive won't mount to the desktop of the other computer? If the hard drive can't be reat in target disk mode, does that confirm that it is the hard drive?
    Thanks
Oh also, it does still make the startup noise, even though I can't run the AHT since I can't get it to start up in safemode. I thought this mean that it passing various hardware tests. Does this not apply to the hard drive?

  • Portege R830 - Windows won't start after I install Comodo Firewall

    Good afternoon,
I purchased today a Portege R830, and after the Windows configuration was over, the first program I installed was the popular free firewall Comodo. After I rebooted, Windows 7 wouldn't start anymore. It would get stuck on the user login screen and I know it's a problem with the firewall because if I make a system restore to the restore point created by the firewall installer, the windows will start again.
So I ask if there is any incompability between the firewall and some software on the Toshiba. Has anyone ever had this problem? I've been trying to solve this issue all day long with no results. I even re-installed Windows 7 using the Toshiba recovery and the issue persists. I really love Comodo, and I want this firewall on my laptop, but Windows just won't start!
Any help would be very apreciated.

    Hi jillefsky,
Have you disabled the Windows firewall before you started with Comodo firewall installation? As far as I know Portege R830 is delivered with preinstalled McAfee security software and you should remove this program before you install any other security tools.
Generally speaking this issue has nothing to do with Toshiba and its recommendable to contact Comodo directly. Maybe they know about this issue so they can give you a proper answer.
But I dont understand why this program is so important for you. Windows has already an internal firewall so such programs are not necessary in my opinion. Just install a good antivirus program like AntiVir and activate automatic Windows updates. Thats all!

  • IBook G4 won't start up after installing promted itunes & security update

    HELP.
My iBook G4 was prompted to update iTunes & some security update. I always do this when prompted, and restart as requested.
I installed the updates and restarted, but this time my iBook won't boot up. It makes the regular chime noise, goes to the gray screen, gets past the apple logo, then goes to a blue screen with the cursor in the upper left corner. The cursor moves just fine, the caps & num lock lights work, but it just never gets past the blue. If I leave it alone for a while, the cursor disappears, and I get the turning circle in the lower middle of the screen (the one that comes up during the gray screen). It just sits and sits on the blue. Hard drive isn't making any unusual sounds.
I tried starting it up from the Install Disc, which worked fine. I ran the disk utility and it said it didn't need any repairs.
    Still won't start up.
    I did the cmd + opt + p + r to get the 3 chimes... no change.
I tried the fsck thing, it didn't do anything.
    HELP.
    Am I a goner?
I saw that some other people had problems, but it seems like everybody's is just slightly different. My display looks totally normal, just won't get past the blue screen. My disk utility said that it didn't need any repairs? Looks like most other people at least saw some errors in there...

I think Carolyn misunderstood the "3 chimes" comment. I think what you meant was that you held down the key combo until you heard the normal startup chime for the third time, not that the iBook gave you the 3 long beeps of a failed POST (power-on self test) which could indeed indicate a RAM problem.
It's more than likely not a RAM issue. These bad updates occasionally happen and the way to handle it is to do what you're doing now; backup what you can and then do an Archive and Install of the OS (although usually a couple of reboots, start in safe boot mode and reinstall the update is usually all that's needed).

  • Won't start up after installing iTunes update

After installing an iTunes update yesterday morning, I shut down my computer while I was gone all day. When I returned home and restarted it, I got the white Apple screen and gray wheel for an unusually long time, 30-45 seconds. Then the screen turned black and the following appeared:
    Sept 13 09:33:05 com.apple.inbindd: Bad System Call
Sept 13 09:33:05 com.apple.inbindd: respawning too quickly! throttling
Sept 13 09:33:05 com.apple.inbindd: 9 more failures without leaving at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
    Sept 13 09:33:05 com.apple.inbindd: will restart in 60 seconds
... some other prompts flashed up on the screen, too quickly to read what they said...this continues for at least 2 minutes before getting this message:
Sept 10 06:33:05 com.apple.inbindd: to many failures in succession
    Sept 10 06:33:05 localhost:/ root#
And then nothing happens. I found a ProBook user on another board who got the same error after installing an iTunes update, and restarting in 'safe mode' seemed to help him. I tried to follow the same instructions but they must be different for the iMac--holding down the shift key while restarting made no difference.
    iMac 17" Intel 1.83 GHz 512MB 160GB SD/AP/BT
Not being able to even get to the desktop--I am at a total loss. Please help!

The Safe Mode startup key combo is the same; Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs, it just isn't working for you.
I suggest starting from the Install DVD that came with your iMac. Once in the Installer you will find tools in the Utilties menu. Using the Disk Utility try repairing the startup volume.

  • Vista won't start after fresh install of LabVIEW & 4G RAM

Since Vista is such a memory glutton I decided to upgrade my AMD64 box to 4 Gig RAM.  Good idea, no?  Turns out not.  Now Vista won't start.  It locks up at the (lack of) progress bar before the log-in screen.  After much hollerin' and hair pullin' I reinstalled Vista and now it sees 3.25 Gig.  I install updates; everything looks good; I install LabVIEW 8.0 and activate it.  At restart WinDoze Vista won't start.  Now I want to scream.  My Linux (Ubuntu Gutsy) partition runs fine and indicates 3.9 Gig RAM.
What is LabVIEW installing that has caused this?  Does anybody have a place to start looking?
Thank You for reading my rantings
    LabVIEW 8.0.1; WinDoze XP
    aut viam inveniam aut faciam

Well, NI doesn't claim LabVIEW 8.0 is Vista compatible.
If you did the full install, you probably also installed Device Drivers and such. If you used the ones released with 8.0, they are definitely not Vista compatible.  Those device drivers will try to load during Vista bootup.  If you did, you will need to do a clean uninstall following this procedure.  Download the latest drivers from NI's website and see if that fixes your problem.

  • IBook G4 won't start up after installing Airport Extreme card

    Hi,
just installed an Airport Extreme Card into girlfriends iBook G4 (10.4.5), which now won't start up. After pressing the start button all I hear is the fan spin (pretty fast actually), but nothing else happens.
When I remove the card the iBook starts up normally.
Any thoughts what could be wrong? Bad card? Bad connection?
    Thanks a lot

Sven, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you certain that you have an AirPort Extreme card?
Are you certain that it is an iBook G4? The iBook G3s require the original AirPort card.
If both of those are OK, then one (or more) of these is true:
    The card isn't installed correctly.
The AirPort Extreme card is defective.
    The iBook's motherboard is defective.

  • IWeb Won't start up after installing 10.6.2!

I downloaded 10.6.2 and installed. Now iWeb won't start up. I have websites to manage.

I didn't have the problem, but you might try deleting user/library/preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist.
That's been known to resolve issues in the past.

  • Please help...Macbook won't start up!

    All,
I need help with my Macbook because it won't turn on. A few nights ago it was shut down, but before completely turning off it stuck on a grey/white screen. The keys were unresponsive and only gave the "bell" sound when pressed. I turned it off by keeping the power button depressed.
Upon trying to switch it on last night, it loads up withthe apple symbol and the pinwheel but then goes to a grey screen reading "You need to restart your machine. Press and hold the power button or press the reset button". I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which did nothing.
I don't know much about Mac's but I am able to start it in safe mode, but what comes up doesn't mean a lot to me. it then stops and stalls whilst still with the black screen and white writing...?
Will I have to start with the disk utility etc?
Please, all advice will be very helpful!
    Thanks

    Hi
The "You need to restart your computer" message indicates a kernel panic, which often points to a hardware fault (often a RAM fault).
Can you reboot the computer from the original installation disk? (Start the computer, insert the disk, force-reboot it again, hold down the C key. If that doesn't work, reboot and hold down the Option key, and then choose the DVD as a startup source. If it loads to the installation screen, try running DIsk Utility from the Utilities menu - run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Let us know if you see any errors (from the Repair Disk routine).
Have you upgraded the RAM at all? If so, try removing the new RAM and leaving (or replacing with) the old RAM.
Is your Macbook still under warranty?
Do you have backups of your files?

  • Help please! Imac won't start and running out of ideas

Help! My imac G4 Flat Panel running tiger won't boot or go beyond the grey screen, here's what happened,
I went away on holiday for ten days and unplugged it, on return it worked fine for the first few goes however after leaving it with alot of photos open for a couple of hours I returned and the screen had gone funny, showed the app window on top but not properly and grey on the bottom two thirds, I could just about move the mouse which was ghosting and it sort of worked but not properly, I switched it off on the power switch and rebooted and it was okay for a few more sessions until getting stuck with the mail app open, I tried to force quit but couldn't and eventually turned it off on the switch, after which it won't boot or go beyond the grey screen every time I switch it on, I've tried all the following with no joy:
    -unplugged all peripherals
-taken out airport card and extra ram I'd fitted myself about six months ago
    - done command, option, p and r on switching on, also command x and command option.
    - tried to boot from the original os x cd which came with it - this gives me a broken mac symbol and multicoloured spinning ball
    - boot from os9 disk which came with it this gives me a flashing question mark sometimes but most times just the grey screen.
    - boot from apple hardware test diagnostic cd which came with it, just says loading and hangs
    - boot from tiger dvd - shows the apple logo then a sign similar to no entry sign and spinning thing underneath.
I've tried rebooting about 100 times now, as it once did a similar thing about eight months ago but eventually booted okay and then I ran check permissions etc. and never had a problem until now.
I've put everything I can think of in in case any of it is important, apologies if there's too much extra info here but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful, am a bit stuck without it, luckily I've backed up most of my stuff but there's some things I haven't. please help! thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem and I wish I had happy news. Sounds like what I am going through. Just spent over 200$ getting the Tiger upgrade installed at a Mac repair place because I wanted it done right, and had the RAM upgraded. After two weeks of bliss I get a gray screen with a spinning gear. The CD drawer wont open, nothing. Take it back to the shop and I find my hard drive is done. This is the SECOND hard drive. My G-4 came with a 40 gig HD, the one that they replaced it with 2 years ago was an 80 gig. I hope thats not whats going on with yours but it sure sounds like it. I beginning to wonder if there isn't a design issue going on here. I am a casual computer user but my son is on it for hours at a time and I'm wondering about heat buildup and the hard drive. Gonna ask that question when I pick it up, good luck with yours.

  • I need help. My N97 won't start anymore...

    Hi,
    I've got a huge problem.
I tried to install a language pack for the dictionary (Spanish - English).
As you probably know, one has to download it from nokia.com. After getting the .sis file, I started the installation. And what happened?? My N97 crashed...
So I thought I should take out the battery inorder to reboot the OS...
But now I can't start my phone anymore. I just see the word NOKIA and thats all.
I searched everywhere inorder to reset my phone, but really nothing....
    I found this: /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=141381&view=by_date_ascending&page=2
Having read this, I assume that I can forget to ask you... since it is not possible to reset it manually.

    Very vague.
unless you give more info and explain what has happened, it is doubtful that anyone can help.
